something the controversial pastor proclaimed. urban america is demanding a policy to put americans back to work. >> jesse jackson jr. slamming the president tonight and taking shots at the chief of staff potentially running for mayor. good evening. i'm micah materre. >> and i'm mark suppelsa. our top story seen around the country. now he's throwing punches before a national television audience on cnn tonight. and talking like a man who might be primed to run for the mayor's seat here in chicago. wgn's dan ponce is with the

latest tonight. >> reporter: we're not thinking about the budget so much as those comments from jesse jackson jr. he hasn't said he'd be running for mayor. but it sounds like he's going to. right after president obama gave rahm emanuel a glowing endorsement. >> reporter: okay. my producer saying we're having problem with the report. mayor daley is here talking about the city's budget deficit to the tune of $655 million. so we have not got a chance to get his reaction. some of these scathing remarks from jesse jackson jr. but we'll stick around here and see if he'll have a comment. let's listen to what jesse jackson jr. had to say. >> significant unemployment that is challenging many of our

city. >> reporter: he has criticized mayor daley but today slammed rahm emanuel. >> he now has a record he has the run on. he will have to talk about those communities left behind. >> reporter: jackson and emanuel are mentioned as potential candidates for governor. but neither are in the race. president obama appeared to give e ran yule the blessing to go for office. saying he would be a great governor of chicago. jesse jackson had harsh words for the president as well. >> whether those tax breaks will put american people to work. they are not in the mood for more stimulus dollars. >> reporter: tonight mayor daley says he is focused on chicago's financial hole. he is part of three public hearings to discuss the budget deficit. before the hearing, mayor daley

says he will be confident to balance the city's budget before he leaves office. >> you have to balance your budget. we do that every year. in 1989 we had no balanced budget. so we had to find a balance for two years. >> you're confident it's going to happen. >> you have to be confident. otherwise you're not mayor. >> reporter: mayor daley feeling good tonight he'll be able to get the city back on track financially by the time he finishes office. we are by the public hearing he's holding. this is the first of three to get reactions on what the problems are with the budget. we're going to try to get a reaction from him as to what jesse jackson jr. had to say. we should also mention we did reach out to the white house to get comment from rahm emanuel as to what he thinks about jackson's words. we did not hear back. >> all right. thank you. mayor daley defending jody weis even though weiss says he believes his days on the job

daley leaves office? text yes or no to 97999 or go to wgntv.com. george ryan wants to ask a judge to let him out of prison early. not only are his lawyers challenging his conviction, but they're pleading that ryan's wife is terminally ill. the 76-year-old laura lynn ryan isn't expected to live more than a few years. she was in court attached to an oxygen tank with her son. dan webb says the so-called honest services law curtailed by the supreme court this summer should nullify some of the convictions. >> george ryan subpoena now in prison serving time for something that the united states supreme court said is not a crime. >> we argued he breached his duties but also that he was bought and paid for. i believe the ryan trial meets the higher burdens. >> all sides in the ryan case will be back in court on

november 1. burning upheaval of the florida pastor's plans to burn the muslim holy book. he planned to torch the koran on saturday. today he buckled under intense pressure. now he says he's rethinking that decision. the preacher says he was lied to about a deal to move the ground zero mosque. >> reporter: all of this happening as the world's muslims get ready to mark the end of ramadan. but pastor terry jones managed to anger the community to burn the koran. but jones backed down claiming the imam had decided to relocate the mosque. tonight the imam says that never happened. >> the imam has agreed to move the mosque. we have agreed to cancel our event on saturday. >> reporter: those comments this afternoon from the man behind the story.

pastor terry jones saying one thing, but the imam building the mosque near the world trade center saying another. no commitment from him to move the mosque. but instead agreeing to a meeting. >> to discuss the plan or the project of moving that project to an ideal location that's not controversial. >> i was told exactly that the imam would move the mosque from ground zero. i was told he cannot move it tomorrow. i said that is fine. but it cannot be in ten years. >> reporter: for days, terry jones has been at the center of a heated controversy over his plan to burn the koran, islam's holy book on september 11. all sorts of power players step in asking he not move forward with the event from president obama to defense secretary robert gates to called pastor jones fearing that burning the holy book would create tension

for troops in the middle east. >> such an act will not be tolerated. and they ought to resort to violence. >> reporter: it lookalikes jones will not move forward it plan, it's not clear what could happen after his meeting. today criticizing him for intentionally creating controversy. >> i think that he's just out to sensationalize and to be able to make his way into the mainstream media. the guy only has 50 people in his entire congregation and been in business for decades. that tells you how popular he is and how fringe he is. >> reporter: tonight pastor jones made it clear that he's not canceling the burning of the koran, but suspending it until after the outcome of that meeting saturday. a lot of people stepping into this debate. donald trump said he would buy

murder in suburban oak park. a man is killed in his garage on his way to work. marcel a raymond is there. >> reporter: neighbors and family wondering tonight who would want to kill a man who was a post office employee who loved to do simple things like work in his yard. the police are hoping they are close to finding the answer. >> things like this don't happen here. so it's really scary. >> reporter: it's what all residents say when crime happens in their neighborhood. they never think it will happen where they live. pedro gurrola was murdered this morning before the time he left for work and 10:00 when his wife found anymore their garage. he suffered blunt trauma to his head. >> we have two leads which leads us to believe this was not a random act. >> reporter: he was a letter carrier in buffalo grove.

is underway tonight. the 34-inch crude oil pipeline started leaking after 12:00 today. when it was all said and done, oil was seen pooling on streets and in neighboring ponds. >> first companies on the scene saw oil bubbling up from the ground. very substantial rate. >> reporter: the pipe owned by enbridge pipeline runs to indiana. the oil caused about a dozen businesses in the romeoville industrial park to be evacuated. >> it smelled like gas and there were helicopters. >> reporter: the pipe was shut off just before 1:00 and crews began cleaning up the mess using vacuum trucks and booms. >> the cause of the leak is not yet known. you can see it behind us. we're focused on the cleanup. the leak has been contained. we'll be working throughout the night on the clean up.

>> reporter: enbridge says the public is not in danger however the smell of oil lingers tonight. >> it stinks. it has that odor if the you leave the gas on. >> reporter: again, that leak has been contained. howevers, it's unclear how long it will take to clean up completely. we should mention this is the second enbridge pipeline spill in the midwest this summer. the first one happening back in late july where roughly 800,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the kalamazoo river. this is nothing of that magnitude. but certainly a concern for residents tonight. back to you. >> thank you. federal judge says the u.s. military's don't ask, don't tell policy is unconstitutional tonight. it happened about an hour ago. the judge made that ruling granting an injunction to halt the ban on gay soldiers. it was the biggest legal test

of that law in recent years. it came from promises by president barack obama that he will work to repeal that policy. been a head spinning week in illinois politics with daley's decision not to rerun. >> but cartoonist scott stantis is reminding you of other races. >> reporter: the fall campaign season is coming. according to the polls, most of you are really, really despondent. let's look at the big races. the campaign to fill president obama's seat is a dead heat. you have mark kirk who may or may not have been shot at in iraq. and may have also overstated his experience volunteering in an inner city school when he found out one of the students was packing heat. he volunteered at a preschool. on the democratic side we have

alexi giannoulias. he touted his vast banking experience at his family-owned broadway bank. since then the bank has been closed by the feds. one rumor was that broadway bank regularly gave loans to a known gangster. the race for governor, now that has to be with where the quality candidates are; right? pat quinn became governor after blagojevich became impeached. he a reputation of being a reformer. which he has placed a in blind trust. there's a reason i draw him as a blob of jell-o. his opponent is bill brady. as a state senator, he imposed legislation that did not have to cover pap smears and mammograms. to euthanize as many animals as they want. making him the breast cancer and killing puppies candidate. finally a wgn poll shows that

researchers looked at mri results looking at how the brain reacts. they hope it can help treat developmental discorders. doctors can count the effects of smoking on the men. it diminishes sperm count. on quality saying it does alter fertility potential. it leads to a drop in protein crucial for sperm development and damages dna. the fruitless quest for healthy eating. many say they try. but the truth is the number of people regularly enjoying fruits and vegetables are going down. only 1/3 of americans eat fruit or drink fruit juice each day. 26% eat their veggies. the numbers are based on a survey of hundreds of thousands of americans. not one state met federal

here. >> it's quite interesting, the greenld block is back and that'sthatwarm dome of air up there that forces cool air down. we're also getting cool weather indices showing canada filling up with warm air. there's a probability of another 80. a 45% probability of a 90- degree temperature from this point forward. that's based on 82 years of records. these are the cumulus clouds. micah said what were those clouds today? the blue sky later reappeared. but beneath those we had the coolest high temperature since we've had back in early june. look what happened in the north woods. 31 last night in glid den, wisconsin. and we were as cool as 41 in

burlington, wisconsin. sugar grove at 45. pretty amazing how cool it was across the area. do we need a microphone here. all right. hang on to this. look at our temperature tonight at o'hare. already down to 58 degrees. it's 62 at midway. it's a cool night we've got coming up here with mixed clouds. and temperatures today that made it into the low 70s. if you were away from the lake. but only 67 at o'hare field. so it was cool. that's the view from kankakee. and here's what you would have seen down in arkansas today. where hermine's remnants were sending showers and thunderstorms through the air. same through here in southern missouri. there were big rains. like 4.5 inches of rain in arkansas. that's the rain that's passing to the south of us tonight. you can see it right there. and there are other rains passing to the north.

so we're sitting here conveniently in between and unlikely to see any rain in our area for a little while. that's the doppler plot of rainfall today and here's the radar that shows the 40,000 plus foot cloud tops in the southern midwest that is going to pass to the south of us. but the moisture pool supporting these will be coming forward and mixing with the system that could bring us our next rain but not until late tomorrow night and on saturday. if you have any plans tomorrow, looks like it's great. the sox game looks fine tomorrow night. and beyond those showers, on saturday the bears game will be nice. kind of a gusty southwest wind on sunday with no rain expected until maybe a shower coming in sunday night. those are the storms in western sections of south dakota. these are the storms that will be producing some showers in our area. and they prompted tornado and thunderstorm watches. as you can see up here to the north. see that purple area out in washington and northern california? that's a frost and freeze

advisory. a sign that we're not alone with our cool weather. look at the models of rainfall in the next two and a half days. still, hermine's moisture has not been spent yet. big rains in the southern midwest. and this weather system coming eastward will pull some of the moisture north and turn it into showers here. you can see where the cool air was here kind of in a low that sent the temperatures sagging southward. moderately cool air dominated all the way north to the arctic circle. there are are temperatures tonight. in montana they're talking about snow above the 7000-foot level. while it's 50 at marquette. another chilly night on the way with dew points low. so we're slowly but surely pushing that warm air out of here. don't be surprised to see it

receiving master gardener certificates today at a harvest fest. this was taking place behind 12- foot fences at the cook county jail. they'll celebrating a bountiful year for the prison program. imprisonment means punishment for many but also opportunity. >> i watch it grow. it's the same thing as i watch this grow, i watch myself also grow. >> reporter: tibias johnson is serving for battery. four hours a day working in the gardens under a blazing sun changes a man. >> i started to think more about my consequences about whatnot to do next time. and not get mad so easy. >> reporter: johnson did so well, he'll leave the jail next month with a master gardener's certificate from the extension program. giving him a better chance of finding work. >> they'll tell you it's the first time they've ever started

out to do something and completed it. for them, there's this level of achievement that we take for granted that they've never had before that is neat to see. >> reporter: garden workers are nonviolent, non-gang affiliated prisoners. they benefit by learning new skills. plus they get fresh air, exercise, and this perk. prison food they want to eat. >> we've got ground and the ability to cultivate. so i said let's get it started. >> reporter: that was 17 years ago. today it includes a green house which includes them to grow crops year round and train more men. >> a nice chance to get out and do something. >> reporter: raymond secara is here for selling cocaine. he garden program is his second chance. >> i like getting my hands

except for some little strands of high clouds. late in the day they start filling in is there. and the band of showers maybe a thunderstorm may come in late tomorrow night and for a time on saturday. then that sprawling high centered in kansas comes in amid a gusty westerly wind and warmer temperatures on sunday. which could go into the upper 70s around the area. so there's our warm weather on saturday. cooled only by the rain. and even warmer sunday because the sun will be back out. and some cool air drops in. and that's part of that blocking pattern that we've seen so often in recent years in our cool seasons up in the north atlantic and all. seems to be a factor yet in the next couple of weeks. that'll keep cool air masses coming with some regularity. however, we have about eight 80s to go. there are about eight 80s we found by studying the records from this point forward.
