near unthinkable tragedy in colorado, the largest mass shooting in american history, 12 dead, another 58 injured as the numbers keep changing. gunman opens fire inside of a packed movie theater. tonight a local family very worried their son may be among the dead. good evening. >> the colorado theater tragedy is the top story seen around on wgn america. what's happening inside the theater. >> the auditorium. at least one person has been shot but they say there's hundreds of people just running around. >> 911 calls give you a brief idea of the chaos inside theater 9 for the anticipated midnight premiere of "the dark knight rises." 30 minutes into that movie, 41-year-old james eaglen holmes used an exit door to come in. >> someone came in all black, armor, threw a gas can in the

audience it went off. then gunshots. >> in all, 58 people were injured and 12 died, among the wounded, a 4-month-old baby who's now been released from the hospital. her mother had gone to the movie with the baby and 4-year-old daughter. >> i'm not going to die in here. me and my kids we're not going to die in here. i need to get them out. i need to get out. all i could think is if i just stand up he's going to shoot. he was just shooting. and i was trying to think how i was going to get my kids out of there. >> and in this video you see panicked moviegoers rushing out. exactly how many rounds were fired police even at this point are not quite sure. they have learned more about the gunman, though. >> the suspect was dressed all in black. he was wearing a ballistics helmet. a tactical ballistic vest. ballistic leggings, a throat protector, a loin protect tofr and a gas mask.

>> he had four weapons a assault rifle, remington shotgun and two 40 caliber glocks. >> through the internet, he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition. >> not that much ammunition to cause more damage. police arrive 90 seconds after 911 calls started to flood dispatch. they arrested holmes in the theater's parking lot. that was last night. by today, police evacuated the apartment complex. holmes made explosives and bookie traps inside that building. >> it's a vexing problem how to enter it safely. a person has never seen anything like what the pictures show us in there. i see a lot of wires, trip wires jars full of ammunition jars full of liquid. something that looks like mortar rounds. a lot of challenges to get them there safely. >> that was wgn reporting. aurora police have stopped their

efforts to get inside the apartment complex tonight. they do plan to continue tomorrow. >> a crystal lake family on edge fearing what could be. the son is at the theater where the shooting happened and they were yet to hear from them. dan ponce joining us with details. dan? >> the family is certain that their son john was in the theater at the time of the shooting. so far they have not been able to confirm if he was among those who were killed. the name is john thomas larimer a 2003 graduate of crystal lake high school. you're looking at the graduation picture. it's 9 years old. he's stationed in the navy. he's in aurora, kro. all day long trying to find out where his son is. but so far again, the family is not able to get any information from the navy, the police, or any of the hospitals. earlier this afternoon, the department of defense released a

statement that two airmen and one sailor were injured in the shooting. and that another sailor is currently unaccounted for. and again family members identified the missing sailor as john larrimer from crystal lake. we're showing you the high school graduation picture from 2003 from crystal lake high school. the family hoping for the best tonight. maybe he's perhaps among the injured or missing for some other reason. but, again they tell reporters off camera they have not been able to get through and that so far they have been just desperately seeking answers from the military so far unsuccessfully. live in crystal lake. dan ponce wgn news. >> all right, dan. now for a closer look for the man behind the gas mask in the theater massacre. james holmes died his hair red to be the joker batman's enemy. police won't comment on anything. news crews swarmed around the home where he grew up in san diego. father seen escorted away by

police. families expressed sorrow over the tragedy. holmes graduated by the university of california riverside. he was studying neuroscience at the university of colorado medical school before dropping out. >> local theater chains taking precautions to protect against copy cats. james hall joins us from the sin mark at seven bridges in suburban wood bridge. see that part of our story now, gaynor? >> it's being called an isolated incident. but as a result of this colorado massacre, theaters across the chicago area are revising their security procedures. the mass shooting in aurora, colorado are on the minds of moviegoers who packed the theater in elmhurst to see the "dark knight rises," they were outraged but not scared away. >> that type of thing you want to bring a family to watch the show. it's a terrible situation but you take the risk just going

anywhere, right? >> classic cinemas have 13 locations in northern illinois. today theater personnel checked purses while they took tickets. patrons will no longer be able to bring backpacks. johnson says the theaters are working with local police departments. >> make sure we brush up on everything we're doing. make sure we're maintaining a safe and secure location. which i do believe we are. >> the sin mark is owned by the same company as the century 16 in aurora, colorado. patrons here say they saw a security presence but nothing out of the ordinary. >> it was the biggest change to what she felt in the movie's most violent scene. >> the seats came up. i found myself glancing at the emergency exit. so, i mean that's the only difference for me. i was kind of more aware of my

surroundings, a little paranoid, maybe. >> and seat theaters released the statement saying they stepped up the security too with no masks or fake weapons allowed for those who like to dress up in character. a lot of people are wondering if metal detectors or security pat downs could be coming soon. the co-owner of classic cinemas says he doesn't foresee that in his future. and they're suspending the midnight premieres for the time being. >> a mass shooting like this hits close to home. northern illinois university suffered its own tragedy. students who survived that attack say the colorado victims have a long road to recovery. >> took me about eight nine months for me to see the first movie in the movie theater. it's hard for me to watch. looking at the doors and

what a beautiful day today, coolest temperature in three weeks. coolest humidity in two weeks around the area. doesn't get much nicer than this. tomorrow we heat it up again. the humidity comes back in earnest on sunday. we have heat next week. we have an active thunderstorm producing pattern. we'll talk more ant that in a moment. the high temperature today, 81 degrees in chicago. dew point, 54 this afternoon. it's been 70 in recent days. it's going back to that territory over the weekend before it's over. and tonight, the big blast furnace dome of hot air is producing as it will next week the clusters of thunderstorms that will eventually win their way in our direction. we'll get them from time to time interspersed with the blast furnace-type of heat. but a couple of days next week the winds are off of the lake. that will moderate some of the heat some. the heat advisories out to the west. because this is where the hot air is. here you can see it. it's going to expand in our direction. there's the 81.

there's omaha's 96. 103 today in rapid city. as warm as we were in chicago up in the tundra of canada. at this hour at 72. very warm out to the west. and the core of that heat coming in our direction. enjoying the temperatures east winds at six. water temperature, 81. what a weekend for a swim. four degrees warmern from the chicago shoreline. mold count moderate. pollen was low. northwest flow or the fire pattern. the combination of the two that sets up next week. the high pressure dome the core of the hot air moves eastward. the storm clusters will form and follow this jet. these are the kinds that rake all the way to the east coast in this kind of pattern. we ought to have -- we have good rain numbers coming out of the

models. but we're going to have them come in clusters. they could be fast-moving with upper winds that go off above them. beginning at 181 off of the models, that's twice normal. and the range from the various forecast is .83 to 3.55. that's kind of interesting. we have the heat coming in. clouding over as thunderstorm blowoff comes in here later in the day. there's where the heat indices hit 90 tomorrow. watch how this expands on sunday. these are 100 plus heat indices. the setup on monday able to show you that. here's how the whole thing proceeds. the hot air dome. this thing covers almost coast-to-coast. it's extraordinary. their scope of this thing and the way this jet runs over it. head to wednesday next week. still blast furnace-type hot. and look at this. this is interesting. people ask how to compare to 88 benchmark year here.
