us around the country on wgn america and on the web. wgn's julian cruz is live in the news zone with information on our top story. >> reporter: the reward money has been upped to $20,000 as detectives continue to question a 19-year-old parolee. the chicago tribune says the person of interest they are talking to lives across the alley from the crime scene. but no word yet on any formal charges. it's been a challenging week for the chicago police department. purple bunt bunting is up at headquarters at 35th and michigan as fellow officers mourn their loss. >> please. >> reporter: shauna peters has suffered the most terrible of losses. she is pleading with the public grieving the loss of her husband stephen peters. the former chicago housing authority officer was gunned down in a south chicago alleyway friday along with police evidence technician

michael flisk. they were investigating a garage burglary on the 8100 block of south bi ralph nham. officers are trying to turn up information that will lead to charges. the 44-year-old stephen peters was widely admired. his wife says that he had a warm and fun-loving personality. >> no one had nothing bad to say about this man. he was a good person, he had a good heart. >> reporter: once again, no charges against the person of interest being questioned by police but the tribune says the 19-year-old was on parole for a 2007 armed robbery. in the newsroom, julian cruz, wgn news. >> julian, thank you for that report. the thrill of the chicago bears big win at soldier field has been tempered by the death of a fan. stewart haverty fell 20 feet and landed on a small rooftop on the west side of the stadium. he later died. witnesses told emergency workers they saw haverty run up

to a ledge and jump. but friends say he may have hopped over the railing to smoke a cigarette before he fell. they say haverty was a skilled climber who liked to scale buildings and trees. an autopsy is scheduled for today. police and the f.b.i. resumed their search today for three boys from michigan. the 5, 7, and 9-year-olds were reported missing friday, the day after their father tried to commit suicide. volunteers and authorities are searching farmland and wooded areas looking for the kids. their father says he gave the boys to a female friend before he tried to kill himself on thursday. they were with him as part of a court-ordered visitation. the boys' parents are estranged and going through a divorce. a fire that killed a 5-year- old boy and injured 5 other people on chicago's south side has left another young victim clinging to life a2-year-old girl has taken a turn for the worse and is in critical condition. the girl was one of three children hospitalised after fire ripped through a home near 69th and wabash friday night. 5-year-old christiand densmore

died from carbon monoxide poisoning. he had stayed by his injured grandmother's side even though she told everyone to get out of the house. authorities are still looking for the cause but they do not suspect foul play. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the house to explode in the west pullman neighborhood last night. measure july claire is live in west pullman, meriam? well apparently we have lost her and will come back to her if we can. classes at chicago public schools do not end until mid- june but today is the last day for the ceo of chicago schools. ron huberman informed the mayor he would step down because he didn't want to work for the next mayor. he took the job in 2009. he leaves without fulfilling many of his goals including a $40 million antiviolence project. the president and ceo of the chicago community trust will take over. senator elect mark kirk

will resign his seat in congress before he is sworn in the senate later today. kirk will be sworn in after beating out alexi giannoulias for president obama's vacant senate seat. we're live in washington, d.c. with more. tom? >> reporter: yeah, good afternoon to you allison, it will happen under the dome behind my 4:30 chicago time this afternoon, history will be made and a five-time north shore congressman mark kirk will be sworn in as illinois' newest u.s. senator. i want to show you some video, images you won't see anywhere else because wgn tv was the only media outlet anywhere to join mr. kirk as he checked out his new senate offices for the first time this morning. looking around his workers were still doing their thing in there. he'll be sworn into complete the remainder of president obama's unexpired senate term taking over from roland burriss. that after a bitter campaign

and narrow victory over democrat alexi giannoulias. he talked to us very openly today about a ha moment here in washington when he realized that this was really happening. >> i will just say i have one personal moment since the election that capsulizes everything. i had early appointments and i was in the capital around 7:30 a.m. no one was there. i walked into the senate chamber, the capital police woman recognized me so she let me walk in. i was alone in the senate chamber, it was what i would describe as a mr. smith goes to washington moment because i saw the movie, i remembered jimmy stewart's role, i have not been in the senate chamber until then. i looked at roland burriss' desk because he told me bobby kennedy carved his name in the bottom of the drawer, sure enough, there it was. you get a sense of history. the compromise for 1850, the world war 1, world war ii, and

residents who went through the night without gas service now say that their service has been restored, the blast occurring about 7:30 sunday night, reduced a 1 1/2 story house and all the furnishings inside to rubble. neighboring homes and several vehicles were also damaged. a 30-year-old resident of the home that blew apart is hospitalised in serious to critical condition and two teens who were in a home next door are hospitalised in fair to serious condition and neighbors are still wondering what caused the explosion. >> everybody here is just in a state of shock. houses are moving, things are, you know, it's just like a new orleans bomb, that's what it was just like. people just didn't know what to do. kids everywhere. >> and we saw all, everything goin' on, and i couldn't get to the house, i didn't know if it was my house that was grown up or what happened, you know. so i was just nervous to death.

>> reporter: well neighbors are anxious for answers and so are investigators. they have been here on the scene all morning digging through the rubble, asking questions, and trying to come up with some answers. we're told that the fire department is handling the investigation and as soon as they have something to report i'm sure it will be reported. and i am reporting live from the pullman community, muriel claire, wgn news. >> muriel, thank you for that report. the obama administration is asking agencies to review procedures for classified information. memos show that u.s. officials did not have really good impressions of leaders from germany, italy and other countries. one shows king abdullah of saudi arabia repeatedly urging the u.s. to destroy iran's nuclear program.

they say the memos are meant to cause mischief. a shooter turned his weapon nato troops during training exercises in eastern afghanistan hostage. he was also killed during the incident. it is unsure whether the man was actually a police officer or someone who had infiltrated the exercise. all 6 nato troops killed were american, afghan authorities and nato will continue to investigate the incident. south korea is not saying why it canceled an artillery exercise today on the island that was attacked by the north. north korea says a similar exercise last week led it to fire its own artillery rounds at the island killing four people. south korea's president addressed the incident promising a tougher retaliation if it happened again. south korean and american warships are conducting previously scheduled exercises now. they are investigating fire at a mosque in portland linked to a terrorist.

it broke out yesterday about 90 miles from portland in islamic center. they say it was deliberately set. mouhamed mouhamed, terror suspect, occasionally worshipped there. he is due in federal court today. police in portland have beefed up patrols around mosques to prevent possible retaliation. the un agency that oversees aviation is pushing new guidelines for cargo security to counter al queda's new mail bomb strategy. it focuses on supply chain security or checking out bound shipments before they reach the airport. but they stopped short of calling for 100% screening of packages, concerns about cargo security are growing as the number of packages moving around the world picks up during the holidays. currently the u.s. does not screen cargo planes in flights coming from abroad. are you looking for an airline that has comfortable planes and good food? zagat surveys asked people to

president obama has announced a two-year pay freeze on government salaries for most federal employees. the president says it is the first of many difficult moves to help balance the deficit. the freeze will not affect the military but it will apply to civilian military workers including those at the department of defense. the salaries of political aids and appointees have already been frozen, it could save over $5 billion in two years. are you looking for seasonal work? three big companies are hiring right now. ups is adding 50,000 jobs and some of those jobs will become permanent. it's looking for drivers, package sorters and others. the dollar store is looking for managers an clerks. you don't have to be anointer net whiz to work at google. they are hiring account managers as well as engineers. companies will looking to debit cards as a way to

eliminate paper checks for people who don't have bank accounts. it's cheaper for a company than buying, processing anding out paychecks. a pay card allows them to avoid fees charges by check cashing companies. it can be used at atm's and wherever debit cards are accepted. it could be hit with debit card fees. cyber monday, many stores are offering online deals, deals like twitter and four square make it easy to find deals by directly send you scores. price check app and shop savvy allow you to scan bar codes in scores and compare prices. they have already kicked off a festival of deals in hundreds of local markets. i'm here at the scenery group in chicago. after a weekend of black friday deals holiday shopping

continues with shopping today. they suggest that cyber monday sales could hit a record 1 billion-dollar. and it could be even merrier for the holidays afterwards according to come score ink. online sales this holiday season are projected to hit a level we haven't seen since before the recession. okay. how's this for shopping. sarah lee buying brazil's cafe dough mass company to expand into the coffee industry there for $60 million u.s. dollars. the transaction is expected to close by the end of this month. meanwhile a coffee war is brewing between craft and starbucks, illinois' craft foods is saying it will challenge starbucks rediscover coffee distribution agreement now starbucks says craft didn't promote starbucks brand and wants to end the deal. craft says, if it wants to do that, starbucks has to compensate craft for the fair market value of the business. okay. lastly when it comes to the holidays you might find a smart phone under your tree this year. from your kids. research from i bc says older

some politicians and college presidents are speaking out for immigrant rights. supporting a bill that would help young undocumented immigrants. wgn's robert jordan is live at the university of illinois at chicago where advocates of the so-called "dream act" are meeting. bob? >> reporter: that's right allison. you know, with congress going back into session this week after the thanksgiving holiday break they -- one of the first items on the agenda will be the dream act and, already, 8 university presidents in illinois have signed a statement in support of the dream act and there is bipartisan support as well. but senator mark kirk has gone on record as opposing the dream act. so at the uic this morning several politicians were lining up to urge him to support it as did some undocumented students who are urging kirk to support

the act. >> we ask senator kirk to support this and help people like us make our dream come true. >> reporter: in a crowded room filled with representatives of many immigrant groups speakers urged members of congress to pass the dream act to help millions of young people begin a journey towards citizenship. >> i hope that senator kirk along with others of his party will support the dream act. we have always had considerable support on the democratic side. we hope to gain the support of republicans as well. >> reporter: illinois senator dick durbin is one of the sponsors of the dream act which would allow immigrants who arrived in the united states under the age of 15 to get on a path towards citizenship after completing at least two years of college or military service. >> this just does not affect latinos, it affects asians, it affects europeans, it affects people from around the world, polish, as tony pregwig talked about, irish. everybody is affected by this.

let's pass the dream act that has bipartisan support. so mark kirk, make your first official act an act that will count? illinois' other senator, newly elected mark kirk, is on the record as opposing the dream act and those in attendance say they plan to urge the senator to change his mind? he said he wasn't for it, we feel that this is an important act that he needs to follow and support the dream act because it will benefit not just illinois but thousands of young people across the country. >> reporter: and former illinois governor jim edgar supports the dream act, as do other republicans as well. and so the supporters are saying there is bipartisan support so far but there are still lawmakers who need to be convinced that the dream act is the best legislation so far on the southwest side, robert jordan, wgn news. >> all right bob, thank you. chicago has grand plans for the former site of megs field

and those plans will be unveiled. the airport was permanently closed by mayor daley in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. now known as norm island it may be turned into a park and sank you the our rye for birds and fish. developers want to turn the old shell of megs terminal into an open air plan tear yum. chicago's winter parking ban begins this week. this wednesday, december 1st, no parking is allowed from december 1st to april 1st from 3:00 in the morning to 7:00 a.m. and when there is at least 2" of snow. violators will get their cars towed, pay a minimum $150 fee, then on top of that get a $50 parking ticket. on the first day last year over 200 people failed to follow the parking van. speaking of snow, tom skilling is just ahead to tell us if we'll see any snow this week.

you're watching "wgn midday news." >> you got this? >> got a nice warm up in the works today? we do. and then the bottom drops out. you know this is the last couple days in november and we go up and down, it's a wild time of the year. we're not going to get what the folks out in the midwest are going to get, sticking snow that police around, but you know this is the winter that december begins and december starts the three-month meteorological winter period so this is a time of transition. that's for sure. but it's nice today. we have been watching these clouds come in and we we have have a few sprinkles out of these clouds. that will grow into rain and maybe a clap of thunder.

we're getting lightning returns from our data out in iowa and mississippi river. that's as a cold front marches this way. wind are howling and arctic air on the move again behind it. we've got some wintery were out in the midwest. it's windy and wind often accompanies these big weather changes. gusts over 30 at valparaiso, 230 at minooka and rochelle, at o'hare we've got a sustained wind of 14. just updated with gust to 24. it's 45 there, 46 at midway, and 39 at south elgin, normal high this time of year is 42. so we're pretty close to than and above it already. we have a couple of hours of warming yet to go. there is a plot of the temperatures across the metro area and the fact that we also have some wind chills that we can calculate shows up here at mchenry, lake geneva feels like 42 despite a 47 they are momter reading and 42 is the wind

chill at glenview. carpentersville is 36. here is a view from south village where the sunshine shown down on much of the area fades away under these thickening clouds t clouds are the result of this storm. see the kind of shape right there, always a signature on the satellite, satellite presentation of the storm tim. warm air up the eastside, arctic air down the backside, snow breaking out across the dakotas at this hour. here is a real good look at the thunderstorms as the warm moist air feeds northward and we include some thunder in these cells right our here by the mississippi river approaching the quad cities and quincy at this hour. and then you can see how we go to snow back in the white areas there. we'll animated this and put in the lightning data and there you can see the thunder. that thunder would be in here tonight. the little radar returns we're seeing in our area have been sprinkling down on okay brook for instance at this hour. we have flood watches in these green areas, all sorts of winter weather advisories from wind advisories to winter storm

warnings to winter weather advisories in the open areas. the counties that show up in white on this map. the red counties are the winter storm warning areas. that's minneapolis, that's duluth, so you get an idea of the area involved in the really wintery weather and our model shows that the heaviest snow accumulations, locally up to 8", will come down in parts of minnesota on the cold side of this storm. now here is what happens in our area. see the rains come through here, and these little yellow inserted areas are little inserts, are little embedded showers of a heavier nature, might even include a clap of thunder or a clash of lightning. that's along the line here between the cold air diving into the west off this vast reservoir of chilly air, look at the temperatures of 20 blow up in alaska's brooks range and northern uconn and extending into the plains states with cold air. could bring us our first official snow flurries of the season, we haven't had any yet at midway airport up to this point in time. we have some ice pellets that

were identified in the records as snow flurries but they weren't technically so it will be interesting to see if we get some flurries across the area tomorrow. looks like we may well. we're 1 degree warmer than 24 hours ago while sioux falls and grand island, nebraska, and huron, south dakota, are more than 20 degrees colder than 24 hours ago. and you can see how much of the nation is cooling off as the arctic winds blow out west and replace the southerly winds in our area. 36 here in chicago, 41 up the lake in green, even marquette, michigan, pretty global by late november standards, 28. as winds below south at 18, humidity is at 68%, the lake has cooled to 61 degrees. well here we are. when you see a big dip like this, that's cold air diving into the country contrasting with warm air, could setup some powerful thunderstorms along this jet stream but then, as we get on the cold side of the jet tomorrow, those temps are gonna dive and at the surface what's going to happen here is the

southerly winds of today that go southeastern monroe and northern east tonight will switch to the southwest and the north northwest tomorrow and wednesday and, between all those wind shift, we're going to see temperatures in the low 50s today evaporate to 40 early tomorrow and fall during the day and only get up to around 30 degrees by wednesday. later in the week there is a system that's coming this weekend that runs along the thermal boundary. will that be snow or rain and might that be our first sticking snow? a possibility in the parts of the midwest. we'll keep our eyes on that. we're getting snow models in 1 to 2 week ranges here. that's sticking snow. we're going to get brief showers today, high 52, 16 to 32, gusting to above 35 at times. tonight, rain increases, maybe an embedded thundershower in spots, about a third to as much as 8/10ths of an inch of rain expected out of this, a low tonight down to 40. then from 40 we tumble tomorrow, cloudy blustery much

kind of a playoff atmosphere at soldier field yesterday. the bears proved the doubters wrong. jay cutler showed early on he was ready for the challenge when he finds earl bennett in the end zone. toward the end of the first he found johnny knox for anotherred the pass to go up 14- 3. the turning point in the game, when the defence forced michael vick to throw his first interception of the season. cutler took advantage of the turnover to find earl bennett once again for a td pass. the defense held their own the rest of the way. the bears win 20 -- 31-26. today greg olson spoke about the team's over all effort. >> to be an all round team, a super bowl caliber team you need to play well on both offense and defence. for a while around here it's been pretty well recognized the defense has been kind of the top dog and really carried this team for a lot of years. and offense, we have taken a lot of pride in saying eh beer going to be just as good as our
