black friday deals to be had. good thing santa has helpers. >> i cooked my turkey dinner and brought it on a paper plate. >> reporter: bargain hunters also spend a long cold night in long lines before they were allowed in finally for the kill. it didn't take long before people emerged boasting over their bargains. >> bought a 46-inch t.v. ldc. >> this is 15 and 15 i think regular 30 so half off. >> reporter: best buy was amonday the targets of early bird shoppers since electronics remain a holiday favorite. >> biggest things were lap tops and televisions, ereaders. everyone is really shopping for everyone. >> reporter: many stores opened as early as 3:00 a.m. and they were jam packed within minutes. >> a lot of people was fighting

filed against rahm emanuel's candidacy for mayor. they believe election law is on their side in this case. even though rahm spent the last two years in washington as president obama's chief of staff his campaign says he still owned his house on the city's north side even though he is renting it out and still voted. he still has an illinois driver's licence and he always intended to come back to the city of chicago after he was done in washington. now, election law says you have to be a resident for one year before running for office in the city. that is the argument in these challenges that he was not here physically. we will keep on top of the situation here at 69 west washington live at the chicago board of elections, wgn news. >> thank you.

dehydrated and badly sun burned. they drifted from their home island after trying to navigate to a nearby island. the boys told their rescuers they survived on rain water, handful of coconuts, raw fish and sea gull that landed on their 12-foot aluminum boat. north korea carrying out its own military exercises today warning of another shower of dreadful fire. explosions could be heard on a south korean island that was heavily damaged in an attack by the north three days ago. four people were killed in tuesday's attack which the north called punishment for the military drills with the u.s. it claims those joint military exercises have brought the peninsula to the brink of war. south says it will still bid for the 2018 winter olympics. as of this morning the united states military has spent as much time in afghanistan as the soviet union did before it left in defeat in 1988. today marks nine years and 50 days in afghanistan. americas original goal was to track down osama bin laden

and wipe out the taliban. the soviet union wanted to turn them into a socialist state. neither goal has been met. getting attention because of what is inside. radio active went missing enroute from fargo, minnesota, to knoxville, tennessee. fedex is looking for the package. they don't believe it was stolen. a spokeswoman says the metal container carrying the nuclear material is safe as long as it isn't opened. u.s. authorities have found yet another sophisticated tunnel. underground tunnel running from a home in mexico, border town, to a warehouse a half mile away in san diego. police made several arrests, confiscated marijuana. federal agents are working with the mexican military now. a similar drug smuggling tunnel was found in the same area earlier this month. two american astronauts are

friday because the kids know their backpack is there and they are going to go to school to get it. teachers say to me, you've just given me an extra day to teach children. >> if you go to school on friday you have it. if you don't, you will miss out on it. >> we started seeing tremendous growth in reading, math as well as our attendance rate. i know how important nutrition is for kids to learn but i didn't know sending food home on the weekend would make such an impact on our children. he really didn't. >> the school is not just teaching them but is nourishing them. their bodies and their minds. and it makes them feel good about being here. >> reporter: for sandra morris, a single mom with three boys at whittier including a son who went interest trouble maker to the honor roll. >> when they come home with their backpacks full of food or whatever, they could just focus on getting straight to their homework because they don't have to go looking for things to eat or sit there hungry waiting for mommy to prepare

is our float. santa claus came to town. >> was in the teens this morning? >> it was. >> coldest morning since february. more of the country is snow covered this morning than at any points so far this fall. >> wow. >> and that's why the cold air is suddenly showing up on the scene because the highest activity surface in nature is snow. when you put snow down all the sunlight, much of the energy is reflected back to space, 70% or no. so you preserve the chill and that cold air can run off that snowpack. even streamers coming out of the clouds indicating some flurries trying to fall from them but just a little moist layer. how many will make it up to the surface i don't know. but one thing i will do is block the sunlight today and keep us from getting terribly warm. this air mass is cool to begin with. and here as steve mentioned are

the temperatures. in the mid-teens. so this didn't discriminate much it was cold across the area. and it is 27 right now with a gusty wind lowering windchills at o'hare. winds sustained at 17 going up to 26 at times. it is 28 at mid-way. 27. and some other windchills and temperatures around the area. pretty evident right there. these are the wind gusts. they never help when you have temperatures like this. it is the coldest day since february around here. we may not break above 30 degrees and there are some of the average windchills around the area. flags extended. sun is out. although clouds have come in in the last couple hours and there is the air mass, or snowpack off which this cool air is spinning. here is minnesota.

look at the snow on the ground there. look at the rain that fell yesterday in down state illinois. over 4 inches came down. so it was damp here but we didn't put up with anything like that. if you look carefully on this visible satellite imagery you can see the edge of the snowpack right here. and go from that area north to the arctic circle and will is no interruption in the area that is covered by snow. so this cold air is just pouring as deeply into the united states as it has at any point this season and keeping the temperatures there in the 20s. but there's warmer weather on the way. this bulge in temperatures corresponds with where the winds are blowing from the south out through the plains and that's ahead of a storm that is moving in through the west. that will turn our winds southerly over the weekend. we will not benefit from much warming tomorrow but by sunday we could be into the mid to upper 40s and the same thing on monday from all indications. there are the winds gusting in our area and still chilly in the region. in fact action here are the windchills as calculated by our computers and we have low teens

here. that's what the air feels like. but it feels like zero or blow up north. but look at the warming going on out west because this is our future right here. 21 degrees warmer in south dakota. 27 degrees warmer at bizmark. yesterday's rain turned briefly to snow south of us. pulling out of here. here are the current temperatures showing northward bulge of warmer air coming in. not much expected in the way of precipitation for a while until monday. big storm up here. winds rotating around it. see how the isobar stays packed. winds will stay up through tomorrow. but the strong southerly winds are marching ever farther eastward. by later tomorrow they will be coming into the western midwest and will be in here tomorrow night and sunday warming us up. dew point to show you where the air is of arctic origin because that's where the dew points are. no tropical moisture up here. all the humidity is in florida. air is dry and col.

there were places in the western u.s. in the last couple days that recorded the lowest november temperatures they have ever seen in parts of nevada, for instance. record low yesterday in los angeles. frost and freeze advisories. winter storm warnings down wind of the great lakes. but the next storm starts whitening the mountain tops. when will it start flowing? average day is november 5th. we are well beyond that date and we have not had measurable snow in the city in 33 of the last 125 years and this is one of them. that may begin to change. we are getting some snow numbers out of the models as you look out in the one to two- week range but that won't happen right away. it will just be cool. so here is our forecast for today. fall 2010 coldest yet. high temperatures hard pressed to hit 30. it will be windy and partly cloudy. there will be a west/north west

the school will turn it into biofuel for use in their campus shuttles. this fall they became the first school in the country to get federal approval to produce and sell its own biofuel. heartburn medications are safe for pregnant women but done take them in the month prior to becoming pregnant. researchers in denmark found an increased risk of a major defect from taking protons inhibitors. more on the study is in the new england journal of medicine. impact of secondhand smoke on a worldwide scale. the study analyzed data in 192 different countries from 2004. scientists examined the common deaths from smoking including respiratory disease and lung cancer among passive smokers. results showed secondhand smoke kills more than 600,000 people worldwide every year. this number can be added to the 5. 1 million smokers who die on

>> in chicago we don't have to worry about anything like that. we have cloud cover that has been spinning a flake or two out to the west of us but no major snow on the way anytime soon. the weekend will be quiet. this ten-day animation showing the coldest air starting to lift out a little bit tomorrow. we ought to get low 30s out of the air mass. mid-to upper 40s there on sunday and the winds line up through the atmosphere from the south. it ought to blow like crazy on monday and could even be some thunderstorms as a front arrives late in the day. then we turn cold again and snow shower on tuesday. and another wave comes in. this one could be interest late in the week. that might lay down a stripe of snow in our area but the really cold stuff is just north of the border and we will just kind of tap the southern flank of that over the next ten days. there is your jet stream forecast. our seven-day forecast is looking good. we go from 29 today to 33 tomorrow. that's cold. be back in the teens tonight.

then 35-mile-per-hour wind gusts looking in on sunday from the south though and push temperatures to 47 to 48. that southerly flow just as strong monday but moist. so rain showers begin developing especially as the day goes on. could be thunder late in the day before we transition late monday night and tuesday into snow showers and turn cold again on wednesday and thursday. flurry on wednesday morning as well. so a little taste of winner here all of a sudden. but nice for the holidays and for our travelers who don't have anything to worry about. >> that's so terrific. i like the idea of kind of snuggling up inside with the family. >> it is nice. >> put a log on the fire in the fireplace if you've got one. >> thank you so much for joining us today. >> enjoy your weekend. we will leave you with more music. ♪[ music ] captions by: caption colorado, llc 800-775-7838 email: comments@captioncolorado.com
