stores for the early bird deal. we're live as people start getting ready for the black friday frenzy. several federal agencies on alert tonight after a radioactive package went missing from fedex. happy thanksgiving. i'm shawn lewis. >> i'm lourdes duarte. our top story seen around the country on wgn america: that missing package was being shipped to north dakota to tennessee. dan ponce joins us with more on the search >> reporter: wgn news was tipped off today by a fedex employee in the northwest suburbs. he said the fedex station where he looks is on the lookout for the missing package. a speaks person for fedex in tennessee confirmed the report. mean time the nrc has alerted

dozens of government agencies about the potential threat. the package went missing tuesday afternoon. it contains radioactive material called ge68 that is sealed in a protective container. as long as that container isn't opened or tampered with, there shouldn't be danger. because the package was shipped with fedex, the nrc says most likely it's not enough material to create a deadly weapon. but the nrc is taking the loss seriously. notifying many agencies about the package. the fbi, the epa, fema, and the department of homeland security. it was being shipped from fargo, north dakota, to knoxville, tennessee. the fedex spokesperson says it's likely somewhere in the south. the spokesperson could not confirm whether or not it has

bands balloons, all parts of the tradition. 325,000 spectators turned out for the mcdonald's thanksgiving day parade. we had a blast on our float waving to the crowds. best of all santa was in town. look at them there waving hello. and in manhattan the mother of all thanksgiving day parades followed a new route this year. after 82 years of parading down broadway, they followed is new route. tens of thousands lined the route for the annual event. kanye west, gladys knight were there. santa also closed out that parade. the first macy's parade was in 1924. president obama's message about celebrating our shared values and putting aside differences.

tonight the white house is warning governments around the world about another wikileaks revelation. they have posted war documents online. >> reporter: it's a website devoted to reforming governments by exposing their secrets. wikileaks is billing its next release as a doozy. it claims it will post 2.8 million secret documents. documents wiki claims will redefine global history. the leaks will include classified u.s. diplomatic cables. most come from this man. analyst private bradley manning. he says everywhere there's a u.s. posting, there's a diplomatic scandal that will be

the temperatures are dropping towards lows in the teens over most of the area by morning. this was after highs in the 40s at evergreen park and lincoln park. it's 23 with an 18 mile-per- hour west wind gusting to 27. if you're walking the dogs tonight, it's going to be cold. it's 19 in south elgin at this hour. and other temperatures including single digit windchills. moline's at 11 right now and there are the gusts around the area that are adding to this chill. this after a day of 60s down state. look at the rains. the heavens opened could be to the south of us. there was a second batch of rain that mixed with ice pellets today. look at the view out west though. in the west they set alltime

november record lows like 20 below in nevada. this is a utah shot right here. really cool air out west. that's where the core of the air is in the continent. we have a nice one coming in next week. turns our winds southerly after a chilly friday and saturday. but this cold air is going to kind of relocate over the eastern part of the country as we get into the second week of the forecast and prospects for snow start to rise. only 32 years in the last 125 have not had measurable snow at any of the official stations in the city up to this point. so we're in rare territory here. and it's about time we catch up on that. these are temperatures across the area. here's the way they look today in high temperature form. with st. louis and chicago in the upper 30s in the mid to upper 30s and the colder air

spilling into the country. up to the north ready to make a move on us after that early week warm-up that we see coming this way. when you factor in the winds that are blowing, the windchills are pretty chilly. these are windchill equivalent temperatures. below zero from marquette, michigan to minnesota and south dakota. double digit temperature declines. but right on the heels of this cooloff are big temperature increases. that's why we're confident that while it's going to be cold tonight and tomorrow and tomorrow night into saturday, it will warm up rather dramatically on sunday. we'll probably get mid-40s in the chicago area. even some thunder possibly rolling. the windchill equivalent temperature is down to 9 in chicago. and the last o the precipitation to effect our part of the country is now south of us.

falling last snow flakes in southern illinois and indiana tonight. look at current television and you'll get an idea of how the expanding snow pack -- there's almost 36% of the country covered with snow now. and the cold air is spilling off that snow pack. which is solid from the dakota to the arctic. that's the track on where the arctic express is running and the cool air is filtering into the area. while we were hit by those showers today, the skies are clearing out to the west of us 37 and the biggest rains are long gone. they fell on the southern midwest today. there are frost and freeze advisories from texas into the west. this is the area where there are all kinds of lows. went into the 40s this morning breaking a record in los angeles. there are warnings for lake effect snow downstream of lake michigan. but you see how the isobars

stay packed here. so the winds will be blowing around this pressure here. that's why they're blowing tonight and will blow tomorrow and tomorrow night. while they'll below again tomorrow, that will start pumping warmer air back into chicago. here's our forecast. tonight partly cloudy, blustery, much colder. expect to really bundle up by morning with temperatures down to 13 inland and upper teens in the city. west winds at 13-28 and gusty. tomorrow chilliest daytime temperature since february with a high of just 28. but winds gusting up to 35 miles an hour at times. mainly clear and breezy and cold 16 the low at o'hare. and we start the weekend cool with a 33-degree high. mostly sunny, breezy, and chilly. but readings should jump 10-20 degrees on sunday. you can go back and run again

snow's been limited. there won't be much in the next seven days. but you know week two, you snow lovers keep your eye on next weekend. that's what we'll be doing. we get estimates raw computer estimates on snowfall on a weekly basis. and one of the models has kicked out 3-8 inches in week number two through our area. so that usually signals there's something cooking there. there's smoke. we'll see if there's fire. we're back to the 40s then. could even see some thunderstorms late monday. but then the cold air pours in right there again. and you see that white blob diving into montana? that sets up the system that might have to be watched toward next weekend. we'll keep an eye on that. that thing would form in colorado and track eastward into our area. jet streams, when they pass south of you or develop south of you that's because the cold air is south of us.
