dangerous but there was nothing she could say or do to stop her youngest child from being a cop. 28-year-old daniel vasquez is in his final phase of becoming a chicago police officer. he started training six months ago and is set to graduate november 16. the first day in the academy, recruits are told it is their job to serve. >> law enforcement is about public service. we go over and over that being a police officer, it's your job to help people and to go out every chance you get and effect people's lives. >> reporter: that's what daniel vasquez was doing this morning when he stopped on i-55 to help a stranded motorist. when he was approaching the car, another vehicle hit the median and crashed into him. he was taken to the hospital with brain injuries. >> we're just hoping for a speedy recovery. >> reporter: this is not the first tragedy to hit the

academy. in july officer soderberg was killed. the mood around this building today is somber to say the least. for recruits, this is a big eye opener. >> i think it drives home the realization this is more than just a job. this is people's lives we're talking about. and i think they got a dose of reality today. >> reporter: daniel vasquez is in critical condition tonight. his wife and family by his bedside. he is the father of three children and a fourth on the way. the 26-year-old driver who hit him overnight was given four tickets including driving without a license. >> thanks. authorities searching for an niu student said today they haven't ruled anything out yet. antinette keller disappeared about a week ago. there are now 40 investigators on the case looking for clues

last night but he couldn't go into further detail because it was a ongoing investigation. a tv has used his office in a mock raid. that confused reporters who thought it was a federal raid. the retrial of rod blagojevich won't begin now until april 20. that trial had been scheduled to start in january. at a hearing today, blagojevich's lawyers argued they couldn't be prepared by then. blagojevich will only have three court-appointed attorneys this time around versus the 15 he had on his own dime in the last trial. >> it's like, let's say a football game ends in a tie and it's got to be replayed. it wouldn't be fair if one team could bring all players out and the next team only has five players. >> first trial, the jurors were deadlocked on 24 counts.

this weekend. we've got a edmond fitzgerald storm to blow up at the canadian border. it may bring very chilly air in. more on that in a second. here are the highs around the area. joliet hit 70 coming off lows that were in the 20s this morning. putting frost in the ground even here in the city. 54 tonight at o'hare. it'll be a warmer night tonight than last as clouds assemble and blanket the area. there are the dew points. still low. which is why it's so amazing we got some sprinkles to the ground in this dry air, but we did. there are the temperatures around the area. lincoln park at 62. but here's the weather system coming in.

this is vernal, utah. this is from colorado where the mountains are being covered with snow tonight. mountains hidden by the clouds there. snow falling at high elevations. here's our storm. if you look at the way the rains are laid out, they're in clusters. that's about the way they're going to fall. they'll come down in one moment then the next moment we get a peek at the sun. we want to show you how active the weather is as you go west. as we look deeply into the pacific, look at this jet stream. it practically spans all 3000 right there. these clouds mark the extent of that jet stream and that's this one right here. the stormy one that comes in with a little wave tomorrow. but then this block buster is supposed to move across the country and make a storm tuesday and wednesday. it will bring us powerful winds

and a temperature drop between tuesday and wednesday. 64 here today. 77 at st. louis. 75 at omaha. that is the weather for tomorrow and sunday. but that's the reservoir of chilly air we'll be tapping next week. at this hour it's still 66 in des moines and omahaha. we have double digit increases across the heart of the country. so a warm weekend by october standards on the way. normal highs this time of the year will be in the upper 50s. we'll be in the upper 70s. there is the shower and thunderstorm clusters. these are the ones that went through parts of our area. you see them retreating by way of northern indiana right now. but these more formidable looking storms have clustered up in kansas and missouri and they are northeast bound. these are fairly respectable thunderstorms. but you'll see how you get a

little batch there and a little batch there. there are holes in between them. those are dry periods. that's why we won't see continuous rain all weekend. we exported our cold, frosty air off to the east. and out west look how the snows are accumulating in the mountains of colorado and the range in utah and up into the tetons and back into montana and idaho there. we will see some very chilly air as that cooldown comes into our area next week. by midnight, we're partly cloudy, we turn overcast by 4:00 a.m. see this scattered of showers through the morning hours tomorrow? these might include a clap of thunder. they should thin out far time in the afternoon only to well up again later in the afternoon and become more numerous tomorrow night and sunday morning. then sunday afternoon is partly sunny again. windy enough to maybe brew a thunderstorm late in the day. but sizable periods of that
