12:34 pm
afternoon is out and we were getting radar returns to start the show up. give you a good look at those right now. some of these tower up to 34,000 feet. and while we have no lightning detected with these at the moment, won wonders if we might not electrify the clouds and get a couple cloud to ground strokes. here they are pressing in on the west suburban area now with even more showers to the west. bulk will travel to the west of us tonight and tomorrow. but we may be swiped by a couple of light showers and that wouldn't be all bad. we need a good dousing at this point with just an inch of rain that will last 48 days. that's the least we seen in over half a century in that period. we are in the 60s at the moment. we sit right on near the demarcation line between our warm air which is dominated for four days and much cooler almost wintry air which is moving into the plains states and changed rain to snow as far east as western nebraska. and really cool air taking shape up to the north. this will be spilling in and surges that will keep all of next week cool.
12:35 pm
we see no repeat of anything close to this string of 60s in the foreseeable future. i think this may be the last warm spell of this length of the season. 63 here, but 47 at dubuque and mason city in the 40s. double digit temperature drops going out to the west of us. but we were still in the southwest wind and staying mild here with a 54% humidity. now this is our model forecast. which shows you the clouds coming in and see every now and then that green splotch that represents a little sprinkle of rain? perhaps a brief shower. about 20 to 30% coverage on these. and interestingly what happens on saturday is tied into this huge gulf of alaska storm. cool air punching into the northwest part of the country. as that hands, here is the wind max and jet stream with it. it buckle -- it produces a trough and this at the surface leads to low pressure. so we will get a low to develop to the west of us. move up through the western mid west. and bring us some showers and thunderstorms that now look
12:36 pm
like they will extend into parts of saturday and saturday night. then as you can see on the ten day animation of air mass movement here is the cold air. up to saturday afternoon modestly cooler saturday. but sunday turns cooler and then monday is chilly. so is tuesday and wednesday with even colder air as evidenced by the white and purples there dropping south to the canadian border and a low but that will come in later next week and toward the weekend. we were up to saturday there and you can see those oranges and yellows in our area. we will get cool. there is a little inverted trough here. that's what you would call these -- this buckle jet -- or isobaric pattern. but we think a close low will develop and start lifting toward the mid west. that's on saturday and that's when -- why the showers and thunder showers may come into the area. this thing will track to the west of us so we could get a shot of warmer air on saturday that would prolong the warm spell beyond tomorrow. but then the cool air comes in and you can see it's heaviest rains will fall to the west of
12:37 pm
us but what's interesting is we might even get some snow into parts of iowa and minnesota. that's getting awfully close on saturday night and sunday. so very interesting pattern and one that looks far more autumnal up to this point. increasing cloudiness. mild today. temperatures over 20 degrees above normal in areas that hit 70. we think 68 at o'hare. way above the 50 that's normal this time of year and winds will shift northwest 5 to 16 miles per hour. later today. more cloudy than not. hazy, mild. a shower can't be ruled out in 20 or 30% of the area tonight. those may even start later this afternoon and they are coming in on the radar already. 51 tonight. tomorrow cloudy periods. cooler because of winds off the lake. those east winds will keep us at 60 at o'hare. range will be from 56 on the shoreline to 70 in the far southern suburbs that will retain the warmth another day. and may even on saturday, too. 58.
