summit this afternoon president obama will head to joplin missouri to deliver a commencement speech. the last time that the president was in joplin was to survey the damage from the deadly tornado that struck their one year ago tomorrow mr. baum is expected to commemorate the losses as well as celebrate the success of the recovery efforts of our students have been attending a temporary high school and local mall tomorrow ground will be broken on a new high school middle school and two elementary schools nato protesters are back on the streets of chicago today the latest demonstration is happening outside boeing headquarters in the west loop that is where we find julian crews standing by live with that story there was no protest permit issued but the march culminated- year in front of boeing headquarters andy thayer an anti-war activist

well known here in chicago was finishing his statements ... we would have you listen but unfortunately many of the speakers are using obscenities so we cannot go up live with that language or sound ... but these protesters are filled with passion against this war this country has been engaged for more than a decade in two theaters of conflict these people marching here are right in front of the chicago river and behind them is the civic opera house this protest is creating a dilemma for the police force it did not have a permanent in contrast to yesterday's protest which was very well defined the marchers followed a specified route approved ahead of time the police does not know what this group will do next. there are

200 people it is arguable that they are the most passionate of the anti-war protesters in beijing hear ... as they march into the loop it could create security concerns for the police force ... it seems as though the police are deploying a shifting strategy in contrast to what we saw yesterday the dramatic pictures are run michigan avenue with the wall of blue helmets turtle suits and riot gear and gas masks we don't see any of that today the police department has elected to take a different strategy more low-key with officers in uniform standing by around the boeing headquarters that company manufactures aircraft used in the military ... that is why it has been targeted by protesters

some veterans marched against the war and then held their own demonstration. several veterans of the wars in iraq and afghanistan took the stage at michigan and cermak they said that the wars are based on lies. they then turned and threw the medals that they earned in the direction of mccormick place and the nato summit delegates the veterans say that all the money spent on the wars could have been spent on schools clinics and social programs in the united states >> if you were watching coverage of the protests last night you saw police superintendent garry mccarthy was at the front lines at several locations he was seen giving orders directing traffic and he assisted in and arrest for police officers were injured yesterday when of them was stabbed in the leg if some officers were seen wearing gas masks but garry mccarthy says there was a miscommunication that he did not call for those

mayor emanuel and even the rev. jesse jackson have given superintendent garry mccarthy high marks for his handling of the protests but for garry mccarthy his actions during the nato summit likely cemented his position with the rank-and-file officers in a way his predecessor cannot robert jordan is in the newsroom with that story >> he reminded them to remember their training in not strike out unless provoked with violence >> the superintendent did a great job leading the entire police department today >> the superintendent has two jobs protecting the constitutional rights of the demonstrators marched and command his officers to maintain the peace if it means arresting the demonstrators that he is there to protect ... the delicate balancing act was a physical this weekend when protesters clashed with police >> they taunted the officers

degree-days this weekend ... that is the hottest we have had since last july ... the 93 high yesterday was the warmest single day temperature in chicago since september 1st of last year its amazing but the clouds have been streaming in with the gusty northeast wind by the lake ... we hope to have some sunbreaks as the day continues ... we're getting some moisture of of that lake breeze ... this month is running six and a half degrees warmer than it did one year ago the highest temperature for may was 73 degrees ... normally we are in the low '70's we are nearly 20 degrees above normal ... this year the month of may is running over six degrees

above normal temperatures in line across the midwest area most of the corn and the soybeans have been planted ... let's take a look at those noisy storms through the area last night there were hailstones recorded in many locations in some places got some brief downpours ... we are running 20 degrees cooler right now and we work 24 hours ago. there is a sign however that we will be warming up again by thursday into friday ... we will cool down temporarily saturday it will be warm again sunday and memorial day monday. things are warming up in montana and western parts of the dakotas so that means it's coming our way ...

i notice you have your grill going outside when i drive by the store it's great when we don't have a lot of time we can grab and it just warm things up when we get home >> and that's right and this is a stuffed boneless chicken breast i have to one is a wild rice stuffing with mushrooms the other as apples and raisins ... you can put these on the grill frozen ... very easy to make. and these are twice baked potatoes very easy to do on the warming rack of your barbecue grill they only take a couple of minutes ... they are a favorite.
