tonight salutes and sadness. chicago police perform an honor guard as they carry away one of their own killed in the line of duty. i'm dan ponce. >> i'm lourdes duarte. our top story seen around the country on wgn america tonight s.w.a.t. teams on a man hunt tonight searching for the killer of michael flisk and a former housing authority cop. wgn's jae miller is on the scene. >> reporter: man hunt is right. more than seven hours after that shooting occurred, chicago police continuing to canvas this neighborhood in search of that gunman who in broad daylight shot and killed a veteran chicago police officer and another man in cold blood.

police officers armed with assault rifles standing guard near the 8100 blood of south burnan tonight as this search for the when who killed officer michael flisk as well another man this afternoon. >> it goes to show how some people have absolutely no respect for human life. we have an evidence technician processing the scene of a burglary. >> reporter: the shooting happened just after 12:30. he was responding to a garage burglary when someone opened fire shooting him in the head as well as the homeowner. both were found in this alley. >> and sirens flashing and everything. so i came out the house. >> reporter: flisk was pronounced dead at the hospital. the other victim was pronounced dead another another hospital.

armed officers are checking vehicles while residents are being warned to stay in their homes as the search for the killer continues. >> we've never seen a crime scene like this in our area. never this close to home. >> reporter: police superintendent jody weis is vowing to catch the person responsible. >> the thought that someone can shoot and kill a police officer is simply unacceptable and we will find those responsible. we will squeeze that neighborhood and find who did this. >> reporter: so police have no one in custody at this hour. but the search continues in the last ten minutes or so we saw a couple of vehicles being towed from the scene here. we'll have to wait and see what if anything comes of that. meanwhile, officer flisk leaves behind a wife and four children. we understand he comes from a long line of police officers. three of his siblings are members of the chicago police department. the second victim, his name has yet to be released. back to you in the studio. >> thank you jae miller.

from jae miller to gaynor hall. she is at christ hospital where the other victim was transferred. >> reporter: the former cha police officer died here at advocate christ medical center. his friends and relatives trying to come to grips with this loss on the day after thanksgiving while not too far away from here in beverly, friends relatives and neighbors are gathering tonight at the home of officer michael flisk. >> he was just a really, really nice guy. >> reporter: several police squad cars parked outside of the home of officer michael flisk tonight. many say the husband and father of four was well known and loved by everyone on the block for his kindness. a neighbor matthew bafoe says two summers ago when his own work van broke down, it was officer flisk who fixed it free of charge. >> he was a very professional

police officer. always on the side of the right. and i really feel that today he was taken away from us and it's horrible. >> reporter: in oak lawn, friends of the other victim of the shooting consoling each other outside the advocate christ medical center. they are members of the mustang club he is a member of. >> he had some nice cars. i always admired the cars and everything but i never seen any problems he caused to anyone. it must have been a case of robbery or something. >> reporter: the name of that former cha police officer has not been released yet. neighbors of officer michael flisk tells us he was often seen riding through the neighborhood on his harley motorcycle. they say he was so proud of his job that he had been promoted

to that job more than three years ago. back to you. >> thank you for that report. still no identities tonight of a teenager from suburban bartlett who was killed during a hunting trip wednesday with his friends. authorities are investigating what they say was an accidental shooting. he was with two other teens, ages 18 and 14. police say the 14-year-old returns to their campfire inadvertently pointing the muzzle of the shot gun at the victim lying on the ground. as the shooter moved the gun away from him, it accidentally shot. loaded with radioactive material used in ct scans was finally found today. the box got separated from a largerment going from a hospital in fargo, north dakota, to knoxville, tennessee. fedex officials in knoxville

found the box. the container was not opened. nobody was exposed to radiation. fedex is now trying to figure out how that unmarked box came separated from the original package. police are cracking down on illegal parking in handicap spaces. don't be a grinch and steal a spot from the disabled. that is the message tonight from theistic tear of state's office. they're checking parking placards. fines ranged from 250 to $500. violaters could have their licenses suspended for months. they're still out there on a mission to grab the big holiday sales. >> let's look at michigan avenue where like other retail locations the bargains are there. retailers hoping you spent not just browsing. >> reporter: good thing santa

has his elves because many were making sacrifices for the bargains. hunters also spent a long cold night in long lines before they were finally allowed in for the kill. it didn't take long before people emerged boasting over their bargains. >> bought a 46-inch tv lcd $500. >> this is $15 and this is $15. i think they're 50% off. >> reporter: best buy was amongst the early bird shoppers because of the electronics sales. >> everyone is really shopping for everyone. >> reporter: many stores opened as early as 3:00 a.m. and they were jam packed within minutes and sometimes things got ugly. >> two guys almost fighting. i was getting elbowed.

>> reporter: retailers can only hope all those door buster deals got people to a buy more than just those deals. all the shoppers and shopping bags are a good sign. >> hopefully it means sales are up and we're pulling out of the recession and we're on the road to recovery. >> reporter: the best door buster deals were at 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. the malls actually started clearing out around 7:00 a.m. it was fast and furious but i heard not one person use the word fun. in norridge, wgn news. >> what? shopping not fun? how could that be? naperville leaders invited all 145 residents of naperville to pose for the city's holiday picture. those who did gathered at the base of the city's millennium

expensetive political campaign, the first real effects of the november elections is only a few days away. >> rick pearson sat down with mark kirk who will become the new senator next week. >> reporter: mark kirk resigned today. the 90 minutes later vice president joe biden will swear in kirk as the new senator. kirk's victory was a big one for the gop picking up president obama's former senate seat but can democrats and republicans now work together? >> you start with small steps. i met with senator durbin and we laid out an agenda where we will work together. i want to ban all sewage dumping in the great lakes. he agrees and wants to work with me on that. i want to maintain for the modern o'hare project. >> reporter: but in the new congress with republicans ending the democrat's one party rule, the socially moderate

kirk says the gop should avoid internal controversies on issues such as abortion. instead he says republicans should focus on the economy and mounting federal debt. >> i think from the republican party view, we need to focus on issues where we all agree. which is spending discipline and control. and making sure the government doesn't take more from our family budget. >> reporter: kirk said he wants a reagan-era type commission to recommend cuts in government. he also wants a big change in the health care reform law. but kirk says he's under no illusion that he got elected on a mandate. >> as i enter office in the senate it's with all humility. 48% of voters voted for me. 46% voted for my chief opponent. we had a tough election, but voters of illinois made a decision. now my job is to go into the senate and fight for everybody.

it was like a scene out of dickens. the white house christmas tree arriving from a farm in pennsylvania. the first lady and first daughters came out to get a look and enjoy the fresh scent of the tree. they gave the fur a big thumbs up. the art institute of chicago getting ready for the holidays. for the 19th year in a row they layed a wreath on the lion. each part of the wreath is powered by solar energy and will glow at night. they're in shades of red.

>> and hid under your covers. >> we have been commenting in the office thank goodness the thanksgiving parade was yesterday and not this morning. i feel for you. there's some good news. it's still cold tonight -- >> that's the good news? >> no that's the bad news. the good news is it won't stay that way. we're talking maybe 50 by sunday afternoon and low 50s early next week before the cold comes back in to the area. marveling at the lack of snow here even though there's eight times the snow across the united states that we had as the month began. this is the large percentage of the country under snow at any time this autumn. see these high clouds? we had some radar returns from these. it's possible a spot or two may have seen a flurry. they are passing on tonight. but usually gets mid-level clouds to develop as you start running warmer air up over the cool air. it will be a slow process to begin with but we could get

upper 30s out of it instead of the 29 we saw today at south elgin. 30 at wheaton. not since february have we been this cool. it was 32 at o'hare today. 29 is the current temperature there. the wind still blowing though. that produces a windchill. 26 at south elgin. there's a plot of the it was across the area. it won't be quite as cold tonight as last night. just updated to 20 at mchenry. 23 at glenview. there are the actual thermometer readings. the third storm in a week moving in out west. this is going to turn our winds south. and they will whistle through this area and warm up us. but they have storm warnings up in the mountains. look at the pacific roaring in

there the big waves. this is that system right here. and it takes a system like this to come on shore and turn the winds broadly southerly to warm the continent up and inject cold air like this mass in here now. that's just what happened today. with 20 and 340 degrees temperature increases across the plains states. that storm produced more than 4- 5 inches of rain down state. tonight there are frost and freeze warnings down to houston and brownsville. these are all winter weather advisories in anticipation of the latest snowstorm. what a banner year it's been. the fact so much of the country is covered by snow versus 10% this time last year is why a cold air mass like this one managed to get into the area. see how it's warming out in the plains? well we pushed the worst of the cold into the arctic. and won't tap that until early

next week and pulls some of the colder air in again. look how much of the united states is warmer tonight than 24 hours ago. and by significant margins. des moines is 18 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago. that's the warm-up headed this way. it will be a springlike quality to the air here. that will be nice before the next cold air mass comes in here with rain turning to maybe snow showers tuesday. it's bitingly cold out there tonight. single digits up north. the lake snows stacked up to 15 inches in michigan today. and there were other snows lower michigan today. winds are west at 13. humidity is 63%. there's the rains that went through the southern midwest. but here's this lake effect that this cold air has been producing up north. we're told half a foot or more

of snow so the snow mobilers can think of going up there to snow mobile. it starts as rain, that's the green area there on the coast. then as the air ascends into the cascades, it turns to snow. more than a foot of snow will fall in this system that comes ashore out there. the winds today were the result of this storm. this is the second one of the week to come through the area. then the next one cycles in and the isobars begin to pack and the winds respond by picking up in the plains and blow from the south. at first they'll not have any moisture. this air is dry by the dew points. and dry air heats up easily. low dew point air, lots of sun, then the jet stream coming around to the south sunday and monday and you have yourself a warm-up. goodbye to the cold air, hello

warm yup. 50-degree highs on sunday. low 50s on monday. then this cold air crashes in again. turns rain to snow showers tuesday. that begins to lift out of here then another system could run along the south flank of this mass and move from colorado or wyoming into central illinois next week. that could be very interesting. because that really is the first shot we've had at some sticking snow around here. only one year in the last 82 in chicago has not had measurable snow by now. that was 1999. that's one year besides this year. this is rare territory we're in. and not having had snow up to this point. and we're not going to have any in the near term either. clouds diminish tonight. blustery cold. low temperature 18 at o'hare. the official thermometer. then mostly sunny, breezy, and not as cool tomorrow. and high of 38 degrees.

on the medical watch: managing meals and keeping weight in check this holiday season. if you stuffed yourself for thanksgiving don't throw up your hands but do grab a chair. not for sitting, for exercising. joining me now is a certified personal trainer here in town.

you're going to teach us how to keep from maybe gaining weight with just a chair? >> that's all you need. >> no weights? no ball or arm bands or anything? >> nothing fancy. the biggest challenge people have with working out in a gym is they don't know what to do. >> it's intimidating i think. >> whether you're a beginner and don't know where to start, it's challenging they don't know what to do. i want to focus on basic stuff. how to progress it or make it less intimidating. >> let's go. >> nina will start off with a basic lunge. she's going to step forward and like that pushing back. if the balance is hard, your knees may be funky. she going to do a split squat. just come down like she's trying to touch her toes or tie her shoes. great way to tone it down if

you're a beginner. if you want something more challenging, all i need is my chair. >> except she doesn't get to sit. >> that's right. she's going to put a foot on that. she's going to caught down and jump up for me. just like that. >> lost balance a bit. so initially is it tough balancing that? >> it is. this is a progression. a lot of strength and power. fantastic progression. after this we're going to come down and we're going to focus on a basic plank. so the core hold right now she's going to be on her forearms and toes. this is what you'd do. >> how long do you want to be doing this? >> i would tell somebody probably do this for about a minute maybe two minute. most importantly focus on good posture and form. if your hips are starting to get low, your spine is starting to sag and lose integrity, you've been in too long.

cut it out. this is your basic core hold. if this is challenging, drop your knees to the mat. notice she still keeps her hips kind of low but spine aligned. this is a nice way to introduce yourself into doing the core hold. >> feeling like you can do an exercise even if you're not that strong yet and then have progression. >> exercise is not all or nothing. just because you can't do the standard, do something. this is something you can do. >> i think that's why people quit so often is because they feel they can't do this. back to the feet then; right? >> this is your basic plank. if this is too easy for you, you want something more challenging she's going to do something called around the world. she'll left her right arm, drop down left arm, drop that down

right leg. she'll keep circling around that like for up to a minute, to minutes. this is a serious core stablization work for you to do. from here we're going to go into the push-up. everyone is intimidated toot push-ups. she's going to do reps for me. this is what you see in the gym. if people can't do this, they don't want to step up to it. >> and you can go to the knees on this. >> she'll drop her knees. notice she's keeping her hips and spine nicely aligned and down for a push up. >> and how about the tough one? >> she's going to spiderman push-ups. >> i love this idea. >> she's going to bring her knee ward her elbow as she does her push-up. it's serious and stuff. she's probably sweating there. she can go ahead and relax. >> you can relax because these are some great exercises.

stop your world. chicago bears ticket buyers, beware. chicago police say they are seeing a spike in counterfeit bears tickets. scam artists are using site like ebay and craigslist to sell fake tickets. the fake tickets have offcenter type, spelling errors, and bogus seat numbers. buyers don't find out about these until they are turned away from the gate. stick with ticket master or nfl ticket exchange online.

and you can see the lows this morning. lows like 20 in california. santa barbara went down to 31. so it was chilly. utah was minus one. so a cool morning across the west. and not storm moving out there. that initially whitens the mountains out there. it will set up a howling south wind that by sunday afternoon will be gusting to 30 miles an hour. and to 35 or 40 miles an hour or more monday. look at the jet stream. see that flow? we're right under the strongest of the jet. and that's going to warm us up. look at these temperatures from 38 tomorrow after today's 32 to 50 sunday. 53 monday. then temps fall, rain changes to snow showers on tuesday. maybe some flurries wednesday and another system brings some snow late in the day thursday that could mix up with some
