dorian out of a line up. dorian appears at will county courthouse this afternoon and that's where wgn's jay miller is live with more. hi, allison. yes, supporters are already starting to trickle in for that 1:30 bond hearing. they say this is a simple case of mistaken identity and say police have the wrong man. >> i just could not believe that this is the person that they picked for this. >> dorian is being held on a $2.5 million bond in connection with the violent two state shooting spree that left one man dead and two others wounded. police say dorian, a lynnwood police officer on medical leave since october of '09, drove to rural beecher, illinois, last tuesday and asked two men about honey bees before opening fire on them. rolando alonso a father of ten was killed. police say he then drove to lowell, indiana, just across

the state line and shot another man after asking him about honey bees. last night supporters of dorian gathered at a lynn #w-d sports bar wearing t-shirts that read free brian. supporters say they plan to pack the courtroom to show the judge they had got the wrong man. >> brian is such a caring. he is like a teddy bear. just to talk to him and he would never do anything like this. he is just fun and loving and he cares so much about everybody. he always takes extra step to help you if you need. it he is always willing and able to help you at any time. there is just no better person. and the sad thing is that the killer is still out there. >> reporter: s now the lynnwood police department did issue a statement saying that dorian has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

the police chief went on to say, quote, we like all law enforcement personnel want the offender caught and brought to justice. i hope everyone will not rush to jum and remember every american including police officers accused of a crime are innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. end quote. now back here live at will county courthouse, dorian is charged with first-degree murder. other charges are expected again. supporters plan to pack the courtroom wearing t-shirts and arm bands to show the judge they have the wrong man in custody. at the will county courthouse, jay miller, wgn news. chicago police have identified the shooter in an apparent murder/suicide in the edgewater neighborhood which happened yesterday. police say the 50-year-old alexander roho of plainfield was a cook county correctional officer. he was walking with his estranged wife when he pulled out a gun shooting her multiple

times yesterday afternoon at north sheridon road and west grandville avenue and then turning the gun on himself. no one else was hurt during that incident. a new study suggests the problem of sexually abusive priests in the chicago archdiocese may have been underreported. the survey conducted by a coalition of advocates for abuse victims says more than half of chicago area parishes were once served by a priest who was accused of sexually abusing children. researchers reviewed priests assigned between 1917 and 2009. in all, the study says 97 priests were accused of abuse. the archdiocese says 65 of the accusations since 1950 were substantiated. but the archdiocese questions the conclusions of the study and says all of the priests named in it have already been removed from the ministry. cook county sheriff tom dart has apologized personally to an elderly couple's whose

home was mistakenly raided and damaged by sheriff's officers. 86-year-old anna jakymek and her bed ridden husband were in their bedroom last thursday evening when officers broke through their basement window and knocked down both of their doors looking for illegal drugs. 9 officers mistake was reportedly the fault of an informant who pointed out the wrong house to the officers. dart says he feels horrible and is making sure that the couple is compensated appropriately. a new deal may be reached allowing police services to resume in winfield, indiana. the small town has approved a deal to pay the county sheriff $17,000 for two months of police services. this comes after the town of winfield failed to pay the county $100,000 for police protection. the deal will take effect november 1 but services could resume once all the parties have signed off on the deal. commissioners of lakes county

are expected to sign it this afternoon. a manpower shortage in the chicago police department prompted a police protest last month. now there is word that the city will hire more officers next year. wgn's muriel clair is live at city hall with that story. >> good afternoon. the mayor laid it out in a quick news conference just about an hour ago and which he said chicago is about to get more cops on the street. now mayor daley announced today that his final budget proposal includes funding for new police entrance exam. the first in four years. and the hiring of some 200 new police officers. add to that, the reassignment of police officers on desk duty to street duty and by fall of 2011 the mayor says as many as 830 officers will be added to the street in a two year period. now the mayor questioned about the number of cops that may be

retiring indicated that the budget takes into consideration attrition. >> we have found out that not many are retiring as in the past as we saw fit. because of the economic conditions. we know that both in the fire and police department. they aren't -- they are staying much longer. yes, they are. they can't get a second job. that's their problem. >> when the mayor stopped short filling in the other budget blanks and he says he is waiting until tomorrow when he unveiled in full the 2011 proposed budget. live outside city hall, muriel clair, wgn news. someone is stealing parking meters boxes from the chicago streets. wgn's nancy loo is live at wells and north avenue in old town with all of the details. >> reporter: good afternoon. this is the latest wrinkle in the city's $1.1 billion praprivatization deal with a

private company for street parking but word that entire pay boxes are being stolen has some people worried about their personal information. they don't take bills and only accept quarters. leaving the majority of drivers to use plastic when feeding the city's new parking boxes. word that 20 have been stolen is a real concern. >> i would be scared. hopefully none of the information is stored in the box and only goes to their database. you never know. >> each box weighs about 200 pounds and is bolted into the cement sidewalks which is why many wonder how the thieves could carry off such a heavy heist. >> that's crazy. i didn't think that people could actually do that. being that they are bolted in the ground. >> chicago police say the thefts have happened all over the city. mainly in area five on the northwest side. only four of the boxes have been recovered but no one has been arrested. the latest problem follows a string of complaints over the

developing story this midday. the obama administration says it is lifting the 6 month moratorium on deep water oil drilling in the gulf of mexico. the ban was put into effect following the bp oil rig explosion and the white house has been underpressure to lift the ban which oil industry officials said was hurting the economy. a hearing for the armory psychiatrist accused in america's worst military base shooting spree has been abruptly adjourned until tomorrow. the hearing at fort hood, texas, will determine whether there is enough evidence to put

major nadal hasan on trial. hasan is accused of opening fire inside a crowded processing center on the base last november. 13 people were killed. 32 others were injured. nadal's defense has asked to delay the hearing for one month. chile's mining minister says the first of 33 trapped miners is expected to reach the surface later today. the rescue capsule that will carry the miners was tested successfully yesterday and the escape shaft was re-enforced. the trapped miners will come up one by one with the fittest men being brought out first. miners relatives have waited anxiously for more than two months to be reunited with their loved ones who have been trapped underground. the woman whose husband went missing near the tech/mexico border is pleading for help in solving the case. tiffany hartley and her husbound david were jet skiing near the texas/mexico border a

week ago. she says they were attacked by pirates who shot and killed her husband. mexican officials initially said they were looking for two well-known brothers in connection with the case. american officials say they heard nothing. >> we hear one story and hear another. just trying to figure out what's going to happen when i leave. if i'm going to leave. it's been very emotional, obviously, and very frustrating. it's not easy. >> the u.s. cannot prosecute or make arrests in this case because it did happen in mexican waters. david hartley's body and his jet ski have yet to be found. the search continues in colorado for a missing hiker from chicago. james nelson set out for a solo hiking trip on october 3. his 25 mile long hike up mount of the holy cross was supposed to take only five days. but as of friday, nelson still had not turned up and rescue

crews have been searching for him by foot and by helicopter. nelson is in-- is an experienced hiker but is not familiar with the treacherous terrain and did not have a cell phone with him. parents are asking the u.s. supreme court to allow them to sue drug makers for side effects caused by childhood vaccines. the case could open pharmaceutical companies to a flood of lawsuits. and the obama administration argues that the cases should be decided by a special vaccine court. now that court was set up in the 1980s to keep the vaccine supply stable by shielding companies from most lawsuits. vice-president joe biden visits chicago later today and will host the democratic party fundraiser and headline a labor rally for governor pat quinn. the white house has been stepping up its efforts to help quinn get re-elected. the most recent poll by rasmussen shows quinn trailing republican state senator bill brady by eight percentage points.

down on the effectiveness of the idea. costs are likely to out weigh the benefits. investors waiting for more details and direction from the federal reserve when the minutes of the fed's last meeting come out this afternoon. google is swooping in to invest in developing wind energy. google buying a 37.5% stake in the $5 billion atlantic wind connection project to spur the wind energy industry in the u.s. project could power up to nearly 2 million homes. meanwhile twitter cofounder evan williams throwing down the gauntlet challenging facebook for the lead in the on-line social networking market. saying that twitter will likely attract as many as a billion members. now facebook founder mark glukerburg said earlier this year almost a guarantee they will reach a billion members. that is about 14% of the world's population. and the people have spoken. the new gap logo lasting about

a week. it was unveiled last week. problem is customers really didn't like it. they let gap know through complaints on gap's facebook page and so gap listened and switched back to that iconic blue square logo that has branded the company for 20 years. right now on wall street we were seeing stocks fluctuating all morning today. right now we are seeing a mixed market as investors are concerned that china's growth will cool and also concerns that u.s. earnings will disappoint. live at the cme group in chicago, angie lau, bloomberg news. now back to you. some drivers in indiana may not have to pay fines for missing tolls in illinois. the illinois tollway says that 116,000 indiana drivers owe $7 million in tolls and fines. but those drivers were never told that they owed anything because of a system glitch. in august, they received

i was at art institute a week before last and see the impressionist exhibit and i saw the signage talking about how you could download these. so this is what you are talking about. >> we have been advertising it where people can see the paintings and see how they can get the app. what would you do on the ipad? >> well, hold it up and first of all we started off with touched it and bring up the cover shot which shows one of our most important paintings. and then you see a little bit about what we got. see a whole list here. and you can get a little chance to see what the galleries look like or how all this came to be. but the guts of it is to show you all the different artists that we have represented in the collection. and the chicago art institute is very fortunate to have a lot of great artists. let's jump right in to van gogh. we all heard of him, after all. so we have a little biography about vincent van gogh and then

you will tell me it's not going to stop for a few days. >> it's going to turn a little cooler but we were only going down to kind of where we ought to be. >> been downright hot the last couple of days. >> been amazing. you know, we were run being 12 degrees warmer than a year ago in october. it's been the toniest october in five years. the string of three 80s that we went through yesterday and look at this time lapse at the fog and low clouds. similar to those that rolled in yesterday. kind of dispaytonning as we mixed them out -- dissipating as we mixed them out. we look north up lake shore drive. it's been that string of three 80s is the longest one at o'hare field in 21 years. you have to go back to 199 to get something that -- 199 to get something tawarm this late in the season. well, the lake breeze is doing its thing in highland park. valparaiso at 71.

77 frankfurt and 75 matson. up above 70 at o'hare. won't be quite as warm as the 82 we saw yesterday or the 84 on sunday or the 86 on saturday. who is complaining? we will have mid- to upper 70s away from the lake and even some 80s in the far western suburbs. 71 at midway. 80 at niu as an example. went down to 79. you know our weather bug stations update the readings to us every 30 seconds by way of the internet and it's 76 at naperville with a beautiful weather in mawks where they -- in milwaukee where they had the fog and gorgeous in our area. look at the fall colors out at latin school in lincoln park. it is just a glorious time of the year and we have a beautiful fall color change underway right now. these are temperatures across the metro area being cooled right by the lake because of the light east, northeast wind. that wind turns northwest and picks up a sprawling canadian high pressure coming in to the center of the country and bring temperatures more typical of this time of the year instead

of the july-like warmth we have seen. 70s north to the twin cities and then get into the cooler air at duluth. there is a front that sits in this region and kick up a shower later on. see the cooling that goes on between say omaha and rapid city or williston or billings, montana. cooler there and they are gusty northwest winds as chunk of cool air off of really cool pool of air developing up to the north comes into the country. we will see more of this next week from every indcation. but this cool spell coming in the middle and the end of this week will be temporary. transient and it's dropped temperatures by double digits up to the north of us and you can see the cooling going on from montana to the dakotas south to colorado and wyoming at this hour and lowering dew points will kick out or push this 50-degree dew point here that's supported the haziness and fog in recent days out of the area. there is a rain system to our south and it has no implication for our area.

the front to the west may. it may bring up a brief shower toward morning. winds are just north at 3 at o'hare. 55% of the humidity. dew point 54. and the water temperatures actually risen the last couple of days to 63. the mold support count at low values. this buckle in the jet stream, this is the change that's going on. we have been in a blocking pattern while everything is starting to move now. the atmospheric musical chairs as we say here are in motion. and here is the ramification of that. namely an eastbound cool front that sits through the plains states and is headed this way. leading edge of the cool air sits about here. this big high pressure in this blue area right here has winds blowing clockwise around it. so the northwest winds will be locking in toward morning and blowing with gusto tomorrow and will push down the gulf coast. this is not cold air but is cooler than with a we have seen it represents about a 20 degree temperature drop and prompted frost and freeze warnings in the areas you see in purple.

have been making these desserts over and over again. >> bob was in the other studio doing another segment i snuck over to taste your cinnamon rolls, wonderful. what are you making today? >> today i'm going to show you how to make dairy-free cinnamon buns and use soy milk and dairy- free margin instead of milk and butter. >> will that make them kosher? >> that makes them dairy-free. kosher people can combine milk and meat in the same meal, for desserts that means after a meat meal we have to wait between one and six hours depending on our custom between eating a meat meal and eating dessert. >> an hour? >> it's more fun to serve -- >> that's a long time. that's why we serve dairy-free desserts at our celebrations and holiday >> what inspired your book? >> well, i believe that desserts are among the great pleasures in life. >> they are. >> and everyone deserves delicious desserts even if they are on a special diet whether dairy-free, sugar-free, gluten-

free for heal or religious reasons. i created an entire book of dairy-free desserts. >> what kind of reception are you getting from the kosher community? >> from the kosher community they are happy to have more interesting desserts. many kosher bakeries are still serving the same recipes that i had when i was a kid. we will first make the dough. cinnamon buns are easier to make than you think. the dough is warm soy milk, yeast and a little sugar and wait about ten minutes until that thickens and bubbles and then all you do is add sugar, flour, eggs, dairy-free margin and oil, mix that together and let it rise for an hour until it gets spongy like this. and that's what the dough looks like when it's been risen for an hour and then to make the filling it's simple. we have very soft dairy-free margarine to which we will add. >> that's margarine, not butter. >> that -- brown sugar and cinnamon and we mix it up together. >> no butter? >> no butder and no milk.

>> you fooled me. when you taste them you wouldn't know. and that was my goldthwait book was to come up with desserts that people wouldn't know were dairy-free. >> are they a little lower in calorie because of the changes? >> not necessarily. but for recipes which i could substitute oil for margarine i did and i try to take out as much sugar as i can while still keeping the taste really good. and i know a lot of people are afraid of making dessert with -- yeast dough, it bubbles and thickens after about ten minutes your dough will rise and your dessert will be great. >> don't be scared. people are really afraid to bake. >> i know. >> secret to baking is just follow the directions. >> thank you. >> don't try to improvise. if you have the ingredients in stock, don't go further then get it. >> roll out our dough. it's nice and spongy and put it on a two foot piece of parchment paper that's been

sprinkled with margin. i will add a little flour here and roll out all my cookie, pie on parchment paper because it doesn't stick and makes it easier to clean up. and then you can turn it as you are working and roll it in different directions. you can roll the dough about as big as the parchment paper and then we will spread our filling on top. >> i thought it was cute, paula said in the break that her husband is so tired of these cinnamon rolls she has been making them for weeks now, getting them right. >> he lost a lot of weight after i finished the book so he doesn't want temptations around the howses. >> you are a lucky man, homemade cinnamon rolls. the smell in your house. >> he knows cinnamon buns are my favorite desserts in the book. now we will spread the filling and you can help me with that. spread it across the entire dough all the way to the edges. >> we will go all over it. >> all the way. and really nothing makes your house smell better than when these are baking. >> nothing. >> really. >> i don't know we will have --

>> -- >> enough time to do all of this. >> let me show everybody how we will roll it up. all the way to edges and this is simple. >> she got it. baking is practice. >> have i four kids. i learn to do everything quickly. roll this all the way up into a big log. and then you will take a big knife and it's very simple and cut these into one inch pieces and you will see. >> put them in and bake them. >> see that you have them in and put them swirl side up. >> and here is the finished baking product here in the pan. >> really simple glaze. which all it is powdered sugar, boiling watt and vanilla and is withic that together. you can't do this wrong. if it gets too thick add water or too thin add more powdered sugar. then swirl these all around the buns and there is no rules for this. though if you are working with small kids you don't want them to do this too quickly because you could get -- >> can we eat those when you
