[ singing ] 69 days. all 33 miners safe tonight freed after nearly 24-hour constant rescue operation. and good evening to you. i'm mark suppelsa. >> i'm micah materre. the chilean miners rescued, all of them. all 33 have been rescued. the last one brought to the surface 8:00 chicago time. they survived 69 days below the surface. rescuers drilled through 2000 feet to get to them. total time of the rescue operation was 22 hours.

[ cheering ] >> and here's the last two men who got out. ariel yanez. his wife gave birth while he was trapped below the surface. a baby girl named hope. [ cheering ] >> finally the last miner got out. the foreman lewis urzua. he was credited with helping the men endure the first two and a half weeks without outside contact. here's the view from below the surface. after the last miner was rescued, they held a sign showing their job was done. >> joining us by phone from chile with what's happening on the ground, alonso cook. what are you seeing now?

>> well, there are crowds roaming through camp hope. jubilation, flags waving. people chanting viva chile. and some families are swarmed up the hillside that overlooks the san jose mine to light candles and sit next to their flags. the 33 chilean flags each with the names of one miner. the family put them up there as a sort of living shrine of a memorial -- not that they had died but basically as a symbol that they would not rest until the men had returned. now family members are up there, they've lit candles. we saw that some of them -- thought some of them would take the flags away. but the ones we spoke to said they plan on leaving the flags there to stay there as a

permanent memorial to what happened here at the san jose mine. >> just miraculous. tell me about those five heros. the rescue workers. are they still down there? >> well, three of them are. two of them have already surfaced. they were warmly thanked by the chilean mining minister. they've done a great job of preparing and aiding those men to get above. but officially the mission is over. of course they won't totally be over until that final special forces medic comes to the surface. >> i guess the biggest question now for everybody is they look so good physically even the oldest from the youngest. now it's amental stability. is there depression? how will they cope with the fame and fortune?

what are they saying about where we go from here with that? >> they haven't spoken too much about the future. they've really given thanks to the government, the families, to the chilean nation and all those involved in organizing the rescue. the media appearance has been one of giving thanks. you saw mario over there, he was the big one that gave out rocks as gifts and jumped like an animating rock star upon his release from the capsule. later on he was a little more sober when he was in the triage area. with his family present. >> sorry to interrupt you. we're running out of time. thanks so much for all you've done the last several hours for us from chile. >> keep following that mine rescue on our website

happy. >> i knew he's innocent. i knew he didn't do it. >> he's got the thousand yard stare like someone coming back from war. he hasn't been to war. >> reporter: it's been that kind of day. outside court today in joliet, emotions boil over, a scuffle between a dorian supporter and a news camera man. that photographer struck in the face. 37-year-old brian who's there to have his murder charge dismissed. the cops lawyers telling reporters his life and police career will never be the same again. >> what was done here was outrageous. there was a rush to judgment. they had in their minds that brian dorian was a suspect. >> reporter: the suspect in a cross border shooting spree that left one man dead and two wounded.

>> can you talk about the charges tonight? >> reporter: last week the county seat was rocked with the afterhours arrest of the cook county board president's right hand woman. 24 hours later, todd stroger as the cameras tried to get his reaction. >> justice will be served and we'll help the state's attorney and anything they need. i'm not going to comment on the case because i don't know anything about it. >> reporter: or did he? e-mails obtained by wgn reveal the backroom wheeling and dealing that may have led up to this arrest. these e-mails show what prosecutors allege. carla oglesby wants her hands on lots of county money. but first she needed the president's okay. >> he's going to give the okay to start the process of payment. >> reporter: we showed the e- mails to larry sufferton. that's why days after oglesby

up by oglesby in which her financial interest was not disclosed. the company got the deal and oglesby allegedly got the money. as a county employee, it's illegal to do business with your own company. >> given out to reputable companies. >> reporter: as questions started being raised about these 24-9 contracts, the stroger administration went into damage control. this e-mail talks about talking points for reporters. in one draft, it called oglesby a former manager. an hour later, it said oglesby owned the company. in may stroger suspended her for five days saying she made a mistake. >> he treated it as if it was a minor infraction like a jaywalking ticket. when in fact as the states attorney has connected all the dots, it's over $300,000 of state and federal grants that have been wasted. >> and now she awaits a court

tonight looking for answers as chicago police question the mother. prosecutors have hours to decide if she or her boyfriend will be charged in the death of 2-year-old angel hill. julie unruh spoke with that father today. >> all i can think of is i have to put my daughter in a box and close the lid. that's what i have to do. >> reporter: a task no participant -- parent should ever have to do. but two days after she was found dead in her home, a shell shocked father is faced with burying his daughter. multiple injuries and blunt force trauma are the results of the crime. >> a baby gets punched so hard that her lungs puncture her organs. and the bleeding in her brain is to substantial that in two hours she dies. >> reporter: he's angry at the

people who took away from their mother. the mother's history with dcfs is not good. in 2006 the mom also named angel hill was guilty of abuse by investigators. she broke her son's leg when she was only 2 months old. in 2008 the agency found reports of neglect. >> they were supposed to protect my child. help protect her and they did not do that. >> reporter: he's so angry he put his own fist through the a wall. now he's left to pick up the pieces of his owand his daughter. >> there will be no prom. there's no first grade. no first dance school. no nothing. and i was cheated. i was robbed. my baby was robbed. you know, it just ain't fair. >> reporter: cook county prosecutors are working with police detectives as we speak.

no charges have been filed yet. right now the victim's mother and her boyfriend remain in custody. mario hill has no money to pay her her daughter's funeral, but right now his focus is to fight for custody of his surviving son. any worker safety fines after a tragic accident in indiana. gabriella cedillo was an extra when she was injured. she was driving a car in a scene when a piece of metal went through the windshield. they blame on the cable towing a car. the film crew took all precautions. the cedillo's family is suing. mayordaley's final budget today. but the numbers look like this. it's just a little higher than a $6 billion budget.

after this injury i couldn't move anything but my arms a bit. >> reporter: hoping he'll regain some function in his legs. it's been a series of baby steps for him. the impact of his crash crushed his neck. a devastating injury to his spinal cord. >> considering i couldn't sit on the edge of a bed by myself after my injury and now i can sit and balance myself and do a transfer out of my wheelchair into a bed and those types of things, yeah it was extremely hard right after the injury. >> reporter: perhaps one day life will be easier for patients like david. that's what doctors hope at the first human clinical trial using stem cells for spinal cord injuries gets off the ground. >> this is the first study. it is a safety study. it's not likely that this study is going to cure paralysis.

but we hope it will be a first step. >> reporter: step one a safety check. the doctor hopes to enroll up to ten patients in the phase one trial ensuring it is well tolerated in humans as it was in extensive animal studies. >> there were no significant safety issues and some return of function in the animals. >> reporter: a glimmer of hope in a catastrophic situation. patients who suffer spinal cord damage and are left with no feeling or movement below the level of injury have a less than 1% chance of spontaneous recovery. >> when your spine fractures, it moves one bone in relation to another and it squeezes the spinal cord between them. so it's a crushing or contusion type injury. >> reporter: in the study they will inject a particular type of stem cell into the site. cells that create the outer layer of tissue that wraps and protects the nerves.

sugar grove. we've had some 20-30 mile-an- hour winds delivering the cool air. if you think we're chilly, look at the weather bug stations in minnesota and northern wisconsin where eagle river is down to 35. so we have some real authentic autumn air coming into the area instead of this incredibly warm air that we've enjoyed the last couple of days. 52 at o'hare tonight. 52 at midway airport. 49 at wheatfield. other temperatures around the area and you can see the 50s out to the east of us. but i wanted to show you how our thunderstorms went on to produce formidable wind gusts at kokomo where there was damage. there's the view from the city of the showers that departed early this morning. the whole weather pattern in the country resolves around this big jet stream buckle that has developed. into this area. look what happens when they make contact with the east

coast. that's bonogenesis out there. meaning the central barometer falls reading 25-millibars. a major expected to form right up towards boston. they could have 70 mile-an-hour winds near maine. wanted to show you our dew points which are dropping into the 30s and of course drier air can cool off. that's why this air mass may produce 30s in our suburbs tonight. most sections of the midwest posting double digit pullbacks from 24 hours ago. you can see the broad expanse of 20-30-degree dew points. that's a sign this canadian air has no moisture in it.

we have a moderately cool day on the way tomorrow. then a reinforcing surge of cool air could turn on the lake effect rain machine on friday and drop temperatures a bit before the weekend warm-up. here's where the storms are that went across the area earlier today. and, again, these are the basis for that storm that's going to blow up on the east. these will travel across the peninsula near d.c. then take advantage of the heat energy from the atlantic to explode as it moves up towards boston and produce these powerful almost hurricane-force winds gusts. and heavy rains particularly in the areas upsloping. the cool pool right here is carved out well and you can see the beginning of that storm system that has flood advisories in upstate new york. watch this thing quickly develop. here's the low. our big high pressure is joined by a reinforcing surge of cool
