bomb teams set off a detonator connected to 38 improvised explosives. we have the latest on an emotional day for those injured or killed in the shooting. among them a victim a man from the chicago suburbs. >> top story president obama will travel to colorado tomorrow to meet with the victims -- the families of the victims. investigators are also there to continue and they learn more about the shooter. reported sandra has the latest on today's developments in colorado. >> the technicians did just a marvelous job. they went to the next ied or iid with an unknown substance and they had to attack a triggering mechanism and they did that very, very skillfully. >> authorities called in about 100 law enforcement officials for the investigation. they gathered outside of james

homes apartments saturday. >> this department was designed, i say, based on everything i see to kill whoever entered it. and who was most likely to enter that location after he planned and excuted this horrific crime was going to be a police officer. >> the community is in shock after the suspected gunman opened fire during a movie screening of the dark night rises. 12 people died and nearly 60 hurt. three service members were among the victims including john lair mer who died in the rampage. he joined the navy last year. some of the shooting victims look back on the horror from their hospital beds. >> the wound was somewhere around here. and just a few mill meters there and centimeters in and i don't think i would have left the theater. >> and i just had my face down on the ground and i just stayed

as still as i possibly could and i prayed and i prayed and he fired off a couple more rounds. and then he left. >> police arrested holmes at the scene. he is scheduled to appear in court monday. a steady stream of people continue to come here in front of the movie theater to pay their respects at a make shift memorial. the city is creating an official vigil tomorrow evening. >> sandra mentioned some of the vict. . we now know all of the names. eight men, three women and one child killed. the youngest. six years old. alex sullivan, not related, was celebrating his 27th birthday and his first anvers we with his wife. 24-year-old jessica was a aspiring reporter.

the oldest victim is 51-year-old gordon couden and another victim, 27-year-old john marmer who joined the navy last year grew up in crystal lake. >> and dan spent the day talking with his friends and neighbors. and we have more now on the man everyone described as an awesome guy. >> good evening. friends and neighbors have been stopping by the home throughout the day to bring them food and offer condolences. john is being remembered as an ah-around outstanding person who will be greatly missed. >> 27-year-old john larimer is described by friends as bright as articulate. he is one of 12 people shot to death inside a movie theater in colorado just after midnight friday. he graduated from crystal lake south high school in 2003. brian is a math teacher who taught john and his four

siblings. he spoke with maggie earlier today. >> it didn't make any difference if it was a teacher or student. it didn't matter. he brought light to people's world and that was just who john was every day. >> larimer joined the navy in june of last year. he was a petty officer third class assigned to buckley air force base in aurora colorado. all day the family waited in agony for word of his condition. the worst fears were the john had been killed by the gunman. his aunt karen spoke to reporters briefly outside the home. >> he was a wonderful young man. we will have a statement explaining who he was and what a terrible terrible loss this is for everyone who knew him. >> the family released a statement today which reads in part, we send our thoughts and prayers out to the families of the other victims and those still recovering in the hospital. we love you john, and we will

miss you always. >> i just kind of thought, what would he want us to do? and i think that he would want us to celebrate his life. to not be really, really sad because that's not the kind of perp john was. john was a happy person. and so i'm going to be personally celebrating his life and everything that he did both for other people, for the south community he's just a very special young man. >> funeral arrangements are pending. according to the family statement his brother is currently in denver working with the navy to bring his remains back home to illinois. >> and the man who experienced first-hand the horrific theater shooting in colorado was steve that you're seeing. who was watching the movie when smoke and gunfire filled the theater. a 27-year-old special ed teacher was shaproning a group of 11

youngsters in town for conference. they were next door to theater nine where the gunman opened fire. one of the teen aged boys with him was also injured and he took him to safety. we spoke to him and here's what he had to say. >> you can't let something like this scare you. you can't let a person that angry for reasons we don't know when, we need to continue to stay strong. you can be concerned about it but you have to continue liing life tot fullest because you don't know what tomorrow can bring. >> many are saying the list could have been higher had it not been for the quick response by police. a make shift memorial outside the theater continues to grow tonight and an official individual yill will be held tomorrow night. the city's mayor and governor of colorado will be there as they remember those killed early yesterday. >> in his weekly address president obama called the shootings in colorado evil.

he said the lives of people were taken away who had hopes for the future and dreams yet fulfilled. >> what matters are not the small and trivial things which so often consume our lives. it's how we choose to treat one another and love one another. it is what we do on a daily basis to give our lives meaning and to give our lives purpose. that's what matters. >> the president asked all americans to take time for prayer and reflection this weekend for the victims of the shootings and for the people who knew and loved them. and house speaker john boehner spoke for the republican weekly address today. he said that words cannot capture the horror or make sense of the shootings. boehner did ask that americans try to pull together and embrace the national family more tightly. >> we join president obama in sending condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded. and we also thank god for the

police, the first responders, the doctors, the nurses who in a heroic effort saved lives. >> and the flag has been lowered to half staff in honor of the shooting victims. president obama has ordered that flags at all government buildings and military post bs lowered until sunset wednesday as a tribute to those wounded and killed. >> the star of the dark night rises movie released a statement today. he is in europe where the premier was canceled. bail who plays batman writes, words cannot express the horror that i feel. i cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones but my heart goes out to them. >> still to come the suspect charged in a hit and run accident that killed a cook county jail officer appears in court for the first time. >> a shooting outside a restaurant turns deadly

>> a chicago man charged in a hit and run accident that claimed the life of a cook county correctional officer appeared in court today. charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene after he struck and killed 38-year-old nicki jones wednesday night. his bail was set at $3 million. he is scheduled to be back in court on monday. her sister was in court this morning but did not talk to anyone. she was on her way to work at cook county's maximum security division when she was hit right in front of the jail. >> a domestic dispute in the austin neighborhood led to the shooting that left one man dead

and two others injured. it happened near austin boulevard and lake street early saturday morning. one of the three victims intervened in a domestic dispute involving the shooter who had left and then returned with a gun. >> the long wait is almost over. cubs great ron santo will finally become a hall of famer tomorrow. >> and wgn's dan is in cooperstown and he talks with the santo family on the eve of the induction ceremony. >> make no his take, this weekend is in every way a celebration. but for ron santo's family it's more complicated. they're rejoicing in his hall of fame induction and grieving that he can't be here to soak it all in. >> the times that he didn't get in we would talk, if he gets in and he's not here we're not going. there's some of that talk going around. and it's just the way it is. because filled with emotions you're angry. but when it happened you know, you just have to.

sexual assault has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. >> found guilty of 28 charges including rape and sexual assault. he was implicated in san antonio texas. they testified against him in court during a five-day court-martial. he is among 12 instructors investigated for sexual misconduct. another six face charges in that scandal. a former lab technician is now facing charges in connection with an outbreak of hepatitis c that reportedly infected dozens of patients at a new hampshire hospital. 32-year-old david clatouseski is accused of stealing controlled substances and then switching the needles with patients. officials say that he knew that he had hepatitis c and continued to permit tainted syringings to be used on patients under his care. at least 30 people have been infected. >> don't go away

>> beautiful day. a little on the cloudy side but still. >> a little humid out there as well. temperatures were 3 degrees above normal. we made it up to 87 today. this will be the coolest day of the next several because tomorrow we're looking at temperatures again cracking 90 and by monday we should make it back to 100. time lapsed cameras. we had clouds out there, cloud fragments or debris clouds that came off of thunderstorms. those storms fell apart not

affecting chicago area. look at the high temperature today and take a look at what's waiting down in the southwest. dodge city, oklahoma city, and 107 in dallas, three digit numbers in all three spots and that air mass is going to be drifting and it looks like it probably should arrive here by monday. we're looking again at least 100 degrees. however, there is a chance of some thunderstorms. we'll talk about that in a second. down to 8 degrees at o'hare. you begin to feel the humidity a little more winds not really much of a factor. wind speeds less than 10 miles an hour. look at this. excessive heat warnings in effect here. heat advisories for this area chicago not included. farther to the north is the severe thunderstorm watch for parts of the dakotas. in fact, we're thinking that we'll probably escape severe storms but should be peprd from time to time with big

thunderstorms over the next five or six days. here's the core of the hot air. watch what happens with time beginning to drift a little tot east and again that's monday temperature will be followed by another day or two around 90 and then temperatures fall by the time we get into next saturday. as for the humidity dew points are in the mid 60s in most locations. we are close to that magic 70 degree tropical air feel mark. not quite there but it is muggy at the moment. we talked about some storms that provided some clouds for us earlier. you can see the storms decaying and the clouds beginning to slowly drift tot south. it is likely we'll see the clouds dissipate by this eevepping and there will be some stars up there after midnight. coastal north carolina parts of texas and louisiana getting his with big thunderstorms at the moment. the storm prediction center

outlooks minnesota for a slight risk of severe storms. but the yellow areas indicate a general risk of thunderstorms and we're confident that first tomorrow we may get showers and storms in here. then on monday we may see after that 100 degree highs so for to develop. in fact day to day a chance of showers and thunderstorms exist right up and until next weekend. now, the wind forecast you can see not much to report there. a little breezy tomorrow afternoon but other wise generally in about a 10 to 18 mile per hour range. forecast for tonight, early clouds and then clearing. sunday some early sunshine then the clouds will pick up and we could see a storm late. high temperatures around 90. then on sunday evening, 70

degrees. monday high heat indices with a chance of evening storms. the high near 100. look at the temperatures. it will be fairly warm with some fairly humid conditions as well. next saturday probably the best day of the week with the high expected in the mid 0's. but notice those chances of thunderstorms something just about every day of the week. we need the rain still eevep though we've had a good dretching rain here, it's very, very dry and we still need some more rain. so it will be well received. >> that's one of the things we keep learg about is that farmers are really keeping their fingers crossed for rain. >> the ground could probably take ten inches with no trouble right now to bring it back closeser to normal. >> thank you. well, the oldest fresh water distance race in the world is under way on the waters of lake michigan. the 104 race began today with

more than 350 yachts competing. crew members are sailing through the night as they make their journey north on the 33 mile course. >> and literally a high honor for the men and women who serve our country. 30-year-old marine corporal was wounded in iraq among many disabled veterans who received a free sky dive in wisconsin. for the past five years sky dive midwest has hosted what's called tandems for troops. not only giving free rides to disabled veterans but discounted sky dives to any vets and their relatives. any money will benefit the wounded warrior project and it continues tomorrow. >> there it goes. >> well, a night to forget for the cubs in st. louis but plenty of memories made for cubs fans in cooperstown.

their second. the white sox are first. and there's news about a trade. the white sox have acquired veteran pitcher from the bull pin acquiring meyers from the astros. white sox now in second place. chris did not stop the bleeding in detroit. he got mixed up in the pitching hand tries to go for the bare hand. he stayed in the game didn't have it in this one. took a 1-0 lead though. this will be the high point for the white sox. he got tagged big time in the sixth. brennan's bosh unloads the three run shot. they're fourth in a row. the final seven to run in the american league. horrible comment for the cubs in st. louis tonight.
