culture change on the north side is in progress but after bill murray threw out the first pitch today, it was groundhog day all over again as we saw so often last year, a late-inning collapse cost the cubs. and their new manager dale sveum, debuting on a sunny but chilly day at wrigley. a day for the pitchers, and ryan dempster took advantage of it; seven and two thirds, two hits and ten strikeouts but his bullpen let him down, first kerry wood in the eighth and then carlos marmol in the ninth. ian desmond poked it to right to score the go-ahead run, that was rough. the cubs did have a chance in their last at bat, ian stewart hit one that would have bounced off a building across sheffield on a lot of days. today it fell on the warning track, a one out triple but pinch-runner joe mather was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a grounder to third and that's it - cubs lose the opener, 2 to 1 they wasted a good one from ryan dempster.

it all happened after seven o- clock. emergency crews called to an appliance store in the 48-hundred block of south ashland. the roof collapsed but no reports of injuries. officials have not released any information on a possible cause for the fire. jury selection is started for the man accused of killing snger jennifer hudson's family. prospective jurors let out a gasp when they realized they might be picked for the case. defendent willam balfour sported a clean cut look with close cropped hair. his hair was wilder when he was arrested for the murders in october of 2008. he's charged with killing hudson's brother, mother and nephew. he allegedly was angry that hudson's sister wanted to divorce him. out of the pool of 150 jurors, 20 said they could be fair and were dismissed. a top attorney not involved in the case thinks most people can set their biases aside. >> most people really want to do the right thing. we ought try to weed out those who won't. the try to find those who will

listen to your point of view. >> jennifer hudson is on the potential witness list as is her sister. a former cop who shot three chicago police officers was sentenced today to 40 years in prison. wgns julian crews has more on the sentencing of 61-year-old howard morgan. >> holding a picture of her husband a rose morgan is talking about what happened after the sentencing. >> he was a beautiful husband and beautiful grandfather. >> they said this never added up. the police account of a fierce gun battle back in 2005 were investigators say morgan who was a police officer with the railroad and a former police officer himself fired 17 rounds at his former comrades wounding three officers. defense lawyers pointed to 28 gunshot wounds suffered by morgan. earlier he

fourteen chicago public schools now have new high definition security cameras. cps ceo jean-claude brizard unveiled the cameras in the halls of dunbar career academy. he says the school system got them installed under budget and ahead of schedule. the cameras are tied into a cps headquarters and the police department. brizard says cameras placed at fenger high last year have made a difference. >> think it is our best example in looking at a reduction in misconducts. somehow when the young people know someone is watching, most people would say

10 to be paid accordingly. >> six to eight cameras are placed in each school at a cost of a half-million dollars per school. brizard says cps saved 200- thousand by installing these ahead of scheduled. the war of words intensifies. the chicago teachers union and the head of chicago public schools respond to the possibility of a strike. ctu president karen lewis said today, teachers and paraprofessionals are tired of being blamed, bullied, and belittled. she also questioned how cps will pay for an expanded school year and longer classtime. her comments come just days after her union announced there is unanimous support for a walkout, if contract talks with the city break down. the two sides are at odds over several things particularly teacher salaries. >> it is unfortunate that they would be talking about a strike when they know we have so much work we have to do with that our schools. >> cps chief jean-claude brizard added he's focused on

working very hard on a plan that'll work for children. the illinois supreme court clearing the way today for assault weapons ban. the court issued a unanimous decision, saying it wants the circuit court to hear evidence on whether assault weapons get the same second amendment protections as handguns. cook county prohibits owning high-capacity, rapid-fire rifles and pistols. gun rights advocates say they're happy with today's ruling. >> the core of the argument is these are are just something special not was upheld. >> three cook county residents are challenging the ban, arguing it's too vague, too broad, with little connection to public safety. mitt romney trying to move on to the general election, but rick santorum doesn't seem to be ready to call it quits. coming up: the latest is the fight for the gop nomination. plus a convienence store in a small illinois town gets its share of the mega millions jackpot.

>> and i'm going into pennsylvania and the ball. >> and romney, who's not polling well with women, added his voice to the chorus of calls for women to be allowed to join augusta national golf club. after bowling for votes yesterday in pennsylvania, rick santorum stayed out of the spotlight today. he held two private meetings with conservative leaders. sources tell cnn they discussed how to sway newt gingrich voters santorum's way. and the santorum camp is pushing back against moderate republicans who say he should drop out and endorse romney. some of the hurdles of starting a small business are getting knocked down tonight. the president just signed into law a bill that will make it easier for small businesses to fundraise and find investors. the jobs act is now officially a law. the law removes alot of the red tape that was in place that severely limited how small businessses could go after private investors or go public. the bill applies to companies

with less than one billion dollars in revenue. it had support from both sides of the aisle. the federal government will know take a few months to get some rules and regulations in place before small businesses can begin taking advantage of the new law. it's not often that you hear that the city of chicago is saving taxpayers money. but today the mayor announced that a competitive bidding process saved the city 2 million dollars on recycling costs. the mayor released figures that showed the savings and show that recycle is more efficient. he also announced that the recycling program will be expanding. emanuel says the entire city should be included in the recycling program by the end of next year. the competitive bidding process is also expanding in an effort to save the city money. next up tree trimming and street markings. the convenience store in illinois that sold a winning mega millions lottery ticket, cashes-in today. the illinois lottery director presented a 500-thousand-dollar check to the store in red bud.

survived the attackthe hinsdale police department today...after hawks attacked two small dogs in the past month. both attacks injured dogs weighing less than twenty pounds...and one of the attacks injured the dog seriously enough, it needed substantial medical treatment. in the second attack, a thirteen-pound dog named zha-zha was spared injury by her quick- thinking owner jane brooks.

hoping for more than we did not get. theit's a shame for theo and his crew, for dale sveum, for the huge crowd at wrigley and especially for ryan dempster, who seems to have this happen to him more often than it should. a late-inning cave in by the bullpen spoils opening day against the nationals. and it got off to such a great start, too. bill murray scoring the first run of the season in the pre-game. it looked for awhile like that might be the only run, but finally in the fourth, marlon byrd knocked in ian stewart with a base hit to left, cubs grab a 1-0 lead and ryan dempster was pitchin' his ball-- deep into the eighth inning without a run allowed, but he left there with one on and two out, and kerry wood walked the next three nationals to force in the tying run, jayson werth gets the rbi 1-1 and in the ninth, carlos marmol in there with a runner at second and sure enough, ian desmond chunks one off the end of the bat, and the winning run scores 2-1 washington, and afterward the pitchers felt
