is it the third day of testimony in the residency hearing of chicago mayoral candidate rahm emanuel. several people are trying to get emanuel kicked off the ballot. they say he has not been back in the city long enough to qualify as a candidate. good afternoon, i'm steve sanders. >> i'm allison payne. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america. wgn's julian crews is live at the chicago board of elections with the latest on the hearing. >> reporter: good afternoon. just moments ago a request from one of the objectors to take a field trip up to rahm emanuel's

ravenswood home to check the crawl space to look for the boxes. more on that in a moment. but also earlier today startling information regarding rob halpen. the man who rented emanuel's home. according to rahm's real estate agent, rob halpen's lawyer called him in september with a proposal. >> his client was difficult and hot headed. i remember that because i thought it was an unusual thing to say and he said he was talking to a lawyer names -- and talking to the press and worried he is in breach of his lisa agreement and suggested to me that mr. halpen was looking for $100,000 to leave the house early. >> paul leavy says he was the go between as rahm emanuel tried to negotiate an early exit for the people leasing his ravenswood home. leavy says he relayed to emanuel the request for $100,000 from halpen's lawyer to vacate the north side home

early so emanuel's family could move back in. >> i called rahm. rahm said that's ridiculous. i'm not going to do that. and we discussed offering him $5,000 a month for every month he moved out prior to the termination of his lease. >> reporter: i reached by telephone rob halpen said the report about the $100,000 is inaccurate. not offering any other details before he hung up. he said he was driving his car and could not talk at this moment in time. now it's difficult to gauge this morning the feeling was that perhaps one maybe two days left of testimony but just a short while ago as we reported an objector making a request asking that they can go up to the north side home. the ravenswood home where the personal belongings of rahm

emanuel's family are said to be stored in crawl space. rahm emanuel pointed to those as evidence that he and his family planned to come back to chicago all along. julian crews, wgn news. thank you for that report. authorities are holding a news conference this afternoon about the case involving the man suspected of being the honey bee gunman. gary amaya was shot and killed last weekend during the attempted rob reef an orland park tanning salon. ballistics tests later matched his gun to the weapon used in the honey bee shootings near the illinois/indiana border last fall. a woman who encountered amaya tells the "sun-times" he forced her into his truck, held a gun to her head and pulled out handcuffs. she says i knew then if i let him handcuff me like he wanted to, i would be dead. >> officials in la salle county have suspended search for a missing woman. tanya shannon disappeared 11 days ago after a car crash that killed her husband. authorities believe the 40-year-

old mother of four survived and stumbled awaism crews used everything from helicopter to search dogs but have come up empty couple was on their way home from a holiday party when the accident happened. parents of a college freshman who killed herself want more answers about notre dame's investigation into their daughter's claims of sexual assault. elizabeth seeberg committed suicide in september a week after she accused a university of notre dame football player of sexually assaulting her. her parents are speaking pushlicly for the first time because the university hinted it may not give them access to records related to their daughter's accusations. the seeberg's say campus police conducted a supervision investigation and questioned why it took two weeks to question the football player. notre dame has refused to comment on the investigation and the football player is still on the team. three to six months to live. that's what doctors of former governor george ryan's wife are say being her prognosis. 76-year-old laura lynn ryan had already been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and had

been given one to two years to live. however, doctors found a mass in her lungs and lesions on her liver and spine this week. george ryan's attorneys filed an emergency motion yesterday asking the judge to release him so he can be by his wife's side. the judge is already considering another motion to overturn part of his 2006 corruption conviction. an hour from now u.s. attorney patrick fitzgerald and others will brief reporters about what's believed to be the largest marijuana seizure ever in the chicago area. nearly 11 tons of marijuana were packed inside six railroad cars from mexico that arrived at a south suburban warehouse. search suspects were arrested on federal drug conspiracy charges. they are all scheduled to be before a federal magistrate today. earlier this week we told you about a little girl's selfless act to make sure her mom received a new coat this christmas. as it turned out, her wish has sparked overwhelming generosity. wgn's nancy loo is live in the

little girl's school on the southwest side and nancy, i understand the donations are pouring in. >> oh, indeed they have. and it's been practically nonstop. but those donations today, here at the daily academy were presented to the family of a particular 12-year-old. and altruistic girl with a hard working single mom. the sixth grader whose letter to santa sought nothing for herself and only a coat for her mother got her wish this morning and then some. and anita shaw was clearly grateful and proud mother. >> i'm so happy. i'm happy. i can't explain. i appreciate everything, everybody done for me. >> the point resulted from the good will of wgn viewers in chicago and throughout the country. all were touched by last week's tear filled and heart felt wish of 12-year-old latris christian here on wgn news. that i want to give my

president obama spoke during the last hour about the war in afghanistan. he says it's because of 9-11 and the threat of terror to the u.s. that we are there. we were focus on disrupting, dismantling and defeating al qaeda in afghanistan and pakistan and for preventing its capacity to threaten america and our allies

in the future. i can report that thanks to the extraordinary service of our troops and civilians on the ground, we are on track to achieve our golds. >> reremark came as new gosm review of the situation showed that the president's decision to expand the war has diminished al qaeda's power in afghanistan. news means u.s. troops will start leaving the country in july. just as president obama promised a year ago. while there has been progress in afghanistan, the president added that progress isn't coming fast enough in pakistan. al qaeda may be planning suicide attacks in the united states and europe over the christmas holiday season. a u.s. official says iraqi authorities learned about the alleged plans from captured insurgence. american officials says reported threat is being taken seriously even though there is no intelligence indicating a specific or credible threat against the u.s. the official says u.s. remains vigilant during the holidays in light of what happened last christmas when a man tried to blow up a

plane over detroit. that man was the underwear bomber and he has been hit with more charges. the new indictment accuses 24- year-old man of conspiracy to commit terrorism. he is accused of conspiring to kill nearly 300 people aboard a northwest airlines flight. he hid the bomb in his underrer with but was stopped by passengers when he tried to set it off. legal experts say these new charges may mean prosecutors are getting ready to indict people overseas. wikileaks founder was granted bail by a british court today. he was arrested and held without bail a week ago in sweden for sex crime charges. but the judge rejected the appeal from prosecutors. he will have to return to court in january to determine whether or not he will be extradited to sweden. upon arrest, his organization released at least a dozen more senttive information documents. assang will be closely monitored by authorities while he awaits his next court hearing. u.s. house is expected to vote this afternoon on the tax

package negotiated by president obama and the republicans. yesterday, the senate overwhelmingly approved package ever tax cut extensions, unemployment benefit, renewals and other provisions. president obama is urging house members to do the same so he can sign the bill quickly. before that the house will vote on imposing a higher estate tax and what's included in the compromise bill. if that passes, the bill have to go back to the senate. on-line offer that navy pier blaming for thousands of dollars of lost revenue. plus, nothing to smile about. the new warning about mercury levels in dental fillings. and later in lunch break, holiday cooking while cutting down on the calories. we are learning how to substitute honey for sugar and cooking.

business headlines. home builders broke ground on more homes last month and that's the first time we saw that in three months. and while it's more than what economists expected, it's still an industry that is struggling to recover. and fed ex shipping some earnings news to investors today. fedex which is seen as barometer for the u.s. economy reported lower than expected second quarter earnings but said holiday volumes are better than expected and boosted its full year forecast. over at facebook which boasts 500 million users worldwide is all about salesmanship this year and in fact facebook likely to generate sales this year totaling about $2 billion. three people familiar with the matter tell bloomberg news revenue will more than double from 2009. facebook growth is also attracting investor interest. the company has valuation about $43 billion. just in case you are wondering. and lastly if you are both an

more legal problems for the obama administration health care plan. the american center for law and justice has filed its own federal whrawset challenging the plan. the group is also coming out in support of other states that have filed suits of thaish own. aclj is coming out in support of other states as i said. calling it unconstitutional to require people to purchase health insurance. the obama administration plans to challenge the suit. >> well done -- a hospital is getting a new owner. >> and should you expect any

changes to your cobra planet coming year? here with more or joining with us more is "chicago tribune" health reporter bruce jabson. bruce, good afternoon. let's start with the hospital that's changing ownership that was once a nonprofit now being taken over by a private company? will there be big changes there for the people who use that hospital? >> so far they are say nothing. holy cross hospital -- the management team down there could not make a go of it? they were talking about closing this hospital. and so they have -- they are negotiating a deal with vanguard health systems which has been around. vanguard has purchased a lot of distressed hospitals westlake hospital and mel rose park and west suburban and oak park. they own a hospital, mcneil and berwyn and they own the majority of weiss memorial which is used to be owned by the university of chicago on the north side and basically what's happening here is you will see more and more and these independent hospitals like holy cross, they can't

make a go of it. if you are part of a larger system they can buy supplies in bulk they have more clout when they deal with health insurance companies. so i think if they are hooked into a larger system, they will be able to continue to provide service in the community. the ceo says that this will preserve hundreds of jobs. i bet that has yet to be determined. don't know that when you say that. but it's still going to remain a health facility in the community which i'm sure that the community is appreciative of that. >> are there ever any advantages to patients or customers of hospital when we see a merger like this when a not for profit is taken over for a for profit corporation? >> right off the bat in this case they are going to maintain services. now, a lot of people would say that, okay, well, this has been owned by it sisters of st. kashmir. it will be a nonprofit. it has brch a nonprofit. it will be a for profit and

contain property taxes and that will be a benefit to the community. some people say do the for profit generally have the same mission to the community. they aren't from here. the company is based in nashville. that's always a concern. but the catholic church gets involved with this here because the bishop has -- would have to sign off on it and they have indicated that they work with vanguard before and they believe that they like what they have seen. >> before we let you ge let's talk about cobra and can people expect changes to their cobra coverage because of the new health care plan. >> so many americans are going on cobra. cobra is of course if you lose your job as 9 to 10% of americans have, you can keep your health plan. the problem is that the employer no longer is helping to pay for so it will cost you $1,100 a month or more to keep that for your family.

now, there is no change in the health reform. cobra will be available but by 2014, of course, you will have subsidies to buy. health insurance coverage. now cobra will require people to maintain your coverage. you won't be able to be dropped if you have a preexisting condition. one thing that people should know is they might be able to get a better deal if they go out and try to buy something on their own. if the health insurance company picks it up because cobra is so expensive and they aren't going to get relief from this until in the next three years when health reform kicks in. >> like you mentioned in the article it can be up to $1,000 a month for a familiar three buy cobra coverage. >> and as a matter of fact, people drop it or don't take it because they say that's too expensive. but one thing they should do is check to see what else is out there because you can probably get a less expense of deal. it might have a higher copay but you would clearly be getting something less expensive than cobra coverage. >> bruce, thank you so much.

tom tum joins us now. i was pleasantly spliced. >> we didn't expect a lot here. it did occur out west and it was interesting on my facebook page some folks wrote in and said if you want the snow, we got it. come out west and pick it up. we will show you where it happened. we did think it would be snow for the morning rush-hour and a little bit -- what happened is we had dry air in the lower

atmosphere. it's difficult to -- these clouds have snow in them. radar is detecting it all morning. as the snow fallen into the dry air, it evaporated away. we were starting to saturate the atmosphere a bit so we will have spells of light snow this afternoon. this is not going to amount to much. this has been advertised as a modest system. no wind with it to speak of. biggest totals are western illinois and eastern iowa. that quad cities area seen about 4 to 6 inches of snow and just a patchy light snow expected this afternoon. still some lingering weather advisories to the west of us but the emphasis has shifted to the main event with this system. heavier snows and freezing rain and ice that's going on from kentucky eastward. and new mexico in the thick of things in terms of precipitation as well. here is our little system. this thing is streaking eastward but there is upper air energy left behind it and that's supporting this little snow area. we are up to the this evening in this animated forecast. then one of these broad low

pressures that's developing and this will bring a stronger northwest wind in and re- enforce the cold to some extent the next couple of days and it's conceivable there will be lake snow on the other side of the lake but nothing on the order of what we have seen. a bigger storm out to the west. models getting excited about that toward monday here. late monday, monday night. but that's a long way off and we will keep watching that. here is the snow area and you can see the ice. but there are some stronger returns coming in on the radar and these snows do seem to have a capability to reach the ground because our models have been advertising atmosphere of saturating a little bit with moisture so we will get the flurries down to the surface. heavier snow will occur in that area. here is what the systems produce. parts of north dakota have seen 11 inches of snow. stark weather north dakota at ten and a half but closer to hoamg. ix in iowa. rock island at 5.1-inches. then benton iowa 4-point. cedar rapids 4. the bloomington normal area where visibility for a time last night were down

half a mile getting in on the snow, too. again, little lingering snow. but late tonight these clouds will begin to break up. snows will move out of the area and we ought to have a partly sunny, chilly day tomorrow. where is the snow now? here is a close look at some of the elements coming eastward a little wave imbedded in these. again, this is -- don't expect to be shoving because i think we are still talking dusting something on that line. here where is the snow is to be according to our model. you can see some areas particularly up north miss out on a lot of this all together and it will be quite patchy. we were up to 8:00 on our rpm model forecast. here is 10:00 this evening and then stuff pulls out and clouds begin to break up and the temperatures will drop. we will have a little bit of new snow and it really cools off over that. how much snow is coming? this is the estimate from our in-house model here. about a tenth of an inch in waukegan. half an inch midway. and inch in aurora if that. about an inch in de kalb.

not a big deal here and here is a second opinion. yet another model. one of the weather service models and amounts under half an inch. it's pretty chilly here. this is an interesting set up. this cold air has been in place in december and really cold as you get up into the northwest part of the continent. look that the 49 below notice yukon. quite interesting. we are in a blocking pat rch now. we are six degrees warmer here than yesterday and cooling to the west and as the system drags cooler air in. winds are north, northwest at 7. humidity 69% and water temperature now at 33 degrees. well, we have been talking about greenland block. this is greenland. there is warm air blowing from the atlantic oag westward and warmer in hudson bay and greenland than it is in chicago. see this blue area right here. this warm air running over the top of it kind of traps this cool air here in effect there is a big 1069-milibar high that's off the charts up here

in greenland. that's warm air dome. i saw ship out in the atlantic that had 60 degree temperatures yesterday while we peaked at 25. actually warmer north than here. and this weird, weird set up. sets up a jet stream pattern along the cold pool that's right in this area and see how the jet kind of arcs around it and then blows westward. brings warm air off the atlantic and traps cold air here. so that's a peculiar situation but that's the kind of thing we dealt with in the last couple of winters mp when you hear us talk about a greenland block, what's going on temperature are 29 northside learning center. hickory hills 30 and naperville at 27 degrees. and it's good-bye this system and hello the next one but it's days away. that won't be until later monday, tuesday. we will have these big storms and this thing that came through today was a big storm when it hit the pacific coast. and they tend to weaken as they come inland and then strengthen over the atlantic. we will keep watching these.

one may hit the area and will surely watch it. we don't see it just yet. that monday night thing looks interesting. tonight, or this afternoon occasional light snow. cloudy and more typical december temperature. we look for just a dusting to half an inch and high temperature of 31. some light snow early tonight and then partly cloudy later on. low teens inland. 19 at o'hare. tomorrow partly sunny. little colder. single digit temperatures at night inland but a high during the day of 25. and saturday, partly sunny, breezy, colder. indiana, michigan lake snow showers and a high temperature of 20 degrees. that's the pattern. wintry and tolerable. that's for sure. >> what we expect. thank you. here is a trivia question today. we are talking hone how many sides does a honey comb have? five, six or search? the answer

bulls seventh win in a row overshadowed by more injury news. derrick rose and joakim noah have been plagued with continued soreness but both started last night. carlos boozer picked up his teammates with another strong performance and was unstoppable in the post. scored 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. bulls cruise to an easy victory, 110 to 93. after the game the team announced that joakim noah will need surgery on his right hand to fix a torn ligament. he will be sidelined for eight to ten weeks. noah commented on the decision that had to be made. >> frustrating. i feel like we had a chance to be really, really good. and i never been this situation where we winning like this but i know that in the long run this is what needs to be done.

>> the -- avalanche beat them monday and a colorado pulled way from the third with tomas fleishman beating cory crawford for the score. hawks went on to drop their second straight to colorado 4- 3. the cubs reportedly closed to a deal to bring back kerry wood. he will return in a set up role for closer carlos marmol. woods spent his first ten seasons with the cubs before leaving in 2009. he spent last season with the indians and yankees and the white sox are close to a deal with reliever jesse crane according to espn. with more snow notice forecast, availability of the university of minnesota stadium for monday's game, viking game could be in jeopardy. crews have continued to clear snow. concern comes from the sheet of ice on the field. removal of the ice might result in damage to the playing surface. the indianapolis coaments have offered their dome stadium as potential site for monday's game. the vikings organization is reluctant to hold the game in indianapolis because of the potential for a large turnout

chicago's public school system is broken but the four top mayoral candidates are clashing on how to fix it. last night's education forum touched on hot bed issues like qualifications for school ceo, school vouchers and proposed state income tax hike. >> we have an obligation to make sure that you know how your tax dollars are going to be spent before we ask you for them. >> absolutely it should be put to the right reasons to the right purposes. i also like to see the money used for a longer school day and a longer school year. >> we still are in the middle of the recession and the recession is the absolute wrong time to suggest you will raise people's taxes. >> anyone who says that they are opposed to an income tax increase is not coming face to face with the reality in

five moneys and follow up study shows the delay lasts -- and patients suffered severe dangerous side effects. new health concerns are causing the fda to -- dental fillings are safe. last year the fda ruled that the fillings were not harmful based on scientific studies and now consumer and dental groups are questioning if those findings were true. they claim mercury can cause health risk especially in fetuses and young children. they are demanding the fda to warn users about mercury risk until further scientific testing is conducted. >> dannon company agreed to pay a $20 million settlement. investigation found dannon made misleading claims about activia yogurt and dan active dairy products. company claimed products helped with digestive help and investigation determined there was not enough evidence to back up the claims. illinois will receive $425,000 from the settlement. up next in lunch break, a sweet substitute for sugar alert -- learning how to cook
