she insists she was a good mother, and cared for her. a woman accused of killing her found not guilty by reason of insanity. prosecutors said marci webber slashed her daughter maggie's throat in 2010; before trying to kill herself. webber told police she killed her daughter because she feared the child would be sold as a sex slave. webber will be moved to a mental facility. next month, the judge will determine how long she will remain there. a coach at a chicago public school on the southwest side is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student. 39-year-old idris bridgeforth is charged with criminal sexual assault and felony indecent solicitation. investgators say the student's mother found incriminating text messages on her daughter's phone. bridgeforth is an assistance guidance counselor at ashburn community elementary school. he also coaches after school. parents at the school say they are stunned by the news. bridgeforth has been removed

an engineering company with ties to the daley family and other politicians from getting any state work for three years. state investigators concluded that mcdonough associates committed theft by overbilling taxpayers millions of dollars, the department of transportation has sent a bill for more nearly two million dollars to the firm, demanding reimbursement. the company hasn't been charged with any crimes. chairman james mcdonough says the company made some honest accounting mistakes. voting ends today, as the chicago teachers union decides on authorizing a strike. now, accusations are flying back and forth between the c-t-u and school officials. c-p-s says a ministers group monitoring the vote count is aligned with the union--and not independent. meanwhile, the union is filing a complaint against schools c-e- o jean-claude brizard for discouraging teachers to vote. they expect to have all votes counted by the beginning of next week.

[ crunch! ] eighteen victims of child pornography have been rescued during a nationwide sweep by federal law enforcement agencies. the sweep, called "operation orion" resulted in the arrests of 190 individuals. the u-s customs and immigration enforcement say most of the offenders live in the country but arrests were also made in argentina, the phillipines spain and the united kingdom. the operation took place last month. many of the cases began with a child or teen chatting with someone they met online. the united nations is accusing the syrian government of engaging in crimes against humanity ... after yet another massacre left dozens of civilians dead. the u-n held a moment of silence for the latest massacre victims at a meeting yesterday. graphic video posted on youtube shows images of dead women and children in the village of qubeir.

rebel forces claim 78 people were killed by government forces, while the syrian government blames terrorists for the bloodshed. the head of the u-n says they will discuss a new plan of action at a summit later this month. "rolling stone" magazine has printed the last e-mail of an american soldier who was captured in afghanistan, three years ago. and it may shed new light on his disappearance. bowe bergdahl has appeared in several taliban propaganda videos, critizing america and pleading for freedom. now, an e-mail to his parents *before* his capture portrays bergdahl as a man who was already disillusioned with the war. he said the army was full of liars, backstabbers, fools and bullies. and he said he was ashamed to be an american. the pentagon only says that it's still trying to win bergdahl's freedom. president obama strongly defends himself... against accusations his administration leaked highly-classified information... to toughen his image on national security issues.

a developing story to tell you about. a pakistani-american cab driver who pleaded guilty to supporting terrorism, has been sentenced to 7.5 years in prison. raja lharabhib khan admitted he donated hundreds of dollars to a man he knew had ties to al- qaeda. his sentencing came down just a short time ago. we'll have more on the wgn news at 5. a new study shows children living in the city have a greater chance of developing food allergies. researchers say that population density and environment impact food sensitivity. but they're not sure *what* in the environment is the cause. one in 13 children in the u-s are affected by food allergies. and children living in urban areas are more than twice as likely to be allergic to peanuts and shellfish.

the study also found a similar link with city kids and asthma. a new study reveals that teenagers in the u-s are choosing to smoke marijuana over cigarettes. 23% of american high school students say that they've smoked marijuana... while 18-percent say they've tried cigarettes. but in illinois, that number is significantly higher. a separate study reported that: 51-percent had tried smoking cigarettes, and 30-percent had bought cigarettes in a store or gas station. here's some motivation to get to the gym today... a new study found that workers that exercise on a regular basis ... earn 9% more than inactive workers. researchers say that exercise makes people happier healthier more attractive and even smarter...all factors that contribute to higher wages. another study found that for women, obesity is linked to an 18% wage reduction. we are making a delicious summer pasta that is affordable and easy.
