chicago teachers have voted to authorize a strike.. we'll be hearing details on the vote this afternoon. good afternoon. i am steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. wgn's tonya francisco is live outside a north side chicago school with a preview of today's big announcement. tonya? >>that official announcement that it has the vote is set to come in about one hour act you spokeswoman tells us that the vote will surpassed the 75% threshold required by state law and in some cases teachers at

some schools voted 100% for strike authorization ... and calling for the vote the union said that the teachers will not necessarily go to the picket line but they hope to have leverage at the bargaining table. they're not happy about the school board's decision to rescind their raises and require them to work a longer school day next fall ... they're looking for a 29% pay increase over two years but the board is strapped for cash facing a $3 billion deficit over the next three years to the school board is offering a 2% guarantee over five years for our rates to jean-claude brizard issued a statement saying that the members were pushed to authorize the strike before having the opportunity to consider the independent report from the fact finders due out in july ... he thought they made a false choice

being held on one million dollars bail. 27-year-old john hurt of calumet city is charged with murder and concealment of a homicide in the death of 16 year-old jessica tetter. police say hurt had a relationship with the girl's mother. jessica tetter's body was found last thursday in an alley dumpster in hammond, indiana. she was strangled. proseutors say hurt allegedly admitted killing the girl and hauling away her body. the best buy in the lincoln park neighborhood was robbed last night. burglars used a van to smash in the door at one thousand west north avenue. it happened at about midnight. a side door of the building was ripped out and left on the sidewalk. police have not said what items were taken or if they have suspects. during may burglars smashed into another best buy store and made

off with i pads in the heat of the night -- an extra alarm fire gutted an auto repair shop in the gage park neighborhood. the fire could be seen for blocks away -- as the temperatures soared around 80 degrees. it happened at 50th and south western. fire fighters got the flames under control in about an hour. no one was injured. but the fire burned through the roof and caused one wall to collapse. no word yet on what caused the fire. those two left-lane exits off the eisenhower expressway in oak park may soon disappear, if some state planners get their way. the state transportation department says, the exits at austin and harlem have a much higher accident rate than other expressway ramps. and the left-lane configuration makes it nearly impossible to widen the ike to relieve rush hour congestion. tonight at the oak park village hall, transportation officials will explain a proposal to replace the exits with regular right-lane ramps. mayor rahm emanuel today is expected to announce the members of a new board created to lure billions from private investors to help pay for public projects in chicago. the first chairman of the "chicago infrastructure trust" will be james bell... who recently retired as executive vice president of boeing corporation. also on the board will be business executives, a labor

jurors are hearing opening statements in the jerry sandusky child sex abuse trial. sandusky is charged with abusing ten boys over a 15 year period. prosecutors say he met all of the victims through his children's charity, while working as a coach for penn state. eight of sandusky's accusers are expected to testify against him. the defense has about five dozen potential witnesses on its list. they include football coach joe paterno's widow and son ..and assistant coach mike mc-queary. police in alabama are searching for a second day for a man suspected of killing three people.. including two former auburn university football players. 22 year-old desmonte leonard of montgomery, alabama is charged with three counts of capital murder. he's accused of shooting and

killing former auburn players edward christian and ladarious phillips, and a third man, at an off-campus party over the weekend. current auburn player eric mack and two other young men were wounded in the shooting. former egyptian president hosni mubarak has lapsed into a coma. mubarak is serving life in prison for suppressing a revolt against his rule. nearly 850 protesters died during the revolt last year. egypt's interior ministery says the prison authority granted a request for both of mubarak's sons to move beside him at the prison. the ministry says the former egyptian leader is suffering with high blood pressure, breathing problems and depression. mubarak's lawyers have asked that he be moved from prison to a private hospital. the us secretary of commerce john bryson suffered a seizure before being involved in two car collisions saturday night. police in los angeles county say bryson crashed his lexus into two vehicles-- and left the scene of each accident. he first rear-ended a buick drove off, then hit another vehicle a few minutes later. he was found in his car unconscious, and taken to the

hospital where an examination revealed he had suffered a seizure. the investigation is ongoing. bryson could face felony hit- and-run charges. voters in arizona will go to the polls tomorrow to decide who will replace congresswoman gabrielle giffords. giffords is stepping down to recover from a gun shot wound she suffered during a shooting rampage that killed six people in tuscon last year. her former aide.. ron barber.. is running against republican jesse kelly in pursuit of her congress seat. giffords encouraged barber to run and she is playing an aggressive role in his campaign efforts. an emergency meeting in detroit today... as city leaders try to figure out how to avoid financial collapse. the state of michigan is offering millions of dollars in revenue sharing -- but only if the state is given control of the city's finances. detroit's city attorney is suing the state... claiming the deal is void. mayor dave bing today demanded the city attorney drop her lawsuit against the state... the help detroit get the aid it needs.

a fast moving wildfire is getting wider and threatening homes in northern colorado.firefighters are trying to control the blaze that has burned more than 20,000 acres. high winds and dry brush is feeding the fire and making it harder to put out. thousands of people received evacuation calls last night. at least 18 buildings have been destroyed since the fire started saturday morning. one person is missing and may have been in an area that has

in medical watch.. the nation's largest health insurer says it will keep several key provisions of the health care overhaul in place.. no matter what the supreme court decides about the law. unitecdhealthcare will continue providing preventive health care services to customers without co-payments or other out-of-pocket charges. parents will still be allowed to keep adult children up to age 26 on their plans. and the company won't put lifetime limits on insurance payouts, or rescind coverage after a member becomes ill.. except in cases where a member intentionally lies on an application. a supreme court ruling on the health care overhaul is expected this month.
