what was behind the packages on the planes headed for chicago. tonight calls for firings and suspensions. this was a gruesome murder and we believe this was a crime of opportunity. >> police announce murder charges tonight in the case of a missing niu student. good evening. i'm micah materre. >> and i'm mark suppelsa. our top story on wgn tonight. julie unruh is live where charges were announced an hour ago in the missing student case. >> reporter: mark, they say it was random, it was isolated and the man they have in custody did act alone. this is what he's facing right now. five counts of first degree murder, one continue of arson as well as one of sexually

assault. his name is billy curl and he's 34 years old. he's a longtime resident of deb-- dekalb. this is the place where badly burned human remains were discovered october 16. police were led to him because he was in and out of that wooded park quite a bit. they tracked him to mexico. curl fled illinois on october 23 police say but came back to the states, louisiana to be specific. days later and was then taken into custody on tuesday night by u.s. marshals. the chief of police will not say exactly what happened to toni keller but curl and his victim did not know each other. he called it a crime of opportunity. investigators have no reason to believe, they say, that there are other victims that died at the hand of billy curl. >> they were in a secluded

area. we know that she had walked to the park. he was in the park and found her. >> one simply cannot imagine the anguish they have endured the past two weeks. the family has been an inspiration to everyone involved in this investigation through their support and quiet determination to see this investigation through to completion. >> reporter: now the president of niu just recently released a statement about this whole tragic incident saying in short toni was a victim of a senseless act of violence and we mourn her tragic death. today's news provides some comfort but does not bring her back to her family or niu. we want to mention billy curl is due in the courthouse tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

with more details about the crime will be revealed to the judge. bond set at $5 million. >> thank you. and shortly after those charges were announced, i spoke on the phone with a cousin of the victim. here's what she had to say. >> there is comfort brought by the fact that there was an arrest in the case. but the comfort's fairly well stopped at the point of arrest. it's bittersweet. as you get information it's helpful to be able to eliminate the uncertainty but the certainty is horrifying. >> and of course we will continue to follow this story. the latest tomorrow on the morning news at 6:00 a.m.. the hunt is on for the international terrorist who tried to send bombs to chicago aboard ups and fedex planes from yemen. >> two packages packed with explosives. the triggering plane searches

bound for the united states specifically two places of jewish worship in chicago. those packages had been located in dubai and east midlands airport. united kingdom >> reporter: and they did contain explosive material. one described as a toner cartridge with wires and circuits attached. at airports around the country particularly o'hare counterterrorism has been stepped up according to the department of homeland security. much of it the agency says travelers simply won't see. and most travelers refuse to give in to terrorism. >> you got to move around the country. >> there's always going to be some type of threat. but you can't let it stop you from living your life. >> reporter: what there is more of is awareness. and resignation. to the price of transportation security. >> being aware. and prepared to stand in longer lines.

packages intercepted in dubai an the uk were thought to be decoys. the picture changed dramatically by 3:00 this afternoon when the white house confirmed that both packages with chicago addresses were indeed working explosives. the fbi office said all churches synagogues and mosques in the chicago area should be vigilant for any unexpected packages especially those coming from overseas. for most congregations, services went on as schedule tonight. temple shalom rabbi saying not to cow cower. >> i can tell you we were not one of the intended recipients of the threats that are being reported by the media. >> reporter: there are 125 synagogues in chicago alone. intelligence officials say all of them need to remain vigilant

in tonight's medical watch: popular cholesterol medicine lipitor being recalled for the third time this year. drug maker pfizer is recalling 38,000 bottles of the lipitor due to complaints of unpleasant odors. they received a couple of complaints about a musty or moldy odor inside the bottles which are made from an outside company. triggered recalls by johnson & johnson earlier this year. new study linking childhood

attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with adult obesity. researchers at duke university report that greater number of adhd symptoms, the greater the obesity. study also looked at symptoms of inattention, body mass index. adhd was the most significant studied. the highly anticipated drug qnexa has been rejected. the diet pill stating concerns about the side effects. experts have been calling it the next promising weight loss drug in more than a tend. they want more information on the risks before approved it. drug maker says they plan to respond to the fda concerns within six weeks. still ahead: will trick or treaters get a treat from the weather department? tom skilling's forecast is next.

tomorrow looks kind of nice. it's going to warm up a bit. we're blowing west-southwest wind that'll strengthen during the night and gust up to 30 miles an hour at times off a pool of air that warmed into the 70s in nebraska today. see these clouds? we'll track them on the satellite. these have origins off the pacific and have ridding across america. look at the sun dog there. you get a prism like array of colors. it's amazing the number of calls about that today was the second day in a row that we didn't break above 50. 60% of years have such a day by this time in the season. it's not unusual. after that warm autumn, this is the 50th warmest autumn of the last 140 years. it follows a morning where we had the coolest temperatures since last april.

mid-20s sugar grove. kankakee. these are the lows across the area. a little nippy. won't be nearly as cool tonight because of the winds blowing and we have those high clouds acting like a blanket. winds are south at 9:00. 45 at midway. 44 this hour at geneva. in the 30s at lansing. there's the view from dekalb county today. beautiful day albeit on the cool side. you can see from the satellite, gorgeous weather. see these high clouds? they come up over a ridge and right into our area. these are little ice crystals and there's a dome of warm air here. look at the rain over the next two days. the next two weeks we'll see only 30% of our normal rainfall

continuing a very dry trend. we've seen so far this month. and with high pressure to the east of us, the one that brought us the cool air this morning, low pressure to the west. there'll be a good gradient. we'll be back into the winds tomorrow. then the cool high pressure is to settle southward and this is the change from reasoning last night. this thing apparently is going to be stronger than we thought. and while it may send a wind down the lake that can conceivably blow up a rain shower off the lake it wouldn't be a big deal. there's the temperatures across the area tonight. look at the warmth to the west. blows from kansas to the chicago area. will not quite make it to the 70s we saw there. if we really got going tomorrow we could get mid-60s before that lobe of air drops in for a stay sunday. next week looks cool though there's a sign of a warm up

coming in. we're not done with the warm weather yet. it's 42 here tomorrow. 54 at des moines and 56 in omaha. we have some windchills in the 30s. look at the temperature increases out west. these are double digit increases. this is a serious lope of warm air. be nice if it moved in and parked over us. we might have low 70s sunday if that works out like last sunday. but that's not going to happen. we'll be in the low 50s by sunday. look how much of the low dew points. that's why there's low storm action. winds are south at 9 and picking up. water temperature at 56. we've got a good dozen states under frost and freeze advisories as close by as down state ohio and indiana. but not for us tonight. these packed isobars represent a southwest wind flow or set it up.

and then you see the filaments that will filter tomorrow. but an awfully nice day. here's the jet stream turning westerly. but this lobe here -- see how these jets come together over us? you have one from canada and from the west. us sinks, dries, and you get high pressure to develop. that's the setup sunday that will prevent us from getting into any serious rain. here is the big story going on. this thing sprung to life quickly today. this is tropical storm soon to be hurricane thomas. and they've put out a special advisory. that thing is strengthing so strongly. we'll show you the track on this. it's supposed to be over the warmest and deep warm water there. the national hurricane center is predicted a major hurricane developing in the next four or five days and it might be a

organized to 60 mile-per-hour winds. they're liking to issue hurricane warnings for the track. that track is a five drink track an average of a whole group of models. but it takes it over the highest heat content waters of caribbean. where you want a big storm in three or four days. the warm up for us tomorrow will be short lived. we'll have readings about 20 degrees cooler from last week. that is reinforced there by another shot that comes down the length of the lake and could set up lake effect rain or sprinkles on thursday. but next weekend, see the warmth that comes back in the area? and indeed, we have an average of seven additional 60-degree days and two additional 70- degree days. a couple years have even had
