in gary, indiana. it is named for jen net winters, the first woman to die in the afghanistan war. a used furniture calls the shelter to say he bought things when the family failed to make payments in 2008. the family wants the items back but they come with a price they cannot afford to pay. a year after she died in afghanistan, her family's life collapsed. her father had two strokes and fell behind on his payments where he held memories of her military service. the memories were recovered by a businessman and he is not willing to give them back. >> it means nothing for him t mean as lot to me. >> she followed her brother's lead into the marines and the items would have little value to anyone but the family, the flag that was on her coffin, a report on the crash and letters from the president bush and mayor. >> i cannot do that.

she gave all she had and could. the thing we can do,ky not let her -- i cannot let her name or the marines get exploited by someone on ebay. >> reporter: those behind the shelter do not want it to happen either t is named for the sergeant and will open at the end of the year in gary. leaders say they would love to display her items inside. >> i said i will give you $1000 cash and four tickets to the bears for the season. you know, he said, well, i have more money in it. >> reporter: he will sell the items for $1500 cash, cash the family doesn't have and those behind the shelter's offer are not budging. the issue has drained him and left him confused. but he says he is not a villain. >> i had the stuff for six or seven years i did not threat go, i kept it in good shape.

measure that carries some of the benefits of marriage. the senate will vote and could pass there. the governor will sign the bill if it takes it to his desk w the civil unions, couples would be treated under law as if they were married in a variety of different ways. joining us to talk about the significance of that vote is the sponsor of the bill in the state house of representatives greg harris of chicago. greg, thank you for joining us. >> good evening. >> what would it do if it made it through to the governor's desk for those who would like civil unions? >> it would give people pacific relationship rights -- basic relationship rights in the state and visit partners in hospitals, probate rights, you know those are the fundamental legal rights that a lot of people take for granted. >> it was tough to get passed. how heated did it get in there? >> i was proud even though

and dan ponce is at the funeral of michael flisk. >> reporter: this the visitation was supposed to wrap up at 9:00 but there are dozens of people here paying their respects to the family of officer michael flisk. since 3:00 this afternoon, there has been a stream of friends, family members and police officers mourning the loss of one of their own. >> a display of unity by the police department, some waited

in line outside for more than an hour most did not know officer michael flisk personally, they're standing together in support of the family and the police force. a few hours before the visitation started, the officer's killer appeared in court. a judge ordered the suspect held without bail. he is facing two counts of murder in the killing of thester and former cha officer steven peters. >> as you know they occurred on friday when the officer was processing a crime scene at a fa rage where the car of peters had been robbed by her ring. >> reporter: new information was disclosed. when officer michael flisk arrived herring approached them saying he knew who was responsible for the robbery. the officer responded that it didn't matter because he had fingerprints that would led him to the culprits. >> the defendant walked away and pulled out a gun and shot the two in the head. >> he went back as they were in the ally and shot them each in the head a second time to make sure they were dead, according to the prosecutors. they say he admitted to killing

them because he didn't want to be caught. he did not want to return to prison n september he was released on parole after serving three years of a prison sentence for robbery of a store. today the mayor and the police superintendent expressed outrage that he was paroled. >> it is insane that people are getting out early after they tried to kill someone. >> reporter: the mayor believes it warrants the death penalty. >> under the system we should protect life and in situations like this, this should be a death penalty case. >> reporter: prosecutors are charging him with attempted murder in connection with another shooting that happened in june. only 19 but has an extensive criminal record. funeral services for the officer tomorrow at 10:00. he will be buried with full honors. >> thank you. police are questioning a suspect in a south side triple murder. a mother and her daughters were found stabbed to death in their apartment. stacey hill and her daughters.

the man in custody knew jade and killed her first before attacking the others. a nightmare for the family and those around them. >> when she called me, i got up and came over. >> she loved going to work and crazy about her kids. they were her world. >> she worked at a hospital. high school senior jade was applying to colleges. the grandmother said she was quiet. counselors were at the schools of the children today. tonight the son of accused wife killer drew peterson could be suspended from his job. he is in trouble for hiding his father's guns for investigators. and we go to the fire and board meeting in oak brook. what have you heard? >> reporter: you know what, no decision on whether steven peterson should be suspended

without pay. that's drew peterson'sson, he is a police officer here in oak brook. for nearly an hour tonight, the board heard from his son about the weapons that his father gave him to hang on to. now the younger peterson has been suspended with pay since august. the chief here has been trying to get him suspended without pay and get him fired for several reasons. one, he did not let the state police know about a quarter of a million given to him after stacey's disappearance. number two for the department is that he held on to illegal weapons given to him by drew and the number three reason talking about the disciplinary case with others. when questioned today, steven said that he see was he has been put through as harassment he did not talk about the guns and rifles, he didn't think it was relevant to the

investigation, he trusted his father when he asked him to guard his valuable weapons. >> i took that as he wanted them, nothing to happen to them. when they execute a warrant we are not gentwell people's possessions just the nature of how it is. he didn't want anything stratched up or damaged. when i took them, there was not media attention. i was going on the fact my father told me that his wife had left him. i was there to help him out. >> reporter: again, that is steven peterson testifying in front of the board. now the chief wants him eventually fired because he says his lack of cooperation creates, quote, lack of public trust in his role as an officer. again the hearing is going on. they're taking a 15-minute break t should wrap up within the next hour, hour and a half. drew peterson is in jail, he is

impasse on taxes. the president hosted house and senate leaders to find a common ground on a number of issues. one of the points, taxes. the president wants to end the tax cuts for the wealthy. republicans want to keep them. no compromise yet but they have been handed to a group of lawmakers who will meet with the treasury secretary. millions of out of work americans on the verge of losing benefits, congress would need to grant another extension to keep the checks flowing. lawmakers are debating the issue, some saying it is important to extend them while the economy is struggling. others look at the national debt and say the country cannot afford it. >> every member, all 435 should be forced to come to an office and spend a day watching people struggle for their benefits and talk to them and have to teal with them personally. >> 635,000 people are scheduled

in mississippi. and big storms roaming the carolinas. look at the rain totals on the coast. this is where that -- and huntsville, alabama. forth of the gulf coast. that's because the cold air is hitting the warm humid air and producing a band of showers and storms that will bren everyone the chain. one more look at the temperatures down in the mid20s and the highs today, it shows it oozing off the pig reservoir and that has the temperatures 40 below zero or did in the mountains of alaska. these are current temperatures. you can see with the winds from the northwest, we're going to stay chilly here for several more days. 25 madison, 19 in twin cities and 13 at fargo. that follows the trajectory of the air into the area with double-digit drops and wind gusts.

and producing subzero wind chills from mason city, iowa north and west. by the way, look at the cold t was raining in alaska last week. tonight it is 40 below and it is in europe here is the cold air here. this is the british isles shut down traffic around london and closed schools. there has been snow in france. and spain and portugal a lot of traffic accidents in germany with snow across poland. and that block that brings it into the north america brings is into europe. we're suffering from the warm up. winds are west at 13. humidity at 70%. dew point is 20. we have flood advisories still in effect in the last of the warm air and winter weather advisories, down wind of the great lakes, where the snows are enhanced by the moisture. look at the storms along the front edge of the air.
