triple murder in south suburban harvey have police leave nothing stone unturned. i'm steve sanders. >> i'm allison payne. first northern illinois university is a campus on edge today. investigators are trying to figure out if human remains found near the campus of those of a missing freshman with so many unanswered questions students are fearing for their safety. julian crews is live in de kalb with the latest on that

case. >> reporter: good afternoon. there are unconfirmed reports that the body may have been discovered well before saturday when police made their public announcement that human remains had been found. a press conference set to happen this afternoon could shed more light on the investigation. in the mean time over the weekend the missing girl's family talked publicly about their pain. >> it's not what we hoped, obviously. the family would like to say that there is nothing at this point that can bring tony back to us. the most question hope for is answers. >> reporter: as a family waits to get answers, traffic into the residence dorms on the niu campus is being controlled by 24 hour access cards. police with high visibility on campus trying to make the students here feel safe. classes are in session today despite the weekend's troubling news. police say they found the body in the nearby forest where antoinette tony keller had gone with her sketch book.

although investigators have not publicly identified the body, police revealing that several items were found in the same vicinity. items that may have belonged to the 18-year-old freshman from plainfield. relatives have been notified of the discovery. revolution sends a shock wave through the community still recovering from the bloody campus shooting of 2008 that left six people dead. and given the circumstances with the specter of yet another tragedy and possibility of sakiller still at large, students say they are taking precautions. >> i seen a lot of females pair up even during the day. that's a lot of reason going on. >> reporter: a lot of heavy hearts here in de kalb. with so many chicago area students here on the niu campus understandably an awful lot of parents just worried about their kids safety. we can tell you from our standpoint what we are able to

see here that there has been a considerable police presence around the campus. in the residence halls themselves. around the residence halls. security escorts available here on campus. a lot of students taking precautions. female students walking in pairs. arguably from what we are able to see this could be perhaps the safest place you could possibly be in de kalb. on the niu campus, julian crews, wgn news. safe but still a campus on edge. thank you. a rookie chicago police officer who was hit by a car on the stevenson last week remains in critical condition today. 28-year-old daniel vasquez is suffering from brain injuries. he was helping a motorist who crashed his car when a passing car hit him friday near south damon avenue. the driver who was struck him was ticketed for not having a license and failure to reduce speed. vasquez earned his police star last week. he has three children. the band that -- van that a disabled man uses to get around

has been stolen. last week randy got off the train at metra stop in park forest when he couldn't find his van. he suffers from a muscular disorder and needs a wheel chair to get around. his van is custom fitted for him and his wheel chair. now he has to ride that wheel chair two miles to the metra train so he can go to work. it's a dark blue '92 chevy van. it has an illinois disability plate with a number 132075. he says he is not worried about finding the thief. he just wants his van back. getting back to our top story, a triple murder in harvey. >> wgn's randy belesomo is live at the apartment complex. the seen of the -- scene of the crime and has the very latest. >> reporter: good afternoon. a victim's boyfriend is being held in connection with drugs found in the apartment. police won't say that boyfriend had anything to do with the

killing. his teenage son died last night in the shooting. that teenage son police say was a known gang member. not enrolled in school and just out of juvenile detention. >> they didn't deserve this. >> a shooting in the second floor harvey apartment has left three people dead. 28-year-old stovall. her nine-year-old daughter and 16 qleerld sha-- shaquille davis. davis is the son of stovall's boyfriend. they all lived here together along with the couple's four- year-old son. he was shot last night, too. >> the mother was a beautiful woman. salt of the earth. she was sweet. loving mother. >> the incident happened around 10:00 in the 300 block of 151 place. teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. emergency crews transported mother and daughter to engel's hospital where they died. the little boy is in stable condition at christ medical center in oak lawn. the boy's father had to carry the child out of the apartment himself. he was so upset he had to give

his son to his best friend. >> he had three gunshot wounds that i saw. he didn't seem like it was -- i don't want to say it wasn't life-threatening but he looked like he was going to make it. >> this is the second time in four months that such violent tragedy has occurred here. this man's girlfriend was murdered in front of the apartment complex in june. >> somebody shot her in the neck. put her body in a vacant building and put gasoline on her and burnt her up and burnt the apartment up. police found a large quantity of drugs in the home ask are currently holding the boyfriend in connection to those narcotics. they won't say if he has north- south do with the murders but the victims had to known their attacker. no sign of forced entry into the apartment. >> let me assure you that the harvey police department will be leave nothing stone unturned to find out what happened at this location and the

individuals that were involved. >> stovall's father is personally offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who killed his grand kids and daughter. a chase bank employee who recently returned to school to study management at columbia college. no one deserves to -- shot the way they were. under no circumstances. i don't care what it was about. >> police say they do not believe residents here are in any danger. they set up crisis intervention programs for officers who may have been affectedded as well as students enrolled in the younger victim's schools. i'm live in harvey, randy belesomo, wgn news. the city's inspector general has released report on cost cutting options that could help solve chicago's financial problems. the budget options report lists 24 possible places to decrease spending and increase revenue. on that list, eliminating subsidized water and sewage

usage for nonprofit organizations. it also includes reducing staff on fire engines and trucks and eliminating the traffic control aides in the loop. in all, the options total about $244 million. but none of the options has been recommended at this point. election day just eight days away. newest wgn "chicago tribune" poll shows republican mark kirk holding a slight lead over democrat aleksei giannoulias in the u.s. senate race. 44% of those questions say they support kirk compared with 41% who support giannoulias. in a contest where trust has been a central campaign theme on both sides, 36% of voters now say they now feel kirk is more honest and trust worthy as compared to 31% for giannoulias. and independent voters and suburban voters are moving toward kirk. but this race could go right down to the wire. kirk's lead over giannoulias falls within the polls 3.7%

margin of error and 7% of voters are still undecided. governor quinn isn't taking any blame for what fellow democrat said about his opponent, bill brady. >> i never served with such an idiotic, racist, sexist, homophobic person in my life! >> state senator ricky henden said that at a rally for quinn on saturday. quinn and brady then appeared on stage together at salem baptist church the next morning. afterwards off camera brady said quinn's campaign has stooped to an embarrassing level. quinn didn't condone henden's comments but stopped short of apologizing for them. >> i thought the comment were inappropriate. i said so immediately when asked. i don't in anyway endorse those comments. i think i said then and i will say today, i always been a civil person -- >> henden told the "chicago tribune" the only thing he

of uncontrollable hiccups is now charged with murder. we first heard about 19-year- old jennifer mei of st. petersburg three years ago. she had the hiccups for six weeks. now jennifer mei and two other suspects are accused in taking part in a robbery that ended in the shooting death of a 22-year- old man. a canadian man has pled guilty in an attack in afghanistan that killed an american soldier in 2002. omar faces five charges including murder in guantanamo bay, cuba. he was 15 years old when he threw a grenade during a raid on al qaeda. this plea agreement avoids a war crimes trial where he faced life behind bars. he was born in toronto under the agreement he could return to canada after serving the first year of his sentence. the sentence hearing is expected to take a few days. president obama is making a final campaign push for fellow democrats in a last ditch

night. this is courtney done hoe, bloomberg news. some strong signs for the housing market. sales of exiting homes riedzing in september by the most on record sales increasing 10% to about 4 1/2 million. and this can mean the cheaper mortgages are helping stabilize the industry that's been hit hard with foreclosures and joblessness. lowest mortgage rates on record and cheaper homes are enticing some buyers but the housing recovery can be slowed by unemployment forecast. 69% through 2011. meantime some comments this morning from fed chairman ben bernanke on the mortgage problem and the banks are closing on homes. bernanke saying federal regulators are looking at whether mortgage companies cut corners on their own procedures when they use to close on people's homes. and fed looking at potential impact of the foreclosure debacle on financial institutions. gmac, jp morgan and banc of america are among the loan services that temporarily halted foreclosures while they

taxes 67%. we have to balance the budget. everyone in state government to cut 10 cents of state spending and prioritizing the remaining 90 cents. i need an audit. even governor quinn in last week's debate refused to answer a question how he spent 13% of the discretionary spending given to him. we need to see what the real facts are and the secret deals pat quinn has put in place. this is just a continuation of rod blagojevich, pat quinn's followed suit with his partner and we don't know the truth what's going on in state government. >> whittled down the deficit? >> we have a structural deficit we estimate about $5 billion. we spend about $57 billion. so yeah, families and businesses have had to make the tough choices to do that. but that's what we have to do. under pat quinn's plan we had human service agencies going out of business and firing people because he is overpromised and underdelivered. i believe if we balance our budget we deliver on what -- and people can expect it we can

but have we got some changes on the way. there is a power house storm is that going to cover the whole central part of the country and central canada with -- it can only be described as mammoth. product of 220-mile-per-hour jet stream. that is coming off the pacific and going to rip into the atmosphere and set up all kind of vertical motions as we look at the partly sunny skies and another day of unseasonal september level temperatures here in the chicago area. we have weather bug cameras that show us the snow in some parts of the country. there will be snow in the upper mid west with us. but for us, diving temperatures later in the week but a howling wind with powerful thunderstorms late tonight. the potential for a squall line and severe weather and then nonthunderstorm winds that will rake the area up to 50-mile-per- hour or higher at times tomorrow, tomorrow night and into wednesday. we have a high wind watch out for the chicago area. a storm watch out where lake michigan and we have wild

weather on the way. i guess maybe we are about to pay for this unseasonal warm that we have seen around the area. we had 70s yesterday. it's already above 70 at kankakee. at de kalb, we in theca and joliet. note the winds just starting to pick up. but this is nothing. this is the calm before the storm. the winds will start to howl from the south tonight. and then we will shift westerlily tomorrow and really blow around the storm that could have a sample barometric pressure lower than the storm that produced the sinking back in 1975. equivalent to a category 3 hurricane. up on the canadian border. we may saturday record low pressure here in chicago. it's 70 at chicago's o'hare now with the southwest wind picking up. 67 at midway airport. 7. at kankakee and 67 at hammond. and some views out west this weather system that is bringing rains and clouds as you can see to las vegas. these are a couple of cameras

out there. look at the snow flurries coming down in livingston, montana. sticking snow in the upper mid west out of this storm for the first time this season. and here is the view from colorado springs. at the front range of the rockies being shrouded in clouds which are snowing at higher elevations as we come to you at this hour. we are in a little hole in the clouds and so we had a fair amount of sun. as you stand back and look at this gush of moisture and winds accompanying them that moisture. into the western u.s. and then ultimately the plains. gulf moisture running north and producing these clouds that may grow severe and march eastward on the squall line and see the jet stream. the area that had scatterd clouds -- that's one low pressure. up there with this little curl of winds up there. winds are at 220 miles per hour. that's going race across the pacific, plow into the eastern u.s. and then kind of wrap its

way into the mid west. that sets up a big low pressure and these are all wind advisories. high wind watches and storm warnings with winter storm warnings out in the rockies for this. this is a big deal. there is our high wind watch for the chicago area. so it's going to get windy and here is the jet stream. see what this thing does is the winds blow here and air exits air from below up. that drops barometric pressure rush in to fill in for the air that's stucked up into this jet stream and then with time it turns northwest and so this thing will start tugging some very cool air. coolest air of the season into our area. we have unseasonably warm air here. reason the jet stream is that strong is because cold air is next to warm air and the bigger the temperatures spread, the stronger the winds. the temperatures spread on this one is extreme so we expect temperatures to bop around quite a bit. crashing later this week only to warm up again from all indcations this weekend for the

halloween weekend. so how about ta? we are timing these warm spells perfectly. but we may have a severe weather outbreak and some wind to deal with for a couple days before this takes place. partly sunny. turning increasingly windy this afternoon. but the main event in terms of winds is tonight and even more so tomorrow. tomorrow night and wednesday. high 74. the winds will be coming in from the south, southwest 11 to 23 is as the afternoon goes on. tonight clouding over and turning windy with 40-mile-per- hour wind gusts from the south later on and thunderstorms toward morning. low temperatures tonight. 55. winds will be increasing southwest 14 to 32 that should be. not 400 and 32. that would really be a story there. and then tomorrow strong winds as strong early morning thunderstorms and high winds rest of the day, partly cloudy, windy, gusts to 50 miles per hour or more are possible. high 69. south, southwest winds 20 to

>> one of my heroes for this ministry is fulton j sheen so catholics were the pioneers in use of radio and tv. then we dropped the ball and that always bothered me. i wanted to get the catholic voice out widely so we started a few years ago and we have been following that inspiration. >> father, i don't think i would be out of line that suggesting a thank a lot of folks are disillusioned because of the scandals in the u.s. and europe. are you going to address those issues? >> not directly on this show. i'm well aware of the problem. i have a ministry on youtube. we do commentaries so i hear comments every single day from people about the scandals 367 obviously we have problems. this is the worse problem in american catholic church hiss reesm church has to deal with it honestly and directly. at the same time i don't want the church to be reduced to the sex abuse scandal. we bear this great message of joy and salvation. obviously the church has to come to grips in the most honest way possible. >> are you satisfied with the way the church has dealt with

sters it's time for a lurng break and executive chef at pourteno, john is back with us today. and if you had been -- it's all about small plate family dining. italian style. welcome back. >> great to be here. >> great to have you. everything-- i see boiling water and pasta and it looks good already. >> we will make today a simple dish that used to be extremely fashionable in the 70s. it's called penne. typically regatta pasta used and you can see the ridges or ridges or the reason for that is the sauce adheres to the pasta. it's at preferred pasta to use. not to say you can't use a smooth pasta. >> what are you adding? >> cheese sauce. we will get the dish starts and add the penne directly into the

rome called daunte's. there is a lot of people claiming to have made this dish. now we will add a little bit of basil to that. and we can't have italian food without italian vodka. now we add the vodka. >> that's italian vodka. not russian. >> nope. not to say you shouldn't use russian vodka. >> we let this simmer and smell these flavors that are starting to mature. and then we take a little bit of puree pd tomatoes and led that simmer for a moment and then a -- and let that simmer for a moment. >> we can't have enough basil and now some ground pepper. >> what's that? >> that's cream that will go in at the end. italian cooking very little cream is used. you can see this cooking. a week from today we are having a promotion from -- a northeastern part of italy and we were fortunate enough to have the cheeses. there are two cow's milk
