two people at this building had been hospitalized many senior citizens have not been able to escape the heat since sunday when the air conditioning broke down at the senior residents ... this woman's apartment was already 93 degrees this morning the air-conditioning for the 68 apartments at the senior building at roosevelt and loomis has been out since sunday essentially since the heat wave began >>it's unbelievably hard it is fortunate that i did not have a heart attack or something ... i have health issues most people here have health issues ... >>upon hearing the unbearable conditions aldermen helped from the city ... and the red cross has set up a cooling center within a room and the building ... >>even though you appreciate this, sleep is out of the

managed to open this but the judge wants to preserve the rubble to give the family a chance to survey the situation the heat and severe weather may have caused part of a building to crash-down onto several people in melrose park... seriously injuring two kids. the facade at the top of a building at 1-36 and 1-38 broadway collapsed around four o'clock yesterday. a nine year-old boy and and a seven year-old girl suffered head injuries, and are being treated at loyola university medical center in maywood. witnesses say they heard thunder and saw lightning, but thought the rumbling was just the storm. >>we saw more rocks falling three other people were injured but refused treatment. funeral services are being held today for 7year old heaven sutton. family and friends filled the saint mark international christian church, this morning for an emotional memorial service. the little girl was killed by a

stray bullet last week in the austin neighborhood. sutton was helping her mother sell candy outside their home, when a bullet struck her in the back. today, police announced a second suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting. another man -- jerrell dorsey -- is being held without bond, charged with first degree murder and aggravatted battery. another set-back for the weak economy. today's jobs report shows businesses only hired 80,000 people last month. that's 10,000 less than what some analysts expected. the unemployment rate remains at 8.2 percent. republican presidential nominee mitt romney called the latest report a "kick in the gut for middle-class families." president obama pointed out four-point-four million new jobs have been added over the past roughly two years... which he insists is a step in the right direction. crane's chicago business reports that nine companies will cut 1400 jobs in the next two months in chicago stockyards packaging will be closing

eliminating 95 jobs ... and in hanover park over 100 positions will be lost when a prominent food company there will be shutting down ... workers in oak park are set to go on strike this weekend. oak parks management and the workers union failed to reach a contract deal after talks ended yesterday. the two sides could not come to terms on changes in the rates for overtime pay and merit-based pay. the workers wanted an increase for both, but the village would not agree to the requests. 75 workers will be walking out on the job tomorrow and monday. they represent staff at the village hall parking enforcement officers public works and forestry empyees. some reaction today to congressman jesse jackson junior's vague but serious announcement about his health. a statement released from his office said jackson will need extended treatment at an in- patient facility, and continued medical care. the office also said jackson has grappled with physical and emotional ailments privately for a long period of time. jacksons office announced a week ago he was taking a leave of absence because of exhaustion.

casey anthony may be going back to court once again. anthony may take the stand in the civil trial against her. she's being sued for defamation by zenaida gonzalez. the woman claims anthony ruined her life when she told authorties a nanny by the same name took her daughter caylee. police determined that was not true. yesterday marked one year since anthony was acquitted of murdering her daughter. the civil trial starts in january. a man found guilty of killing his wife and their unborn son is appealing his death sentence. scott peterson was convicted of suffocating his wife, laci, and then dumping her body in the san francisco bay on christmas eve in 2002. but, he insists he had nothing to do with the murders. his attorney filed an appeal yesterday... arguing peterson didn't get a fair trial because of all the publicity in the case. mitt romney has set a new republican fund-raising record. brought in more than 100- million dollars last month. that includes donations to the campaign, the republican national committee and the romney victory fund. the obama campaign has not released their fundraising totals yet. but they have repeatedly said they expect to be outraised by romney. cnn says obama has a three percent lead in a nationwide poll. but romney is ahead by a 51-to- 43 margin in swing states. gop presidential candidate mitt

district on the south side -- watch out for an armed robber. police say one or two men in their 20's -- pulled a handgun on victims between 70th and 71st and state street. two incidents occurred a week and a half ago. one at 8:30 inthe morning, the other just after noon. the robbers took the victims purses. anyone with information should call chicago police. a shelter for women and children had to be evacuated after an outbreak of scabies. the scabies reportedly came from a child who was staying at the shelter. the skin disease is highly contagious. all 30 people inside the shelter were taken out. 13 adults and nine children had to go to the hospital because they were already showing symptoms. >>it began like a heat rash and then it got puffy like chicken pox and they keep scratching and scratching ... having the facility disinfected. scabies is a contagious skin disease that's caused by a

time for sports. matt garza was considered prime trade bait for the cubs... but now he's heading into the all-star break with a 4 and 7 record and an era over four. cubs going for the series win in atlanta...... garza threw 44 pitches in the first inning alone... he gives up the two-run homer to jason heyward here... his 14th. a few batters later... brian mccann does the same thing with his tenth homer and an early 4-0 deficit. garza only lasted four innings giving up five hits and three homers on 94 pitches. cubs lose 7-3, and split the series with the braves. the cubs visit the mets in new york tonight. it was a hot one for the series finale against the rangers. sox rookie jose quintana was lights out... he had eight strike outs and only allowed one run on two hits over eight innings. it's tied at one in the sixth when kevin youkilis does it again with a solo home run to right. that's his tenth rbi in ten games and his second straight game-winning hit. sox win 2-1. this is the first time texas has been swept all season.

the sox' "take jake" campaign fell just short. jake peavy was second to the rangers' yu darvish in voting for the final all-star spot. despite being runner- up peavy says it was one of the coolest experiences and he appreciates all the support. peavy makes his last start before the all-star break tonight against the blue jays. the bulls won't be getting brandon roy... he's verbally agreed to a two-year, 10 million dollar deal with the timberwolves. roy is a three-time all-star but did not play last season due to chronic knee problems. elsewhere, jason kidd is leaving the mavs for a three- year deal in new york, while jeremy lin signed a 4-year offer sheet with houston. the knicks can still match that deal after the 11th. that's a look at sports. your live illinois lottery drawing is next. good afternoon.
