leaders meet in chicago to talk about the future goals of one of the world's most important unions. and a florida couple talks about life on hold, death threats in their mail, all because of spike lee's tweet. a stunning turn of violence before it even got dark. another half a dozen chicagoans shot tonight-- all of them inside a south side store. tonight, one of them has died. >> good evening, i'm lourdes duarte. micah's off tonight. >> i'm mark suppelsa. our top story seen around the country tonight on wgn america: gunfire in the gresham neighborhood. wgn's dan ponce is there for us tonight. still a very active investigation tonight. chicago police said the victims ranged in age from 16-25 and all victims are male. they were

taken to three area hospitals. neighbors and community leaders say the shooting was gang- related. >> about 6:00 p.m. police said the gunman went into a tobacco store and a 14 hunt but it bought block of west said the night and opened fire killing one and injuring five others. dozens of police officers and first responders were on the scene immediately along with friends and family members of some of the victims. one woman said her son's was so taken to grow to hospital. community leaders say the shootings were gain related. they say the store is a known gang hand out and all or most of the victims were members of the same gang in our target. several people said they saw the gunman running from the store. >> i heard about 10 or 12 shots and when i looked back, i saw a great vehicle sitting in front

of the store and we saw two young guys jump into the vehicle and speed off down the side street. >> 10 blocks away, police guarded another street. a great vehicle ditched off an alley. police have not said whether not the vehicle is a getaway car. officers at the scene calling for witnesses to come forward immediately. >> here is why we cannot you lose track of the attention and sanford florida and forget what is going on here in chicago. six people shot, one dead. that's not acceptable. that is genocide. worse than was gone in afghanistan today. >> one of the chicago police surveillance cameras, if it is working it might have captured a clear picture of the suspects. so far no arrests have been made. >> mayor emanuel unveils a roughly seven billion dollar

it's something our wgn investigations on pension abuse have highlighted. they quit their jobs, then take another position with the state that boosts their pension by tens of thousands of dollars. now there's a bill that's one step away from closing that loop-hole for good! the illinois house passed bill 39-69. that bill says former lawmakers must opt out of the higher pension plan or require the agency that did the hiring to pick up all of the extra costs--which saves taxpayers money. the bill moves to the state senate and if it passes there it will become law. vice president joe biden is in town tonight to raise money. biden is the headliner at two fundraisers in private homes of wealthy democratic party donors. he was at homes in lincoln park and the gold coast. just last month, president obama raised about two million dollars during his visit to chicago. biden and his motorcade came into town this evening right around the evening rush hour -- it might have slowed you down a bit. a mother stood outside of court, and there made a tearful plea for justice for her son. inside the court, her lawyer

filed papers to ask for a special prosecutor to look into the case of david koschman. he's the young man who died after allegedly being punched by r-j vanecko, the nephew of mayor richard daley. the koschman family says that their son's case was never investigated properly by prosecutors and police because r-j vanecko is a member of the powerful daley family. they say he's criminally responsible for the death of david who died after being punched back in 2004. his mother says her son's case should be re-opened and looked at fairly. >> i just really want the truth to come out and that it was not handled incorrectly or my son wasn't treated any differently. he was the most important person in the world to me and i just want to know that it is going to be handled fairly. >> members of the koschman family say they plan to be in court for any proceedings. meanwhile attorneys for r-j vanecko argue that the koschman case was fairly investigated and closed. still ahead: are there undiscovered john wayne gacy victims hidden at a second chicago location? tonight: more witnesses come forward to talk about why they

arrested in 1978. that same home on somerville is where he lived with his family before his divorce. >> he did not have an opportunity during those years to bury bodies. he needed a place to bury bodies. >> could that place be here on chicago's northwest side? this these were the same years that he worked as a maintenance man. former homicide detective knew gays in baghdad and said he once saw him at 3 in the morning and three in the morning. now neighbors have come forward to share their stories. mike nelson lived across the street from the building and at age 11 started the one your work and odd jobs for neighbors. but no job was more odd than the jobs he did for gacy. the window to gauge his workshop was painted black. he says that gacy drug strange trenches and a hole in the parking lot to repave it. >> they were black topping a

while getting ready for the nato summit in may, a mini summit is held in chicago today. leaders talk about international security and the future goals of one of the world's most important unions. wgn's tom negovan attended the high level meetings and hes now with us live at the museum of science and industry. this is where the mayor hosted a small reception for members of nato's advance team here tonight. those meetings that your talk about bout being held in chicago today are described by high-level government officials as a pre cursor to the main events coming up and make. the officials are meeting in the city now, some of the top- locally in international foreign policy. >> we have a big number in about 52 days where 60 world

leaders will be coming together to deal with really important issues like how we going to proceed in afghanistan? how does nato ensure the capabilities for the 21st century. >> people don't realize that among foreign policy leaders people have been talking about the chicago summit, we do not hear that because we are not necessarily in those conversations. but the chicago summit is repeated and now they're starting to come to chicago. >> the chicago summit has put the spotlight on chicago as a venue for progressive thinking on foreign affairs and national security issues. in the next few months chicago seem to be on the cutting edge of international security issues. >> the nano host committee fund- raiser $55.5 million will be raised. half of that from private companies. it keeps the

natal summit from being a burden on chicago taxpayers. >> the illinois supreme court accepted the city of chicago's petition to appeal a decision involving the owners of the "e- 2" nightclub where 21 people died in 20-03. the high court agreed to hear reversal of calvin hollins conviction - acquitting him of involuntary manslaughter. prosecutors then dropped the same charge against dwain j. kyles. the high court accepted 14 appeals - seven civil and seven criminal cases, all stemming from the asphyxiation deaths of 21 people caused by a stampede to exit the nightclub after security guards used pepper spray to break up a fight. a church in the western suburbs is trying to figure out how it got hit with a $27,000 phone bill! clergy at the unitarian church of hinsdale say they were shocked when they saw the bill. it's a bunch of long distance calls--real long distance, as in dozens and dozens of international calls overseas. church workers say they did not make the calls and the church was closed during the times that most of the calls were

in tonight's medical watch the number of children with autism rises by 78% in the u.s.. the center for disease control and prevention says one out of 80 kids had some form of autism in 2008. back in 2000 and one in 150 had it. the group of his speech says more children are diagnosed with autism because there's a better awareness and better diagnosis. the organization says these numbers prove there is an autism epidemic in the u.s.. >> the link between cancer and obesity. researchers report that obesity and a lack of pesticides are risk factors in as many as

a new surveillance video is raising questions about the shooting. george zimmerman claims he opened-fire in self-defense.. during his shift as a neighborhood watch volunteer. but, this video doesn't show any obvious signs of injuries. zimmerman's attorney says the video is "very grainy," and

zimmerman was "cleaned-up" and received first aid following the shooting. martin's parents say the video shows zimmerman could not have been in a physical altercation with their son. a couple is forgiving spike lee.. for wrongfully identifying their home address.. as george zimmerman's. lee tweeted the mcclains address, even though zimmerman lives more than four miles away from them. >> we definitely accept the apology. we just don't want this to happen to anybody else. they put anything on there and they just don't care. they do not care how it affect other people's lives. >> the mcclains say the mistake probably happened because their youngest son's last name is zimmerman, and his middle name is george. the couple is now holed up in a hotel because they're receiving harassing them. high gas prices for drivers.

low tax bills for big oil companies. president obama says that doesn't add up and he's asking congress to cut tax breaks to big oil companies. the white house says the tax breaks add up to about 4 billion dollars. but critics say that cutting the tax breaks would only raise production costs for the oil companies, and that they would just pass the price increase along to the customers anyway. mister obama said he's not worried about the big oil companies, he's worried about the average working man and woman. >> is not as if these company cannot stand on their own. last year the three biggest u.s. oil companies took home more than $80 billion in profits. exxon pocketed nearly $4.7 million every hour. >> some senate republicans blocked a measure to end tax breaks for major u-s oil companies, but president obama says he'll keep trying. the democratic-sponsored measure would have repealed subsidies benefitting bp, exxon, shell, chevron, and conoco- phillips.

road projects across the country get a green light from congress today. the house gave transportation projects a three month extension and the senate approved the plan. it pays for highway construction across the country. earlier this month, the senate approved a larger, two year extension. house lawmakers are expected to look at that when they get back from spring break in two weeks. a bi-partisan coalition of three illinois house members backs the senate plan. one of the nation's first african american leaders died in chicago. she was 88. she launched her career in labor when she was elected vice president of local 56 while she worked for a meat packaging company. she eventually became a big player for the united food and commercial workers union. she and her husband also pounded it and serve as co pastors of the vernon park church of god and nine is installed island. reverend willie barrow was a). >> she was involved in the
