road and an industrial area here of arlington heights ... we spoke to a residential witness ... >> i heard a loud boom that i thought was a car or in a truck backfiring ... i reached the end of the blockade around the corner and saw several police cars and fire trucks ... and ambulances about 10 ambulances four or five fire department trucks if they had evacuated everyone on the southern end of the building ... >> wheat evacuate people from the building we determine that we had 10 other people suffering some form a respiratory distress said there were seven employees of the building and three police officers we

transported them to area hospitals for observation >> those seven employees suffered concussion injuries from that explosion ... the three police officers who reached the scene had some smoke inhalation issues there were acrid fumes in place ... when the chief notice that there were coughing there were sent to the hospital for evaluation they have now been released ... we noticed a moment or two ago osha is on the scene to try to determine the cause of this explosion ... chicago is getting back to normal today after hosting the nato summit. mayor emanuel was out this for their patience. wgn's tonya francisco reports from the south loop.

people do have lived it worked and own business here in the south loop and in the brownsville neighborhood where most impacted by the street closures ... those areas can alive again last night after the restrictions were lifted and mayor emanuel took to the local cta station to say thank-you ... the mayor sent part of the morning shaking hands of commuters at the roosevelt stop ... >> i wanted think these residents they bore the brunt of the inconvenience i wanted to personally thank them ... >> this woman who owns a hair salon couldn't be happier to see the summit concluded ... she was thankful there was no damage to her store firm during the protest she was closed since thursday because of the parking

restrictions she said she lost thousands in the process ... nato did provide a business boastsost to those who were slow before this summit occurred ... the heavy security gates are being taken away and life is getting back to normal here in this area ... >> our tourism will grow our convention business will grow 1 to make sure that chicago is promoted worldwide to see that it's a great place to visit invest and create jobs >> now that chicago has made its splash on the international stage we ask the mayor what is next? he did not want to comment he said he is happy that the summit went off without a hitch and was such a success ...

three anti-nato protesters charged in a bombing scheme are appearing in cook county criminal court at this hour. jared chase of new hampshire.. and brent betterly and brian church, both of florida.. were arrested last week in a bridgeport apartment building. they're accused of plotting to fire bomb chicago police stations, president obama's campaign office, and mayor rahm emanuel's home. they're each being held on one and a half million dollars bail. we hope to bring you more this hour if court concludes. the end of the nato summit included an agreement on when to pull troops out of afghanistan. the plan calls for handing over security responsibilities to afghan forces next year. nearly all u-s and other nato troops would then leave by the end of 2014. nato would then play a supporting role, by providing financial aid and training to the afghan army. the withdrawal would stay on course, even if the taliban threat remained. i don't think there will ever be an optimal point where we say that this is all done, this is

perfect, this is just the way we wanted it, and now we can wrap up all of our equipment and go home ... >> one afghan issue that was not resolved involves pakistan. the country still, has not agreed to re-open its ground routes for nato supply lines. those routes have been closed since a nato airstrike killed two dozen pakistani soldiers in november. the u-s envoy to afghanistan is exptected to step down from his post as early as this month. veteran diplomat ryan crocker came out of retirement last july to become ambassador in kabul. he led diplomatic efforts in afghanistan which focused on reducing the u-s presence there... while keeping the country from sliding back into civil war. crocker also attended the nato summit here in chicago... to participate in talks about afghanistan's future. it's not clear why he's leaving. a u-s army soldier from wheaton has died after injuries he suffered while serving in afghanistan. specialist samuel watts was

hurt by an i-e-d last month. he died on saturday in maryland. watts joined the army in 20-10 after graduating from wheaton north high school. he earned numerous medals during his career, including the bronze star and purple heart. watts was on his first deployment to afghanistan. he was 20 years old. police are investigating a traffic accident that killed an 8-year-old boy while he rode his bike in north suburban skokie. the three-car crash happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon -- on the corner of main street and saint louis. police say a toyota camry collided with a car... then hit the boy on the sidewalk, before striking a third vehicle. the boy died at the scene. so far, no citations have been issued. seven men are now charged following a weekend attack on a group of tinley park restaurant diners. ten people were hurt at the ashford house when a group of masked assailants from indiana beat them with bats. the attackers represent an anti-racism group. they said their victims were white supremecists.

five of the 18 alleged attackers were charged with felony mob action and aggravated battery. they include three brothers: cody, dylan and jason sutherlin, along with alex stuck and john tucker. two of the *victims* were also charged. one on a warrant for possession of child pornography and the other for unlawful possession of weapons by a felon. both are from out of state. coming up next the president praises residents of that joplin missouri on a visit their ... and a private rocket takes off for the international space station and what the latest survey has to say about the speaking skills of our u.s. representatives if you're one of those folks who gets heartburn and then treats day after day... well, shoot, that's

a statement from the transportation safety administration states the passenger exhibited suspicious behavior during the flight. and out of caution -- the flight was diverted and met by law enforcement in maine. today is a "day of unity" in joplin, missouri.. where residents are marking the anniversary of the tornado that devastated their community. one year ago today, a tornado packing winds of more than 200 miles an hour roared through joplin. 161 people were killed.. and 75 -hundred homes, businesses and schools were destroyed. joplin high school was left a pile of rubble. the school reopened later in a shopping mall. president obama visited joplin yesterday to deliver the commencement address to graduating seniors. >> some of life's strongest bonds are the ones that we forge when everything around us is broken ... and even though i expect that some of you will ultimately leave joplin, i am

pretty confident that joplin will never leave you ... here's what it looks like today in joplin, missouri.. with construction now in full swing and rebuilding efforts under way throughout the area. after 10-months of hiding... investigators locate casey anthony in florida, and serve her with a subpoena. anthony hasn't been seen since being acquitted of murdering her daughter caylee. "people magazine" reports investigators staked out anthony's new home for several days. she's been named in a defamation lawsuit stemming from the investigation into caylee's disappearance. anthony told police the little girl was kidnapped by a babysitter named zenaida gonzalez. the two never met... but gonzalez says it ruined her reputation. a private rocket took off from cape canaveral, florida early this morning. the "space-x falcon nine" is carrying the first private spacecraft heading for the international space station. it's loaded with food supplies and science experiments.

the rocket was supposed to take off on saturday, but was aborted a half-second before liftoff due to pressure problems. this mission will determine whether a private ship can deliver supplies to the space station. if you think lawmakers in washington are sounding a little more like high schoolers these days .. you may be right. the non-profit sunlight foundation studied the speeches of congressmen and senators and found that the overall speaking level of congress dropped from eleventh grade to tenth grade. among the illinois delegation ... chicago democrat danny davis had the highest speaking level .. while republican joe walsh had the lowest. researchers say the drop may reflect lawmakers speaking in more talking points and packaging their floor speeches for you-tube. next, advice for you workaholics and the people who love them. how to make the most of your need to be at the office. but first -- reality overtakes the hype. still ahead-ipo fallout

a former chief of staff under rod blagojevich reports to the mc-henry county jail today to begin a ten-day sentence. john harris was found guilty of taking part in blagojevich's schemes to benefit personally from his official actions as governor. harris' sentence is believed to be the shortest ever for a corruption conviction in chicago. prosecutors say it reflects the help he gave them in convicting his boss. blagojevich was sentenced to 14 years. a century-old scholarship program that's been riddled with abuse is about to come to an end in illinois. the state house voted yesterday to end the program that allowed lawmakers to hand out college scholarship to students in their districts. the problem was .. some lawmakers were giving the scholarships to children and

relatives of cronies and campaign contributors. supporters of the program say ending it will hurt high school students who might not be able to afford college. the senate previously vote to kill the program ... and now governor quinn is expected to sign the measure. an illinois lawmaker who's under indictment for bribery has given out nearly 185-thousand-dollars in college scholarships for next fall. state representative derrick smith was arrested in march .. but re-elected to his seat in the same month. the house opened hearings to expell smith after he missed several votes including the one to end the scholarship program. the scholarships that smith awarded can not be taken back because they were given out before the new law takes effect. the food vendors accused of giving gifts to chicago public schools employees will soon sign new contracts with the district. c-p-s announced plans to renew contracts with chartwells- thompson hospitality and preferred meal systems. this comes after the head of food services, louise esaian , resigned in march. she and two of her staff members were accused of accepting thousands of dollars

thunderstorms coming prevent us from seeing that temperature raceise ... we've had a significant drop in temperature from sunday to monday ... now we see this air mass in control of chicago whether ... not since 14 years ago have we seen this sort of a of a 90 degree temperature wave this early ... the month is running 63.3 that's nearly six degrees above normal ... this underscores how unusual springtime has been here this year ...
