>> yes. i'm a last minute shopper. >> yes, i am. >> i have to buy her something so i came down here. >> reporter: they come from all over to wherever there's a department store, a mall, or a sale. getting a jump tonight on the real last minute crowd joining in what could be the biggest economic boost chicagoland retailers have seen in a very long time. >> people that have the money are more constant to spend it now. people without the money are being frugal and i know retailers are making space for them. >> reporter: they're making space all right. also making them offers they can't refuse. promotions planned months in advance. macy's throwing the doors open 24 hours a day from tuesday through christmas eve at their oak brook, and oregon square locations. >> people get very excited about coming to a store at 2:00 in the morning that they usually wouldn't go to like a department store. >> reporter: they're also

excited at toys r us that are opening for 88 hours straight at stores nationwide from 6:00 a.m. tuesday until 10:00 p.m. christmas eve like it's not already busy enough. >> it is pretty crowded in there. it's crazy right now. >> reporter: but die hards like karen don't mind the crazy. they'll develop wherever the deals are. >> i think they got the best stuff down here. >> the thrill. are you going to get it, not get it? >> i go out and fight with people to get the last minute bargains. >> reporter: still plenty of time to get those. they're hoping for a bump after a flat holiday season last year. while self-gifting along with gifting is up. not sure what that says about us. but it does mean things are looking up for the economy overall. >> excellent here muffs, micah. there's something in it for everybody to be unhappy about. president obama calling the new tax bill a win for his administration. lourdes duarte has the scoop on

how we'll all be effected. >> reporter: president obama signed the bill, quickly defended his compromise with the republicans. republicans take over the house in january. here's a look from ab expert at what this plan will mean for you. [ applause ] >> reporter: signed and ready to go. an $858 billion tax plan expected to help the rich, the middle class, the unemployed. >> it's 72 pages of legal ease. >> reporter: tax attorney albert grasso is on his third page of those provisionings presidents it will extend the bush era tax cuts for two years. extend unemployment benefits and lower the social security and estate tax rate. it's that last one that grasso thinks most americans will notice immediately. >> this represents a tax reduction because you're going

to see a 2% decrease in the social security taxes. >> reporter: the president telling reporters today without the tax deal, the average american would have had to pay an average $3000 next year. >> that wouldn't have just been a blow to them. it would have been a blow to our economy just as we're climbing out of a devastating recession. >> reporter: but extending the bush era cuts came with some criticism. most have liberals who say obama wasn't tough enough with republicans. tonight the criticism from grasso is simple. to stimulate the economy, you've got to think long-term. >> all these rules are only good for two years. that doesn't encourage long- range planning. and we've got to get out of this look at the cycle in a one or two year basis. if you really wanted to do something taxwise, these are the rules for the next five years. >> reporter: okay. so here's an example. tonight in actual dollars a

married couple with two kids and some investments making $70,000 a year would save $8200 in taxes combined. meanwhile, with many of the provisions expiring in 2012 as you heard there, you can bet it will be a hot topic during the presidential election. >> thanks official business keeping the president from flying to hawaii to start the holidays. first lady michelle will leave for honolulu tomorrow with the kids and first dog bo. president obama will wait until the session in congress is done which could be next wednesday. the first family is expected back january 1. chicago home for the holidays now. 10,000 turkeys and hams gave away today. they've been doing it for 46 years. this year's organized by jesse white. for the past 21 years mayor daley has visited children at the hospital during the holidays. this will be his last holiday

as mayor. he thoroughly enjoys the visits. the hospital provides care to children with life long medical conditions regardless of their family's ability to pay. >> the greatest moments of my tenure over 22 years has always been to visit hospitals and facilities like this to meet the great staff and the professional people and the patients and their families and see how this care is so important not only to them but to our city. >> now, if the mayor comes back to the holiday party, it of course will be as a private citizen. speaking of mayor, rowland burris is not interested of trying to replace daley. friends of his tried to draft him. burris issued a statement today thanking everyone for their support. he does look forward to watching a spirited contest

here. crews scrambled to rescue what they originally thought was a dog on ice in the water. they had a different animal on their hands. >> reporter: along the lake front on a clear chicago morning, the eyes of many took focus out on to lake michigan. >> it looked like he waited for the boat to get there and get him. >> reporter: and the coyote named holly that was floating on a tiny chunk of ice so far away from land. >> took binoculars to see him. >> animal control was able to get here very quickly. so the decision was made to try to assist them in the rescue. >> reporter: and time was of the essence. the water temperature was the biggest concern. it is right now 33 degrees in the lake along the lake front. which meant the odds of rescuing holly alive were slim.

what was slimmer was the effort to rescue a wild animal. as holly kept going, so did the team assigned to the task including the fire boat that was to take animal control to the scene. >> we cheered it on as the boat got near. at one point he tried to make a swim in to shore. then he found another ice float and got back on. >> reporter: once it was there it didn't take long to get holly on board. >> once they got him on, it was like the coyote was happy to be out of the water. >> reporter: then back to land where she was taken to the veterinarian for some tlc. >> i'm sure the firefighters feel good about themselves even though it was a die yet. you never get that close to a coyote even at the zoo. so they're kind of excited. >> reporter: shawn lewis, wgn news. >> we learned that holly suffered some frostbite but that's it. she's now being cared for at the flint creek wildlife center

deceased. >> reporter: the business muddy paws has been closed for a year. her address is the same as the business so it's unknown if she stays here. they found another five dogs friday. the four emaciated dogs and two emaciated cats are being treated. it's unclear if they will survive and/or be placed for adoption. it's unknown how they died. >> they were deceased. it was intact. it wasn't like they were decomposing. >> reporter: muddy paws is in deer park. diane accident edrup was arrested. a case like this can happen anywhere. >> we feel for the dogs. as well as the dogs that were recovered and hopefully the dogs that were recovered will survive and will be able to be

reunited or find new homes. >> reporter: judie garcia, wgn news. how did he survive? the driver of a pickup truck that crashed into a freight train. it happened this morning in riverdale. rescue workers pulled the driver out of the truck while it was still on the csx train tracks. he was taken to christ hospital. no word on how he's doing. but he was talking to folks at the scene before he left. the train was going to cicero. no one on the train was hurt. possible outbreak. the culprit may by sprouts. many of them eating sandwiches at jimmy johns with sprouts in them. symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nothing good. coming up: how much money a north side teacher raised online for his classes. something any teacher can do. we'll show you how successful he was though.

opera repertoire books. they lacked the funds so they turned to donorschoose.org. >> it's a great website and tool for teachers who are looking for funding for classroom projects. >> reporter: any teacher can set up a listing. just describe your need in detail and anyone can log on to make a donation for your cause. >> one of the great things we've been able to do is get funding for vocal coaching for kids who would not necessarily have an opportunity to do so. >> reporter: it got better. paul and mike also entered a contest through online search giant yahoo. >> we gave your student and parents an opportunity to participate. all they had to do was make yahoo their home page and give a vote to one of our projects. so we had a couple hundred kids

vote. and yahoo was gracious and funded our project. >> reporter: the students are grateful for the support. and just as thankful to have a teacher like mr. c. >> it's a reflection of how hard we work, to be honest. we have a lot of strenuous rehearsals. >> is that a hint at your teacher? >> exactly. we know it's time to work when we come in. we have to make an effort to get it right. >> he's a really great teacher. he knows what to do. he puts you on the spot but in a good way. he makes you work for what you want to do. >> reporter: yahoo plans to give away close to $350,000 through its home pages for home rooms program. if you would like to make a donation of some kind to a project here or a school throughout the chicagoland area, do it through donors

higher level. after competing for his skill, he is now getting rewarded in different ways these days by helping those with disabilities master the art and gain confidence at the same time. >> reporter: some may can what brett wolfe does god's work. >> good job! >> reporter: this judo destructor has been teaching the martial art for 17 years. he says his career started because of a twist of fate. >> my instructor, the great henry yokomora who has instructed many in the area. he had a stroke and became incapacitated. >> reporter: so he took over at the club. a couple years ago he decided to help teach people with developmental disabilities and

visual comparement -- impairments. julia can't wait for class. >> i like because i get a yellow belt. and i like him. >> reporter: julia and her mom found out about brett through the caring for kids program. >> i heard that martial arts is good for all children but especially children with developmental disabilities because it helps to work both sides of the brain. brett looks beyond the disabilities. he sees the children and the playfulness in them and the full heart they have and their willingness to learn. that's what he taps into. >> reporter: ash raw taylor has a vision impairment. she says it's brett's patience that keeps her in class. since she's begun, she's lost weight, gained strength, and confidence. >> i have trouble with my eyes

as well as trouble breathing. there's times where it's intense and times he says we need to bring you down a bit. >> reporter: for sarah and the others that brett teaches, judo is a great activity. but it's brett that makes the big difference. >> he has this thing about him that he comes up to you and there's a kind factor there. not a lot of people have that. not that you can tell right away. >> judo's main principal is whatever we take from the sport we put back into the community. you don't realize how blessed and lucky you are sometimes you'll be happy to throw a little pity party for yourself. you're having a rough day and you see these kids and adults that very dealt a tough hand and they're not complaining. they're working and trying to live a regular life.

aflac! more snow down the pike, huh? >> could be. we've got two winter systems left to watch. it's interesting they'll come in close to the rain/snow line. but the pineapple express is running. it's starting to slam the west coast with big rains. we'll explain that to you. it could be the beginning of wetter weather here. and in aspen, colorado where these pictures come from. look at the snow pack out there. all the mountain ranges out west will get some. and in europe, the big snows

continue to come. from tuscany, they got these pictures. that might be the biggest snowstorm there since the 80s. it's one of areas out we that have been struggling with the weather that's been going on. so we're not alone with our rough winter. beautiful day here in chicago. it's been cold, but it's not been barbaric. and we had a lot of sunshine today around the area. that's pretty much how the weekend looks. not extreme. we've had much colder in the chicago area. going to be a good weekend for that last minute shopping before the holidays. we're expecting single digits even a subzero temperature west of the city. 15 of he -- the 17 days this month have been below. that's when the suns rays far

as far south on the planet as they will. 47% of the united states is covered by snow. look at the snow from last weekend's blizzard to the west of us. in syracuse, new york, they've had over 70 inches of snow. and that is already they're snowiest month of december. and the big storm here moving through canada is coming off that snow pack bringing the winds here. that's why we're cold. look at this off the west coast indicated by the isobars. you can see we've got action going on. but not right away. this big vortex here will rotate northwest winds and on a couple of impulses tomorrow afternoon could bring flurries into the area. here's what's going on out west. this could have a profound impact on our weather. this is called the pineapple express. hawaii sits there. that's where the name comes from. this comes from the pacific into the west. when that thing develops and

rides the jet stream like this into the country, you get impulses that move across the country and you've got to watch those. we've had a couple pass by us in the past few days. this could set up snow monday for us. there are advisories out west where they expect snow in feet. look at this forecast from the weather service's gfs model. of total rainfall. there will be places in california that may get 12- inches of rain. 8 or more inches of rain at the base of the mountains in the sierra. and that will all be snow. and ten days of total snowfall off the model, you see how we get more snow than usual in our area as well. that will come in a whole series of systems. during the day we've had forecast the next two weaks could see a total in this area. it's cold but not barbarically so.

see it's 7 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. and much of the country has been cooler than 24 hours ago as this cold air comes down off the snow pack. west winds at 10 but they're fading away. that's why we're cooling off. with a water temperature at 33 as shawn lewis reported earlier, that was a factor in that coyote being out there on the ice flow today. and we have ice flows all over the west end of the lake. we also will have lake snows blowing into parts of michigan, not indiana so much. but these won't be as heavy as what we saw last week. down to 6 at rochelle. it's 8 at kankakee. o'hare's at 14 with a 13 at midway airport. a 16 at gary. a 10 at mchenry at this hour. and look at the view out west. this is nevada. you can see the snow-covered mountain in that area. we'll tell you more about this weather system that's coming at us on monday. one of two that could be bringing us some snow.

be another one possibly on christmas eve and it could spill into christmas day. it's been about eight years since we've had an inch or more of snow on christmas eve or christmas day. and 59 years since an 8-inch either of the holidays. that's interesting. even though 46% of our christmases have an inch of snow on the ground and are considered white christmases as a result. minus one tonight in the coldest locations. 10 near the loop. tomorrow sunshine with some clouds in the afternoon. riding those northwest winds in the area and a flurry. a high of 22. west winds tomorrow 10-18. partly cloudy and a few flurries and 12 tomorrow night. partly sunny and continued cold sunday. a high of 24. most hours will be pretty nice this weekend. could get a bit of snow on

on the medical watch: eating healthily. sometimes the packaging calls out to you. what you should know is sometimes that may be a wrong number. registered dietitian ricky vatelli is here to tell us what to look at. >> you should always look at the nutrition facts panel which is on any packaging. we'll look at some today and see what are the things you should be looking for. sugar, sodium, fat. >> you automatically fiber one is going to be healthy.

see how the downwind areas get some lake effect snows. but high pressure dominates. you'll see that low developing out to the west. we can take you into the formation of that band of snow. see it coming together and approaching us by 10:00 a.m. monday and coming in during the afternoon. looks now like that might snow for several hours on us at a good clip. then change over to drizzle late monday night. but you can get several inches of snow. there's the snowfall for the weekend. and here we'll show you the two systems to effect us next week. that one the isobars start wrapping around it right there. this is a blot where the winds are the strongest. so we get a good gusty wind going here both on monday and tuesday behind the system when the winds go northeast. then the high passes over us right there. and the next system comes in. and this is the one that has the crack at producing some snow christmas eve and maybe christmas day. so we'll keep an eye on that. thought you might be interested in this. this is a first guess of how much snow might come down from
