your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. caption colorado, l.l.c. strong winds and cold weather made for a difficult and potentially dangerous day on the lake. rescuers were forced to grab some stranded workers with a helicopter along the north shore. good evening, everyone. i'm jackie bange. >> i'm dan ponce in for robert jordan. amy rutledge reports. >> reporter: a coast guard rescued three crewmembers on board two construction barges and a tugboat which ran aground near glencoe. the craft got stuck there last night but with no imminent danger to the crew, rescuers waited until daylight to pull them one by one back to safety. getting the boats out of the area will likely take a bit longer. >> we have probably nine to twelve-foot swells, and it's a pretty rough day on the lake.

the winds are blowing pretty strong. the construction company is going to eventually, when the lame calms down, have the barges off-loaded and removed. >> reporter: in chicago at belmont harbor, police and paramedics responded after a sailboat capsized with two people on board. fire officials say staff from the local yacht club were able to rescue the 23 and 14-year- olds using inflatable rafts. both were treated and released with minor injuries. the 23-year-old was cited for careless operation of a boat. throughout the day, strong waves pounded the shorelines and both bobbed in their slips. despite the small craft advisory issued by the national weather service, some still headed down to the water. jeff and his friends planned to put their boat away for the year but instead found themselves hiding from the elements around marveling at anyone thinking about heading out. >> we tied up a couple places on the other side of the boat here to make sure that it's all right. there is a small craft advisory warning city those who do would be crazy. especially in this condition. >> reporter: that warning

remains in effect until sunday night. amy rutledge, wgn news. >> a man who was charged with murdering his wife was transferred from cook count jail to kankakee jail today. allan kustok was charged with first-degree murder accused of fatally shooting his wife anita in their orland park home on wednesday. authorities say 59-year-old kustok was moved because he worked at the jail between 2004 and 2007. knowing the staff and facility is a conflict of interest. kustok is being held on a $2 million bond. rahm emanuel comes back to chicago tomorrow and he is already taking heat from in any in city hall especially from those he might be running against. he hasn't made it official but today he took one step closer to entering the race for mayor. his new website went up this afternoon. chicagoforrahm.com. a full biotell it like it is blog and glowing praise from barack obama. after the president said good-

bye to his now former chief of staff, he said emanuel would make an excellent mayor of chicago. but some in city hall say the president should stay out of the city's race. >> of course he is going to say nice things about his chief of staff because saying bad things would admit he made mistakes. the obama has made mistakes. we still support the president and his policies but rahm emanuel coming back to chicago as if he is the heir apparent is just wrong. >> reporter: the 22nd ward alderman says many of his latino constituents see iman '0as an obstacle to immigration reford. another added he was not impressed by the president of's unofficial endorsement. >> it didn't sit well with me especially i think the president has a lot of other things he could be doing creating jobs for people especially here in chicago. that to me would have been more important. but also, the people of chicago, they need to weigh in and they need to chime in, in terms of who their next mayor is going to be.

>> reporter: second ward alderman is collecting petitions this weekend. if elected he says his leadership style would be different. >> there will be two types of different candidates those who support the same policies from the top down or as my campaign will be from the bottom up listening to what the people have to offer. and i think the top down is out of touch with reality. >> reporter: former alderman a professor dick simpson says the anybody but rahm movement at city hall isn't surprising after more than two decades of mayor daley. >> the aldermen are not looking to find a new boss. they just got rid of mayor daley and they are not looking for boss emanuel and crunch down from on top and not come up through the ranks not be part of the chicago scene. >> reporter: aldermen we spoke with today say rahm emanuel needs to take his listening tour very seriously so he can become more familiar with local issues. again, his website went live this afternoon. on the site it stays tomorrow there will be an important

video announcement were rahm. well, mayor daley attended a groundbreaking for a new high school in the ashburn community today and he was asked, what advice might he have for candidate rahm emanuel? >> i don't give people advice. you know? to me, no one gave me advice when i ran. the only thing you is listen to people and you'll find out what people want and people want good schools, they want good schools. >> the mayor went on to tell reporters the public knows more than the press gives them credit for. he said people understand issues and they understand the candidates. former chicago public schools board president and close friend of mayor daley gary chico continued his campaigning today. >> all about qualification and what you've done. when i can go down these street and talk about police stations, libraries, the broadway armory, margate park improvements, people say we like that. that is what makes you stand out. >> chico and his wife have been

businessing collecting signatures from voters, 12,500 needed by november 22 to secure a spot on the ballot. chico says he has at least 500 volunteers helping him. on the campaign trade republican candidate for illinois senate mark kirk reminds voters a month from today when they go to the polls they will have to vote twice for u.s. senator. the second vote will fill the unexpired term from november to january of the seat once held by president obama. kirk says it's important voters realize this saying a number of fiscal issues will be voted on after the elections that will affect voters' pocketbooks. >> so your vote, especially your second vote, is very important. you get two votes. this is before the line for governor. because you're sending a junior senator to the senate right away to vote in the lame duck session of congress. >> senator roland burris was

appointed by former governor rod blagojevich after mr. obama became president. a federal court judge ruled he could only be senator until november 2 and that a special election must be held to fill the seat for two months. alexi giannoulias says he is pleased with the latest wgn tv tribune poll that shows him with a slight lead over kirk. >> while that's encouraging, i think the reason we are doing well is we continue to talk about jobs and helping small businesses, moving this country forward, announcing an urban agenda, focusing on issues, and you know the tea party candidate habit taken a lot of steam yet and when it hans, you are going to see to see that vote splint. >> the poll out yesterday shows.

black and white gala to honor bernie mac. >> what you want from me, man? you want me to get on the table and dance? >> reporter: he died two years ago from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease that attacks immune system. there is no cure. and at the time, there was little known about the disease. >> when he was diagnosed we didn't even know what it was. and the doctors didn't even really know what it was because i remember her telling him that they didn't know how to treat it. they didn't really know much about it. but really said if it doesn't interfere with your life, just live and that's pretty much what he did. >> here i am! yeah! >> reporter: for 24 years, mac battled the disease while making his way to the top of his field. he was raised in chicago and tonight, hundreds gathered to honor him at the peninsula hotel and race money for sarcoidosis research. >> he would be so thankful to see all the people who came out

to support his endeavor. >> reporter: always the show man, his family says mac would have loved this party. >> anybody who knows my dad knows how narcissistic he could be, so for this to be as grand an event in his honor, he is smiling. he is happy. >> reporter: bernie mac's wife and daughter hope to raise $100,000 tonight and continue to look for a cure. reporting from the magnificent mile, marcella raymond, wgn news. taxpayers who have not paid their state tax have until november 8 to pay up. >> the opportunity that they have to settle their accounts without penalty, without interest, no questions asked, they have a chance to pay what they owe and on they go. >> under the new tax amnesty, taxpayers have until november 8 to pay their taxes or the fine doubles. now, normally the fine for not paying taxes ranges from 10 to 40% of the amount owed. governor quinn says he is doing this to encourage people to pay

off any outstanding debt, at least 250,000 people owe taxes to the state. if those people pay up, the state could bring in up to $250 million. a window rattling return for two marines home again in clarendon hills from tours in afghanistan. marine corporals are both westmont high graduates. they got together at camp pendleton where they were assigned to the same platoon. patrick was one of the fire team leaders in southern afghanistan. the riders were invited to form a welcome home escort after they landed at midway. a tough tour of duty but happy welcome home and semper fi. family members passed out flyers about an unsolved murder case. one year ago, 21-year-old jose was shot in the humboldt park neighborhood. police say he was dropped off at his how the when shots were

thousands of people turned out on the lincoln mall in the nation's capital today pledging to help democrats keep power in next month's elections. the coalition of progressives and civil rights groups organized the event called the one nation working together rally. blaming republicans for shipping jobs overseas and curtailing freedom. >> but we have to stand behind our leaders on the progressive agenda that is for the people and not always the corporations. >> we marched too long for the vote, bled too much and died too young. don't give up now. >> the national mood suggests gains in congress for republicans next month and the event today was held to energize democrats to get out the vote and retain majorities in both the house and the senate. the importance of knowing

your body, a 19-year-old purdue student knew a lump on her breast was a red flag but for months, doctors told her it was nothing to worry about. >> as angela explains, her persistence saved her. >> reporter: at 22-year-old, adrian has gone through more than most of us in a lifetime. >> i was having to do something that, you know, most 30, 40, 50-year-old women have to go through, that was really difficult. >> at 19, she felt a lump on her breast. two ultrasounds and two doctors later the purdue student was sent on her way and told not to worry because lumps are common in young women. they believed it was probably benign. after all, they said, she was only 19 and had no family history of breast cancer. >> i just kept thinking, you know, there is something wrong, there's something wrong with me. >> reporter: but adrian pushed for a biopsy. that's when doctors discovered her lump was cancer. a doctor at community care

removed the tumor so the healing could begin. >> it's through adrian's persistence and her recognition of what was normal and abnormal in her own exam that allowed her to be diagnosed early and she was diagnosed with a stage 1 breast cancer which again in a young woman is pretty unusual. >> my persistence saved might have life because it was only stage 1 cancer. months i might have had stage 4 breast cancer and might not be here today. >> reporter: but adrian is here today after four rounds of chemo, 33 rounds of radiation, and a support of family, friends and her fiance who she recently married. >> it was just nice to know that someone really cared about me and wanted to spend their life with me. >> reporter: she is under the watchful eye of dedoctors. she celebrating and not pointing fingers. >> definitely don't blame the doctors for their diagnosis. but i think that maybe now they should realize that it can happen to younger women and to

pay more attention to that. >> reporter: she is using her story to educate young women all across the country. >> breast cancer doesn't discriminate, it doesn't matter your age, race or gender. you can get breast cancer anytime. >> adrian will graduate from purdue in december. she says her story is an example of how sometimes you have to be your own strongest advocate when it comes to healthcare. it feels more like the end of october rather than the beginning. >> next, jim ramsey says the chilly temperatures won't be around all that long. hopefully. @ ó

all the soccer moms and dads and the flag football moms and dads were just shivering. it was cold out there. >> it was. we in fact probably should have calculated a wind chill today but we didn't do it. we did stay in the 50s all day today. in fact, even colder down by chicago's lakefront and even some lake-effect showers have been plaguing parts of the area. we'll look at the radar in just a moment. time lapse cameras, what a gray dismal day downtown today. and looking north from the john hancock center you can see those winds just shooting down the lake. that's a strong north wind. it's cold aloft as well and the combination of that cold front willed and the temperatures aloft we produced the lake- effect rain. now, how cold was it? our temperature map shows a high of 57 degrees today. but that's actually a little

farther inland. that's the o'hare temperature. a little cooler down by chicago's lakefront. still plenty of warm air south. we may get a piece of that toward next weekend. but in the short term, tomorrow it looks like we'll see more temperatures in the 50s. in fact, there's even a chance of seeing some frost tomorrow night. talk more about that later. look at these temperatures across the area. the coolest numbers are out in the western suburbs and dew point temperatures a good indication of how cold it will get tonight shows some 30s across the area. yeah, probably upper 30s to low 40s for overnight lows. wind speeds 5 to 15 but 10 to 15 would be a better call overnight. now, freeze warnings are in effect from northeastern minnesota down through parts of northwest wisconsin, with frost advisories all the way to missouri. now, move that air mass over 24 hours and yeah, we could see some frost tomorrow night. this is the cold air but it's only going to be around a short time. it's actually going to weaken and lift out to the northeast.

this orange-ish red area, that's warm air and by next saturday, we might even put an 80 on the current temperatures. it's going to be fairly warm indeed. we'll talk about a that a little later in our seven-day forecast. but a fairly good-looking week according to that map. radar, these are the lake- effect showers, they will continue off and on tonight. and perhaps during the day tomorrow. here's our forecast. for tonight, in the area, expect the clouds to hang around by the lakeshore. showers possible but clear skies inland. low temperature 37 to 42 with a northerly wind. tomorrow, cloudy by the lake. sunshine inland once again with a high temperature a little nippy. 53 to 57 with a northeast wind diminishing by tomorrow night, partly cloudy, possible frost. more on that as we take a closer look tomorrow. for monday we start the workweek a little below normal but not too bad, 61 to 65 degrees, mostly sunny skies across the area.

it's an upscale restaurant specializing in some pretty classic dishes brought to you by a couple of guys best known for pioneering the gastro pub movement in chicago. henri is an unlikely match but one that works. reporter: this is the dark energetic and very noisy place. and this is henri's, light, refined and very quiet. and this is chef dirk flanagan who can probably oversee both places including the newly opened henri. we asked flanagan to compare the two. >> the gauge is a big loud fast

fun restaurant. we wanted to do something and offer all the highlights that we do at gauge on a smaller scale and get a little bit more refined, what we were going after was in this area, there is nothing like it. >> reporter: henri named for famed an architect embraces history in a big way covering its menu with throw-back dishes such as steak tartare and served with a quail egg. it's smoked giving it unexpected depth of flavor. this lobster wellington arrives as three pastry pots stuffed with lobster and foie gras with a duck sauce that adds more richness. entrees including the sensational roasted rabbit and peace and carrots and boo yeah base an overflowing bowl of lobster, clam meat and more

with a full flavored shellfish stock broth pouredded at the table. this might be the best bull yeah base in the city. with east facing windows, it's an attractive lunch destination. great lunch sandwiches. this iceberg dome looks like an old-fashioned wedge salad but the two lettuce leaves are hiding a beautifully composed heirloom tomato salad. enjoy it while the season lasts. desserts are sweet and straightforward and very pretty. one is raspberries and pastry cream layered between flaky crisp and the dark chocolate tart had shavings as a bonus. the raspberry sorbet looks ordinary but the flavor is so intense, it's one of the best desserts on the menu. beautiful room, beautiful food, great service and a location

in grant park, a run and walk to benefit chicago's aids foundation and more than 70 local aids groups. an estimated 7,000 people turned out including a large contingent of corporate teams. there you go. wgn's own dean richards and val warner hosting. also in the mix were local high school and college teams an there is plenty of entertainment to go along with the event. since 2001 the aids run/walk chicago has netted more than $3 million to battle the disease. 25 wishes in 25 hours. that's the kickoff for the 25- year anniversary of the make-a- wish foundation. wish children across illinois are receiving a special sendoff. a wish party during the 25 hour period. it's the most wishes ever grand by the foundation in a state in one day. now, two of the first wish

resitient, 13-year-old giovanni who lives in mendota with must skew muscular dystrophy and another child got two special wishes. michael materre is emceeing a 10th annual living legends passing the torch gala. the $125 a plate event also celebrates the black united fund's 25th anniversary of the service to the state's black community. the passing of the torch program is designed to encourage continuity from one generation to another. a chilly start to the weekend. >> but things will warm up later in the week. hopefully, right? jim ramsey has more from the weather center. >> tomorrow we are probably going to be a degree or two colder than today. but beyond that there are improvements. right now, i'm going to show you the radar. that lake-effect rain is still

coming down and those strong north-northeast winds are pushing the rains down into some of chicago's south suburbs and over in northern indiana. that may continue off and on during tonight and you can expect perhaps a little more of that stuff tomorrow, as well. it looks like that probably we'll see, oh, maybe a shower or two coming in maybe about this time next week. but in all likelihood, it looks like that -- i have actually got a computer problem here in case those of you in the booth are wondering what i'm doing for the more than. here's the seven-day forecast. temperatures in the 60s on monday, mid-70s wednesday. and check that out. saturday a high of 81 degrees. the winds turn around to the south and southwest. we have mostly cloudy skies with maybe a chance of a shower or thunderstorm late saturday. but if we can get by sunday it's not a bad stretch of days. it looks like a period of monday through friday will be comfortable. a lot of sunshine. but it's going to be cold again as we say tomorrow.
