what's special about the shows and the actors who are in them. tremendous sigh of relief that nobody on the aircraft or on the ground were killed. >> an amazing side. naperville. injured only the two people aboard. good evening. i'm micah materre. >> and i'm mark suppelsa. our top story scene around the country on wgn america tonight. that plane crashes moments after it took off. marcella raymond is live tonight with the latest. >> reporter: it took off around noon. crews have been out here nine hours now. right now there are two cranes that are poised to take off the roof and then that plane can eventually be removed. tonight seasoned pilots tell me that this crash does not appear to be pilot error but rather mechanical.

the napier airport and runway sit right in the middle of busy shopping areas and subdivisions. the airport has been here since 1955 and there has never been a fatal accident with its planes. tonight the fact that laura and morgan mckee survived is nothing near of a relief. the 63-year-old wife maureen was the passenger. the couple was flying to pittsburgh but crashed into the roof of export fitness, the building righting in front of the plane. >> if the aircraft's ability to climb is compromised for some reason, the pilot's only good alternative is to maintain a straight course and try to keep the airplane flying. >> it sounded like it was sputtering. it was wobbling a bit. i'm not sure what was going on. you could hear the engine. it sounded like it was going in and out. >> reporter: the plane crashed

through bricks and steel. there were 280 people inside the building. no one else was hurt. >> i felt the building shake as if someone was dropping weights. >> reporter: lloyd mckee was extremely safety conscious, i'm told. they are anxious to find out why this happened. and tonight the mtsb and the faa continue their investigations. as for the mckees, they're still in the hospital with broken bones and lacerations. they're in serious condition. >> thank you, marcella. new tonight: the sheriff's office taking over the investigation of a deadly crash involving an evergreen park police car. that accident killed brian dewitt, a high school student. the car he was driving collided at central park avenue. witnesses say it was a frightening scene. >> i was worried for my

daughter's life. she was the first one right by the window and i was in the middle. and i was scared to death first that the car was going to come up into the restaurant. then when i seen the guns drawn, i thought oh, my god. they're going to start shooting. >> a police officer was taken to a hospital but wasn't injured. their hearts go out to the dewitt family if their time of loss as they await the outcome of that crash. investigators testing bullets now from the deadly shooting spree from illinois to indiana yesterday. the man hunt continues for the gunman rolando alonzo. another man at thee scene was severely wounded. the shooter went to indiana where he opened fire on a farmer who played dead to survive. secret service isn't involved yet. the suspect is described as a

hefty white male last seen wearing a green win breaker and light colored jeans. a $16.5 million settlement between the city of chicago and tens of thousands of people claiming they were mistreated by chicago police. lawyers in the class action suit say 58,000 people submitted claims while saying they were mistreated. depending on how long they were in jail and the conditions they face, plaintiffs could get anywhere from $90 to $3000. chicago's fbi agents asking for your help tonight in busting a bank robber known as the swine flu bandit. he says he's wearing the mask because he's recovering from swine flu. then he demands money. he knocked over at least five chicago banks since september. anyone with information call the fbi office. a local airman killed,

daniel johnson. jae miller is in river grove with more on the fallen soldier. >> reporter: dan johnson was taking classes here to be an emt before deciding to be in the military. he was on his spend tour of duty when he was killed in afghanistan. he graduated from monona grove high school in wisconsin before moving to shiller park to attend college. he just got married in june and was looking forward to spending the rest of his life with kristin who is a cancer survivor. johnson left for his second tour of duty on august 26 and was only supposed to be gone for six months. his unit was hit by an ied tuesday in kandahar, afghanistan. his older brother tells me dan was an explosive ordinance disposal tech and risked his life daily while serving our country. >> he had the responsibility to

with varying mental and physical abilities. tonight it was ann annie. kathy morgan and her husband andrew started it in peoria. it was an instant hit leading them to form the penguin project foundation that helped other communities put or a show of their own. >> their speech skills improve. children that could barely be understood are now speaking clearly. children with autism who couldn't touch people or look you in the eye are now hugging their friends. >> reporter: in the penguin program, children without disables become peer mentors and are paired with the artist. as the actors perform, their mentors appear as extras on stage there to provide support if necessary. the pairs spend four months rehearsing gaining a better

respect for each other while creating friendships that last after final curtain. >> in the artist, their gifts that they have have really shown and developed over the four months. the mentors, i think they've learned about themselves about working with people with disabilities. and being champions for those people. >> you have been ready for this for four months. what's that been like? >> it's been kind of scary, but i know we all know that that's why our mentors are here. so if we forget a line in front of these hundreds of millions of people, they will tell it to us in our ear and we can say it out loud. >> it feels exciting about doing when you're in front of the audience. people clap and laugh. >> he's been fantastic the entire time. >> reporter: garrett's mother

jill says the experience allowed her autistic son to open up in ways he never had before. >> he sometimes has difficulty fitting in. this has been a great opportunity for him to be himself and everyone just loves him. and i just love seeing that take place. >> reporter: caylee played miss hanigan. >> we have an awesome everything. >> reporter: hailey's lack of eyesight didn't stop her from belting out little girl. >> i learned that everything is different. you just got to roll with it. and everything is great if you let it be. achievement. some participant -- parents even moved to tears. >> what does it mean to you? >> for the two hours that those kids are on stage, they don't have disabilities anymore. they're just kids. and they do an awesome job. [ singing ] >> what were you doing tonight? >> i was helping jonah here. we formed a great friendship. >> really? >> yeah. it was so awesome. >> it doesn't matter if they have a disability or not. they deserve to be treated like normal people. >> everybody wants to be awesome. and this is the greatest day. beauteous today. >> gorgeous. >> it really was. if ever that term applied to a day, this was it. although we've had a lot of those, haven't we? it really has been. do you know since summer began on june 1, it's the 14th warmest in the past 140 years. we wonder what happens after this. the rest of autumn tends to turn cooler than normal. and so does the winter. the winters that have followed in the years that were comparably warm, the winters had a slight edge towards being

snowier than average. in the short-term, there are storms east and west of us. that will contribute to the clear skies and keeping us warm. it hit 80 degrees today and pass at itasca and rockford. there's quite a downturn coming later next week. 69 tonight at o'hare with a southwest wind blowing. that will soon turn northwest. because there's a front that's coming through and it doesn't do much more than shift the wind. there's no moisture with it. look at the dew points. no way to get frost out of these temperatures or dew points tonight. look at the storm out west. beautiful shots from bluffdale, utah. here's tooele, utah. other rains have swept that area. this is one of those days where the deserts were cooler than

normal and even had some tornadoes in northern arizona. and parts of utah. we checked arizona since 1950 has had a total of 218 tornadoes in october. this is a weird time of year for them to see thunderstorms producing these kinds of winds and rain by western standards that is heavy. here you can see that storm right there. you can also see why this is the basis for the weather pattern being stuck in the united states. we've got weather systems racing from the gulf of alaska north of that system, each bringing warm air over the top of this cool air pool that's stuck in place. and raining tonight on california this thing being hung up as it is then hangs up the ridge in our area. something else is going on. we have another storm in the east coast. this is lifting air, migrates away, sinks. this is lifting air, it migrates away from that and

sinks. all the sinking motion compresses in the middle of the country and contributes to the warmth. here's this warm air dome right there that won't be going away until sometime next week. that's where it rained today significantly. and we've got a new tropical storm. actually it's called a subtropical storm. this is kind of a hybrid. not your standard tropical storm but looks impress on the satellite. it means there's actually a temperature change across the system. if it were a tropical storm or hurricane, those are uniformly warm. there's no temperature change. but with time, the air will warm up. and that may turn into a tropical system. but it won't worry anybody, i don't think, because that's going to stay out another sea. the red triangles are where the tornadoes happened today.

this system is slowly lifting out but tonight it's still raining in portions of california as we'll show you. and these other rains in the east coast still coming there. here's what's left of these once-tornadic thunderstorms that are now around colorado. and here are the ones that have flood advisories in the san joaquin valleys of california. they're used to the nice weather and we're raining. but we turned the tables. 67 at o'hare. not bad at this time of night. look at the warm dome. cooling under this weather system. all this sinking air opens up the skies. you turn sunny and you warm up in the process. this warm dome extends north. you get into heavy duty cool air. that's to spill down on us the middle and end of next week. that may be the beginning of a cooling cycle that will turn much of the rest of the autumn

cooler. and we can start seeing that change happen next week. but there's still some warm weather to go. even with a cooler trend settling in. tonight becoming clear, mild for this time of year. 53 for a low. winds are shifting northerly as we speak. tomorrow a gorgeous day. beauteous again, micah. sunny and moderately low temperatures. cool the shoreline to the upper 06s, low 70s. low humidity and light winds tomorrow. mid-40s inland, upper 50s at the shoreline. and sunny and warmer friday. we boosted the high to 80 and that would be the 147th day above 70 this year. a whole year normally only sees 140 of them. so more evidence of how warm. and you'll love the weekend.

the dew points on quiet nights. and so there is no prospect tonight of any frost in the area. we're the beneficiaries of sinking air from storms on either side of us. but that little dip in the jet stream worries us a little. it might mean an ace -- isolated shower thundershower. at the beginning of the race with daytime highs around 80. then you see on this animation how the cool air locks in. we're up to tuesday now. you'll notice that even monday columbus day when there lab lot of clouds and showers and a good punch of cool air with cooler air to follow. it's supposed to warm up later in the week before the real cool air spills in the week after. there's nothing cool about these temperatures. 76 tomorrow. 80 on friday. 82 saturday. and 81 sunday.
