hot dust fourth of july in years. good evening. >> the top story seen around the country, and live look at the sky over navy pier, where the fireworks display is underway. >> we have not had a fourth of july like this in a long, long time, dangerous heat tonight. >> thousands of people without power, some heat-related deaths. randi has been following that story and joins us with more. >> there has been a lot of foot traffic on columbus drive. the crowds have come out despite the heat to see the fireworks but they're seeing a lot more. the street itself seems to have been a casualty of the high temperatures. you don't see this every day, on an independence day hotter than any july 4th since 1911.

the police say the heat is the likely cause of the bottling of columbus drive. it hit 102 today. the street has been closed since 3:00 this afternoon. the road will be closed tomorrow between monroe and roosevelt in preparation for the taste of chicago next week. the next two days could bring temperatures into the triple digits as well. it is very hot and there are still several thousand con ed customers without power in the northern and western suburbs. some people without power say they think they will have their power restored by later tonight. >> thank you so much. a movie theater in soapy was evacuated after losing power this afternoon at the village crossing amc movie theater.

the employees did not indicate when it would be back up and running. picnics, parties, and parades this fourth of july as far as the eye could see. >> chicago is celebrating america's birthday. for young and old pageantry and patriotism rules the day across the chicago land. from elmwood park to evanston, deerfield to des plaines where the governor got into the act signing three pieces of legislation in support of the illinois veterans, then marching with some of them. >> this is a good day to reflect that while we enjoy everything about the fourth of july and celebrate our democracy, there are men and women from our country who are deployed far away who are protecting our democracy.

[national anthem plays] plenty of developing stories this fourth of july, including a freight train derailment in the north west suburbs near the northbrook-glenview border. they're working to clean the area. this is a live picture before 2:00 this afternoon near willow road and sherman avenue, pulling call along the union pacific tracks. the bridge which had repairs to mate -- made to it last year also collapsed in the accident. >> it appears the bridge broke under the cause of the derailment coming and not by itself. that is something they're looking at right now. that will take a couple of days to sort out. >> the investigation is still early. it could be at least a month before the road it reopens.

>> fourth of july festivities are ramping up all over chicago. there are filled with food, the parades, and blistering heat. >> fireworks and lots of fun under way at navy pier. having a good time marcella? >> they are just wrapping up. you have to watch this. this is unbelievable. there is no better place to be that navy pier on the fourth of july. it is absolutely spectacular. more of that in a special and about 15 minutes. meantime it was so ridiculously high. you know how crazy hot it was. the heat definitely kept the people away, unfortunately. it is not as crowded as usual.

warmer. today, we can have an extraordinary meteorological move possibly the highest temperature ever. that was back in july, 1934, when we hit 105. there was one thermometer back then that read 109. 105 is in the books, and we could get close to that tomorrow. cumulus clouds, a lot of people at the lakefront, trying to stave off the heat. the heat is deadly. people die of this. since the 1980's, over 3000 people have died from heat- related whether fatalities. almost half of the number of people who have died in flood disasters. he is a deadly form of the weather. that is why we are watching with interest this heat wave and advising people to be careful

across the 24 states. also watching the march of power have storms to the north the upper midwest. 100-degree heat indices in yellow, and this is were there will be friday. this begins to collapse, the we may have a brief warm spell out before saturday. we hit 1020 at 1:33 at o'hare airport, midway, and at northerly island. this is the warmest summer on record since 1942. 25 states in the 100's, 41 states over 90 degrees. the hottest reading in our area was at kenosha, wisconsin with walkathon following close behind, 104. the heat indices in the triple digits as well, 105, in some cases 114. lincoln park, morton, naperville

got in there, so did hawthorne academy. at this hour, it is still near 90 degrees. at the lakefront in chicago, we are at 95, 93 lincoln park. carpenter at 89. there are the current temperatures. the cooler air begins to sag in our direction. all of these cities, and there are close by, st. louis lacrosse madison, milwaukee, all with record highs. the urban heat island effect, all of the concrete, the radiating heat, the highest heat indices right and the city. we may not get out of the low 80's in the city. that was one of the keys to the deaths in 1995, the fact that night did not cool off. with the dew point of 70 like it
