investigation. simple but different, chicago's finest chefs show what might be on their thanksgiving day table. >> the small town of caldonia, illinois, a little bit smaller after a tornado strike. this is what's left in places tonight, and this is the reason. >> good evening, i'm micah materre. >> and i'm mark suppelsa. our top story seen around the country on wgn america, what could be the year's final days of warmth bring a fierce storm. all watches and warnings are canceled. dan pompei is in caldonnia tonight. >> reporter: this is a town of about 200 people, a lot of damage to report from this small town. this home behind me, one of several homes and businesses

damaged by this tornado. now, you can see here the main part of the house, pretty much intact right now. there's damage to the roof but the area to the right here, this is where the garage was, and fortunately, no one was home when this tornado hit. we're told that a couple of pets were home but even they were okay. there have been crews out here all night working on houses like this, trying to get everything cleaned up. the good news to report tonight, there are no serious injuries coming from this small town. now, as you mentioned before, a brave individual with a cam remarks able to capture this as it passed through, it was posted on youtube this afternoon. several tornadoes touched down m mchenry, but this one touching down in boone county, near rockford, a little northeast of rockford, knocking out power and causing serious damages to homes and businesses. again, this is an amateur video

posted on youtube. the tornado also knocked over a school bus. i believe we have a picture of this. this is about 3:00 this afternoon near arguile and harlem roads. the sky cam was over the scene here a short while ago. this is probably a couple hours ago, you can see just how much damage it caused throughout the town. as i mentioned, this is a town of about 200 people. we're going to go to -- i spoke with an individual who's lived here his whole life and again says the town is pretty shaken up, but they're just glad no one was seriously injured. >> it's a mess. everything that's been here is just destroyed, three or four houses on there are just completely destroyed. it's just a small town, but it tore it up. >> reporter: again, the good news to report, no serious injuries. there were six children who were

on that bus that was knocked over and a driver, and they were taken to nearby hospitals in rockford. but again they're all expected to be okay. this small town of about 200 people just east of rockford have a lot of cleaning up to do, mark and micah. >> dan pompei reporting. let's go to tom skilling where we're watching this system dissipate. it was a rough one, tom. >> we missed a record by 2 degrees. they broke a record in rockford, which is just west of where that tornado touched down. another area heavily damaged was union grove, wisconsin, and it looks like they may be in the same boat as caldonnia are. it's not exactly sure how many tornadoes were involved. national weather service teams will go out tomorrow. those seem to be the big ones. there were funnel clouds near camburn, (e) lburn and two miles west of the motorola plant in harburn today. the heaviest rain in the chicago area in 82 days with this

system, with 50-miles an hour plus winds, and lowell had pretty good gusts and rains were substantial. this is a plot of the rainfall across the metro area, and some of the totals include over 2 inches in burlington. downers grove had 170, hinz dale 166. we had one line go through this morning and another line develop this afternoon. that storm that went through caldonnia hit just around 3:00. spotters were on it the whole way watching the thing proceed. they reported it was a half a mile wide at some points, which would make it an extremely huge tornado and this is where the heavy rains have come down. we had flood warnings in effect there, the tornadoes are little red triangles right there. the watches are done, and wintery weather to the west of us. there's a new storm developing and this will have an impact on the midwest later in the week and we'll tell you about that and the crash in temperatures that will follow all of this is

coming up as well. >> a lot of activity, tom skilling, thank you. a federal judge will rule soon, possibly days, on a bid to free the imprisoned former governor george ryan. lugging oxygen, his wife laura lynn says he's ailing, after a two hour hearing in court, the legal team moved to the honest services law. the 76-year-old ryan served almost half of his six year sentence for public corruption. they want him freed as an act of humanity pending retrial citing his wife's health. >> i'm just looking forward to getting george home to spend a few years with me that we have left. >> ryan's lawyers say his wife may only have months to live. right now he's not due to be released until 2013. cook county commissioner tony parika in court on the wrong side of the law. he was claimed to have been seen destroying a campaign sign.

he was arrested three days before the november 2 election. he said he was smashing the n2 election. he said he was smashing the sign like a 14-year-old boy. parika denied it calling the case a frame-up causing him the election. he's due in court february 9. it took awhile, months actually, to prior out of cook county a record of how it spent millions of homeland security aid for recent flood victims. as our wgn investigation shows tonight, what we were given today raises more questions than answers. >> reporter: it was an all expense paid party at the brook field zoo. 2,000 rsvp for free admission, parking, gifts and fun for flood victim families. >> every penny spent is covered, not by county dollars. >> reporter: questions of how much, wgn investigation found it cannot be answered by cook

county officials. months after we requested documentation of how the $10.3 million in homeland security flood aid was spent, we got this today, a haphazard stack of files, some missing, some with partial answers and much unanswered. what we did find was a lot of money not going to flood victims. $5500 for a lease for a chevy suburban. here's a check for the $1300 in charge of the flood program to park, thousands in cell phone bills for workers, $26 an hour for the brother-in-law of cook county homeland security chief david ra mos. when it was learned rams on got his relative that job, he was suspended by the county for ethics violation. they say the money was helping 300 homes that were flooded. if there were 300 homes helped, why were more than 2,000 people invited to the zoo party. not sure. the documents provided doesn't explain that, nor how much was

>> this was the last day for candidates for mayor to file their paper and is get on the ballot for the february 22nd election. lots of candidates and a few surprises. wgn's tom negovan is back tonight from the chicago board of elections, hey tom. >> turns out we haven't heard the last of senator birth over the challenge of emanuel whether he's eligible to run for mayor of chicago. >> i don't know rom, i don't have any dispute with rom.

i don't have any issues with rom. >> reporter: but he is running against rom emanuel in the race for mayor. rob halpin, the former white house chief of staff tenant, the guy who refused to break the lease on emanuel's home and refusing to say who's backing him for mayor, but he did file 20,000 signatures on his nominating petitions today. >> people approached me and they thought i would be a good mayor. there's no denying that some people met me as a result of living there but, you know, it's very coincidental. >> reporter: it's no coincidence that emanuel's tenant has so much in common with reverend and state senator james meeks whose campaign filed nominating petitions and is challenging emanuel's chicago residency. >> the question is was mr. emanuel a resident of the city of chicago one year prior to the election? that's the only issue in this case. >> reporter: so on this last

day to file, the mayoral race is a free for all. there's a campaign to draft outgoing illinois senator roland burris. those are his petitions. there's a political newcomer in real estate broker tommy hansen and the last of 18 to get his signatures in today, perennial candidate bill dockwalls. >> he said the last person on the ballot has the advantage because you have voters who have gone through and eliminated all the candidates. >> reporter: and on this final day handing in her paperwork, sandi jackson, but not for mayor. she's filing for alderman and city clerk. >> and we're going to weigh both seats and pray. >> reporter: did you weigh and pray about mayor pretty heavily as well? >> i did. i waited very heavily because it's a very serious post as you know. >> serious post all right and did i say 18 candidates for mayor? yeah, i did. that according to the unofficial list from the board of elections, this is it as of

mid-afternoon today. 13 names at that point out of date, now tack on five more as of the end of the day today. there will be challenges and, of course, drop outs but it's a long list. look for another major development in the mayor's list wednesday when we expect rom emanuel's residency to be challenged this time in a court of law. >> tom negovan thanks. all kinds of air travel concerns this thanksgiving, mainly dealing with the uproar over security procedures. the white house wants to strike a delicate business. spokesperson robert gibbs telling the tsa that those procedures will continue to evolve, using those words and went on to say the president's highest priority is that when anybody gets on a plane they feel reasonably sure they can travel safely. >> we put the utmost importance on protection and to do so in a way -- have that carried out in a way that it is the least inconvenient for those that travel.

>> more than 300 people are dead, hundreds injured after panic strikes at a festival in cambodia. happened on the last night of a three-day water festival as it's called in the country's capital. thousands of people were crossing a bridge when the size of the crowd caused people to panic, attempting to get off the bridge. stampede broke out, people were crushed, others fell into the water. one drink vendor said the chaos began when festival goers began passing out on the bridge causing others to panic.

the man accused of killing chandry levy have been found guilty of her murder today. after three days of deliberations, the jury convicted him on two counts of first degree murder. the 2001 case made headlines after he attacked levy in a park in washington. levy's disappearance exposed her affair with gary condit. he's facing a life sentence without patrol. 47 years today president john f. kennedy assassinated and now for the first time, secret service agents sworn to protect him are speaking out. former colleague clint hill wrote the forward for the book. both men say it's been tough to live with the fact that the president was killed on their watch. . >> i felt like we failed. we all had the same mission and it was a terrible feeling. >> seemed like every time i turned around, there was something that reminded me of what had happened, and so i just

clammed up and went in my basement with some alcohol and some cigarettes and stayed there for a few years. >> he admits in the book just hours after the assassination while guarding the home of vice president lyndon johnson, he raised his gun, almost fired at a man who approached him in the dark. the man turned out to be johnson. dr. margaret burrow has devoted her life to embracing art and cultural heritage in chicago. >> though he never had a chance to meet her, her many contributions at home, with the editorial cartoonist, scott standin. >> i cannot wait to get this stupid mustache off. tonight's rant is not about me, it's about honoring a very special person, dr. margaret burrows. we lost her this past sunday. she was a founder of the south side community art center and also the nationally recognized museum of african-american history which she and her husband started in her living room.

cold medicines for infants and toddlers were pulled from store shelves. emergency room visits for overdose and adverse reaction to cold medicine are down but the study of the journal of pediatrics find some parents still have cold medicine in their home. the most common er visit is for children who find and take cold medicine themselves and get sick. baby boomers are sick of sex. people between 45 and 65 were asked about their sex lives for an associated press poll. they complained about performance problems, menopaused, mix matched unhappiness. only 7% rated their sex life as satisfying. 25% said it was extremely unsatisfying. even seniors said they enjoyed their sex lives more than baby boomers. they say as people age they learn to communicate their sex needs.

temperatures which broke records all over the state, spring field, madison, wisconsin, lafayette, indiana, all broke records. you can't position arctic air with that coming in. you know tomorrow will be the coldest day of the fall. temperatures will be about 31 degrees colder tomorrow than today. it will be like switching from late summer to early winter inside just one day's time and, of course, powerful thunderstorms swept the area, 2% of our tornadoes in cook county have happened in november since 1955, and that shows you how rare these things are. you get a little blip sometimes in fall in tornado activity, and we had it today in caladonnia and union grove, wisconsin, among other places. there are the rains that have come into the area and left and now we're left with skies that will break from time to time tomorrow to let a little bit of sunshine through but the temps are diving. we're down to 46 with a west wind howling at 17, gusting to

31. it's 49 at mid way. record rainfalls today, 1.37 inches at o'hare, the biggest rain in 30 days around here and look at the wind gusts, that roared through naperville, laurel, indiana, and our weather bug network from burlington, wisconsin to the school in chicago and henzdale, other reports from western springs, sugar grove, west chester, we had funnel clouds and tornadoes mainly in our northwest suburbs but winds and reports of funnels in a couple of other areas as well, and you can see the temperatures tonight on the way down with readings as low as 36. these are all far west and west suburban temperatures, just to show you how far we've come from today's high around 70 earlier and note the wind gusts propelling the cool air in. here are the storms as they

moved into sock village today on our weather bug cameras. aurora had gusty storms going through and they turned the late afternoon skies to night as they came through the area and the storm that came through caladonnia is said to have snapped a half dozen of these high -- you know these towers that support the high power lines so there have been massive power outages. this is decatur, illinois, and look at olympia washington. it snowed in seattle, washington today. it's been snowing in the pacific northwest. here's livingston, monica schneider. look at the temperatures in the air mass that's coming in, from cut back to great falls, miels city, to montana. it's really an amazing change and we'll get another storm out of this before it's over. storm 1 lifted the area and brought storms through and the new line developed this afternoon. here's the next system taking shape out west. there's 17 states right now

under winter weather advisories to the west of us. the good news, the fear last week that this might ice us up appears to be passing to the north of us but there's the morning squall line coming through the area, noisy as it was, and here's the afternoon batch of thunderstorms, and we laid down enough rain to produce a little bit of flooding despite the recent dry weather, and there are the tornado reports. talked to the weather service in romeoville and they'll be dispatching a survey team tomorrow to check out how powerful that storm was. spotters that were watching it during its entire track across caladonnia and areas of mchenry county reported it was a half mile wide in places. that's an amazingly wide tornado. tornado watches down state and look at all these winter weather advisories, it's like winter has begun over about the northwestern third of the continent and now as we lay down successive bands of snow with these storms, that's the track

on which the arctic express runs. meantime, look atlas las. they have the most rain in november, because typically it snows this time of the year, and it's icing up as the rain falls. 55 in lansing, 41 in dekalb and 41 in rockford, and single digits in minnesota to the west, and of course a lot of winds propelling it our direction. these are wind chills in minnesota, down below 0. this air will leave its snow pack up there, and will travel over chicago. it's a far cry of today's 67. we warm modestly ahead of storm number 2 on wednesday and even into thanksgiving morning and then the temps dive again after that, and we've got a cold week ahead next week too as the greenland block comes in to play and starts punching these cool

>> i did indeed. it's amazing what you spin out of a november atmosphere when we warm up like we did today and put a power house jet stream ahead. clouds were about 30,000 feet tall when they come through the area and flying along at almost 50 miles an hour. tonight those winds are still flying along and tugging the cold air, it goes from 39 in chicago to 19, 9 at mason city and -7 at this hour at wind chill in south dakota so you get the feel for what's coming this way, a lot of blue and big temperature drops riding the winds at 20 to 25 miles an hour. lightning with vigor down state and look at the lightning with these storms. these are long gone from our area so we are through with these and it looks like we go cool from here. we said goodbye to the one storm
