fighting in springfield. same-sex couples will be able to have the same rate rights as straight couples. this afternoon the state senate approved a measure by a vote solve 22-34. this after the state house narrowly approved it last night. 20 follow through on the pledge to sign into law now that it's clear both the house and senate. >> i think it's a proud day for the people of our state. i commend every more -- member of the house of representatives and senate as well. >> reporter: many who oppose say they should not be focusing on the civil unions and should be focusing on the financial problems and economic problems. >> a policy of illinois, you can expect the same in our schools. the mothers and fathers of your districts will not be in support of this.

>> reporter: today's votes a huge victory for gay rights in illinois. >> we are thrilled that the illinois legislature has taken this step to making illinois a state that is now more equal and more fair. >> reporter: christopher clark is an attorney for the land of legal. the oldest gay and transgender rights organization. >> civil unions are not marriage and not full equality. i do think it's a step. we still have a long way to go. but it's an important step. >> reporter: despite serious opposition of illinois headed by cardinal francis george. >> truly the legislature today imposed on the state of illinois, something the people did not want. >> reporter: the director of the thomas moore society a law firm that defends traditional marriage. >> instead because of various favors being traded back and

their pockets. the officer was killed in the line of duty as he was doing his job as an evidence technician investigating a burglary. today his funeral service taking place at the catholic church on the southwest side. mayor daley, superintendent jody weis, hundreds on hand to pay their respects. steven peters and frist flisk were killed friday. his daughter explained how he went the extra mile for his family. >> my father would take any hours he could on his days off just to provide for all of the extra things that we wanted. but i would give it all back just to have one more day with my dad. >> flisk was buried at holy seplacee. timothy herring has been charged with the murder.

18-year-old denzel pittman accused of killing his girlfriend, her mother and sister. stabbed on monday. police reportedly captured a blood-soaked pittman not far from the scene. the victim's family was in court today and showed compassion. >> it's just a tragic situation. not just for our family but for his family too. because parents, when your kid is born, you raise that kid to be doctors and lawyers. but he went the wrong way. >> prosecutors say pittman attacked jay before at him home. now jerry hobbs is suing lake county official. spent five years behind bars that he killed crystal tobias and laura hobbs. police physically assaulted and

psychologically abused him until the fabricated the confession. dna cleared him. he stole money from metra then threw himself in front of one of the trains when he was found out. still he has left his widow penniless. she filed for bankruptcy protection. he was up to his ears in debt. julie unruh right now with the story. >> reporter: there's a lot to learn on this still. in court filings, barbara pagano claims she's broke. she has no cash, no savings or benefits. her husband was making good money at metra. $1million a year. he forged memos and getting extra in vacation pay. the level of debt pago know accumulated was about a million bucks. but who or what it was spent on remains a mystery. >> we were interested in learning more about the

bankruptcy filing. >> what about it? >> i was wondering if i could talk to you in person rather than shouting through the door. >> that's okay. we don't have any comment, thank you. >> reporter: barbara pagano is not ready to talk about this. before we arrived to her home, mrs. pagano remained holed up in her garage reluctant to face our camera. their home is valued at $340,000. two mortgages on it total 745,000. but there's not an ounce of equity in it. and pa that -- pagano took his own life, his wife is entitled to $500,000 in life insurance. the bankruptcy filing paints the paganos as spendthrifts.

the fight over a fallen marine's special momentos is now resolved. we first told you about this yesterday. jeanette lee winters killed in afghanistan in 2003. the family put her military records, medals and other personal effects in a storage locker. but was unable to make payments on that unit. businessman mark perco bought the items. after major criticism, he handed over the personal effects today. >> i have no ill feelings toward anybody. right now there are suggestions on what will be taken care of. thank you for keeping everything intact and preserving everything. >> took quite a while for him to turn those over. they will be displayed inside the sergeant -- let me say that. it'll be displayed inside the

farewell for a cook county board member todd stroger. wgn's lourdes duarte in the newsroom. >> reporter: they were all pretty cordial saying they didn't always agree with stroger but respected him. the biggest jab was for commissioner tony porika who wasn't reelected. >> the motion carries. >> reporter: leading the board no more for stroger. this was his final day at the

top of the cook county board. today a five minute long county resolution highlighting his work. >> express gratitude to todd stroger for his years of service to the people of cook county, illinois. >> reporter: it didn't end there. from those who loved him to those who didn't, words of encouragement for whatever's next. >> we agreed on some issues and disagreed on others. but i will say you were very strong, opinionated. >> reporter: getting an interesting compliment from a strong ally. >> you never stab a person in the back. you always do it in -- you always stab them right in the chest. today makes this the coldest december open in 27 years. and we have snow flurries winding down tonight coming back in tomorrow afternoon. we've been looking at this system friday night, saturday, saturday night. this thing is looking fairly formidable. that can be a shovellable snow. we'll keep our eyes on it. just want to show you the snow flurries coming down today. .1 of inch of snow. the first time we've had measurable snow. the high today of 26 was 30 degrees colder than december last year. isn't that something? we had a 55-degree high on this date a year ago. we don't have it tonight. temperatures are in the 20s. readings have held steady around 26. and we've got teens and upper single digit windchills. it's 26 at o'hare.

a gusty wind adds to the chill. 23 at mchenry at this hour. look at the wind gusts that accompanied the cold from gary to frankfort and here in the city. here are me wind gusts plotted in map form for you and the windchills that have resulted from them within the last hour. lots of clouds in northfield and in geneva. there were flurries in the air that dusted the ground. lot of traffic accidents out on i-65 as we had a lot of black ice. but we've got this snow moving out. and another system coming on. this thing will swipe us tomorrow afternoon and evening. see here are the snows and up to 5-6 inches down on the snow belt in michigan. there are advisories for that snow tonight. mild in the plains. a mix of sleet on the south side of that next system. these are the beginning precipitation elements with the friday night-saturday system. more on that in a moment. here's the forecast through

7:30 tomorrow. the snow bands will continue on shore. then we bring this system with thicker clouds that may flurry through the area tomorrow afternoon. but not a big deal. temperatures in the mid-20s right now. these are highs today across the region. look how that cool air is spilling off the 34% of the country covered by snow. and then covered into canada where there were highs today of only 25 below zero in parts of the yukon. a big reservoir of cold air. we'll bring a lobe of warmer air. see this in the plains? this will never make it in here. but what's going to happen as it sets up a thermal boundary, and we'll have a storm system that could set up snow starting friday night and saturday and enhance it with snow late saturday and saturday night. in to maybe early sunday morning. note the wind gust tonight with a sustained of 13 at o'hare field. and here are the lows this morning that went down to

freezing all the way down to houston, texas. look how much of the continent is cold. winter has taken on -- come on like gang busters as it has in europe. they've had the heaviest snows in november since 1965 in great britain and places. snows in france, germany, poland. there were deaths in poland due to the weather. airports shut down in london and germany and switzerland as the cold air moved in. here's the system we're watching. this thing could be quite interesting. see how the clouds are already streaming across the mountains? there are advisories and watches up in anticipation of that system. here's the little lobe of cloudiness that goes through the area tomorrow as this big storm keeps it windy tonight. this will merge with it, brings those flurries tomorrow. then this next system is emerging. it will begin to open up the gulf, sets up a big north to

south temperature differential. this is an area of lift in the atmosphere. that's what it will look like friday night and saturday. we'll get a system that will start out here on the dakotas, will track southeastward and a track of snow will come into southern minnesota and northern iowa and come into the chicago area late friday night and saturday. then plug into lake moisture, this cold northerly winds go down the lake. when you add system snow that's currently put it 3-5 inches on various model runs, you start getting some pretty good snow numbers. although it's early yet in that system's development. much can change. we've got days to watch that. tonight snow flurries, blustery and cold. temperatures in the mid-teens inland. 19 the low at o'hare.

mostly cloudy tomorrow. flurries that fade. and flurries in the afternoon that may build to snow showers in spots. high tomorrow of 33. then snow showers and partial clearing tomorrow night. low of 17. then sunshine but increasing cloudiness. the calm before the storm and we bring the snow in friday night and saturday. so quite interesting. we found that years in which we got 3 inches or snow in the first week in december go on to produce more snow than usual. they average about 47 inches. we get about 37 inches in an average winter here. another thing that's interesting we had months of warm you would think the winter would be warm. we had a long period from may until now that was above normal. >> i think in the weather dictionary that's payback. >> or just icky.

tomorrow. there you see where the cold air is coming from. it's from the north. area had chilly temperatures, as we pointed out this morning. and it will be cool again overnight. but there's the system out west that's tracking eastbound. and as that crosses the mountains, things can get mighty interesting. this is the two-day forecast of snowfall. this only begins to show the next band of snow developing to the northwest of us. that will track towards chicago. see how we sit through the orange and the blue? then the cold collapses down on us next week. boy, it is going to get chilly too. especially if we have a snow pack on the ground which it looks like we will. then we get a disturbance to move between those warm and cold air masses. saturday and sunday could pick up 13 hours of lake enhanced snow on the backside of it yielding a respectable snowfall possibly. there were the temperatures.
