[ no audio ] we're going to

show you that video in a moment or two. the security camera video came from a business adjacent to the riverdale crime scene. that crime scene, the home of 52-year-old melvin burnside. let's look. investigators scoured video from the murder scene and found this. a shot of the man they think they're looking for. there's also a sketch courtesy of a second victim in the deadly attack. a woman who police say got a good look at the gunman. >> melvin burnside was shot to death in his home. at this time, there is no one in custody and investigators are interviewing witnesses. >> to the family, our condolences and prayers are with you. >> i don't understand who would do this to my father and take him from us. >> reporter: 52-year-old melvin burnside was loved in riverdale, lived on this quiet street for more than 20 years, gave to charity, worked as a volunteer. >> he was a very kind and sweet

and noble man. there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for anybody. >> reporter: but the successful businessman also flashed money around from time to time, friends say. and melvin worked until late last night at the family bar reese's lounge. investigators are looking into the possibility that someone may have followed him home. the possible suspect described as a black male, 18-27 years old with a medium build. 5'5" to 5'7" wearing a rough- colored hooded sweatshirt with white lettering on the front. >> the type of person he was, i would wonder why somebody would target him. >> reporter: and tonight friends are gathered at the bar to remember that man. >> fond memories of melvin. hell of a personality. >> reporter: it was half an hour of closing up that bar last night that melvin was shot and killed at his home.

police optimistic someone will recognize the person in that surveillance video or on that sketch. give them a call. >> thank you very much. some other news now to report some good news. three of the trapped chilean miners are hope tonight. they did have to undergo a battery of tests at the hospital. and they had a visit from the chilean president. it seems everyone wants to talk to the national heros. chile's president says right now it's time to take care of the men. the november 2nd midterm election weeks away, will overseas votes count for the military men an women? and a candidate's name is misspelled. prank? more on these stories. >> reporter: one-third party candidate says he's having trouble getting notice before the election. now he's got another problem.

combine that with a missed deadline to send ballots to illinois military and we could have an early november mess on our hands. >> but i think something needs to be done above and beyond what they're doing. >> reporter: sticking up for rich whitney. a lawyer who will be known to electronic voters as rich whitey. that's how his name pops up. >> on the one hand, the city of chicago is a laughing stock. on the other hand, our candidate kind of has been tagged with a name that really isn't that nice. that news story has gotten out and we don't know what effect that has on voters. >> reporter: they plan to correct the error on about 8000 machines but not until sunday. so far roughly 4700 ballots with the misspell having cast. and the chairman says there's nothing to be done to change that. >> we feel bad because the

ballot screen right now as it stands now is correct. it's the only secondary fail safe part of the process, the review screen. we don't feel it necessitates stopping early voting. so we don't feel that it will result in the loss of votes for the candidate. >> reporter: in other problems statewide, mark kirk and bill brady want to know how military absentee ballots cast will be counted when the state of illinois missed a deadline to get them overseas. must be mailed out by september 18. voters have until november 1st midnight to postmark them. those ballots have proven to make a difference in tight races when every vote has counted in the past. the two candidates said our service members deserve an immediate investigation to gather all the facts and find an appropriate remedy to ensure their ballots are continuing in this election. tonight the illinois board of

elections isn't worried even if other states have been sued over the mistiming for election. >> any postmarked before midnight the day of the election, the election officials have 14 days after the election to count that ballot. >> reporter: to make sure all absentee ballots will get counted overseas, they will be talking to the justice department tomorrow. rich whitney turned rich whitey, no one believes it was malicious in any way. it appears to be nothing more than a very unfortunate typo. >> thank you. as early voting did get started this week, the first lady taking advantage while she was in town. she cast her ballot at the martin luther king community center. here to raise money for giannoulias and other democrats. she cast her ballot, gave some hugs, but is catching slack tonight for what she may have

we have been enjoying all of this nice weather. that may be a sign of not so good things to come. >> la nina falls are typically warm. and this one has been over much of the country. we go into volatile winters after that. so it'll be interesting to see.

that block that has been causing such problems. beautiful pictures from all over the area. but from morton arboretum there. look at those beautiful shots. certainly one of the most beautiful corners of the chicago area. tonight, though, we've got reinforcing cool air coming down the lake. this is a full day animation. you can see the high clouds thicken up during the day. tonight as we come to you, it's raining at the lake a bit in milwaukee. and we've got con convective cells forming. that lake effect cloud cover on. 70 at joliet today. but 60s the area. 58 tonight at midway.

59 at gary. look at the rains, though, out east. boy is there a storm going there. this is rehoboth beach. see the rains there? look at key west being brushed by the northern most showers by paula that is riding right along cuba and through the florida straits tonight. looks like the heaviest rains are between cuba an the straits. look at this. development on the east coast tonight. that was expected. all this as a storm out in the gulf of alaska pumping warm air into the continent. that comes crashing in here. this is what you saw in the area today. a dome of cool air coming in. these things as they curl about the base of the trough are

spinning three inch rains and 60 mile-per-hour coastal winds. it's raining buckets tonight in new york city and through new jersey. but in our area, we're in the 50s and we got a reinforcing lobe of cool air just to the north of the front. and you can see how they pack in here. and drop them during the day tomorrow. we'll be hard pressed to get much above 60 degrees. and bring lake effect rain showers to northwest indiana. maybe swipe chicago with them. west winds at 10 now. moderate mold spores today. here's our model forecast. you can so ethylic effect precipitation and how it swipes the northeast illinois coastline. and also northwest indiana. that is this mesolow dropping southward. this thing will be a short lived affair that goes by us.

and we get these southerly winds to warm us into the 70 by saturday. look at this thing. this big rain, producing clouds out to the east. boston is there. and you can get a feel for the kind of storm coming together there. this thing went off the peninsula there. maryland and delaware. and the thing now is moving north and deepening explosively. bomogenesis as we say in the weather department. the winds generated by that process are something. meantime, here are the showers coming down the lake. and in association with this cool push and we've got frost advisories in parts of eastern tennessee. look at the rains this system will generate through new england. if you go above 2000 feet, they may get snow.

the mountains out to the east. then here are the big rains going through the florida straits with miami right there, key west there. and lots of rain to the south falling on the florida keys tonight. here in chicago our forecast is partly cloudy with a passing shower possible toward morning. gusty and shifting winds overnight. they'll be blowing from the northwest by morning. low temperature down to 47. tomorrow partly cloudy, blustery, and cooler. occasional cloudy spells near the lake. a couple of sprinkles or lake effect showers may occur. we'll have a high of 61. then it clears out tomorrow night. upper 30s inland. we're talking 40 in the city. and southwest winds by morning that pick up during the day saturday and take us into a 70- degree saturday with warmer weather. our seven-day forecast keeps

temperatures kind of moderate. low 60s at the lake front. mid-60s inland on sunday. then 60 monday, maybe a sprinkle or shower. then the coolest tuesday through thursday of next week. and we're also seeing signs that this dry weather pattern may be going to turn wet in the second week of our forecast. we'll be tracking those things in the days to come. >> not that we don't need it. >> a little moisture. you don't like to go into a winter dry like that. frost can get deeper into the soil that way. and trouble in the fall growing season to make it up. >> thanks, tom. they all have chicago roots. but their impact on television and film are far reaching. tonight our micah materre hosting the achievement awards. mary dee and documentary

there's some stuff. tillman back at practice today. some others were not. we'll see how it goes by sunday. if the line holds and cutler delivers and if matt runs well, then the bears offense can be good. their defense more iffy. rich king with more. >> reporter: if briggs ankle keeps him on the sideline sunday, ewu was cut by the jaguars this season after four campaigns mainly in the jacksonville special teams. >> i'm just going to play within my capabilities. not try to do anything outside of the defense and not try to be lance briggs. he is a pro bowler. horizon i'm just going to try to ply inside myself. reporter: the defense racked up five sacks last sunday. each week they gain more confidence each week they get better.
