backfiring, as the city faces an increasing murder rate. homicides in chicago are 35% higher this year, than last year. one difference is that the police department no longer uses large "strike force" units to swarm violent areas. superintendant garry mccarthy favors putting more officers in neighborhoods instead. but the chicago tribune reports that some police officers believe the rising murder rate is linked to the change. they say beat officers are being stretched too thin ... and not having a large team to back them up has weakened their response. mccarthy says he's not accepting that as an excuse. some changes are coming to chicago's marijuana law. mayor emanuel says he will support a new ordinance to reduce the penalty for possession of small amounts of marijuana. alderman danny solis is expected to introduce the proposal. it would apply to 15-grams of pot, or less. under the plan, officers could write tickets up to 500-dollars. most people we spoke to support these changes >>there's a lot of violence in the city maybe it's better to focus on something other than

wgn's gene richardsdean richards has the we can reuse ...eekend reviews.... the original jukebox broadway musical " rock of ages " successfully took a collection
12:39 pm
of '80s rock classics on stage and strung together a story of a small-town girl who comes to the big city for fame and fortune turning it into box office gold. it successfully captured the times and the songs with its razor-thin story. however, the movie version that opens this weekend, fails on almost every level. think: def leppard karaoke sung by your parents, in a glee-style, overpolished high school musical. artists like alec baldwin catherine zeta jones russell brand, dancing with the stars' julianne hough and paul giamatti, take on songs that are supposed to be raw and angst- filled, but instead, homogenize them. and the choreography seems more well-suited to a branson missouri salute to rock, rather than what '80s rock really was. and with a story this then the music needs to be right. in this movie it is not. if there are any positives, tom cruise steals the show as an aging axl rose like rocker. it's amazing to see what a real movie star can add to a film. and the short appearance by mary j. blige in the film ... it's amazing to see what a real singer can do with these songs instead of have actors trying to fake it. all " rock of ages " did was want to make me see if my old metallica cassettes still work! it's an empty dean's list grade of c minus. even worse is the latest in a string of adam sandler movies
12:40 pm
that almost everyone agrees are awful. yet people flocked to these, like the cineplexes are going out of business!"that's my boy" stars sandler and former snl-er andy samberg, as a long lost father who now tries to reconnect with his grown son who is the product of an affair between sandler's character as a teenager, and his high school teacher. classy, right? the elder trying to reconnect with his son is almost an after-thought in this film, that's overflowing with extremely r-rated situations which i wouldn't have a problem with if only they were funny. i'm not a prude about grown-up comedy but this movie is all shock comedy that wants to be the male version of "bridesmaids", but just winds up feeling sad and desperate. it will probably wind up in my five worst films of 2012, even if it does make $1 billion at the box office.... a dean's list grade of d minus. as always, you can take a look at my past and current movie reviews, along with my a list interviews this week with actors adam sandler and andy samberg about their new movie " that's my boy ". it's all up on my page of the website: wgntv.com/deanslist also you can get my weekly
