people. >> this is chicago's very own wgn news at 9:00. >> i just know we gonna miss him. we gonna miss him so much. a family devastated by the loss of a child tonight, 3 years old, the victim of an apartment fire. in the englewood neighborhood, another fire, claiming the life of an elderly woman. a beloved woman. good evening, i'm micah materre. >> and i'm mark suppelsa. it's our top story, the three big fires in chicago and two deadly. we start with dan pompei who has more on the child who was killed, dan. >> reporter: the boy's name, deavian arnold, only three years old. his mother told me tonight he

was especially close with his grandmother who survived the fire. 3-year-old deavian arnold was home this afternoon when the fire started. firefighters say it began in the kitchen on the stove and quickly began to cabinets and ceilings. neighbors tried to call 911 and tried to get in the apartment after seeing the boy knocking on the window in the back bathroom. >> we couldn't kick that door open. it had a dead bolt on it or something because we couldn't get it open. saw him tapping on the windows. >> reporter: firefighters and ambulances were on the scenes within minutes. they immediately found the grandmother lying unconscious on the floor and then searched the rest of the apartment? they found the child in the bedroom behind the bed between the bed and the wall. >> reporter: deavian was rushed to the hospital but it was too

late. he was pronounced dead later in the afternoon. >> i just know we gonna miss him. we gonna miss him so much. >> reporter: family members gathered at the university of chicago hospitals where the boy's grandmother is being treated for smoke inhalation. the family had lived in the south side apartment the past year. the boy's mother sierra says deavian a death is especially difficult for her three other sons. >> he was a very upbeat, very happy child. i mean, that's all i can really say. he was a good kid, very smart. he was smarter than any 3-year-old i ever seen. >> reporter: tonight, the boy's grandmother, 70-year-old doris arnold is in serious but stable condition. family members say she's heavily sedated right now but expected to make a full recovery. firefighters say it appears there was no working smoke detector in the apartment at the time of the fire. mark and micah. >> thank you. and in chicago's west englewood neighborhood rs a fast

intense fire claims the life of a respected neighborhood woman. julie unruh joins us now from saint bernard hospital, julie. >> reporter: mark, the office of fire investigation believes that this fire was not suspicious but more likely electrical in nature. the flames were big and fast, so fast that a 72-year-old woman did not make ittot out alive. >> she was a phenomenal woman. >> reporter: this 1 1/2 story single family residence went up in flames. in an instant firefighters say they got the call at 1:30 this afternoon. it was called an unusually fierce intense fire, likely fueled by all the flammable furniture near the front door. >> the fire started in the front bedroom. >> reporter: a wife and mother of 5 adult children who was over the years like a mother to

everyone on the blocks. verna cannon has known her for decades. >> she's just a decent person, you know, she sat on her porch, she loved to knit, you know, she just a good person. >> ever since i known her, she always been a very sweet person, she cook, you can eat. you ain't got a shirt on your back, she give you one to put on there. >> reporter: and no one knows that better than fletcher's own daughter, deloris griffin, shocked by her passing. >> we been over here 35 years so my mom was like a mom to all of my neighbors, my mom raised us well, and she cared about us more than she cared about herself. >> reporter: delores and her mom were very close. they used to talk every day and oddly, delores says, the two women discussed the topic of death just last night. >> momma said, you know, delores, you're right, you won't have anyone after i'm gone. so i know my momma gone to

heaven right now. her soul, her spirit is gone to heaven. >> reporter: now, two others were inside the fletcher home this afternoon when those flames broke out. maddie's adult son, he escaped with very little injury. as for her husband, 71-year-old joe fletcher is being treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns. the fire department says he will be okay. >> all right, julie unruh from saint bernard hospital. neighbors rescued an elderly woman in a wheelchair from the west side home in square community today. the fire sent smoke billowing through a two flat this morning on west harrison. the man and his friend were on their way to work when they joined the frantic effort to get people out of that building. >> there was some more women in there and a guy couldn't carry this lady out so we kicked in all the doors, got three women out, one of them broke her arms and we got blood all over our

clothes, and we was just trying to save them, you know, trying to help them. >> that woman is in the hospital in serious condition tonight. no other injuries have been reported and the fire is under investigation. her family is outraged. a murdered eastern illinois student is going free and moving to paradise. she's shocked her ex-boyfriend justicin bolay has early released. he killed her in 1998 and out 12 years early. he will walk free on good behavior and plans to move to hawaii with his wife who he married while in prison, where he'll serve three years on patrol. in politics, they're running for real in chicago's race for mayor, hopefuls lining up at the starting gate today filing piles of petitions to get on the february ballot. gary chico already filing revivals and debates. >> they're getting out to take part in a chicago tradition

bright and early this morning. they have a week from today to get those petitions in with the early bird getting the birt chance of appearing first on the ballot come election day. it's the candidates' chance to start showing off, bringing in their stacks, displaying the kind of support they can drum up in chicago. >> this is good for the city of chicago. it bodes well for the future of the city of chicago and i'm excited about that. >> reporter: they only need 12,500 names to get on the ballot. miguel dubaya brought in 40,000. congressman danny davis, 50,000. >> they know that it's time to turn the corner. it's time for a new era, and we're going to be in there pitching to see if we can't hit a home run. >> reporter: also, with about 50,000 signatures, former school board president gary chico who brought along a promise of a positive campaign. >> we need safer streets, and i'm going to be a mayor that

animalmal >> you're watching wgn news at 9:00. >> o'hare airport modernization gets a boost for a new air traffic control tower. it will be the third tower in operation at the world's busiest airport and will be funded by the federal government. the facility will service the south side of the field. it's part of a $15 million modernization program. the new south runway is expected to be open in 2015, although there remains a funding shortfall of a few billion dollars despite today's announcement. people starting to prepare to travel for the thanksgiving holiday. federal government warning people to be aware of terrorism and other threats. tsa is announcing today it's expanding the if you see

heaviest ever. we could actually use a little bit of moisture and we'll have a couple of systems flirt with us the next few days, as we look for the sun emerging from the clouds, and you know we've lost some daylight and we'll lose about 60 minutes before the shortest day on december 21, the sun setting earlier. it pushed us up close to 50 degrees in many areas, buffalo grove and highland indiana made it into the 50s today and there were some wind gusts across the area but tonight it's 37 at o'hare, it's 48 at mid way airport. here are the temperatures across the area at the moment, and we're above freezing safely in many areas. the wind gusts have been around 20 miles per hour today, and that's added to the chilly. here's the view in nebraska and in minneapolis, st. paul where some of the record weekend snow

melted. that's the heaviest they've had ever. this is the biggest early season snow to fall in the twin cities since halloween 1991 storm so that's interesting. you can kind of see there is pieces of energy parading around this big trough in the atmosphere. here's one system that will cloud us over and may produce sprinkles or an ice pellet in some areas. and this one made its way across the mid-west wednesday and increasing clouds wednesday night and may be bringing us a little snow and rain sunday morning. there are winter storm and snow advisories out west and you can see the real estate being covered by snow. we have about 14.2% of the country, noah tells us, under snow right now. that's a little less than last year and the second to most snow

in the last eight years to cover the lower 48. the season is off and running and with the axis of the jet stream south of us, that keeps us on the cold side of things when the jet will come in from the west and kind of cut off the direct flow of arctic here for a little while. next week, the greenland trough develops, it's back again and could play a factor in routing cold air to the eastern part of the country and the midwest next week. see the jet stream and the dome running along will produce in alaska tonight and race southward into the united states and bring cool air in. you can see how these temperature bands buckle southward, and there is a reservoir of moderately cool air that we're dealing with and really cool air up to the north that we'll be dealing with as time goes on. it's 42 in chicago, 50 in st. louis, and 38 in seoux falls, south dakota.

this is from iowa to wisconsin to minnesota that was hit by the big weekend snow storm and it's been cool air over the snow pack but most of the country hasn't seen temperatures change that much today. winds are blowing south at 7, humidity, dew point 33. here's a picture of what's to happen. the white and purple areas are the coldest air and boy it's getting chilly. but we go into the blues, and that's moderately cool air. it will be seasonalably cool in the 50s. we'll go back to the upper 40s and low 50s over the weekend, and then this vast reservoir of cold air that's to fill up the earth space over canada will come in here with some authority next week, and it looks like we'll be very chilly come the middle and end of next week. that would be the thanksgiving period, and with a powerful jet running around the periphery of that, you always wonder about an impulse kicking up a storm and

we'll keep an eye on it as it's a big travel week next week. for tonight, the 44th mildest autumn of the past 141 years in progress across chicago, we expect seasonably chilly weather, lows in spots of 35 and winds are variable. after that they turn easterly with a partly sunny day for the most part. the clouds will grow increasingly cloudy in the afternoon and evening, especially in the southern sections. tomorrow night, considerable clouds and maybe a sprinkle or ice pellet, low temperatures in the 40s, and on wednesday, fairly cloudy. there could be some mixed sun, but it clouds over at night, and we'll have a high of 52 and see perhaps a snow or rain shower late wednesday night and thursday. yet no big storms but one of our models, we get raw snow fall estimates and we could get 2 to 3 inches of snow so we're to the

>> you are so crazy. >> nice read there. >> micah, you know that reminds me one of my neighbors in alaska had an 800 pound black bear come onto the porch outside and the cat went up to the screen door and was meowing through it to chase the bear away, and the bear went away. >> got to get me a cat. >> it's just how you approach it, i guess. we've got ourselves a cool night here, mark and micah. it's in the 30s in the cooler inland locations, 40s in many other areas. these are current temperatures, and finally, this is a temperature map that looks the season. it is really cold up to the north. and you can see the single digit and subzero temperatures showing up but these weather systems that are passing south of us captured most of the moisture to the south so we're left with these little sprinkly things like those showing up on the radar right there and they're expected to not affect much of the area at all and get another

>> just a few more hours, the bears have another game. >> coming right up. >> i got to tell you, i've got a foot on the band wagon the first time this year. >> i'd say so. obviously the vikings have some issues but they also have adrian peterson and brett farve and other weapons and the bears pretty much stuffed them yesterday in soldier field. one broken coverage and a couple of field goals and that was it. oddly enough, they never sacked brett farve but the bears front did about everything else. they stripped them here and did such a nice job on peterson that the vikings kind of gave up on the run and the vikings in the secondary controlled most everything else. farve was an absolute mess out there, some of it his own doing but most of the credit going to the bears' d. >> the guys have been playing outstanding ball throughout. whenever you play a team with a guy like brett farve and a
