night at the lurie children's hospital after he was pulled from the water yesterday afternoon his friends reported him missing rescuers clear the water formed a line and recovered him within 15 minutes cpr was performed on the teenager but he was unable to be revived ... a special celebration for younger students was canceled at the school today the principal said he was the youngest of three children and his family and he thrived at school in spite of losing his mother to breast cancer three years ago ... >>he was a fantastic kid did ... he was on the basketball and soccer teams he was helping younger students from the first to the third grades get into soccer helping them learn techniques ... >>friends say that he was not a strong swimmer they are planning a candlelight vigil outside of

his home this evening the park district says that the circumstances surrounding the drowning are under investigation reporting from marquette park i'm nancy loo ... this is the 25th drowning in the great lakes this year. that's a 92% increase over this time last year. we spoke to a water safety expert this morning who says when dealing with choppy waters and rip tides, the key to survival is to stay calm. >>the information we want out this year is the new strategy to flip float and follow ... flip over on to your back, it's easier ... flowed and notice the way the current carries you, and then follow the current and decide the best strategy to escape from it ... the great lakes surf rescue project says of all the drowings on the five great lakes last year... the highest number happened in the south end of lake michigan.

more firefighters are rushing into northern colorado... to battle a huge and deadly wildfire. the number of crews and engines is doubling today... to try to stop the flames from spreading any further. so far, the fire has killed one person. it has also scorched more than 43-thousand acres, and forced thousands of people from their homes. a third young man testified today that he was sexually abused by former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky when he was a boy. the 25 year-old man is described in court documents as "victim ten". he told the court sandusky threatened him.. saying if he told anyone, that he would never see his family again. sandusky faces 52 counts of abusing ten boys over 15 years. among those testifying yesterday.. the 18-year-old man whose accusations helped trigger the criminal investigation. robert jordan is in the newsroom with marco johnson's strategy for reducing youth gang violence

in medical watch.. a recommendation to older women not to take two popular supplements. the u.s. preventive services task force is recommending healthy post-menopausal women should not take low doses of calcium and vitamin d daily to prevent bone fractures. after looking at vitamin d in doses up to 400 i-u.. and calcium, up to one thousand milligrams.. the advisory panel says the nutrients slightly increase the risk for kidney stones. the task force says there is not not enough evidence to draw conclusions about taking larger doses to prevent fractures. for the first time, diesel fumes are being labeled as a "known carcinogen". the world health organization says diesel fumes cause lung cancer.. and diesel exhaust is a possible cause of bladder cancer. it's of particular concern in poor countries.. where people are routinely exposed to pollution produced by trucks, generators, and farm and factory
