12:01 pm
voters here in the city. but republican mark kirk likes his chances. kirk's people say they moved ahead in the race. most recent poll shows the congressman has a three to four point edge. traditional strong holds like chicago's collar counties and downstate illinois are expected to turn out for the gop. it could very well boil down to independent voters deciding who will sit in barack obama's old senate seat. >> i think there is a growing wave of independents that want thoughtful independent leadership. and someone who won't rubber stamp everything that nancy pelosi wants to do. >> reporter: but aleksei giannoulias hopes those independents will go democrat. he spent the morning shaking hands at union station hoping to win over any late undecides.

have the independent vote but he is depending on a big democratic turnout. yesterday he worked to fire up the base in greektown traveling north to lincoln park hoping that he could summoned up enough excitement to pull out a come from behind victory. this is about turnout. we saw polls that had us up a points. at the end of date if you don't come out you could be up ten points. this is all about turnout. voters have the last word and anybody who thinks they have this won is usually in for a rude surprise. >> of course the democratic senator with a vested interest in aleksei giannoulias, durbin and other democratic leaders hoping to keep control of the u.s. senate and to avert the embarrassment of barack obama's old seat falling into the hands of the gop. in downtown chicago, julian crews, wgn news. and here is a look at the balance of power in the u.s.

senate right now. the democrats hold a 57 seat majority with two inbound- points that generally vote with the dralts. republicans need to pick up ten seats to take control. and in the house right now democrats have 255 votes compared to a 178 for republicans. so republicans need to add 39 seats to take the majority. poll trends show they could pick up more than that. about 45. across the state a record 37 governor -- across the country 37 governor seats are up for grabs. illinois is one of them with democrat pat quinn and republican bill brady locked in a very tight race. nancy loo is live on the northwest side right now with the latest. >> reporter: hi, steve. we are about at the halfway point of voting hours today. both major party candidates in the race for governor are expressing confidence. governor quinn cast his votes here just over an hour ago. joined by his two grown sons,
12:04 pm
governor quinn was upbeat heading into his usual polling place at galewood community church. he took the time to chat with a future voter and then set to work on the longest ballot in the history of chicago and cook county. >> obviously voting for governor was a high honor to vote for myself for governor and as they said a moment ago i want to thank everyone who has voted for me. it's still time to vote. we have until 7:00 tonight to vote. >> republican challenger bill brady spent the morning at mass. he attended services at holy name cathedral with his wife. by late afternoon brady will have cast his vote downstate in his hometown of bloomington. >> elections are humbling and we want to say thanks to the people who supported us. we look forward to victory today and encourage everyone to get out the vote. and we look forward to the next few year for illinois as we provide leadership to move illinois forward. from here governor quinn headed to suburban river forest to take his 93-year-old mother

election officials telling us that in the six hours that the polls have been opened, voter turnout has been strong, steady and smooth. here is what voters are telling us. >> is there any problems at >> very smooth. quite a few people in there which is a good sign. hope it lasts all day. >> we were glad we aren't too good on that old system with the machines. i was glad they got rid of that. pull the hand on that, that was a pain in the butt. this isn't too bad. >> it's a typical election. judicial tension business is silly because most of the judges are running unopposed and then you vote to retain them or whatever and you don't recognize any of their names. everything else, it's fine. so that's just one some voters are telling us about their voting experiences this morning. polls opened at 6:00 a.m. and several of the 1218 polling places reported long lines this morning. a lot of folks voting before
12:07 pm
they went to work. no major problems had been reported. however, there were a few calls about people campaigning a little too close to polling places. also about half a dozen polling places opened a bit late. aside if that, it's been smooth sailing. >> so far the only problem we had is that a few precincts did not open on time. so we will have about six precincts that we will go to the court to ask them to stay open an hour later at the end ever the night. that's standard for suburban cook coingt. six didn't open on time. >> so those six precincts are niles 29 and lincolnwood. northfield 25 in glenview. northfield 66 also in glenview. proviso 95 and melrose park. proviso 53 in maywood and proviso 46 in western springs. those precincts will be open an

political analyst paul lisnek. a lot of last minute campaigning. you know, this -- cuz it make a difference? >> for some people it does. there are some people that get up in the morning and say i'm going to vote, i don't know what i'm going to do until i glet and then the last hand shake at train station -- you know something? that's what i'm going to do. lengses that are close and may turn on that. >> we have some close one. >> very close as soon as with all of this early voting, so many people have already cast their their vote. >> by the way, that's a great point. a lot of money is spent in the last weeks. people are complaining left and right every commercial is political. how many people have already voted, mailed in early voting? >> absentee. >> 50 million across the country. this is pretty significant. people's minds made up. >> let's go national for a minute and talk about president obama and the effect these losses will have on him. i mentioned earlier i heard
12:10 pm
jonathan alter say that obama has dawn poor job of getting out the message of his successes during his first couple of years in office. and that is hurting him. >> what are your thoughts? >> the president is one of the objectively -- one of the greatest communicators we had. whether you support him or don't. congress has passed health care and financial reform. there has been a lot of things done. i think early on in his presidency when he was showing up on every television known to humankind he got flak for that and he backed off. we didn't see him. coming in now is a bit too late and that's the concern. because the message against all these programs is very strong, very steady and very consistent. it's now the president who does send a positive message across most people have made their minds up about it. the jonathan may be right it's something he should have begun many months ago. >> didn't sell it. nationally we are looking at one of the most fascinating developments and the emergents of the tea party.
12:11 pm
>> what's going to be interesting to watch is that some the winners may win not just because they are a tea party person, christine o'donnell in delaware who is one of the classic tea party people, she should -- not expected she will win in delaware. but sharon engel will likely beat harry reid. not because the tea party is victorious. the dislike for harry reid is intense that's what they are left for, but then they have none of the above but you can't send that person to the senate. there is a shake up. by the way, democrats will be happier with tea partiers winning than they will be traditional republicans winning. because if you get this fringe person and several of them in the senate, they are republican, so the message goes what are the republicans doing. the republicans will make great strides tonight. plan to finish the job in 2012 but taking over the senate if they don't do that tonight and then the presidency. if you have five or six of these very ultraright wing people in there, you may send a message throughout the country that it's time to go back the

other way. >> assuming the democrats lose the house, i'm trying to look at the picture of the president and how he gets anything done going forward. and i can't help but think about harold washington in his second term and how he was completely shut down. >> here is what's interesting. and i know you mentioned the house but let's look at the senate. three senate seats take place immediately. a lot of people are saying after the tsunami thing, the president will be impacted in january. when the reality is, immediately. because illinois, west virginia and delaware all send senators there immediately because of the robert byrd vacancy and obama vacancy and joe biden vacancy. two of those three seats are anticipated to go republican. delaware will stay democrat and possible if kirk pulls it off it's a republican seat as does west virginia. the point is that means president obama's margin of 59 -- this is heightthetical goes
12:13 pm
