story. first rally took place here with members of pipe fitter local 977 cheering him on with the race between pat quinn and bill brady getting tight, heavyweights are coming to help. with polls showing the governor's race a dead heat, pat quinn says he knows he must fight for every vote. he promoting himself as the job governor. >> i am the jobs governor. we have been able to help people get back to work. i'm running against someone who wants to throw thousands of people out of work. senator brady is bad for working people and that's our message today. >> reporter: quinn kicked off his back to work tour at a near west side union hall. appearing in a series of rallies in search cities to fire up the troops and remind supporters to show up at the polls. quinn is trying to win a full term after taking over for rod blagojevich. >> this is a real battle of my lifetime. we have to make sure that we work together in these next few weeks that we get our votes out

and working men and women can make the difference in this election. >> there is a real push to force us back to the failed policies of the past. we can't let them get away with it. we need to vote and vote for governor pat quinn. >> the governor is getting help from the white house. this radio ad featuring the president is airing this week. republican opponent bill brady launched his own tour, the clean break expes. pass weekend he won the "chicago tribune"'s endorsement. the paper's editorial board says brady is better positioned to say no to insider politics. and bill brady is campaigning this afternoon at chicago's columbus day parade downtown. now tomorrow vice-president joe biden will come to chicago. he will head land rally in support of pat quinn. on the near west side, judy wang, wgn news. green party gubernatorial candidate rich whitney is hoping to be include in the upcoming debates against governor pat quinn.

and his challenger republican bill brady. >> i'm here today to announce a campaign to get each of these civic organizations to do the right thing, respect the voters and include me in each of these debates. >> whitney says that the criteria to participate in the debate is based on public opinion polling and that's something he has no control over and is calling on concerned voters to contact debate sponsors to appeal on his behalf. a prominent hispanic politician is making an endorsement for chicago mayor. illinois commerce commissioner manihi flores says he is backing former chicago school board president gary chico for mayor. flores is a former chicago alderman and some had considered him a strong candidate for mayor. but flores says chico is the best qualified candidate. >> gary has time and again demonstrated strong leadership

and ability. he know city government and has vast executive experience. gary also knows what it takes to be an entrepreneur. but most importantly, gary threw his -- through his up bringing and work knows chicago and great people that make our city what it is. >> flores endorsement of chico is considered important because flores is a long time friend of congressman luis gutierrez who is considering a run for mayor. congressman mark kirk and illinois treasure aleksei giannoulias took their senate campaign to the national stage by debating on nbc's meet the press. each man was challenged on an issue his opponent hopes to exploit. kirk on inflated claims about his military record. >> given your own military record, why would you exaggerate these? >> i made mistakes with regard to my military misstatements. i was careless and i learned a very painful and humbling lesson. this is very important to me.

>> as an executive at his family's failed broadway bank, aleksei giannoulias was asked to explain questionable loans that the bank allegedly made-to- crime figures. >> my question, mr. giannoulias, were you aware there were crime figures getting loans by your bank. these aren't the kind of people we do business with. >> you didn't know? that's the easy question. did you know they were crime figures that your bank was loaning money to. >> we didn't know the extent of that activity. a wgn "chicago tribune" poll taken last month found that voters perceived giannoulias to be slightly more honest than kirk. today's the first day for early voting in illinois, but not all locations are open because of the columbus day holiday. if you like to vote early you should bring along a valid identification such as a driver's license or other government issued id with a photo. early voting continues through october 28. chicago police are looking into the cause of the

motorcycle accident that killed a mother of three. 34-year-old lacey barry was riding with a motorcycle club on lake shore drive near irving park last night and police say barry was heading south and changing lanes when her motorcycle struck the back of a car that was also changing lane's barry was thrown from the motorcycle and died. the driver of the carious not ticketed for any moving violations. investigators still trying to figure out what caused the cta bus crash that injured dozens of passengers over the weekend. it happened saturday night on lake shore drive near the i-55 entrance ramp. the number 6 jackson park express bus was heading south when it jumped the curb and hit a tree. 37 people were hurt. cta officials are examining the bus to see if it was in proper working order. they are also looking at surveillance video and a black box device inside the bus. the bears had to find a way

to win without a passing game yesterday. leave that up to matt forte who had a career day running the ball. he would pick up 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the first quarter. and that's all the bears would need as defense held carolina in check. julius pepper made a highlight reel interception. the bears win a sloppy game 23- 6, but a win is a win and the bears hold sole possession of first place in their division. next on the midday news, all systems appear go. workers test out the escape capsule that will bring up those 33 trapped miners. >> the head 6 the company at center of a toxic sludge disaster in hungary is desaned -- detained by police. like something out of the jettisons, google hits the road to test drive its robotic car. the capsule is outfitted with an escape hatch and enriched oxygen. >> police in hungary i have a rested the director of the metals plant where a reservoir began crumbling last week unleashing a flood of toxic sludge. at least seven people were killed and at least 120 others injured when the caustic sludge flooded three villages. parts of the town closest to the spill have been uninhabitable. and more than 700 residents were evacuated. experts say that the wall of sludge and the reservoir is likely to fall but so far there is no widening of the cracks in the wall. a british aide workers idcapped -- kidnapped in afghanistan may have been killed by her american rescuers. she was abducted in an ambush last month. nato first said that she died when her captors detonated a bomb as nato forces moved in to free her. but the u.s. commander in

afghanistan told british officials she may have been killed friday by a grenade dead in thed by u.s. special forces. the u.s. and british military are investigating the case. police believe that someone spiked the drinks at a house party in washington sending 12 college students to the hospital. happened friday night in suburban washington. police say the several people were unconscious but no one called for help. police searched the home and found no drugs. but they did find lots of alcohol. all 12 victims were treated at hospital and released. 11 of those victims were women, many of them were students at central washington university. police are awaiting results of toxicology tests and so far they have no one in custody. the republican candidate for governor of new york made controversial comments about homosexuality while pointing out his opponent took part in a gay pride parade and he didn't. take a listen. >> and that's not the example

someone hoping to get those jobs must multitask and meet new requirements. >> if you receive social security payments you won't see an increase in your benefit payments for the second year in a row. the government is expected to announce this week that they are -- there will not be a cost of living adjustment. the adjustments are usually automatically set each year based on inflation. the move is raising concerns for older americans whose savings and home values still haven't recovered from the recession. i'm bloomberg's angie lau live at cme group in chicago. price of corn and soy bean futures in chicago here today are rising on supply concerns. the u.s. department of agriculture forecast a smaller global production and that might squeeze consumers even more. analysts surveyed by bloomberg news say the rising cost of corn that cattle herds eat is behind the surge in the price

under 10 miles per hour the cooler denser air that sits out over the lake will generally start running inland particularly if your air temperature is more than 20 degrees above your water temperature. and the water temperature is in the low 60s now. so we will do that today. 79 at frankfurt. and 79 at joliet and that's the view from sauk village. gorgeous day across the metro area. widen our view and see the warm air covers much of the middle of the country. what an amazing change from as we say a year ago. just stunning. there is cool air taking shape on the north slopes of alaska through the northern tier of the couldn't in and that air will be spilling in. get a chunk of it to come in on gusty winds wednesday and thursday and next week we will turn a lot cooler. it's 52 at marquette. 62 at rhinelander and a little back door front here and winds are blowing in out of canada so it's cool in the upper mid west right now and we are only four degrees below where we were 24

hours ago and milwaukee is down 16 degrees. that largely due to a lake breeze and you can see the real chill is starting to take shape out to the west of us. that's the stuff that will come in behind a front that could bring us a shower tomorrow night and gusty northwest wind on wednesday. no wind. humidity 37%. the dew point is 49 and the water temperature at 62 with low mold spore count today. no pollen to speak of. see this little curl here? is that the weather system that came out of arizona where it produced the tornadoes and the 80-mile-per-hour microburst winds in phoenix last week. what a week it was in the southwest. most unusual. well, this twisting cloud mass is coming eastward and it's running into the dry air. so it will not rain on us here in chicago. its rains will stay out to the west. see this cloud mass right here. this is a cool front taking shape and vigorous one as well. dew points are up so that's why we got enough moitionier for

these showers to work on in missouri and getting the cirrus stratus clouds to blow off these showers out to the west of us, right there. it's not those showers we were looking at nor these big ones in louisiana and texas. it's this area of showers and those come in tomorrow night. behind them a gusty northwest wind will develop not only at surface but look what happens here. how this ridge develops in the jet and then the flow comes in from canada as we get to the middle of the week. so we will get more cloudiness the next couple of days ahead of that cool air from canada. we will have wind off the lake, that will cool things off a little bit today at lakeshore areas. but the real cool front is out here in this trough line and as this moves eastward like this not to reach us through tomorrow so we have another mild day tomorrow with cooling near the lake. this sprawling high pressure will turn the winds vigorously from the northwest on wednesday and thursday. and they will be real taste of atom in the -- autumn at that time. rainfall is limited across the country. there you see the showers south

of us. there might be a couple of showers approaching this area tomorrow night and they won't be anything to write home about. and here are the next ten days' showing this slug of cool air coming southward right there at the end of the week. then see the warm air coming back in again over the weekend coming up. but canada is filling with that big cool air mass and that will start dumping into the area next week. next week could be a chilly affair around here with some frost and freeze advisories in new england and also out in the west already today but certainly nothing like that in our area. and let's check the chicago forecast and it's a beauty. this is like july weather in october. in fact, the high yesterday of 84 and the 86 which tied a 1962 record, a 48-year-old record on saturday. it looks like those temperatures readings are like those that you find between july 12 and 28 at 84-degree high. warm spell continues today and makes the sun and clouds.

google has created a car that can drive completely on its own. they are currently testing cars that can steer, stop and start without a driver. a driver spotted one of the cars on the roadway in california. test cars have already traveled 140,000 miles. the car knows speed limit and directions while using cam scrawps radar sensors to detech other cars. accidents are said to be much less because the reaction time will be better than a human's reaction time. on the medical watch, new study finds autism is more common among children who had jaundice at birth. but no evidence jaundice causes autism. danish researchers analyzed

medical data on more than 700,000 children born in denmark over a ten year period. they found that nearly 9% of atistic children had jaundice as newborns while 3% of children who were not autistic had johnden at birth. children genetically predisposed to autism may be more vulnerable to jaundice. genetic make up is one of the main causes of obesity. new study shows that at least 30 different genes can cause weight gain. new studies show genes control activity in the brain that influence appetite while some control insulin levels in our body and determine the speed of our metabolism. scientists tested a variety of examples and found that they can even predetermine a person's potential body shape. 13 genes can show scientists if a person will be round or pear shaped. a new study finds that children who spend hours each day in front. the television have more

>> is that a new item on your dessert menu? >> it is on our dessert menu. we had it only a few months now. >> pretty new. >> definitely is. >> i'm checking out the menu while you continue on. what's in that big bowl? >> white chocolate that i premelted over warm water. you want to continue mixing it. why that's -- while that's going on we have egg yellow goldic and shoe -- egg yolk and sugar. >> no dessert is without eggs and sugar. gelatin is dissolved you add it to the white chocolate to melt it and then mix that together. graham cracker browned calamari. >> it's great american taste. give a little sweetness. something that's atwood for awhile. once this is incorporated just kind of turn this off and make sure don't splatter anywhere.

organic food ingredients. >> i try to. obviously just like anybody personally and whatnot, it was all based on financial need. we can definitely fit it in we will do that. >> so what do we do now? >> once you are done with that, some of this stuff out of the way. >> should we turn this burner off? >> this one is off. they are just a little warm still. basically get some of these from any place. or just use a baking pan. you have a home -- working. and basically just start spooning in portioning it out and into the -- >> and then from here once we get it portioned out we put it in the freezer. >> that is correct. >> for half an hour. half hour to 45 minutes until the gelatin starts to solidify. and then you would -- >> do you want it frozen or just coal? >> you can go completely frozen. the mousse with the gelatin in there won't be like ice criewbs where it's hard.

here which is pretty amazing. and it's already 77 in chicago. and while cooler than yesterday, the real cooling is going on in the northern rockies behind these frontal showers. they are to come through tomorrow night and we will get a taste of that as our jet stream winds as you can see here lock in like that from the northwest and blow some of that canadian air in ending our late season virven -- nirvana here on wednesday and thursday. but you know what? it's going to warm back up again over the coming weekend. that's pretty nice. it is the second dryest october on record here at midway airport. and records go back 82 years. look at the reality check later in the week, thursday -- actually wednesday 66. thursday and friday 62. but back to the 70s from all indications saturday, sunday. and then some chilly air will no doubt stop into the area next week. we will have more on all of this at 5:00
