nine. chicago public schools unveiled its new "student focused" calendar for the 20-12 school year but students probably won't be happy about it. the new calendar adds 10 extra days to the school year. as part of the revisions both columbus day and pulaski day have been removed as holidays.. cps advisers wanted less interruptions to learning and more consistency for parents. the good news, school won't start until after labor day so students can enjoy those last sweet days of summer. rod blagojevich went to prison yesterday. his former chief of staff,still waiting to hear his fate. judge james zagel postponed today's sentencing for john harris. the judge simply saying he had leniency, considering he resigned from his job and agreed to testify against blagojevich in both corruption trials. he pleaded guilty to wire fraud which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. chicago police say an attack on a bronzeville street has gone from robbery to murder. an elderly man beaten and bitten - yes, bitten- for the ten

indiana jail and the warden there quit after allegations of improper behavior at the accident scene where she was fatally injured. jeffery kumorek, a retired chicago cop and former gary police chief, was described in some reports as drunk when he arrived at the scene. while jogging with three other officers. kumorek was reported to be drunk again at her funeral. the governor hoping federal officials will have a change of heart and issue disaster relief to illinois tornado vicitms. fema denied aid following the twisters that killed seven and flattened hundreds of homes. those tornadoes.. ripping through a bunch of states late last month and in early march. governor quinn says this has devistated the poorest communities in the state.. and he's calling on the feds to reverse their decision and provide aid to five southern illinois counties. >> we have inundated the federal government with facts and statistics about how serious the need is here and it is time for our federal government to step up and help people who need a helping hand. fema also denied disaster reliefit approved money for kentucky >> traffic is about to get

surprise welcome home today -- after returning from army duty in afghanistan. our gaynor hall is in the newsroom -- and has the story. gaynor? second day back at work at rush.. and, her co-workers planned this huge celebration. army captain sherry hedge tells us she was shocked overwhelmed, and grateful. the warriors' watch riders, police officers, firefighters and, hospital employees all gathering at rush university medical center, friday to officially welcome home captain sherry hedge. american hero! >> you did it! >> i'm honored. i'm overwhelmed. with a line of tears and hugs and pats on the back. hedge joined the army right after september eleventh. she's been deployed once to kosovo, and twice to afghanistan. after her last tour, in july, she returned home to chicago - with injuries.
