longer on the street. he's 19 years old but already has a history. police say he is the man who shot and killed chicago police officer michael flisk and steven peters. friday afternoon, officer flisk and an evidence technician was processing a crime scene after steven peters called in a burglary. police say the suspect snuck up behind them and shot them to death. >> the weapons recovered were in their holsters so it appears this individual snuck up on them, and they never had a chance to defend themselves. hopefully that will play out later in court but that's what we know this time. >> reporter: police would not release much information about the investigation but say they believe herring killed the two men because he was trying to cover up an earlier burglary he

committed. >> can't give you a lot of details right now but the suspect simply did not want to be caught for a burglary. he was already on patrol as it was. >> reporter: superintendent jody weis says police investigators were able to catch him quickly. he lives across the alley where the shooting happened. formal charges didn't come down until late this afternoon. >> we have every capacity in the chicago police department working 24 hours a day on this. we have organize crime division, detectives, we have our crime lab and evidence folks, the district law, tax teams. you take every asset we had, and we used it and in about three days, we had an individual charged. >> reporter: another man is also facing charges in connection with these killings. 22-year-old timothy willis is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and obstruction of justice. he and timothy herring will appear in bond court this week. police say timothy herring is eligible for the death penalty,

mark and micah. >> thanks. a hostage stand off in wisconsin over tonight. earlier today, police say the armed student burst into one classroom in wisconsin near green bay and held several people hostage. it happened about 3:00 this afternoon. four hours later, all the hostages were released unarmed. still no reason why a home in chicago's neighborhood blew up injuring three people tonight. home at 122nd and ada exploded about 11:30 last night. that blast destroyed a 1 1/2 story house and left rubble scattered all over the place. the person in the home is hospitalized in critical condition and two neighborhood children are hospitalized in fair to serious condition. >> everybody here is just in a state of shock. houses are moving, things are -- you know, it's just like a new orleans bomb. that's what it was just like. >> and meanwhile, people's gas says services have been restored to the homes around that scene.

the indicating death at soldier field was ruled an accident. he fell 35 feet from a concourse on the roof of a storage building at half time during the bears eagles game. witnesses say they saw them run and jump over a 3 foot barrier to his death. they say he thought he was going for a cigarette and was unaware he had fallen. huberman stepped down with seven months left in the academic school year. telling mayor daily he would resign because he didn't want to work for the next mayor. terry mizay will take over as interim ceo. one airline passenger not free to move about the country, at least on one airline. why a man was not allowed on a southwest airlines flight. a holiday weekend dinner, a disaster, what caused this horrific scene at a california

situation. lourdes duarte spoke with them and has the story. >> reporter: this was supposed to be their first time flying, two brothers flying to minnesota to visit their aunt and one is told he's too big to fit in his seat and needed to buy a second ticket. they said they were fine with that but the airline made things so difficult they had to miss their flight. 18-year-old timothy white and his brother will back in chicago playing on their laptop their aunt bought them in minnesota. a trip that started all wrong. >> i was mad and angry. >> reporter: here's why. minutes before their southwest flight to minnesota was supposed to take off on thanksgiving night, timothy is pulled out of line and told -- >> i'm going to have to buy another ticket. too big to fit in one seat, and that's before i even got on the plane. >> reporter: his weight was the issue. he needed a second seat. with no cash on them, will and timothy called their aunt.

she tried to purchase a second ticket over the phone with no credit card but no luck. >> they tell her she can't pay for the ticket over the phone and we'd just have to miss the flight. >> they said they couldn't take the credit card over the phone, it would be fraudulent and he don't know who she is or whatever. >> we had some system limitations that would prohibit the aunt from purchasing their extra seat for travel, so it was really a perfect storm, unfortunately, for the customer involved. >> reporter: and with no time left, that plane took off without them. timothy and will ended up taking a greyhound bus all the way to minnesota. >> i think it was the fact that they told us about the ticket thing four minutes before the flight had to take off. that was our biggest thing because we had been there since 5:00, 5:30, we feel like if they would have told us when we first got there, then we'd have enough time to buy the ticket and they would have fixed everything that was going wrong. >> reporter: here's what

happened tonight, southwest called the brothers, apologized, given them a round trip credit and refunded their outbound flight as well. tonight, the brothers say they want a personal apology from the agency who handled their ticket and also think they should be reimbursed for their bus ticket to minnesota, mark. >> thanks. it was a program to put the people of illinois back to work. governor pat quinn kicked in $75 million in state cash before the election to employ 26,000 people. now, putting illinois to work is about to expire and some people are hoping the program can get more state cash to continue. >> we find ourselves on the eve of this program and these jobs going away. 26,000 families that will be impacted, and 13,000 of those 26,000 live in the stay of chicago. >> the illinois nowork program is something controlled by the governor and funding does not need general assembly approval. we should know tomorrow if the

governor extends it again. as we get older, our attitudes in life change towards so many things. >> our chicago tribune editorialist has something about what he calls keeping the men in blue safer. >> i have a confession, growing up in los angeles i didn't always like the cops, i found them to be brutal and corrupt. but time went by, and i woke up, and more importantly, i grew up. i realized these guys see the worst of humanity, horrors you and i can't even imagine. are there some bad cops out there? sure, there are. but there's bad people in every possession. think about it. they stand between you and the bad guys. they're willing to take a bullet for us. for 13 years i've been honoring police officers fallen in the line of duty. sadly this weekend, i had to honor another one of chicago's finest. that's my stantis for tonight.

mother, her adult son in critical condition, and another customer sitting at the counter were hit by debris and had minor injuries. the driver was given a field sobriety test, which was negative, but even with no alcohol involved the driver could face stiff charges. police say the father of three missing boys from washington lying about being with a mystery woman. these boys, ages 5, 7 and 9 last seen in thanksgiving in their back yard. john skeleton told police he left them with a friend before trying to kill himself. police say he had no relationship with the person named. he recently lost his job and was in a custody fight with his mother. a suspect in the oregon terror plot pleads guilty of weapons of mass destruction. he entered a plea this afternoon in federal court. the somali american accused of trying to blow up the christmas tree ceremony in downtown

portland friday. fbi agents once again supplied the fake explosives as part of the sting. a defense lawyer accuses them of entrapment. the president obama administration launching a criminal investigation into how secret documents were leaked. the website wiki leaks poked at thousands of state department documents. some of the documents embarrassing to some leaders. one memo says the prime minister of italy loves to party hard. white house says president obama was briefed about the leak. >> the president was, as an understatement, not pleased with this information becoming public. >> the secretary of state hillary clinton said today the administration deeply regrets any embarrassment the leaks caused.

she also says the leaks erode trust between nations but insist us partnerships will withstand this problem. president obama taking heat after announcing he wants to freeze pay for federal employees. it would impact about 2 million civilian federal workers. white house officials report the move would save about $5 billion over the next two years. union leaders call the plan a slap at working people, but the president says it's just one of the tough decisions ahead to get the deficit under control. president obama still playing basketball despite getting an elbow to the lip the day after thanksgiving. the president took 12 stitches to his lower lip while playing basketball. sunday, the president was back on the court but up against slightly more manageable opponents. >> for those of you who are worried about my lip, i should be okay. the doctor has given me a clean bill of health and i will continue to be playing

older. if you start running you burn more fat eating the same meal as someone who's a regular runner. it's one of the findings of a new study of distance runners. fat burns off first but long distance runners also burn their own muscle. daily runners showed muscle degeneration because of the massive energy consumption and surprising findings in the research presented today at the radiological society of north american meeting. it's okay to run through some pain. using mri scanners, researchers found muscle strains did not get worse when athletes ran through them. a good massage may seem like a way to pamper yourself after a massage or any run but it's a way of protecting yourself from illness. in addition to easing anxiety and helping you sleep, it boosts the immune system. they submitted blood samples during and after their massage. stress hormones decrease and various cells that boost immune

bit today. >> it was. >> i agree. >> it was very close to the day's high right now. usually, we have one day left in november and december starts on wednesday. does that seem possible? and it's meteorological winter. it's interesting, mark and micah, we will end the sunniest autumn, today notwithstanding in almost 11 years. everyone in the last nine months have been above normal. that means the entire spring, summer and fall have been above normals as we look at clouds coming in, and boy, the raining on the area. every one of the last seasons has been warmer than normal so it's about time for a little cooler weather and boy it's on the move tonight. we'll show it to you in just a bit. tomorrow will be a day of change, starting with mild and cooling off. we may have our first official snow flurries at mid way airport on the way in a few hours and a system friday night and saturday

to be watched. at this hour, it's still 46 degrees in mchenry, 48 in dekalb, island lakes at 44, and the winds are cutting in just a little bit. see the cooling near the water off the lakes. it's 46 at o'hare. that's normal than the normal high of this time of year, 47 at midway, 57, gary, the low 50s, and there it is, a map of a very mild almost october-like november evening here, and look at the rains that have come down. they've been really pouring down in places. over 2/3 of an inch here, and there you see the wind chills around the area, not much when you consider the winds blowing as strong as they are. that's the view at samwitch as the rains came in. look at the snow on the back side of this system. it's stacked up to about 5 inches in parts of minnesota, and here's redwood falls covered

by snow in minnesota. it's the snow showers in this weather system that may affect us. this is not the only storm this week. see this big ark of clouds right here, there's energy off the west coast, and particularly the european models, as well as the navy and canadian model, they take energy from this speed, drive it across the country and bring it into the area friday night and saturday for what could be the first sticking snow and sleet around the area. there's a lot of details to fill in and we've been talking about that since last week and we'll keep an eye on that. what we get in the way of these back washed flurries tomorrow won't stick in a serious way. look at the rains tonight, about ready to pause a little bit but these things come out of thunderheads earlier today or towering cumulonimbus clouds. the cloud tops in these brighter cells reach up to 27,000 feet.

you can see there's probably going to be a pause here in a couple of hours, and then we'll go into some more showers. there's a cold front right out here that could redevelop some showers by morning. visibility has been cut a little bit, as you can see right there, by the precipitation, but this system is producing tornado watches in the south, flood watches in the mid-atlantic and snow and winter weather advisories west of the twin cities up to dluth and the arrow head where they've certainly had their share of winter weather at this point. and you notice our model is showing white in this area, and i don't think a lot of that will stick but we will have snow flurries in the air starting as early as perhaps tomorrow afternoon. there's the cold front going through and these are the white elements passing through, the snow flurries, as the cold air, diving into the country, and there's more where that came from as we pan up and look at the cool air, this vast reservoir that we'll tap a

couple more times in the next week. our forecast in the area, and we'll give you more details on the late weak system and the chilly air. rain, flashing lightning in spots, sprinkles tonight, building to showers tomorrow morning. mild for this time of year. 43, southwest wind by the morning, and 48 to 28 and gusty. cloudy and windy, turning much colder as the day goes on. morning sprinkles and brief showers will change to flurries and a couple of snow showers in the afternoon. 43 and falling to the low 30s by night fall. tomorrow night, snow showers and flurries, windy and colder in the final hours of november, low of 22. and wednesday, the open of meteorological weather, and flurries and a high of 28 degrees. that's pretty amazing. >> it is indeed. >> i have to tell you, this next story is really interesting. i had an e-mail from a couple of

young people who profess to be winter sports enthusiasts who are absolutely frustrated by the lack of snow so they said they went to work and researched how to make snow and that's what our story is about here. this is amazing. still waiting for the season's first big snow storm, a pair of high school seniors are way ahead of mother nature this year. the south side teens can't wait for winter but they're set for snow anyway. >> my favorite season is definitely winter. most people would say summer. >> i fell in love with snow the minute i started snow boarding. >> hi, i'm kevin za netty. >> i'm george rosa and i love making snow. at first we didn't think we could make snow but after looking into it on the internet, we realized you can do it at home. we bought the equipment, bought the parts, and we made it

happen. >> the two main things that power the snowmaker would be an air compressor and a water pump, in this case a pressure washer. those two work together by pushing all the water through galvanized piping and through nozzles. and they come with nozzles that mix with decompressed air, and they fall and this is how you make snow. >> the secret to good snow making is just being dedicated to it. you have to come out at times where the temperatures are good, where the conditions are good. >> usually temperatures in the lower teens would be perfect. >> i'm tired, making snow, it's got to be cold and the coldest time is the middle of the night so it's my 18th birthday and i have to spend it all sleeping because i was up all night. >> i'm kevin mineti's father. i was shocked at how much snow they could make. last season we were the last

are mutual. >> i really really love this age. they're finding themselves so every day something different. some days are not always the best days, but it's that they're really starting to become young adults, really starting to become passionate about what's going to drive them in the future and i love to be part of that. >> she taught us how to love ourselves in and out, and accomplish really anything we wanted to. >> reporter: in the lesson, ms. i wants to make sure her students apply outside the classroom too so she introduces them to a hobby that keeps her motivated, challenge and fit. >> this would be a great thing for our girls in school because there's a lot of intra mural activities but it's co-ed, so i thought that a girl's club focusing on health and body image.
