[ female announcer ] do you know scott? scott naturals and free smart flush are green done right. gunman is still at large one day after a deadly two state shooting spree. today police investigate every lead trying to track down a killer. good afternoon, i'm steve sanders. >> i'm allison payne. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america. wgn's julian crews is live in hammond, indiana, where one of the victims lives. good afternoon. the search goes on for the gunman. a heavy police presence on both sides of the state line as the manhunt continues here in hammond. friends, neighbors and loved ones mourn the loss of rolando alonzo if you need something he didn't think twice to do it for

you. i remember one time i need a ride for my husband and i. he let us use his truck. >> reporter: the 45-year-old alonzo was beloved by neighbors and family alike. victim's brother roberto alonzo not yet able to talk on camera. his family distraught over their loss and the bizarre circumstances of yesterday's shooting making it all the more difficult to understand. police say a man alonzo didn't know, a total stranger. drove up to him and two coworkers outside a beecher, illinois, briefly asking them about construction materials before inexplkably opening fire. alonzo was pronounced dead on the scene and another man critically injured. a third man escaped into a cornfield. the rampage continued. the gunman drove across the state line outside lowell ix indiana. he engaged a farmer in a disjointed conversation about honey bees before pumping three

bullets into keith dawl after stealing his wallet the gunman drove away. last seen heading in the direction of hammond. no one can say for sure where he is right now. the fact that the gunman remains at large. he has sent a wave of fear through much of the region and especially hammond reses didn'ts are worried. >> i worry about my family and people around me. >> a lot of kids come outside and play they don't know about it yet and parents, some parents go to work. >> now the gunman fortunately witnesses were able to give a pretty good description of him. he is a heavy set white man in his 40s, about 5'8". he was seen wearing a green wind breaker and light colored jeans. his appearance is said to be disheveled. it's believed he is driving a 1990s model chevy cheyenne pick up truck, perhaps grey in color or light blue. so to recap, police continue to search for this gunman.

no news, no tips. police looking for a break in this case at this point in time he remains at large. in hammond, indiana, julian crews, wgn news. chicago police are investigating two shootings that happened about a block a-- apart this morning on the west side. in the first, two people were shot near polk and pulaski about 8:30 this morning. one of the victims a man in his 50s died. other is hospitalized. just a few minutes later a second shooting happened in the 4800 block of lexington. one person was taken to the hospital in critical condition. police are trying to figure out whether those shoot rgz related. no arrested were made. authorities are trying to identify a man struck and killed this morning by a cta train. man was hit by the train on the pink line at polk station here. power on the line was shut down in both directions. that caused major delays for riders. service is now back to normal on the pink line. visitation services will be held this afternoon for an orland park teacher police say

was killed by her husband. visitation will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at rose moore funeral home in lansing. tomorrow a memorial mass will be set at 12:30 at our lady of knock church in calumet city. police say anita was shot by her husband last week. allen told police he woke up in the middle of the night to find his wife dead and a gun in her hand. he is now charged with murder and motive has not been released. they are the parents of a former northwestern quarterback and a comcast sports reporter. they are supporting their father saying he could not have shot their mother. chicago school ceo ron huberman is denying he will step down during the middle of the school year. wgn's nancy loo live now at city hall with the latest on this. hi, steve. ron huberman is the talk of city hall today. in fact, mayor daley is answering questions right now about his school ceo. mean time, huberman is

stressing he is not going anywhere any time soon. >> nothing imminent. there are things that need to happen with the district that i fully intend to see. i will be leaving this morning and getting on plane to go to new york because we are restructuring our bond. we are restructuring our bond for next year's budget in order to reduce the deficit. >> school ceo denied a report he has lined up a job in the private sector and made clear he won't step down until it's okay with mayor daley. and key programs and a smooth transition are ironed out which may not happen before the end of the school year. despite such vow, some are calling huberman's publicized intentions counterproductive. is that distraction not only to us but to the teachers, and everyone. so let's get it over with. find out what he is doing. he said what he was doing and will talk to him. now since the mayor's retirement announcement. many here have expected top members of the daley

to end the war in afghanistan. the "washington post" says representatives for the president and insurgence are in secret talks. until now taliban leader has refused to negotiate with the afghan government until all foreign troops withdraw. but the post says the two sides are working on an agreement that would include participation of some taliban members in government and withdrawal of u.s. and nato troops. taliban in pakistan is claiming responsibility for another attack this morning on nato oil tankers. there you see 20 trucks were blown up and one person was killed. the convoy was one of many that supplied fuel to allied forces in afghanistan. the taliban claims these attacks are in revenge for drone strikes against targets in pakistan. experts say the taliban may also be using these attacks as leverage in their negotiations with afghan leaders. president obama will present the medal of honor today to the parents of a soldier who gave his life to

save others. tribute to staff sergeant robert miller is held in his hometown of wheaton and that's where wgn's robert jordan joins us live. >> the st. michaels parish where he attended school. miller died two years ago in afghanistan. sacrificing his life for those of his teammates and 15 afghan soldiers. >> our sergeant miller is a valiant, courageous hero and truest and most classic sense. >> hometown war heros are important because they give meaning to why we fight. the bravery and valor shown by those willing to die for a cause set a lofty example for others to follow. staff sergeant robert miller was honored at his hold elementary school, st. michaels parish in wheaton.

students attended a mass in his honor to celebrate the life of this fallen hero who is now a role model for others to follow. >> the accounts of his january 2008 day in afghanistan gives us all pause to reflect on what honor and courage and dedication that our sergeant demonstrated. not only for his band of brothers, but for his country. >> receiving the congressional medal of honor, must involve mertoryious conduct involving great personal bravery or self- sacrifice so con spkous as to clearly distinguish the individual above his or her comrade and involve risk of life. >> in the 250 year history of the medal of honor, less than 3500 americans have been so honored. it shows it's a testament to the heroism that robert miller displayed on the battlefield. >> outside the church a special area was designated in honor of

sergeant miller where students can gather to remember his bravery. >> now as we have gathered here at this plaza in honor of sergeant robert miller, a plaque will be added on the post indicating his reception of medal on this date by president obama. ♪[ music ] sergeant miller is survived by his parents who are in washington, d.c., today for the medal ceremony along with three brothers and four sisters.

from wheaton, robert jobden, wgn news. should people be allowed to hold protests at military funerals? that's the question that the u.s. supreme court will hear arguments today. pits albert snyder against the baptist church in kansas. snyder's son was killed in iraq. 59 his funeral church members demonstrated holding signs that said thank god for dead soldiers and god hates usa. lower court ruled that snyder has right to mourn privately. as you can see here the church members are outside the supreme court today protesting holding up those signs. coming up next, we are talking to former illinois -- >> will they need new business card? talk to joe biden and hillary clinton could be swapping jobs. and you seen them at the grocery store but what do you do with those baby pumpkins? putting them to use in lunch break.

i'm bloomberg's angie lau live at the cme group in chicago. one thing that could fire up the economy but the jobs engine is sputtering. according to adp, private sector employment dropped by 39,000 from august to september. economies had expected companies to add jobs and there are signs that the labor market is still being restrained. illinois' kraft foods continues to hire. kraft ceo told cnbc today that the company is hiring and continues to hire even in the current environment. especially in developing markets. meanwhile motorola is another mover and shaker on wall street today. this is after the co-ceo say it may spin off its mobile phone bids early in the first quarter of next year and expect more

versions of the popular droid smartphone coming to motorola. it's just one. six new smartphones that consumers can choose from as it hopes to capitalize on surging demand for devices based on google's android software. and lastly, what's an internet search engine company doing by buying low income rental housing? in bloomberg exclusive that's what google, krogers and waste management are investing in. returns on investments in low income rental housing have doubled to almost ten percent since 2006. that's why these fortune 100 companies are buying. investors are making money primarily by paying less than a dollar for a dollar's worth of tax credit. on wall street, some investment going on but stocks right now fluctuating all day today and it looks like the s&p 500 index is struggling to add to yesterday's rally after that report showed an unexpected

decrease in private payroll. live at the cme group in chicago, angie lau, bloomberg news. now back to you. as rahm emanuel begins preparing for a run for mayor, his lawyers are beginning the job of convincing the city of chicago that he is eligible to run. rahm emanuel is required to be a legal chicago resident for the 12 months prior to february's election. he is the landlord of a home on the north side but extended the renter's lease just days before mayor daley announced his impending retirement and renter won't move out. emanuel has moved into a leased condo on the edge of westten and -- westtown and river west. he is one of the few people that announced he will not run for mayor. former illinois senate president e-mail jones. >> thank you so much for being our guest. >> good to be with you. we had this crowded field. everybody stepped up to say they would like to run. but i know you enjoying retirement too much to take on

this challenge. personalities aside, president jones, what should chicagoans be looking for in the candidate for mayor. >> look for one that will represent the expectations for the city of chicago. many candidates running but to be successful as mayor you need support across the entire city. you have the african americans, hispanic, gay and lesbian community. and everyone must come together. whoever can represent all these entities will be the person that will be best able to serve the city of chicago. >> and that's a pretty tall order for a candidate. >> or if you have not worked with all sections of this city, all the various groups, that person is not going to be successful. >> let's mention some of the candidates in this race. we talked about rahm emanuel. can we expect a legal challenge to his candidacy? >> more than likely there would be. i believe that if he was registered all they need to do

is change his voter rej straig. >> does he appeal to those groups. >> i don't know that much about him so i couldn't tell you that. >> some of the other candidates? carol moseley braun? reverend meeks, del valle and i goters are. >> i have a lot of friends in the illinois senate. miguel del valle is a good person. he and i worked together over the years. i strongly supported him for city clerk. >> is it time for hispanic mayor of chicago? >> not a question if you are hispanic, black, white, jewish, italian, that's not be the issue because you can't win on being a hispanic candidate running for mayor. or being a black candidate or jewish candidate. >> but this is chicago. you can't ignore ethnic and racial lines when people go to the polls. >> you can't ignore -- in order

to be successful and winning the election you have to need support from the other groups. therefore you cannot run just as a black candidate or white candidate or hispanic candidate. you run to represent all the people of this city of chicago. >> seems like one of the biggest challenges facing the city right now is how to get a handle on all of this violence, particularly against children. last week we had a woman -- 68- year-old woman shoot a child who allegedly thrown bricks at her. seems to be spiraling out of control. >> spiraling out of control. one of the things especially for our young people, we lost so many young people. i believe a new approach has to be taken. you can put more police on the street but that's not going to stop the shooting. what needed is for the police to understand the community that's impacted. i would call together a focus group. bring-- citizens of the city of chicago in those areas that are impacted and find out from them

what the problem is. from there when the mayor -- a code of silence in the community because the police department as well. those two must get together and break down that code of silence so we can gel with the sear -- deal with the serious problem. one quick question, your endorsement would carry -- endorsements don't mean much. yours would. >> one of the things you don't buy any wine before its time. you have to wait for all of the horses are on the track. right now we don't know who those horses are going to be. i'm not doing any endorsing. i will be involved. i'm more concerned about re- electing governor pat quinn. i will be quite involved and have been in that race. that's more important. that's coming up in a month. you are doing political consulting. will you work with any candidate in particular? >> no. >> always a pleasure.

maybe spending a few more nights in jail. carla ogless vee not -- oglesby not able to come up with enough money for bail. she is accused of fumling county contracts to herself. the family could not raise 10% of $2,950,000 needed for her release. another bond hearing will be held tomorrow. a small town in indiana still does not have police services. after officials voted down a way to pay for them. on friday, the lake county sheriff's department said it would not respond to nonemergencies in the town of winfield, indiana. the sheriff is seeking a payment of $100,000. it was due friday and wants winfield to approve a town marshal system. last night winfield's town council voted 3-2 against a resolution to pay the county. opponents say the sheriff did not have the right to tell them

what to do. human growth hormone can be used to treat cystic fibrosis symptoms. the disease stunts growth and causes body to produce mucus that clogs the lungs. in a sphudy, patients treat wad human growth hormone were able to gain weight and grow taller. researchers say the hormone may also improve lung function and strengthen bones. northwestern university is looking for volunteers for a parcon -- parkinson's disease study. aim is to identify characteristics in the body that could indicate presence or progression in the disease. volunteers will provide blood and fluid samples. receive brain imaging scans. northwestern is one of 18 research sites in the u.s. and europe taking part in the five year, $40 million study. it's sponsored by the michael j. fox foundation. and tom skilling is up next with the full forecast.

the city at midway airport. average date over the last 20 years is october 15. we aren't there yet. 69 at midway. there is no frost there any time in the foreseeable future. 71 at midway airport. and 72 at lincoln park. gorgeous here. not so pretty out in arizona. this state was lambbusted by storms that risk 80-mile-per- hourcap microburst winds through phoenix ask driving down force. now these storms have moved into utah. these are couple of utah shots. look at this high resolution shot. it's need to see the cumulus hugging the mountain ranges out there. note some of the wind gusts in thunderstorms this morning at flagstaff and sedona, park city and bryce, utah, have had gusts. heavier rains from utah to park city, cottonwood and page, arizona. so some wild weather out there and yet we will sit high and dry here between weather systems buffeting the new england coast and mid-atlantic today and big thunderstorms

that tower already at this hour over 40,000 feet in northern arizona and utah. in fact, there are tornado watches in effect out there in -- look at this. these are thunderstorm warnings and/or watches and tornado watches in the red areas. that's not the area you expect to see that and not at this time of the year. what's going on here is a cold pocket locked in there and one here in a really weird looking blocking pattern that features the omega-type jet stream pattern that slows everything down. so the rains will keep pouring down out to the west. when you get a blocking pattern, the weather you are in stays there for awhile and out west the weather folks are in and is raining. this thing is one of these high brt tropical systems that's called subtropical that means there is a temperature change across it and tropical system don't have temperature changes across it yet it may go tropical as lateen heat release from the top ever the clouds

turns the storm warm and could become otto but it's going out to sea. that's a little consequence to anybody except for folks in the shipping lanes. what is a consequence are these storms and rains and high winds and seas going into new england and then you see the other area of rain. kind of interesting to look at the radar. these are towering cumulonimbus clouds. we have great shots we put them up on the website and that's the hail covering the ground. we had hail an inch and three quarters in diameter. in some cases two and a half inches in diameter in arizona. not an every day occurrence and not something you normally see in october there. 69 in chicago. 70s widespread as we were in this thermal ridge. the dome of warm air that is sending temperatures -- send them up to 90 at rapid city yesterday and 80s in recent days in the plains. that sliding eastward. looks at the cool air here. you look at one or two weeks there is warm air in scandinavia interestingly. hard to believe anything going on there will affect us but

that warm dome is supposed to switch -- retro grade and move westward across the atlantic and take up residence in greenland and shove cool air down the eastern half of north america including chicago and the mid west in the one to two range. autumn not done with us by any means it sure is nice now with sunny, windy and warmer weather and 25 miles per hour gusts and mid- to highs in the 75 today. the winds are coming up to 12 to 24 and gusty. partly cloudy tonight. wind shifting cold front goes through and that's the scatter of clouds is all about. temperature at 51 with 40s inland. no frost out of that pattern and then sunny, a few degrees cooler tomorrow but that's still above normal at 73 because the normal high is 67 this time of year. and even warmer on friday into the mid-70s if not the upper 70s. and same thing on saturday but sunny can flirt with or just bump up above 80 after the marathon which will start in the mid-50s on sunday morning and see the race end with low

the plane landed on the roof of a fitness center. it's located near the intersection of route 59 and 75 street. at least one person has been taken to the hospital. no word yet on other injuries. time for sports. bears are looking to rebound sunday after suffering their first loss of the season. they will head to north carolina to take on the panther's team seek their first win and also the homecoming for the bear's prize free agent, julius peppers. the status of jay cutler still uncertain. peppers knows the defense will have to step up. getting to the panther's rookie quarterback jimmy clausen will be a key. >> we have to do better. not like playing alone or playing by myself. we all make mistakes and play better and get more pressure. we have to rush better stoz surgery on boozer's busted hand

emergency crews are working to clear thick red sludge and caustic muddy watter from several towns in hungary. toxic waste inundated the area after a gigantic sludge reservoir burst monday in a town about 100 miles southwest of budapest. so far at least four people have been killed. more than 100 injured and hundreds more evacuated. authorities say the reservoir had been clogged and seepage stopped buzz european union fears the spill could cross borders and turn into san ecological disaster for half a dozen countries. top white house adviser says it's untrue but political reporter bob woodward is breathing new life into a rumer. president obama may ask hillary clinton to become his running mate in 2012 and give vice- president joe biden her job. clinton was named secretary of state in the obama administration after the pair ran a tough race for the

it is time for our lunch break and mark, the executive chef of aj you italian bistro is here with us today and cooking with the fruit of the season. >> yes. perfect time to do pears and pumpkins. i decided to pick a couple things to go with the season. what i have here is a baby pumpkins. really nice to work with. unfortunately larger squashes like this butter nut squash isn't used. we could use him for something different. watch over us and make sure we do a good job. i will start out with the baby

pumpkin. this is going to cut the top off and core out the center. just to remove the seeds and everything and prepare it for baking. and then we will put -- we will use a little brown sugar and butter to keep the moisture and the brown sugar helps to keep it nice and sweet. and we will put the top back on and put a little water in. you want to use it so it steams inside. and then we will ut put the tin foil on top. >> how long does that have to bake. >> usually 300 degrees, about 15, 20 minutes. check it every once in awhile and put that in the oven and then we will make the sauce -- >> nice little presentation. >> and sea food and vergeitables and everything. we will heat the saute' pan up a little bit to start the sea
