waukegan police are searching the apartment building right now looking for a least one person who shot and killed a man during a carjacking. >> i'm steve sanders. >> and i'm nancy loo in for dina bair. wgn that jake miller is alive and walking with the latest. >> the victim tried to fend off the attackers before being killed. waukegan police are saying they're looking for three possible suspects. the lake county coroner's office is investigating a homicide of an adult male. residents say they

heard a loud commotion around 6:00 this morning. witnesses say a man on a bike tried carjacking on male who was warming up his cadillac in the 400 block. he shot him, killing him, and then ran to the east lake apartment buildings. residents have been told to stay in their apartments and if they leave the building they are beingare not being allowed back inside as officers with guns drawn searched the building four suspects. >> it was a cadillac with the rams, and your cadillac and the guy shot him and killed him. now they're in the building going 424 looking for him. floor to fllor \ooroor looking for

the tuesday special brought jawan ross and dantril brown into the restaurant. both inside for the 59¢ a legs and wings when two people outside got into a fight. one with a gun chased the other into the restaurant and started shooting. both teams were hit and killed and five others were wounded. both boys were students. their families are dealing with the senselessness of it all. >> his mother did everything in her power to make sure your kids had everything they wanted and they took our babies. >> illinois child welfare agency may have made critical mistakes

that contributed to the death of a four year-old boy from chicago. the child was beaten to death after state workers found no evidence of abuse in his home. amy rutledge joins us live from the newsroom with the story. >> one official says a reluctance by d.c. f s to really get involved is that the root of the case. in july crystal ball teh's took her three year-old son christopher to an emergency room. the tribune reports she told doctors he had fallen off patio furniture. doctors didn't buy her story and reported her to the department children and family services. on thanksgiving he was found beaten to death in his a gage park home. crystal ball as in her heart boyfriend cesar rosasruiz now

face first-degree murder charges. dcfs is coming under fire. the agency did not speak to the officer who interviewed felt as and christopher was never removed from the home. according to documents disclosed the investigation sooner than normal and missed or ignored key elements in the corn citing police investigation and accepted her initial argument that christopher hurt himself. they found not as guilty of neglect and recommended parroting services. cook county public guardian robert harris says the agency turned a blind guy. >> they should have made more visits to the home. they should have targeted services to christopher and his sister, but also to the mother. >> he says the department of children and family services does not a cold hearted agency but says there's a pattern of

reluctance to get involved. their spokesperson has not commented on christopher's case but tells the tribune investigators generally should not close a case while criminal charges are pending. he says the inspector general will conduct an internal investigation and a statewide child-review team will look into the case and make recommendations. >> an autopsy is planned today for a 15 year-old boy who was shot to death on the southwest side. the shooting happened around 530 yesterday in the marquette park neighborhood. witnesses say they heard gunshots and saw deonte malone stagger and fall to the ground. he was taken to christ medical center where he died. >> chicago police are questioning four people about an overnight robbery on the cta redline. it happened shortly before 11 last night at the cta station. a 20 year-old man was robbed by a group of people who hit him in the face, knocked him down and took cash and his

iphone. so far no charges have been filed. >> an appeals court has ruled that a man killed by a train can be sued by a bystander. and 18 year-old man was struck by an amtrak train back in 20008. a portion of his body fluid onto a platform striking a 58 year-old woman. she suffered a broken leg interest in herand wrist and her shoulder was injured. she sued the man's a state of the cook county courts dismissed it. the appellate court disagreed with the move noting the case law involving flying bodies supported the woman's case. >> retired chicago police officer look at his service dog back. jim sak was forced to give up his dog snickers because he is part pit bull in the iowa town he moved to does not allow the breed. he was happy with the

effect january 1st cps is required to publish standards on how efficient each school is. they're using a new formula to calculate space. the formula reveals costumes and nearly half of cps schools are not filled to capacity with 30 students in each room. advocates say the formula only look at general instruction in does not take into considerationfor special needs and other services. >> at noon, a major campaign shake up the head of the iowa caucus. michele bachman iowa campaign chairman resigned to endorse rival john paul. >> charges could be filed against british oil giant bp for its role in the worst oil spill in american history. >> and were the referees to blame for the black hawks lost to the kings last night? an upset coach clearly think so.

the roads are dry now but rain and freezing temperatures made him dangerous to drive on this morning. slippery roads caused several accidents on the stevenson and bishop ford expressways during the morning rush. in bolingbrook a pickup truck hit wall and a semi truck and six other vehicles were involved in another crash. and the planes a multi vehicle accident injured several people and closed elmhurst road for awhile. in west chicago car was hit by metro train when it struck another car and slid onto the tracks. the driver suffered minor injuries. heavy fog may be the cause of a 40 car pileup that killed two people and injured almost 60 more in new orleans this morning. it happened on

interstate 10 at about 4 this morning. both sides of the interstate were closed for several hours as emergency crews worked the scene. it was foggy at the time of the accident. >> michele bachman has lost her state campaign chairman to run pauls campaign. i was state senatori was state senator kent sorenson says he switched to the ron paul campaign because he believes paul is the right conservative for the white house. michele bachman said the jump was a deliberate move to discredit her campaign. >> the iowa caucuses drew a huge amount of media attention because i was considered the first real contest of the presidential nominating race but in terms of delegates it means at 0. iowa caucus goers will choose who gets to attend republican county conventions in

stocks are up. the dow gained about a hundred points right now. the shows the economy is holding up despite europe's debt crisis. home sales rose and the number of people filing for unemployment benefits came at a three-year low. the economy created 150,000 jobs in december. a big slide in gold today which is down 2%. its [bleep] gold is on the brink of a bear market. gold is now down to $1,500 an ounce. a different story for amazons candle products which are really red hot. they're sold over 1 million

saturdays at bridgeview, a markham, maywood, rolling meadows and skokie. the mark and courthouse also operate on sundays. someone who faces a bond hearing on a weekend will have to go to chicago to maine criminal courts building at 26 in california. some suburban police departments complain that it will cost them more to transport dependence to the 26 and california location. gamow 14 federal districts will allow cameras in federal courtrooms. chicagos program will be the biggest. only civil trials could be recorded, no criminal trials. the judge and all attorneys and a case will have to agree in advance to permit cameras. no live coverage though ... the video would not be available for at least a day. >> there is a new seat belt law going into effect soon and illinois. starting january 1st

is a special-education teacher at portage park elementary school. she had 16 very special students in her first grade class. their needs are many in our level of achievement is buried. >> i just want to bring up the best of all my students no matter where their level is. i take what they can do rather than what they can't do. we take it from there. >> a lot of people involved with special needs kids don't set the bar high because they don't think they can reach it. >> barbara murphy son johnny has severe learning disabilities and myriad congenital health issues. in a few months he has been in mrs. schroeder's class he has made tremendous progress. >> she has set up for johnny and he is reaching his goal. >> it was barbara murphy who nominated her for a teacher of the month honors. >> i am overwhelmed. it was really kind of one mom to do this. i am overwhelmed. it's a

set up is underway and times square in new york for this weekend's new year's eve festivities. security checkpoints are in place and workers are putting final touches on the light bulbs on the giant globe. more than 1 million people are expected to stand and watch the ball drop at the stroke of midnight not to mention the many millions who will watch on tv. >> what's amazing is that so much of the country will celebrate the new year's arrival without a snowstorm or blizzard or pile of snow nearby. this is day 18 of 40 degree temperatures. the last december to do that was in 2001 and there's only been nine over the course of whether history. nine decembers with that many 40 degree days. we have an ic start

in the northwest suburbs. look how we cleared out in the afternoon. the clouds that produced the freezing rain off to the east of us. it pushed the mild oceanic air that produced this rain. we could do this again late tonight and tomorrow morning. we may have some icy spots and a couple ice pellets north and west of the city but today not a drop of rain anywhere nearby. the winds are pretty widespread. they're going to be part of our weather pattern here for the next couple days. wait until we see what happens on new year's. we could get up to 50 degrees which would mark the first time in history we have back-to-back 50 degree at new year's eve temperatures. we had 531 year ago. that has

never happened before and 140 years of weather records. the demarcation is pretty clear on this temperature plot. we're pushing that arctic gear back north and bringing this mild oceanic air across the country. that is something we didn't do in the last four winters which is one reason why this has been so different. look at the line right here. the north that it is 9 above in thunder bay and 34 in minneapolis. duluth has had 9 in. of snow so far. that trend is being repeated through not only our area but the upper midwest. one-tenth of an inch is the average snow cover across the midwest. we had over 50

percent under snow one year ago. 17 degrees warmer than 24 hours ago here in chicago. when you make that transition back into the pacific air you're going to make another transition back into arctic air sunday and monday which will be equally dramatic. that is the hallmark of one you winters. la nina winters. humidity is 60 percent right now. winds are all over 30 mi. per hour. temperatures are 44 at a minute ago. this is 18 consecutive days now we have had above normal temperatures this month. it starts a little dicey and damp

and harvard but clears out. that is our beautiful skyline. i wanted to show you some of these wind gusts flowing through wyoming and montana. there were 100 mi. per hour wind gusts in some of the mountains. that is what is pushing this oceanic air across the mountains and it is the reason we've been having mild weather not only today but tomorrow and saturday. we might close out the month of december with a little bit of rain. we're averaging nine degrees above normal. the reason is these weather systems. you could see @wthis 200 mi. per hour jet stream that keeps the arctic gear up north.@c it brings cold air@c@c down and such a buckle will bring quite a bit of cool air in

here on sunday and monday with powerful winds. the clouds are north and east across this afternoon. it does cloud over tonight. we will flirt with light rain drops and so forth tomorrow while this snow occurs up to the north the boss. this is the radar that shows the retreating or freezing rains of this morning and the new ones coming in through the dakotas. quite a bit of wind in this transition. this is the coldest weather of the season so far that will get sunday and monday. the winds will be 40 mi. per hour over the weekend. to assure you that in the update coming up here but short-term it is beautiful. partly to mostly sunny this afternoon windy and noticeably milder. we're 16

>> teenage drivers and new year's eve. a new study shows new year's eve is one of the worst days of the year for alcohol-related crashes and deaths 14 drivers. ironically the study finds that team believes the new year's eve is the most dangerous time of year to drive yet it is the day when teens most frequently drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. exercise does not prevent pregnancy related diabetes. norwegian researchers followed more than 800 pregnant women. some more assigned to exercise three days a week and the others stayed with the regular prenatal care alone. by the third trimester the percentage of women who developed gestational diabetes was about the same in both groups. the findings are surprising because exercise is considered an important part of preventing and treating type 2 diabetes in the general population. pregnancy related
