prior to sentencing, former alderman ed brodoliac said that this had been a long and difficult ordeal for everyone. i'm sorry he said. i made a stupid mistake and i couldn't be more sorry. >> he is very happy that it's over. and that he can get on with his life. >> reporter: the didn't look happy in court. vrdolyak scowled when his sentence was handed down. he gets prison and five months work release and five months home detention. plus a fine. his resentence for his role in a scheme to get a million and a half dollar kick back on a gold coast real estate deal. the man known as fast eddie got probation the first time around. an appeals court called that a slap on the wrist and ordered a new sentencing but a new judge. his lawyers wanted probation a second time.

prosecutors wanted three and a half years in jail. >> i didn't think the government would have been this harsh in their pleadings and in their argument. if his name was vrdolyak. >> this is a case that warranted incarceration. to send a message that if people are thinking of committed crime to their company, whatever it may be, there is a strong possibility of jail in their future. >> reporter: he'll have to serve the entire 10 months before being released. he won't have to spend thanksgiving or christmas though. chicago's first lady is in a washington, d.c. d.c. hospital tonight. maggie daley was admitted to georgetown medical center after experiencing pain in her right leg. she was in the nation's capitol to benefit the susan g. komen

foundation. i spoke with her physician who says test results show no significant change in the status of her known cancer. that's been stable for months. dr. rosen suspects she may have had a microfracture in her leg. she'll remain in the hospital for observation overnight. a late news conference tonight of superintendent scheduling the unusual late hour talk about allegations of misconduct among the force. dan ponce was there for us tonight. >> reporter: police not saying much tonight about this incident. they will also say that a police -- they have just now learned that a police sergeant allegedly was involved in a disturbing incident in which the sergeant allegedly abused a suspect while the suspect was in custody. police superintendent jody weis would not say who or when or

where this took place. however, sources tell wgn news that this incident involved a student or former student at columbia college. the incident allegedly happened at 2 east 8th street. that is a building where many students reside. according to sources, the student in question or former student in question was a resident at this building last year. apparently last thursday night, he showed up at the building intoxicated. he tried to get in when security called police. police showed up to this building, and the former student in question allegedly threw a beer can at the officer. sources are saying the officer then took the student inside a room at 2 east 8th straight. and beat this guy up. now, sources telling us that the police sergeant beat him up pretty bad.

the death of one of their young men serving in the marine corps in afghanistan. he is allen katherwood. a guilty verdict for a man who admitted to killing a man's dog after it urinated on his manicured lawn. >> reporter: yeah. manicured lawn, home. this is the home where charles clements lives. he's not talking tonight but is free on bond after being found guilty on second degree murder. the mother tells me he deserves a harsh penalty for killing her son. >> i believe that if i was a cruel person, he should have got the electric chair. but i don't want to be the one to judge him. i think that the verdict he got was the verdict that was handed down. >> reporter: pa trishaw talking tonight about charles clements who killed her son in may after

her son's dog urinated on the mans a lawn. to await sentencing after a jury found him guilty in the second degree murder of 23-year- old joshua sanchez, a father of two. it was mother's day when sanchez was gunned down yards from his home. his mother who's now raising his 2-year-old son also named joshua says she'll never forget that day. >> mother's day will never be the same to me. i look at the seven females that was on the jury and i wondered to myself if they were in my shoes, would they have given a second degree verdict? i wonder. >> reporter: and clements will be sentenced on december 21. he faces up to 20 years the prison. >> jae miller, thank you. dwayne wade took the stand today. >> that was in a custody battle against his ex-wife. the couple divorced in june and are fighting for custody of

their two sons who are 8 and 3. wade testified he was a victim of domestic violence after his ex-wife physically attacked him in their home. wade also denied several claims made by his wife including drug use and domestic violence allegations. he says he's not seeking sole custody of the children and doesn't want to punish his wife. they are asking schavon to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. the moment of silence serves as a secular and practical purpose in settling down students at the start of the day. the ruling came in a lawsuit followed by atheist talk show host rod sherman and his daughter. sherman calls that decision a move of activism and he vows to

raise your taxes. >> reporter: but there's more to this race than taxes. both are far apart when it comes to abortion, guns, and gay rights. quinn long a populous aggressive supports gay rights and same-sex civil unions. brady a conservative lawmaker from bloomington opposes abortion in all cases. and proposed a ban on gay marriage. and on guns! law enforcement needs to enforce the existing laws. >> reporter: where do voters stand on those issues? that's what we asked. on the issue of abortion, half of voters believe the law should stay the same or have less restrictions. more in line with quinn. 41% say there should be more restrictions or that it should be illegal. more illinois residents than not oppose same-sex major.

but a majority of 57% approved having civil unions. again more in line with quinn. nearly half, 49% want tougher gun laws. again siding with quinn. only 29% wanted the laws loosened and just 13% are satisfied with current gun laws. the winner will be decided by the undecided. among undecided voters at the beginning of this month, more sided with quinn on the issue of abortion. look for democrats to use social issues to rally their base at the end. rick pearson, chicago tribune for wgn news. new budgets are out of metra and pace riders will not pay for to ride next year. instead the metra board says it will shift from system building into day to day operations. pace will continue to trim

so much elation. crowds cheered the rescued miners in chile as three of them have been sent home from the hospital. tonight we're hearing from one of the men. richard villarel was the 28th pulled from the mine. his wife is due to deliver his baby this week. he thought he would never get a chance to see the baby. >> translator: we were working at that time. and all of a sudden, the mountain came down. 3 meters away from us.

the front range of the rockies where it is sinking and compressing and warming, by the time it gets here we don't have that compression. but we will see 30 mile-per- hour afternoon indagations that will build into the area. tonight couldn't be more difficult. 53 at midway. 46 at joliet. this is dry air so it cools fast. the beautiful fall colors as evidenced at the lanton school today. and look at the rains that hit with the storm that hit the new england state. laconia, new hampshire over 4 inches. and this wind gusts. mt. washington at one point today had 81 mile-per-hour wind gusts. sustained at 72 miles an hour.

and 1/16 of a mile of snow and blowing snow. snowing in the adirondacks and there were frost and freeze advisories to the east of us. michigan and indiana in on those tonight. we'll escape the frost-type weather. but there's a little front here. and ahead of it, the winds are blowing with gusto. that's why it's warmed up. see this dome of air here? we can thank this arc of clouds here. this roared with 100 mile-an- hour winds into the western end the continent yesterday. jet stream e flattening, its load of air is going across the country on these western winds and replace these temperatures with something more akin to september-level readings. 63 here but 71 in omaha. and the movement is for this to come east. then we get a chunk of cold air. maybe the coolest air of the

season perhaps tuesday or wednesday next week. the good news there is everything just keeping moving. we'll be warming up again later next week. no sign this cold air that's building to the north is going to come into our area and take up residence for an extended period yet. and in fact, we warm up the latter part of next week. cools into the following weekend. but warm up after that. 55 here. 44 in madison subpoena this is a fairly dry air mass. and look at the low temperatures. the cold stuff is up in the arctic and content staying there. that's not coming down anytime soon. here's the storm out east. this thing is rotating. it's spinning like this. the winds have been howling through central park and boston today. then roaring on shore and upsloping in maine where there have been extraordinary amounts

of rain. these are continuing northward into the st. lawrence valley. turn to snow about the 2500-foot level. as this lope of cool air developed the big storm. it's lifting out. in comes the shot of warm air tomorrow. we'll straddle the coldest air to the north of us and the warmest to the south. sunday and monday bring a chunk of cool air on here and then this warmth willing flooding eastward and we'll be into the 70s by the end of next week. it's possible we get get here next saturday night and talk about another warm weekend. there's what's left of paula. this storm caught the jet stream and just ripped it to shreds. that was the storm that was a hurricane in the eastern caribbean flirting with the yucatan peninsula. and doused key west with 2 inches of rain yesterday. all gone tonight. clear and seasonalbly cool

glen brook south high aren't your average cross country team. >> this is definitely a unique team. not just because of tommy. but the whole team itself. >> reporter: tommy is senior carroll. he's totally blind. he lost his sight from retinal cancer at 13 years old. >> i enjoy running. i like the feeling that it gives me. tommy's been running since middle school. but he doesn't run the course alone. >> everybody helps out in some way. some people just run with him more often than others. >> i'm just there to be his eyes. to hold on to and you'll warn him if there's any obstacles up ahead. and he pretty much sets the pace for you. >> reporter: a pace that's pretty fast. although his teammates support him, sometimes it's bumpy. >> i'm sure he can show you the scars and bruises he has.
