judas priest is doing christmas carols -- that's breaking news. >> world turned on its ears. >> that's great. >> our seasonally warm autumn morphed into brutally cold. >> hit us like a wall. >> any relief? >> there is a little bit of temperature -- or temperature increase coming later in the week. we have another big arctic outbreak coming down. what's interesting this is one of the coldest december opens we have seen and we are looking at weather records of the top ten coldest opens in december, four have occurred since 2005 in the last five years. so even though the winters overall are warmer, except for the last couple, they are kind of brutal around here, but overall if you look at the last three decades wintsers are getting warmer and they started on a cold note and this one is doing it, too.
12:31 pm
it's cold but there is some moderation in the days ahead. the month is opened about 11 degree below normal. we used a third more heating than we did last year at this time. so we will see that -- when the fuel bills come in. it's the tenth coldest december open on record here in 140 years of weather records and coldest since 2008 around here and still the snows are blowing off the lake on the other side of the lake. but see these clouds coming on frame up stream? that's the weather system headed this way and could bring a little snow tomorrow. that's not a big deal. snows will continue to fly in michigan but with less oomph they had in recent days and then there is the cloud mass off to the north and west, this thing right out here. that's coming in tomorrow. what's happening is it's running along this thermal contrast and warmer temperatures in the plains. best weather of all in the country is in the southwest and phoenix and california. it's unseasonably cold on the other hand in florida and cold wave that's come in this weekend will plunge right back
12:32 pm
in to florida and the eastern u.s. next week. look at the cold. it's plenty of oomph left in that cold air mass and with this jet stream blowing in from the northwest, it's delivered a chunk of that cold to us. but here is what's interesting. this wind max coming off the pacific is digging into a trough and that spins up a storm system. right now you have to say the track tafstorm is favoring the southern mid west for the big snows. and most of the weather and it will start as rain and a mixture. but we could get several inches of snow here saturday night. if that thing tracks north as these things are apt to do, then we can have a lot more snow and a bitter arctic blast coming late in the weekend. went down to seven below this morning in rochelle. pontiac with zero. two in roamroville and three at kankakee in the city it was 15 at lincoln park. at wilmette and northfield and gary also temperatures basically in the low teens and it's 23 now at o'hare with a much lighter wind than we have
12:33 pm
seen in recent days. we don't have the windchill. 23 at midway. 24 at shererville and mchenry in the northwest suburbs at 21. all areas reporting light winds. but we still get some single digit windchills at lowell, indiana. and naperville and a plot of those windchills. very wibtry out there with -- wintry out there with 35% of country under snow and that includes sandwich in de kalb county and the snow going in off the lake over at sutton's bay and michigan. that's the lake-effect snow and south bend getting flurries as well. well, the forecast is for those lake snows to break down with time over here in michigan. this is a short term forecast. you will see how the banding kind of becomes less well defined and finally just falls apart. but we are watching the weather system up to the northwest and it melee down this raw computer it melee down blaps
12:34 pm
light winds are replaced by the strong southwest winds and little area of snow that comes in later tomorrow and this could mix up with some ice pellets and maybe even a drizzle indicated by the greens and pinks there. but here is the next system. this is the main event. spinning up here. we are into saturday morning. see how it starts as rain in iowa and a big arctic blast coming in from the northwest. that hits on sunday and it should make it a cold windy bears game. this is the accumulated snow forecast there and we will show you how that snow lays out. here is the lake-effect snows breaking down. we cloud over during the morning hours tomorrow. bring a little snow in here tomorrow evening and that's about eight in the evening and then we keep those little flurries and maybe again a half an inch to an inch of snow with little ice pellet, freezing drizzle mixed in and this is into friday with little precip and more coming in from the
12:35 pm
west out there. we will show you more on that weekend system because there is a lot of interest in that. that is deepening as it tracks across the southern mid west right now if you interpret -- or take the raw model precipitation forecast, we have several inches of snow on the way out of that. but if that were to track north we would get a lot more. so is that system to watch. a lot of wind on the back side. more than two ten degrees below normal for a third consecutive day. partly cloudy but much less windy so we don't have the windchill to worry about. high of just 23. then scattered clouds, cold tonight. four inland. 18 in chicago's loop and 12 at o'hare. tomorrow increasing cloudiness. stronger winds so the windchill is back and little light snow toward evening and maybe mixed ice pellets and wraps up to an inch at night. cloudy and breezy on friday. a high breaking above freezing. so there is that little warm up
