bp executives meet with the president, the company is reportedly agreed to set aside billions of dollars for victims of the gulf oil disaster. good afternoon, i'm steve sanders. >> i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are tuning in around the country on wgn america. the associate press is reporting bp will set aside $20 billion to pay victims of the mass oil spill in the gulf of mexico. president obama will announce the deal in a rose garden statement and we will bring it to you live as soon as the president begins speaking. bpceo tony hayward and other officials have been meeting with the president at the white house today. that meeting comes after the president told the nation last night that bp would be made to pay for the damage it caused

when an oil rig exploded on april 20 killing 11 workers and unleashing what has become the worse environmental disaster in u.s. history. a climate and energy bill being pushed in the senate will cost u.s. households 40 cents a day. that's less than the fee for a first class postage stamp. it aims to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and green house gases 17% by the year 2020. the gulf oil spill should prompt congress to embrace the clean energy future that lessens the nation's dependance on oil and other fossil fuels. he says the spill is a reminder the days of cheap and easety get oil are numbered. investigators in the riley fox murder case missed several clues that would have led them to her killer years ago. three-year-old reilly was sexually assaulted and drown in a creek in 2004. convicted sex offender scott eby confessed last month. the "chicago tribune" reports that police found eby's shoes in this creek, the same creek

on the same day that riley's body was found. eby's name was written inside the shoes but investigators did not link them to the case. police did not search a nearby bathroom where eby said he sexually assaulted riley fox. in the rod blagojevich corruption trial, prosecutors are hammering away trying to paint the former governor as someone who traded favors for money. wgn's julie unruh has been following this case in the courtroom since day one live at the dirksen federal building with the latest. >> reporter: right now convicted fundraiser tony rezko is really the subject before the court today. the topic they are talking about is money that he allegedly wanted split between the inner circle. joseph is the witness on the stand that is a long time friend of rezko's. he is the one that is telling the jury that rezko is the one who was going to orchestrate a deal tied to trs, teachers retirement system and a finders fee. he wanted that money banked and he wanted that money split between lon monk, chris kelly

and rod blagojevich. now remember the defense was saying in opening statements that this is all about following the money. we will have to see right now who -- if the government will get this witness to say exactly where that money went and exactly who was involved especially to see what rod blagojevich's role was in any of this if at all. let's get on to some of yesterday's business. we were talking about lon monk. he completed the better part of four days on the stand yesterday morning. the ex-governor's one time chief of staff turned lobbyist suffered through hours of grilling. prosecutors got him to say that rod was a willing and knowing participant in schemes to make money off state deals for the inner circle. the defense tried to dirty him up as a witness calling him a liar, portraying him as self- serving opportunist to make a killing financially. through monk the government was able to get more than a dozen secretly recorded fbi tapes entered into evidence. some of the calls involved him. others were conversations between the brothers blagojevich. rob and rod desperately trying to fund raise in 2008 before

a 15-year-old boy riding a bike goes to bond court today. carlos garcia is charged with first-degree murder. witnesses identified him as the one who shot jeremy baguette two weeks ago. baguette was on his bicycle in the 4200 block of west thomas when he was killed. family members say he was shot five times right in front of a grade school. baguette was a freshman at orr academy high school. no word on a motive. a man found shot to death on the southwest side may have been the victim of road rage. this happened late last night in the 4300 block of west 87 street. police found the man unresponsive in the street. he had a gunshot wound to the face. witness claims the shooting was the result of a road rage but police could not confirm that. there are no suspects in custody. earlier this year he donated a kidney to his favorite grocery store cash year but knew public school social worker may lose his job. tomorrow dan coin will honored as humanitarian at a school luncheon. he could lose his job because he doesn't live in chicago.

coin lives in evanston. he was informed he has until next month to meet the school system's residency requirement and pay chicago tacks -- taxes or fired. a lot happened in the short period of time. the same day my mother passed is a way who is 80 and it was very peaceful. i got this notice of losing my job. so i really haven't had much time other than helping my mom and family take care of the funeral businesses. i'm out of town now. we were burying her ashes today. >> coin says the school system knew he lived in evanston when he was hired. he will rent a room in chicago while his family stays in evanston. cook county will not force communities to have red light cameras. yesterday, commissioners approved a measure that allows them to opt out of having the cameras. some communities were against the cameras because they thought the county was bullying them. the county was initially going to install cameras at 30 intersections but only 20 will go up. the county will collect any revenues that come from tickets

by union leaders and aldermen to pay its workers a living wage of at least $11.03. aldermen will have a hard time rejecting wal-mart when they see the jobs. big day is a anniversary for film making in chicago and on the same day the city is announcing another maij proper dux is coming to town. it's all participate of mayor daley's ongoing effort to woo hollywood to chicago. wgn's jay miller is live at city hall with more on the story. really exciting day today. on june 16, 1980, one of the biggest films ever shot in chicago, the blues brothers, debuted. and mayor daley announced another major movie will be shot here beginning next month bringing about 200 jobs to chicago and adding about $20 million to the local economy. transformers 3 will crash into town next month filming from

july 10 to august 19 with chicago serving as its back drop. the movie series has been a successful one, but it's not the only major motion film to be filmed here. 30 years ago the blues brothers kind of put chicago on the map in terms of major film production shot in the windy city. at that time chicago government wasn't exactly open to large scale movie production. but when then mayor jane bird gave the movie a green light, more and more movie studios considered chicago as a premier city to film in. and with illinois offering film companies a 30% tax credit on local expenditures, that only makes the deal sweeter for everyone. >> we were pleased to have them here. and competitive market. other states are doing other cities but we think we have a good work force and we have beauty, 9 skyline. and working relationship. >> we come to the city because we love the city.

american airlines flight 1612 was headed from san francisco to o'hare monday when the first officer got hit with stomach flu. when no off duty pilots were found, the captain asked the flight attendant to step in. she got her commercial license in 1970 and hadn't flown in years. she was able to help the captain watch out for air traffic and listen for instructions. the whole crew was a little nervous. this is nonstandard procedure. >> sure. >> so -- but, no, i wasn't quaking in my boots. i went up an hour and a half before landing and the captain and i spoke at length. the first officer was still in the cockpit. he was sitting behind me. >> the plane landed smoothly at o'hare. she says it was a whole lot more fun than serving meals from the galley. angry denials today after a tabloid report claiming former vice-president al gore's marriage ended because he was having an affair with another

unexpectedly fell to one year low. this is a sign that many builders may wait for the jobs market before starting the projects. speaking of jobs, chicago saw a lot of growth when it came to hiring census workers in the week ending june 5. more than 30,000 temporary census workers were knocking on doors in chicago. fedex is moving markets today. mean time after it delivered some disappointing news. fedex forecast annual profit that trailed analyst estimates. on the brighter side fed ex expects stronger demand for its services and continued profit growth. that's important because fed ex considered an economic bell weather based on the wide range of goods it delivers. and lastly chicago based hyatt planning on selling a chunk of the hotel portfolio including three properties in chicagoland. that according to crane chicago business. crane's reporting the planned sale of ten hotels across the

no question about it. first day of summer. i will tell you it's a might nicer today than it was yesterday. many areas hit by high winds. and even more so the rains yesterday. big rains across the area. a lot of lightning. that ciengd of scoured the atmosphere clean and some the moisture we have a moderate brand of moisture but just look at this. sharp horizon. we don't have haze in the air. little puffy cumulus and no vertical growth to these. these will not develop in the hours beham mt that produced the thunderstorms and downpours yesterday. we have a gusty west to southwest wind blowing into the area propelling the cumulus clouds through the air and that guarantees it will be no lake cooling today. there will be little lake breezes tomorrow. and then we will cycle into some real heat on friday and saturday with temperatures at or above 90 degrees. only the third time this year. look at this doppler plot of

rainfall. the heaviest rains in our metro area fell from chicago's south into our southern suburbs and into northwest indiana. look at some of the rain totals. bourbon a, the leads the pack with 3.15 inches of rain. kankakee had 2.35-inches. even wilmette came in at over two inches of rain. nearly that amount at midway airport. downstate totals will equally dramatic all the way from galesburg to hayworth as you can see there. southeast of springfield 163. what's interesting the month is half hourer -- and produces -- so we had more than twice the a rain and 300 reports of wind damage and/or high winds and a lot of floodling reports. scattered throughout the southeast as those storms blew up yesterday. now our focus turnd to the building dome of warmth which is prodeucing 80-degree

temperatures overall. a wide swath of the continent. we have peak warming still 3 to 4 hours peak temperatures three to four hours away and yet we are at 76 degrees. 78 right now at des moines. and temperatures up by double digits out in the plain states. you can almost see where the dome of warmth is developing. this is going to send a jet stream streaking around the north perimeter of that hot air mass and through the mid west and when that happens you get heat, humidity and a jet stream nearby and you get clusters of thunderstorms to form and the first of those might nbt area of the day after tomorrow. winds are northwest at 12 so no thunderstorms today. the dew point 60 and humidity 58%. water temperature at 70 degrees today. high mold spore counts in the chicago area. and this report in gotlieb hospital and moderate values of grass pollen. and here is a ten day forecast of how the air mass will realign themselves and see the

presence of a lot of orange and red in this map. that's hot and humid air. white lines are where the jet stream blows. and you can see the way it comes across the top of this hot air dome that's taken up residence here and growing humid. clusters of storms to move around the perimeter of that hot, humid air mass. interestingly while we are talking about growing heat in the plains there are frost and freeze advisories again in effect tonight. in the nevada. unseasonably cool air and wind with that outwest. nearest thunderstorms in the warm air out ahead of that cool air mass or out here in kansas, look at the towers on these clouds right now. they are good rain producers. other rains and showers in the glacier national park area out here toward yellow stone and northwestern wyoming and into beautiful mount innocence terrain of idaho as you can see there. have a lot of our wgn america viewers out that way. here you see the humid air mass that's going to swell northward and ride southerly winds into the area and here is how that

works over the next two days. high pressure for the moment has turned rains off and promises calm night which could allow a match or two of fog to form outlying area. just little light ground fog and isobars packed the south winds begin to blow with gust on the plains. these are clusters of thunderstorms that are models developing. first of those to reach the area later friday and friday night there will be more saturday afternoon and evening as well. then some new storms come in early next week. but what is significant about this transition to summery weather is that we will see 90- degree temperatures. we had only two of them officially so far this year. we had four all of last summer officially in chicago. few more than that at midway airport. we are off to i think a more 90s to put in the column right there. mostly sunny, warm today. high temperature 84. the west, southwest winds overcome any lake breezes. so it's warm right up to the

watering already. we will make you some barbecue ribs with cross roads bar and grill. chuck is here and you are going to tell us from beginning to end how to make them super special. what i think about ribs i think it's all in the sauce. you are saying no, no. back up. it's about choosing the right ribs first. >> start with the ribs and what we have to know, we have to understand is that no matter what what sauce on the ribs, if they aren't cooked well they are bad. >> what am i looking for when i buy them at the grocery store. >> here. this is a pound and three quarters slab of ribs. it's baby back ribs. chicago is a baby back rib town. and about a pound and three quarter. that's what we are after. but make sure the membrane, a silver membrane that -- and it's not on here. it's taken off. most of the butchers remove it. but to make sure. >> fattier than others? does that help be more tender. >> it's better that it's

marbled. the fat slows down and it will be five hours of cook time. five hours at 235 degrees. and as the fat flows down through the meat, it helps proteins to break apart and that's tender. that is -- the body, mind recognizes it. so after you picked out the ribs and they come to room temperature, we take the rub and we just simply spread the rub on there, very, very generously. it's very important to get it on there. this begins the process of instigating that break down. the rub marinates to a chicago sauce. this is a chicago style barbecue sauce. >> one you recognize. >> barbecue forria at the cross roads. i have been working on this recipe for about 15 years. >> perfected it at the end of the segment. >> i hope you all like it. i think you will.

after they have been rubbed, the key is to then make sure you stack them very high in the pan. thick wrap in a pan like this with the aluminum file over top of it and seal it up. >> for how long? >> five hours at 235. never let the temperature in the grill go over 250 degrees. this is very important. >> rub on right before you put it on the grill. don't do any prep before that? >> the longer it's on there the more it helps to instigate you don't have to do it for a long time. >> put it on the grill. >> and then this is right to the grill very low temperature. now after they are done, five hours, we then for the first time we begin to brush them with the barbecue sauce. and that's when we splash it on. after we got them splashed on, we then take them on a very, very hot grill. we take them on a very hot grill and before this they were all crown up. now we crown down on the grill. >> i see.

okay. >> this is crown up, this is now crown down. >> with the rub you keep them crown up. for the five hours and then after that after the sauce is on crown down. i'm learning. i'm trying. >> great that you are paying attention. it is -- they are perfect ribs but remember, the ribs are cooked. they have been cooked. this is all for synthetic asks flavor. that's with a we are doing. >> and getting that crunchy in there. >> the carmellization from the sugars. >> that's what we -- >> that's what we are after. crunchy is fine. we take our rib and this one is the one we put on. we want it crown down. what we are looking for is the bubbling that will occur and here is a good example. this bubbling will -- in a hot grill we got this -- look at that. >> and it's falling apart already. it will fall into my hands. >> here is the key. what we are after and it's very important, we are after the meat falling off itself.

it will always fall off the bone. we want the meat to fall off itself. >> okay. >> and here is the next key. get the ribs out of the -- once we take them out of the oven, let them rest for 20 minutes, an hour. let them rest so they begin to reconnect, the protens reconnect. and then we take them to the grill. now-- lot of prep here. >> then i can handle it. i can handle it and it's not falling apart. because these have rested. these are ready for making them look good. >> how long do we make them look good? >> about ten minutes. ten, maybe 15 minutes in quick process once we get that sauce on there. >> once you get the barbecue sauce on. >> we have couple seconds here left. eat up and then tell folks where they can get the res -- recipe. >> plate it up and try out the rib. run down -- >> you don't need the wipes because you have gloves on. i will do it i think bare
