laura lynn ryan's health has been apparent for each court appearance. she was already diagnosed with a terminal lung disease and given one to two years to live. today she was hospitalized where doctors determined her prognosis is much more grave than previously thought. >> she's got a 7 centimeter tumor in her left lung that did not show up just months ago in the scans. which indicates it's a fast- growing aggressive tumor. >> reporter: so aggressive george ryan's attorney filed an emergency motion today imploring federal judge to release ryan to spend his wife's final days by her side. mrs. ryan not only has a tumor in her lung but lesions on her liver and likely cancer in her spine. given her frail condition they doubt she will be able to

tolerate chemotherapy without any benefit. three to six months at best. today's motion is the second -- time ryan's attorneys has asked for his release. they say with the new diagnosis, things need to move very quickly. >> it's clear now that her last days are coming much more quickly. if we're wrong on the law and he has to go back in and finish his sentence, he's willing to do that. >> reporter: thompson admits inmates usually don't get released because of ill relatives. but his case is different because the supreme court narrowed the focus of the services law. that should undo the racketeering and mail fraud. he says the judge will take time to motion on that. the residency hearing of rahm emanuel continued over

chicago police tonight questioning the man taken into custody after a child missing since saturday was found in his apartment. the man is said to be in his late 50s. his apartment is near university in the wood lawn neighborhood. the girl was found there this morning and taken to the comer children's hospital.

her path. his victim: crystal. then only 11 years old. >> he was speaking to me. so i didn't know what to say. so i looked at his inside of the car. he had his pants down. so i started walking away. >> reporter: that's when he slams it in reverse and takes off after her. in a twist of fate, a neighbor's garage door opens and he takes off. >> i was kind of shocked because seeing my daughter yelling and screaming, running asking for help. >> reporter: now it's up to crystal to paint a picture of a predator roaming the streets. a month later, he strikes again. same car, same man. he picks out a 12-year-old girl walking home from school. after she screams, he vanishes again. >> he look at child abductions by a stranger and found this is a crime that went unpunished. >> reporter: david jackson and

gary marks analyzed two and a half years of police reports looking at allegations of attempted abductions in chicago and cook county. out of the 530 cases they found just seven men ended up in prison or jail. >> why are so few caught and then eventually leading to jail time? >> police tell us this is an incredibly hard crime to investigate. often you're talking about an event that happens in the blink of an eye to a young person who may or may not have the wherewithal to remember a license plate number or communicate to the police what they do recollect. >> reporter: children were the most vulnerable going to and from school. between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning and 2:00 and 5:00 in the everyone. >> a guy driving around in his car, most of these individuals were in their own neighborhoods. we sort of thought you would go to another neighborhood where you wouldn't be recognized. >> reporter: that's where chicago police spotted the red

nissan again cruising around a neighborhood school. the officer got the plate, made the match. you're about to meet that man. >> even i know i have a lot of good qualities. i have done a lot of good things, it's just i kind of overshadowed everything i've done by the couple bad things that i did do. so. >> reporter: 29-year-old jeffrey jewet grew up in the neighborhood as a star in football and hockey. all that changed in college. he was working in the park district. >> our first contact with jeffrey was in july of 2003 and involved a young girl -- 5-year- old girl. >> reporter: according to the police report, he invited the girl into a storage room. once inside, he told her to open her mouth and close her eyes. >> he was unzipping a zipper. she ran out of there and reported the incident and he was arrested at that time for

disorderly conduct. that was the only charge that we could put on him at that time. >> why is that? >> basically just reviewing the facts of the case, the fact he had not actually exposed himself. >> reporter: the next time, he was caught fondling himself in front of a 10-year-old girl riding a scooter. this time he ended up with 12 months court supervision and treatment. >> did i feel guilty? yeah. but at that point it was done. you know? that's exactly what you have to fight against. >> what was the justification to do it? do you remember? >> there's a million different reasons. like, you know, i'm just exposing myself. you know what i mean? you know, i'm not putting my hands on anybody. i'm not hurting anybody. i mean, obviously it's not true. >> reporter: it took five years and two brave little girls to

identify him in a police lineup and finally put him behind bars if only briefly. >> the day you had to go and look at the police lineup, what was that like? >> horrible for crystal. >> are you able to forget that? >> i still remember it. yeah. sometimes i have nightmares. and can't sleep. just stay up. >> reporter: no wonder it's a scary scene to live over and over. >> if the impulse or the inappropriate thought process is always something you're fighting, how do you know it's not going to happen again? that's the question. >> to be honest with you, it's kind of hard to say. but, like, the potential i guess is always there. and it's something you have to realize.

president obama and others are trying to repeal the policy. their concern is republicans take control of the house next year and gaining in the senate would push it to the back burner. the obama administration suing bp exploration and -- in the largest spill in history. disregarded when the explosion killed 11 people last april. the government estimates 200 million gallons spilled from the well. it's asking for liability without limits under the oil pollution act. also seeking penalties with the clean air act. it will cooperate with ongoing investigation. when you pack your bags for a trip on amtrak, you can once again pack guns and ammo. passengers must register on the trains. you can't take them as carry ons in the passenger areas. up to call 24 hours in advance to register them. the guns must be unloaded and locked in the approved

this is kind of tough to look at. yesterday's shooting at a florida school board meeting, not a random act. clay duke was at that meeting complaining about taxes an his wife being fired. he pulled a gun and told everyone to leave the room expect the board members. duke was hit four times then turned the gun on himself and killed himself. >> when he turned around with that gun, you could see in his eyes that he just had that look. you knew that he had something in mind-going to do and it was not going to end well. >> amazingly no one else was hurt in that room. it's a miracle that bystanders weren't killed. dropside cribs now banned. ban the sale and resale of the cribs which has been blamed for

the deaths of 30 toddlers. they move up and down making it easier to lift the child from the crib. but the rails can trap a baby, lead to strangulation or suffocation. if money is tight and it is for many, there's hope for people struggling to pay heating bill. illinois has $136 million available for heating assistance. $45million is available for cook county alone. but officials are saying just 35% of people qualifying for that help will ask for it. those officials are asking for people to apply for the money before they run out. >> that should last a few more months for us hopefully. we're always hoping federally as well. right now we have plenty of money to gets -- we're hoping it will last through march. >> you have to have a monthly income of less than $1354.

hours in many areas. dusting to 2 inches is what the thinking is at this. we'll give you a complete rundown on where the snow is. winter weather advisories are in effect west. that's where the heaviest snow is going to be coming down with this particular system. this storm was actually quite a block buster and a chain of systems that will enter by ways of the pacific and drop southward and cruise to the east coast where it will explode off the east coast. any one of these we have to watch. the next comes monday. it tracks farther north, you get more snow out of it. right now there's dry air. there are winter weather advisories except where the warnings are out and these are the red areas. there is growth in this storm. it takes moisture from the gulf of mexico to the south of us. it has produced 11 inches of

snow in north dakota. munich north dakota had 8 inches. mason city had about .9 of an inch. let's get a feel for when this is supposed to be where. this is midnight tonight. see how the dry air in the low levels is impeding the progress up to that point. we're expecting to saturate the column and get to the surface during the rush hour. then we'll have light snow or snow from time to time during the day tomorrow. there's just a hint of a little lake moisture getting into this. in fact you see that area there. this is not a big lake effect setup. the winds aren't right for that. the highest area is to the south and west of us. peoria perhaps 4-5 inches of snow when we say heavy. this is a close up look at the rpm model. see where the snow moves to aurora and joliet by about

3:00. then some drier air comes in and impedes its progress. and then they do come in at 7:50, 8:00 tomorrow morning. then it snows from time to time during the morning hours and the rest of the day. how much may come down? well, it's not a great deal as you'll see in a moment. just enough to make things kind of interesting. this is just the next 24 hours from our in house model. they're saying waukegan may see lake effects snow. here's another model just to show you. this is what we look at in these storm situations all the time back in the weather office. variations. this model says maybe .5-inch of snow. so you get an idea of what the range is on this system. none of these numbers big. there's quite a line between our cold air and the warm air that sent oklahoma city to 64

and denver to 53. and it's along that boundary emanating from this very cold air up to the north. it will be bringing these systems in from time to time. we're 10 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago with a southwest wind coming off the lake a little bit at about 6 miles per hour. this is the 10th coldest december on record around here. and the coldest since 2005. continues in that vain. we have not had a 40-degree temperature and december has not done that since 2005. december continues its cold ways. clouds thicken tonight and some light snow in the predawn hours. low of 18. some of the lows this morning that led to the icicles. tomorrow cloudy and periods of light snow. a dusting in most parts of the city. if you go farther west toward peoria, you may end up with 3-5 inches of snow.

cold air in that lope right over the united states. and this pattern is supposed to keep going for a while. so any warm-ups that we get are modest. you see the coldest air there in western canada right now. but quite amazing. and pattern that has shown up time and again the last couple of winters. light snow in here by morning in many areas. and picking up during the day from time to time. we expect a dusting to 2 inches in most areas. there will be more if you're heading toward champaign where it's snowing now. or peoria or bloomington or areas to the west of us. even our western counties will get more snow than in the city. they'll be down the flurries friday. and saturday looks cloudy with flurries and breezy conditions intensifying the cold a bit. then sunday partly sunny with snow starting at night and maybe again monday. another lope of moderately cold air then comes in. and so it goes.
