several earthquakes have struck the western coast of north america. a 5.9 magnitude quake hit southwest of portland, oregon yesterday afternoon. just minutes later -- a smaller one hit off the coast of central california. and overnight, a pair of quakes rocked the gulf of california. they measured a magnitude of 6.9 and 6.2, and were centered about 350 miles southeast of tijuana. yesterday afternoon, thousands of people fled into the streets of mexico city, after a strong earthquake shook buildings there. there were no reports of injuries or damage, but that quake measured a magnitude of 7.0. and experts say those quakes are not connected to yesterday's massive earthquake that struck off the coast of indonesia. the 8.6 magnitude quake was felt in singapore thailand, bangladesh, malaysia and india. five people were killed and a child was critically injured by a falling tree. a tsunami warning ws issued for
