top of the broadcast. top story chicago aldermen and dear rock stars of city hall in chicago we have discovered what they are paid in retirement like them. top story beginning with a question part-time employee working for the city better pension deal than full-time police officer firefighter or other city workers? pension perks. tonight investigation reveals a sweet pension deal for famous a part-time workers at the aldermen. we went to the biggest name ed burke longest serving alderman in the city council there when sweetheart pension deal was hatched. he invited us to come talk after council meeting look what abruptly happened when we did. he zipped past the camera. >> why so touchy? he remembered

purposefully got alderman pensions so you would fall in line? >> that was before my time it is interesting you can look at that and a couple of ways. >>you can say they sweeten the pot to bring new people and our people to be ok >> what a deal that was simply put alderman can contribute more and get retirement money faster than your typical city worker. for example firefighters it takes 29 years of service to qualify 75 percent of what he made on average in the last four years of a career. now look at the aldermen in just 20 years pension worth 80 percent of their highest salary. >> i believe is too generous. >> former firefighter and the 36th ward alderman says something needs to change. nick

$115,000 a year. by law the job is only part-time they are allowed another job at the same time >some like former alderman helen shiller publicly refused a pay rate years later behind-the- scenes she and others went along with deal to base pensions on the highest salary. then the retired alderman tom allen his job after appointed cook county judge couple of years ago. something he thought about for a long time even seeking advice from the pension board how it might benefit him judges getting sweeter deal 85 percent of salary. unlike most of us in the private sector start in scratch government workers get to take their years with them by
