this is what we know at this hour. the 11-year-old was treated and released from comer children's hospital. she is now home with family who, of course, are overjoyed because they feared the worse. >> huge relief for you guys? >> thanks to the whole public for all the help and support you did. thank you and god bless and happy holidays. my daughter is safe. >> the 11-year-old's father and mother are rejoicing after three agonizing days she was found alive early today in this woodlawn apartment. chicago police took a man into custody said to be in his late 50s. but no word of any charges. exactly how the 11-year-old ended up in the apartment is an unanswered question. but a community activist who helped find the girl says that the trouble started on the chicago transit authority green line on saturday after she fell asleep and found herself at the end of the line at 63 and

cottage grove. >> she woke up on the 63rd and cottage. that's when he asked her did she need bus fare and then from there she said he said he was going to go to the gas station and get some bus fare but they wind up at his apartment. >> now andrew holmes with no guns, no violence says that he traced a phone number to the woodlawn apartment. the family had called him and asked him to help track down the girl. he was able to lead police to the girl in the woodlawn neighborhood who was immediately taken to the hospital. at comer children's hospital, julian crews, wgn news. new security video shows how a tan saglan customer may have killed the suspected honey bee gunman. gary amaya was shot and killed with his own gun inside an l.a. tan place in orland park saturday night. this video shows amaya entering the store and holding up the employee with a gun.

and then customer jason mcdaniel enters the store and here he is confronted by amaya and told to stand behind the counter with the clerk. this is amaya is getting ready. see the rope to tie up mcdaniel. he sets down the gun and mcdaniel rushes amaya. mcdaniel shoots and kills amaya during a fight over that gun. ballistics tests confirm that amaya's gun was used by the person known as the honey bee gunman who killed a man and wounded two others back in october. new charges in the kidnapping and murder of a man on chicago's west side. 36-year-old jeremy borders and darnell stokes are charged with killing the man. the border, stokes and another man, 34-year-old keith watts are also charged with kidnapping. police say the men approached the man as he worked on rehabbing a building and pretended they wanted to rent it. he was later found dead inside a vehicle in the garage. he had been badly beaten and stabbed. chicago police officer and six other people were injured

in a car accident on the south side. this happened just before 8:00 this morning at 76 and stony island. the officer was rushed to northwestern memorial with nonlife-threatening injuries and as for the other victims, one was in serious to critical condition, three others in fair to serious condition and three in good condition. there is an investigation underway into what caused the accident. a woman who rents rahm emanuel's chicago home is scheduled to testify today at a hearing to determine whether emanuel should be on the mayoral ballot. emanuel endured 12 hours of questioning yesterday from attorneys and chicagoans who say he is not eligible to run for mayor. emanuel spent nearly two years in washington as president obama's chief of staff. some claim that took away his chicago residency. and emanuel says his focus is the mayor's race. >> most important thing and what i think is my takeaway is the city of chicago, its future is worth fighting for. emanuel's tenant lori

halpen is scheduled to testify today. halpen and her husband made headlines when they refused the request no break the lease on the house so emanuel could move back in. rob halpen was a candidate for mayor but with drew last week for legal and financial reasons. getting back to hawm e-- rahm emanuel he isy head in the mayoral raid rice now. a new poll shows he has the support of 32% of voters. but 30% are still undecided. former chicago public schools chief gary chico has 9% and danny davis has. james meeks has 7% and carol moseley braun with 6%. city clerk miguel del valle trails 3% and burris has 2 percent. an autopsy will be conducted today on springfield mayor tim davlan who was found dead yesterday. davlan was 53. he had served as mayor of springfield since 2003. police found davlan's body in his home yesterday shortly before he was scheduled to appear in a court hearing in an

estate case. investigators have not commented on reports that he died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound. dasklan was also facing a federal tax lien of $90,000 for unpaid income taxes. full body scanners have been making headlines around the country. the latest airport to get one of the controversial security devices is chicago's midway airport. wgn's muriel clair is live at midway with more on that story. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. air travelers don't have to submit to the full body scanners. they can always opt for the full body pat down. >> i think i will go for the body scanner as opposed to what the search is. >> midway will be one of 57 airports around the country using the full body scanners. tsa, transportation security administration unveiled a new scanning machine at midway this morning. the machines are designed to

detect hidden nonmetallic weapons and explosives. >> my parents were on the egyptian airliner that was taken down the fall of 1999. don't want anyone to go through that. if anything, keep us safe, i'm for it. >> the machine provides a screener with a detailed view of the body. some travelers have complained that the machines are intrusive. and may because of the x-ray- type pictures they take be a health hazard. >> tsa has put a number of steps in place to make sure the privacy of passengers. the first step is passenger never comes in contact with the officer who sees image. that image is viewed remotely. each image has a privacy algo rhythm applied to make the passenger unidentifiable. the passenger had a 2340 access and can't get into the room and in addition the images can't be stored or printed and can't be transmitted and not network computers and can't be hacked into. >> i have no objection at all

to it. >> reporter: as to health concerns, tsa officials say that the machine uses no radiation and the electromagnetic waves they say are harmless. ed a midway, muriel clair, wgn news. the state owes chicago area mass transit agency nearly $300 million. the cta, metra and pace need that money to finish the year with balanced budgets which is required by law. if the agencies don't get the money, that may lead to fare hikes and service cuts next year. the agencies have borrowed money from banks to try to hold themselves over until the state pays up. on top of the $300 million, the state owes $124 million for 2011. starting today, amtrak riders can take unloaded guns along inside their luggage but only on trains that offer checked baggage. passengers also have to register their guns 24 hours before traveling. the unloaded guns have to be locked in an approved container

before pulling out his gun and ordering everyone but board members to leave the room. duke fired several shots but didn't wound anybody. spray painted this v on the wall. police say he had been planning the attack for sometime. one board member tried to knock the gun out of duke hfs hand with her purse. duke was wounded by a security guard and took his own life. today, police say the security guard's quick thinking saved lives. >> mr. duke had come here with a purpose. with extra magazines and extra rounds to carry out this deed he het in play. and so by mike jones being able to engage him immediately and for all that to a quick conclusion is what saved lives. board members say duke was angry because his wife had been fired from the school system. police say it wasn't clear whether she had been let go or had resigned. but here is the thing, duke and his wife were estranged. she is living with her mother nearby. the tax cut package will be unfor a vote in the u.s. senate

today. the bill will extend the current tax rate for all income bracket for two years and renew ujobless benefits and cut social security tax for one year. legislation is expected to pass and then head to the house. house democrats are angry over the tax cut extension for wealthier americans but the bill is expected to be approved. house lawmakers are going to vote whether to repeal the don't ask don't tell polt ois. democrats say say the military is violating a gay person's civil rights. but republicans say lifting the policy will hurt the military's morale and readiness. if the repeal passes, that will put pressure on the senate to approve it as well. the democratic controlled house and senate want to get it done before the gop takes over the house. a new gallup poll shows americans job approval rating of congress is at its lowest point in more than 30 years. only 13% of americans approve of the job congress is doing.

since november's mid-term elections, 42% of democrats now disapprove of lawmakers. 15% of republicans gave congress its lowest marks. despite the historic lowes, the prospects for recovery in approval ratings a-- appear good. lawmakers get a boost of ratings when control of congress changes hands which will happen in january. president obama has signed a bill aimed at keeping asian carp from infesting the great lakes. the lawmics it illegal to import big head carp into the united states or take it across state line's big head and silver carp already have been found in some chicago area rivers. wildlife experts say the carp could destroy native fish species by competing for food. exceptions to the ban, for scientific, medical or educational purposes would require a permit. >> chicago's having a hard time covering their heating bills during the cold months may callfy for help. nancy loo joining us live from the west side with more on the

story. >> reporter: as you can tell, today's cold is bearable, but you know, chicago's winter has just begun. new federal money is now available for families in need of help for paying those heating bigs and -- bills and there is help for finding that help. to outline what's available and 20 whom, local government officials met with senior citizens in the austin neighborhood this morning citing that only 35% of people who qualify for heating assistance seek it. just this week the federal government allocated $45 million for such use in cook county and officials with the community and economic development association are urging families in need to apply now because the money may not be there for long. >> that should last a few more months for us. hopefully. you know, we were hoping that there will be additional dollars allocated federally as well. but right now we do have plenty of money to get us -- we were hoping it will last through

hopes and uprooted trees. oregon's governor said the state will provide help to residents and asked other communities to be mindful of the upcoming holiday season and contribute to the affected families. >> a lot of damage there in a place where it doesn't narmally happen. >> and in december no less. they had record high temperatures the day before in portland and seattle. they were up well into the 50s. seattle has had seven inches of rain in some areas nearby with trees coming down because the soils are wet. think of the pacific northwest as being wet and stormy. but it's quite wet and so much so that we have trees down and had some thunderstorm wind damage in seattle a couple days ago. this is record warmth has occurred in the west. but in our area it was cold. in fact last night was the coldest night since january 10 around here. we went to two above at o'hare airport. it was colder inland. the vapor trails coming off the smoke stacks. high clouds here. but we have a weather system coming in from the west.

this is the one that came barreling in with 180-mile-per- hour jet stream. the storm center itself has gone into british columbia, now alberta and will start redeveloping southward and then swing across the mid west bringing us some snow starting toward morning. probably not until then. there is about an inch of snow, half an inch to an inch and this band out in iowa there were snows earlier downstate and you can see the mix precipitation where the warmer air is running up and over the cool air. corridor of weather advisories including winter weather advisories west of us. this winter storm warning and winter storm watch and that is the area where the snow will be most pronounced. but the lake snows are over after 33 inches in parts of the snow belt in indiana as we mentioned the last couple of shows around here. here is what's happening. our low pressure developing south. here in the texas panhandle. oklahoma panhandle area. our rpm model brings it

eastward but notice by evening rush-hour and late into the rush-hour it's still partly cloudy here. so you have no problems this afternoon or for this evening. clouds will spread in tonight. snow will be in to the south and west suburbs and that's just west of the main viewing area here at wgn. out in the wgn america area and bloomington and peoria and quad cities it reaches the city we think about 5:00 in the morning and then snows in the morning rush-hour as you see there and get these patches of light snow off and on during the day tomorrow. this is not the system that we had over the weekend with wind and covering just miltple states with all kinds of catilousmic winter weather. a far more modest weather system but will lay down a corridor of snow that runs from about devils lake, north dakota and fargo through rochester through cedar rapids, quad cities, peoria, champagne and indianapolis. and including the louisville area. and this is a look, real close at how our models are handling

it. partly cloudy at 9:50 this evening and turns overcast by midnight and just beyond and then here is the snow area coming up so that by 9:00 tomorrow morning it's snowing in the area. and as i say, it will be off and on during the day. right up through about midday tomorrow. the models lay down about a quarter inch kenosha, half an inch at waukegan. three-quarters of an inch at o'hare and amounts build as you head to joliet, morris, rochelle according to this model's rendering. in this day and age we look at all kinds of things and we can look at as many as 30 models and try to grab every piece of information you can. we got about one to one and a half inches for the full extent of this weather system in the city and then that builds over to three inches to the west of us. what's happening here is we got some warm air. look at 69 at this hour in dallas while it's cold up here, this is where the snow pack is. we were at 21, 8 green bay. 8 international falls.

that corridor there, that's what weather people call a bare clinic zone. thunderstormle convergent zone. we have warmed up and you will notice without the windchill today it really feels a lot warmer. there are no winds at o'hare at this hour and winds will be light right on into tomorrow and start picking up a little bit at that time. humidity 53%. the jet stream, there is that little speed max, the nose which creates lift. by late tonight there is a speed max here and lift right on the back side of this batch of strong winds lift on the front side. that's why the snow area will come together. and then we have to trap this cool air in this area for a couple days. in fact, it goes into next week. burlington, wisconsin, went down to ten below at our weather bug site there. hebron and indiana minus 7. rochelle minus 6. shygor grove, chesterton, wheatfield and joliet all below zero. but it was 21, it is 21 now with that calm wind at o'hare.

and at midway it's 21 as well. no wind at midway at this hour. very calm and that's why you are seeing that little haze hanging over the area. there is a little temperature inversion as warmer air runs up and over this cold air mass and that's the process that will contribute to some snow. this afternoon, no snow. sunshine and high clouds. much calmer, less wind. no windchill. few degrees milder than in recent days. high of 25 and light variable winds expected in the area. for tonight, temperature readings will stay warmer. 20, clouding over later tonight. snow begins toward morning. low temperatures 20 overnight. light east, northeast winds at 2 to 8. occasional snow and one to three inches. the trend on this will be for lighter amounts north and heavier amounts south and west. high temperature about 31. invariably cloudy, breezy and cooler with flurries on friday and friday's high in the 20s once again. so that's a little more --

cribs are outlawed in the united states. consumer product safety commission has voted to ban the manufacturer sale and resale of the cribs. they have been blamed for deaths of more than 30 infants and toddlers in the past decade. rails on the cribs move up and down making it easier for parents to lift the child from the crib but the rails can detach. trap a baby and lead to suffocation or strangulation. living an active lifestyle from young adulthood into middle age can help ward off those extra pounds and inches that start to appear as we grow older. study the american journal medical association followed 3600 adults over 20 years. most active men put on about six fewer pounds and saw their

>> i did. >> 12, that's interesting. >> i probably will tomorrow. >> i know. >> in 15 minutes. >> i will tell you what you will know is that there is a little snow to brush off the car tomorrow. look at this, we have some high clouds filtering the clouds but the snow is out in iowa and there is half an inch to an inch as that band develops out to the west of us. it's 21 in chicago right now. at 21 at midway. both o'hare and midway have 21, 26 geneva. it's 22 at mchenry at this hour and there you see the windchills which really are nothing to write home about because it's a gorgeous day. we don't have the wind blowing. this low pressure will manage to come into the midway without a lot of wind. but you see, its clouds are thickening up and snow will go toward morning and snow off and on during the day tomorrow and thinking is there is about one to three inches of snow out of this with perhaps lighter amounts north and heavier amounts to the southwest and there you see we work into
