move may have saved her life. the heart-stopping moments inside one boston home. a dreary, wet, and cold saturday. how the month of october began here. rain falling for much of the day, finally clearing out by the evening. >> the rain a much-needed dousing from mother nature. tomorrow, sarah looking a little bit nicer. >> a little bit drier out there compared to today where some areas just got completely soaked. take a look at these rainfall totals. down across the cape and islands, the southshore, over an inch of rain has fallen. we ed need -- we really needed it. boston picking up .75. about an inch in bedford but lesser amounts the further west

a rough 24 hours. when the skies opened up yesterday, it was as if many were getting behind the wheel for the first time. >> >> it was the first real rainfall we had in months. when it fell yesterday, drivers in brockton acted like it. there were 29 crashes in 24 hours. fernando pintoens withed one of them on north main street as a pickup tried to pass a car illegally. a role. >> swiped him on the left side. he lost control. he hit a minivan straight. >> reporter: the driver who caused that crash outside of the spot lounge around 6:30 p.m. was charged with drunk driving and operating without a license. but the seriousness of the accident was likely compounded by the weather. >> kind of swiped him.

ping-pong -- like two bill yard balls. he served an the pavement being wet contributed to it. >> reporter: here at center and quincy, streets around 11:30 last, officers were responding to a fender-bender caused by the rain, and another collision occurred by two drivers distracted by that accident. on lyman street near erie, debris littered the sidewalk. >> i >> when we went outside, you know, the car was like smoking on the cement wall. >> every time the weather is bad, there's always a lot of accidents. >> reporter: some of yesterday's accidents sent drivers and passengers to the hospital but most of the injuries are minor. back to you. the rainy weather causing problems on the roads across our area. crews had to close the -- street

clearing up this tree that toppled. in wellesley, police were clearing this tree down. crews were called out to take care of the mess shortly before 3:00 this afternoon. the caribbean is bracing for one. one of the most powerful hurricanes. hurricane matthew is expected to head to eastern cuba and haiti. some residents now being told to cities after that earthquake. the national hurricane center said florida could be threatened sometime next week. police don't believe gang violence is the reason for several streets at brockton high school this week. on thursday and friday, there were eight arrests and 16 students suspended. brockton's mayor is addressing parents' concerns about the recent violence. >> we will not allow the misconduct of a handful of students to disrupt the learning

are there to take advantage of all of the opportunities at brockton high school. >> police say most fights were isolated. school officials are not sure what caused the violence but they think it had something to do with a post on social media. a moment rolled over in before moments before a car crashed into her home. our reporter was in dead tam and talked to her husband. >> reporter: it was around 7:30 saturday morning when the couple herd it and felt it. >> getting out of the shower, i felt the whole house shook. >> reporter: the driver of the pickup truck lost control after fire officials say he had a medical emergency. the truck went through a brick wall and clipped the quarter of the home. >> my wife just rolled over to

>> reporter: the homeowner says the wall along the front of his property is the major reason this wasn't more serious. >> if that wall was not there, she would be in serious condition. >> reporter: a boston building inspector says the rest of the house was structurally fine and that the utilities, including the gas line, were on the other side of the homes. the owners will be able to still live there. >> we're going hour by hour. >> reporter: contractors worked to close in the area where the truck hit. the driver of the pickup was the homeowner and his wife are thankful everyone is okay. >> she's a little shooken up right now, as am i. the main thing we're alive. starts of 190 were closed early saturday evening, north of water. a tractor-trailer jackknifed in the southbound lanes. no injuries reported. the road was reopened around 7:00 p.m. still are still investigating why two people

banquet hall saturday morning. the shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. as the crowd was leaving mosley's. they say two vehicles were involved including a red suv that had a shattered passenger window. police found two victims a few blocks away on breed terrace. it's unclear how they ended up there. so far, police have not made any arrests. a melrose man hit by a car saturday morning while walking along linn street. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. the driver stayed and is cooperating. a water main break in needham is causing concern for residents. the break happened near south street and crestview. it caused a sinkhole. a public works truck got stuck in the hole and had to be pulled out by a tow truck. no word yet, though, when that road will finally reopen. a fire at dartmouth college caused hundreds of students to evacuate from their dorms.

and spread quickly throughout the building. crews say there are no reported injuries. the school painer is reporting more than 300 students are expected to be imimpacted by the fire. a new massachusetts in effect for transgender in public places. the law allows transgender people to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their gender firefighters in stoneham marked a major milestone saturday. the fire station turned 100 years old. as part of the event, firefighters paid tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. the 9/11 never forget mobile exhibit was on display for the first time in the state. firefighters also brought back machines that were used to fight fires during the time the station opened.

heart attack, their lost ring lock forgotten until a week ago when a man was metal detecting in a field. >> i got a hit and i dug it up. as soon as i pulled the plug open, there it was. >> reporter: keith brought it home. >> got some of the mud off it. i cleaned it up and i saw the inscription. it said, elaine and barry, 10/20, 1990. >> reporter: he spent hours online searching for the couple searching their names and date until finally discovering their wedding video on elaine's youtube account and sending her a facebook message. >> she contacted me. i said all you have to do is tell me what it says inside and she typed the phrase. and i said yep, it's yours. >> i screamed.

>> reporter: emotional for keith, too. i got the high of finding it in the ground and the high of finding the person and being able to do good and do something nice for somebody. >> keith plans to return the ring to elaine next week. elaine is now engaged to be married again but plans to give her ring to her daughter as a memory of her dad. a group of quincy brothers who fought in world war ii were today. they all qualified for favors from the military but they signed up anyway. the city is dedicating a street corner to them at the intersection of lancaster and fowler street. francis trubiano's son says his father and uncles felt joining the military was the right thing to do. he sees this dedication as a reminder of their sacrifice. >> i hope my kids come visit. i hope they bring their kids to come visit and they bring their kids to come visit.

country pulled together. >> what a wonderful thing. well, nearly 80 members of their extended family were there for dedication. some of them coming from as far as las vegas. >> that's cool. the fox 25 team was out in the rain today walking to raise money for type 1 diabetes research. the walk and 5-k started in the back bay this morning. you can see fox 25's reporter and sara underwood joining the crowd of walkers look at this, mark taking sell fills with fans. thousands came out in the wet weather to help this great cause. >> i've never been so proud of being a part of this as i have this week. >> according to jdr's website, more than 830,000 was raised. i got to emcee the awards
