outbreak of cases has people concerned. let me show you why. this is a map that shows the different clusters where the stomach flu or the norovirus has popped up and as you can see it goes from the northwest part of the county towards the lake, west of the city and then south of the city of chicago. public health experts say in one particular outbreak the type of stomach flu or norovirus as it's known was similar to a type of flu that was seen on cruise ships. >> norovirus is a group of viruses that cause gi illness and they are best known for causing cruise ship outbreaks. >> now the director of the county's communeicable disease control division says it's a serious issue. outbreaks are normthal time of year, the doctor says the new spike is higher than normal and because it's concentrated in at least 26 schools in those numbers could go higher later today, there is concern,

the symptoms this virulent type of stomach flu. in oak park, julian crews, wgn news. a mail bomb recently removed to from a cargo plane in england could have exploded over the east coast. two bombs were placed inside printers then post marked for synagogues here in chicago. those packages were sent from yemen. authorities removed one of the package dprz a plane in england and another from dupe yie -- dubai. evidence shows it could have been activated over the east coast. a man accused of murdering a metra police officer is jailed without bond today. the victim, officer thomas cook, was shot and killed in september of 2006. he was sitting in his squad car out sad metra station in south suburban harvey. 23-year-old nickselson of harvey is charged. nicholson had a bond hearing this morning. prosecutors say nicholson shot cook because he wanted the officer's gun. nicholson is also charged with the attempted murder of a havre see police officer.

we will have a live report coming up later this hour. six years ago, the body of three-year-old riley fox was found in a creek near her home. and today, her family could get something they waited a long time for. >> guilty plea from the man accused of her rape and murder. muriel clair is live in joliet now with more. >> reporter: the hearing here at will county courthouse is still about 90 minutes away from happening. but we are told that scott eby is planning to plead guilty. 38-year-old eby, accused of raping and murdering three-year- old riley fox was charged in may after dna linked him to the crime. little riley disappeared from her wilmington home in june of 2004. her body was later found in a creek not far from her home. initially, authorities accused riley's father kevin fox of her murder. he spent eight months in jail

before dna evidence linked scott eby to the crime. a pair of tennis shoes with eby's name on them were found at the crime scene and when the dna surfaced, eby was already in prison serving time for an unrelated sex assault conviction. sources close to the case say that eby has give an videotaped confession and that there has been some plea bargaining in this case. we, of course, will learn more when the hearing unfolds. at the courthouse, muriel clair, wgn news. the delayed trial of michael the large guy sarno is underway this morning. he and two of his alleged crime partners are in chicago federal court for charges of racketeering. federal authorities accuse him of ordering the two other men to set off bombs at offices in berwyn. they have pleaded not guilty to blowing up the offices of the video poker gaming company. attorney claims his client has no mob ties but many consider

him to be the new face of organized crime in chicago. rahm emanuel is expected to become an official candidate for chicago mayor next week. he could be running against the man who is rentlinging -- renting his house. ron halpen is a businessman. when emanuel left his job as white house chief of staff, he asked halpen to move out but halpen said no and that got the attention of local republicans who visited halpen to talk about a possible mayoral run. halpen is not saying if he will run. he has until november 22 to submit 12,500 signatures to get on the ballot. city of chicago mayoral candidate gary chico introduces a citizen ordinance that will protect chicago's long-term parking meet and skyway reserve funds. >> city of chicago received $1.157 billion and today we can barely put a finger on anything that's left in that account. the money went to short term budget fixes and far greater

numbers than we were ever told. ladies and gentlemen, that is not responsible. >> reporter: chico's proposing places reserves of irrevocable trust overseen by a board. the proposal will require that reserves be iewpsed solely to generate interest to cover city costs. mayor daley budget proposal is approved next week, city will have spent all but $76 million of the parking meter lease money. another 500 million will remain from the city's 99 year lease of the skyway in 2004. the chicago public schools are projecting a $700 million deficit for next school year. that's because the state is behind on some of its payments to the school system. cps says the state still owes $164 million from last school year. and it's late on an additional 206 million for this school year. the chicago public schools faced a $1 billion deficit in

and the damage that was done. >> reporter: well, allison, investigators still on the scene here trying to figure out the cause of this morning's fire. mean time, lockport residents are soaking in the new scenes of devastation in their embattled downtown. >> there is nothing left to do but clean up and assess because there is not much left of four downtown businesses in the heart of lockport. the biggest loss, tom pierson's photo shop and irreplaceable stash of historical photos. >> there are a lot of the industrial areas and the city stroll with model ts in the streets and things. it's a lot of history, too. >> the fire along the 900 block of south state street broke out just before 2:00 this morning. nearly 100 firefighters responds to put it out before dawn. but not before flames torched the photo shop, a bowling alley and insurance company and a

affected. according to the centers for disease control, 59 million people had no health insurance foich -- for at least some part of the 12 month period. that is up 400,000 people from the year before. the number of uninsured americans between the ages of 18 and 64 has climbed an average of 1.1 million a year since 2006. and half of the overall increase is among people with family income twice or three times above the federal poverty level. stepping up to rescue a prominent but financially strapped chicago health clinic. last week officials with the howard brown health center made a public plea for half million dollars in donations to keep the clinic from shutting down. howard brown provides health services to people living with hiv and aids. donors responded by giving $90,000 in pledges and this week an anonymous donor said he will match donor -- pledges up to $100,000 until november 30. donor credits the clinic with treating his son and saving his

president obama international agenda moves to south korea where he is attaining the g20 summit. president is expected to find himself on the defensive today. other world lead doors not agree with the u.s. plan to boost the economy. the federal reserve is buying $600 billion in long term government bonds in an attempt to reduce interest rates and increase lending. some other nations are complaining this move will give american goods an unfair

advantage in the global market. president obama said creating jobs, income and spending is the most important contribution the united states could make to the global recovery. there are concerns that a cholera outbreak in haiti will grow worse. 600 people have already died. doctors and aid groups say the disease is now moving from small towns to the city of port- au-prince. they say they have seen more than 200 city residents with severe symptoms over the last few days. they are also rushing to set up treatment centers across the city. indonesia's volcano is sending more clouds of ash into the sky forcing international airlines to cancel flights. more than 190 deaths are blamed on the volcano continuous erupgs. mountain began erupting two weeks ago shooting clouds of gas and debris up to 3,000 feet in the air. thousands of people in the area have been forced to evacuate their homes because ash and lava are pouring down the

slopesle of the volcano. a news helicopter captured footage of a mysterious vapor trail off the southern california coast. defense department is trying to figure out whether or not the cloud was generated by a missile. the u.s. military does not appear to be the cause. as they would have released test warnings. spokesman for the pentagon says it could have come from a private company indications suggest that they -- the vapor trail did not come from a foreign military either. defense department will continue to examine the situation. spam and pop tarts are the menu today for passengers aboard this cruise ship. the carnival splendor. as it slowly makes its way back to shore. engine room fire knocked out the ship's power on monday leaving nearly 4500 passengers and crew without hot water, air conditioning, hot food, phone or internet service. the u.s. navy is supplying provisions for the ship and tugboats are towing the vessel back to shore very slowly. expected to arrive in san diego

sometime tomorrow night. i don't suggest you do it but you can't be fired. you cannot be fired for posting disparaging remarks about your boss on facebook. that's the ruling from the national labor relations board. back in december, an ambulance service company in connecticut, american medical response, fired a union employee after she posted unflattering and vulgar comments about her supervisor. but the nlrb says her speech was protected saying it was her page and she did it on her own time at her own home. however, american medical response of connecticut says the employee was fired because of complaints about her work. the issue undergo another hearing in january. i'm angie lau live at the cme group in chicago. good news from the jobs front. we are seeing signs of healing today. labor department reporting this morning that the number of americans filing for jobless claims for the first time fell to the lowest level in four

months. now fewer firings are the first step in the improvement of labor market followed by faster job and income growth that can fuel gains in consumer spending which will be good for the economy. meanwhile, if you do have a job at mountainview based google, 2011 may be a very good year. street journal" the company plans to give 10% raises to all of google's 23,000 workers around the globe. affective in january. fear not, even if you don't work for google you could be in for a railz. according to career builder survey, one-third of employers are willing to negotiate salary increases for its current workers. 43% of employers surveyed say they are concerned that their top talent may leave their organizations when the economy improves if they don't give out raises. lastly, with thanksgiving travel coming up let's hope there aren't any delays.

on the medical watch today, new study on the risk of obese teens carrying the extra weight into adulthood. researchers followed more than 8,000 teens for 13 years. they found that obese teens are 16 times mover likely -- more likely to become severe obese adults than teens of normal weight. someone severely obese is 14u7b pounds or more above their ideal body weight. researchers hope the finding will help motivate overweight teenagers to make some healthy life changes. a massive study of american children's health is getting underway and starting in the chicago area.

so we are nudging up against a record high temperatures in record high is 71 for this date. wind off the lake to keep that from happening, inland areas could get into that territory today which continues this extraordinary but probably last -- >> yeah. it's probably the last warm spell of this length or this intensity of the season. we have much cooler weather starting this weekend and even colder next week. so an end of this is in sight but a couple more days to run. and these little cirrus stratus

clouds are filtering the sun. we had some haze in the area so folks are asking about that. part of that is just dust. you know, we had the dryest last 47 days. that's the period since september 25. we only had 95bush .95 of an inch of rain in that period. dryest in half a century around here. tomorrow is veterans day and could be the warmest veterans day in 46 years since back in 1964. so we have excitement on all fronts around here. unusual weather. note the wind gusts that are blowing in this area and many of these are coming in from the south, southeast so they are slicing in off the lake and that's cooling immediate lakeshore areas. 60s in lom bshed, geneva, decaf and alsip at this hour. here it's 65 degrees. midway at 66. it's 58 at highland park reflecting some of that lake cooling. and we have temperatures at 50 at kenosha.

at evergreen park in kankakee have pressed up against and even surpassed 70-degree mark in some locations. and here is a plot of those temperatures around the metro area. the view out west of snow on the ground in utah, this is where the colder air is. it's pressing eastward across the country and headed this way. still a couple of days off. we have little filaments of high clouds in the air right now. but you will see the substantial weather system out to the west. this thing left 17 inches of snow in parts of wyoming and good accumulations in montana as well among other areas out to the west. and look at this big arc of clouds coming up toward alaska where they had a good snow earlier in the week. that will pump warm air up in that direction and dislodge more cool air to spill into the western end of the continent and set the precedent for us to cool off. see the demarcation right here? between our unseasonal early october level warmth and the more seasonal air that's pouring into the west and has

been whitening mountaintops up there for several days. and there is even more cold air in reserve. this is going to start impacting the lower 48 as it spills southward out of canada. 62 in chicago. milwaukee and green bay both the result of southeasterly winds as a result of that having temperatures lower. and you will see we are getting gusty winds out to the west of us, too. where we were yesterday, no change here but sea the cooling out west? and the jet stream is responding by moving around the perimeter of that incoming cool air, that keeps winds blowing from the south here for the moment. keeps us warm. but as that whole air mass shifts eastward, a much cooler weekend on the way. our concern is that we may get some rain although we actually need some of that. we just know there are a lot of outdoor plans on saturday. south winds at 10. humidity at 43%. dew points is 42 and water is at 49. here you see what happens when cold air plunges into the

country steering winds buckle around it and you get a trough to develop and for the moment it has us in the southwest wind flow. but you will notice how a wave comes at us late friday and saturday. and that according to various models will start producing a couple of showers. few of them well ahead of that weather system could be in tomorrow and even a few may dot the area on friday. but it's friday night and even more so saturday that we seem to have a wharf developing and will come up here and wet us down in some areas. that wave is producing snows out west. those white areas are the areas under weather advisories for snowfall. and here is our rpm model snow forecast. showing what the effect of that cool weather is. just figure cool air dumping in here. here is our front. keeps winds blowing southerly and with gusto today and tonight and tomorrow. then this front comes in to the area with a lot of clouds tomorrow. tomorrow will be a cloudier day than many we seen recently. we got an extraordinarily sunny

november going. and our frankly are overdue for some cloud cover based on climatetology here. it looks like it's coming in. cooler air than comes in for the weekend. today the fourth unseasonably mild day. hazy, partly sunny. temperatures away from the lake more than 20 degrees above normal. those southeast winds will come off the lake. high temperatures coming in at 67 at o'hare but mid-70s inland. low 60s at the lakeshore line. tonight increasing cloudiness. hazy and mild. low 48. southeast of south, southwest winds 7 to 18 with gusts. and tomorrow a cloudy day. still, we will manage the warmest veterans day in 46 years around here. it was 74 degrees on veterans day in 1964. that's the last time we were warmer. tomorrow will hit 64. and may hit 70 in some spots away from the water. and then on friday, mostly cloudy. winds will blow off the lake over the northern half of the chicago area. that cools things down. leads to a big north-south temperature spread and we think

train station. and today the man accused of killing officer thomas cook is facing murder charges. robert jordan is outside the riverdale police station. >> reporter: that's right. he and his can accomplice have been in jail for about four years. nonetheless, they have been building a case slowly against the two suspects and states attorney anita alvarez said today the reason it took so long is because they wanted to be very careful to make sure that this was done effectively and thoroughly so that they can take two bad guys off the streets. >> in court today, we allege that nicholson and accomplice jeremy lloyd planned to carry out this brutal cold blooded murder of officer cook on the evening of september 27, 2006. with the specific intent of stealing the officer's service weapon. >> on behalf of the family of thomas cook, i would like to thank the states attorney, the task force for making sure this

day would come for us. and know that we never gave up on them. and we were very thankful that they were able to come no this end for us. thank you. >> reporter: that was pam cook, officer cook's wife. states attorney alvarez was joined by members of the south suburban major crimes task force as well as other law enforcement members of the riverdale police department where officer cook had worked as a police officer prior to joining the metra police department. states attorney alvarez says that according to prosecutors, officer cook was slain as he sat in his marked squad car while working a security detail at the metra police department monitoring the safety of passengers as they exited the 147th street metra train station. alvarez says that few crimestary at the fabric of our community like the murder of a police officer. back live now. officer cook had worked for

about three years as a metra officer. and he worked prior to that for about ten years here at riverdale police department but changed jobs thinking that it would be safer working for the railroad. ironically that's where he was killed. in riverdale, robert jordan, wgn news. for newly re-elected chicago congressman paid their wife $00s of thousands of dollars for campaign work. the "chicago tribune" found jesse jackson, jr., paid his wife sandy more than $300,000. bobby rush's wife carolyn got $240,000. the wives of congressman danny davis and luis gutierrez received smaller amounts. now is it legal for lawmakers relatives to be paid by political committees. but campaign watch dog groups say the practice has the potential to be abused. congress woman melissa bean has gotten a few more votes as rules continue to be counted but still trailing republican joe walsh.

latest absentee ballot count gave bean three extra votes. walshs lead is 347. walsh was up by more than 500 votes when he declared victory shortly after the election. all absentee ballots in cook, lake and mchenry counties will not be counted until tuesday. walsh plans to go to washington on sunday for orientation for new congressmen. new vision for navy pier is being unveiled today. urban land institute is releasing a series of suggestions to revamp the pier to make it more family friendly. ideas include a bigger ferris wheel and indoor skating rink, a concert venue and a hotel. the goal was to have improvements in place by the year 2016. the pier's 100 anniversary. researchers say fts pier gets revamped, the site could get a 50% tourism boost. >> maybe they can use more. lunch break is next. and he has his own tv show and numerous cookbooks. celebrity chef ming si shows us how to prepare a easy one dish
