land tonight. no power, backed up toilets, limited food choices. 4500 passengers and crews on the splendour endureed a three days at sea. on monday an engine fire broke out disabling the ship. >> it was a very loud vibration. it sounded like you were hitting ground, you know, if were you on a boat. >> the couple were on board, they have from geneva. their son has been watching to see when they would make it back on land. >> they said the toilets were not working i thought 4000 people that seems like that could go down hill fast. >> reporter: helicopters delivered food and spam. not your typical luxury cruise fare. >> you dependent know what were you getting until you bit into it. it was tuna, salmon, hot dogs.

>> the fisher family from blue island said the crew did a good job with the food. a hard part was being in the dark for hours at a time. >> i took my little ipod and i would lay in bed in the dark and listen to my music. >> reporter: at the time of the fire, the ship was south of san diego and 40 miles off shore. >> when i walked into the hallway, you could smell like electrical stuff burning. i don't know if you know that smell but it's not pleasant. you walk down the hall and seen all the smoke. >> reporter: the ship docked at 8:30 pacific time. it took six tugs to pull the liner into the port in san diego. many passengers say the crew did a good job and things were calm and orderly even though the three days were uncomfortable. the trip made her appreciate the smaller things in life. >> appreciate a good hot cup of

our veteran's day american flags out there. warmest veteran's day in 46 years. and there were even rainbows in the area today. peter and gretchen captured one this afternoon as we had a couple of showers go through the area, amazing stuff. you know, it has been so dry, lake michigan is down 13-inches from where it was a year ago. down 5-inches in the last month or so. that's equal to losing the 13 trillion-gallons they are treated as one lake. and they are gone as a result of the dry weather. here you see the clouds gathering that are raining on news parts of the area. look at the temperatures which, it greeted us today. 73-degree highs at gary and university park.

buffalo grove. temperatures were at or very close to 70 or the low 70s. we're going to have a northeast wind lock in on friday. warm a bit as a storm goes through the midwest. then we can have much colder air coming in on saturday, sunday a possibility of snow flurries by sunday morning in our area. 55 is the reading at o'hare. 5 # at midkey. there are the temperatures across the area. you can see a couple of these northeast winds are showing up. temperatures range from 48 at free port to 58 here in the city. and 58 at frankfort. and beautiful weather in the western suburbs today. but out in colorado, you can see the snow showers that are coming in as the colder air comes across the rockies and into the plains where it rained in kansas today. we have a bit of energy.

they are 18,000 feet in height. we show you a couple. they have been blossoming, as they move from time to time across the area, they do not last anywhere long a squall line has 39,000-foot tops from the panhandle into dive city. this a storm system that's going to lift out. another one forming that main one as prompted storm watches in the upper midwest. so things are starting to cook along the demarcation between warm air that saw st. louis and cooler air that took it to 58 and 45 and rapid city. 39 and some really cool air taking shape in the north end of the continent. it will send chilliness into the 48 and promises we will not again see four straight 60 plus days as we have for a while. you can see the chilly air. it is 22 in wyoming. 35 in minnesota.

32 in fargo. the cool air is waiting but it will not come here right away. we're down about 14 degrees in peoria from 24 hours ago. once the first shot comes through, you can see how they recover in the plains states, though that on saturday before the chill hits on saturday night and sunday into next week. north winds coming around at 6 now. humidity at 67%. here is what is going on. the arc of clouds, this is a cool plunge. as this dives into the country. it will spin off in new mexico and texas and turn northeast ward on the jet scream. see this here. it dives in here. you get low pressure. as it rounds the trough, up into the midwest will be the storm system that puts us on the storm side on saturday and cold side on saturday night, sunday. until that happens, lots of clouds, spotty showers. this model suggests they retreat north.

a northeast wind will be blowing. and predefer the clouds before -- and defer the clouds before. back to back 70s and to low 40s. that's in a matter of days. tough love the weather in the midwest. interesting. cloudty periods, hazing tonight. a shower or two. 20 to 30% of the area. lows tonight staying in the low 50s, clouds, a sprinkle or shower. then partly sunny. breezy. cooler in the afternoon. we may be optimistic tomorrow but a high cooler in 590s over the area but 50s south and southwest. partly cloudy. mild. 46 tomorrow night. and mixed sun early on saturday. gives way to late morning and afternoon shower clust they're may include a storm. that's a front sweeping across the area. a high around 61 and cooler saturday night. by sunday morning with gusty

front. after that happens they dive saturday and sunday. look at the rains to occur in the plains states. in the midwest some areas could see three inches of rain and they are watches in the areas. and wisconsin and minnesota. north of the twin cities and bay field, wisconsin. most of the rain tomorrow will be to the north and west of us but you cannot rule out a sprinkle. here is the storm. you will see as it moves north it will develop a snow area and backside that swirls through the upper and western midwest later in the weekend. there is the showing up right there. there are some early indications in northwest wisconsin and or eastern minnesota could wind up with six inches of snow and saturday into sunday. for us we look for a high of 61 tomorrow. cooler at the lake. warmer in the suburbs. a period of showers and storms
