amazing. november is supposed to be a quiet month. >> we normally see 40% of our normal sun. we had 77% of it this month. >> it's gorgeous. go stand outside. >> it is beautiful. the one little change that's gone on is the southerly wind has a bit of an easterly component so it's slicing off the lake and it will cool lakeshore areas. so will speed up the ol' spread between north lakeshore communities where highs today will be around 60 or in the low 60s. and inland areas where low 70s are expected. but these are like early october level temperatures in early november. and this trend continues through the week. though there is a decided downturn in the next two weeks
12:32 pm
in temperatures and climatology tells us in the next month we will see measurable snow in the area. in fact, since 2000, the average day of the first flurries in chicago is november 5. it had been up to that point around october 31. so warmer temperatures have led to later arrival of snowflakes and you folks in the indiana and michigan snow belts have seen snow and we had some ice pellets elsewhere. no snow officially in the city. note the temperatures last night. it was warmer last night for a night time low at latin school here in schawg than the normal high this time of year. 52 was the low there. 50 is our normal high across the chicago area. 48 at chesterton. highland park at 47. oak lawn at 46 degrees. gorgeous day. we were well on our way to 70 degree readings in parts of the area. it's 65 officially at o'hare. see that wind coming in from the southeast? that will hold lakeshore temperatures down a bit. 65 at midway airport. buffalo grove at 72 right now.
12:33 pm
and at 70 degrees in blue island. so there is the warming you get away from the lake and nowhere are the winds terribly strong. in the next couple of days we have 3,000 miles of southerly winds from northern mexico up to the northern tip of hudson bay and canada blowing through the central part of the continent and those stronger winds will start shifting into chicago the next couple of day's gorgeous weather in sandwich as you can see. there look out west. this is utah. you can see snowflakes coming down. white snow covered mountains off in the distance. really wintry weather setting up in the western u.s. not here. we have enveesly situated before a storm that's produced 60 miles per hour winds and 90 foot seas and power outages in maine and new hampshire yesterday out to the east. and then here is the storm that's whitening the mountaintops of many western locations. this thing brought up to 17 inches of snow to the mountains east of fresno in california. and there are snows out in the
12:34 pm
vicinity of yellow stone park and glacier national park in montana as you can see in low elevation rains. but that weather system is going to take its good ol' time moving eastward and sets up the southerly winds out ahead of the weather system. while you have snow advisories and winter weather advisories in the mountains, wind advisories in western south dakota and a look at snows over the next two days. see elevations there are high. and that's why the rockies wind up with the first snows oftentimes or the appalachians out east of the season in the united states. we are at lower elevations therefore don't cool off as quickly and we have our snows little later. see this big trough? these jet streams form between cold air and warm air. so this plunge of cool air out west produces the big trough and the southerly winds that steer our weather will just through the end of the work week. it's after that this things begin to chain as we will show
12:35 pm
you in a moment. it's 6. in chicago. 70 at st. louis. 63 at omaha and then there is the colder air out to the west and really chilly stuff up in the north end of the continent. 54 at mark qt. 58 at rhinelander. these temperatures are uniformly extraordinary by november standards. it had been a cool month. we had a deficit going for the month overall. but this is our third day in this mild air mass and see how the winds are picking up to the west of us. that's what they are doing here. we were about two degrees warmer than we were 24 hours ago and see the juxtapositioning warmer than 24 hour ago here in the mid west and in the big temperature drops out west. that's why this jet stream is buckling here around this incursion of cold air that has temperatures more than 32- degrees colder in parts of wyoming than 24 hours ago. east winds at six. humidity just 39%. boy, you know, it's been amazing. not only sun but very dry.
12:36 pm
maybe note the itchy skin and so forth. haven't had a lot of moisture in the air. sunny today and the third day of unseasonably mile temperatures. this is like early october in early november. almost 20 degrees above normal. where it hits 70. high today of 68 at o'hare. low 70s inland. but low 60s right along the shoreline particularly in the north shore. winds will be southeast to south. 6 to 17. then tonight mainly clear. mild for the season. 40s inland. 50 at the lakeshore and 55 at o'hare. tomorrow mostly sunny and seasonally mild. 60 at the lake. low 70s inland. 69 should be the official thermometer reading at o'hare and 67 partly sunny, still mild on thursday. high temperature of 67 degrees. and we will come back and take you through the next ten days and you will see the big changes coming to colder weather. but, boy-- >> it's delightful.
