some of the victims wounded in the colorado movie theater shootings are in court today as the accused gunman is formally charged. good afternoon. i am steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. wgn's robert jordan is in the newsroom with our top story. the state has gathered enough information to file 142 criminal counts against james homes... in connectiong with the movie theater shootings... and his booby trapped apartment. in court this morning.. while we is allegded to have killed 12 people he was charged with 24

counts of first degree murder. -- the double count likely comes from a charge called depraived and intentional murder. he was also charged with 16-counts of attempted first degree murder. he also is charged with 1 count of possessing explosives found in his apartment. the last time james holmes was in court we had the first opportunity to see the man accused of killing 12 people and wounding dozens more for today's appearance no cameras were alone in the court room he heard prosecutors read in long list of chargers from the our aurora colorado studer rampage 10 days after he shot up a crowded midnight showing of the new batman movie ... the former neuroscience student allegedly sent a package to his psychiatrist at the university

trial by want to see justice done with my own eyes ... >>first-degree murder carries the possibility of the death penalty ... 10 victims remained hospitalized for remain in critical condition the death of a toddler on chicago's south side has been ruled a homicide. one year-old iyonna davis of roseland died saturday night. the girl's stepmother called 9- 1-1 after she found davis not breathing. her stepmother says she left davis playing on the floor while she washed dishes. an autopsy determined davis died from a head injury suffered from child abuse. detectives are investigating. so far, no charges have been filed. today for a young man accused of killing a chicago teenager during a fight on a beach in northwest indiana. james malecek is charged in laporte county, indiana with battery, aggravated battery and involuntary manslaughter in the death of 17-year-old kevin kennelly junior. he's accused of punching

kennelly.. who died two days later of blunt force trauma to the head. it happened in long beach indiana on the fourth of july last year. malecek is also facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by kennelly's parents. police believe the same man is responsible for two attempted sexual assaults in the logan square neighborhood. this is a sketch of the suspect. police say he's 23 to 28 years old.. about 6'1 to 6'3 inches tall.. he weighs about 175 pounds.. and he has dreadlocks, and a tattoo of a teardrop below his right eye. the knife-wielding suspect confronted women in the 17 and the 19 hundred block of north drake, on july 11th. he tried to assault both women but ran away when they began screaming. if you have any information you're asked to call chicago police: police:-(312) 744-8261

a man on the northwest side is charged with drunk driving after a passenger in his car died in a crash on the kennedy. pavlo lulac is due in court today for aggravated d-u-i. police say his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit, when he lost control and hit two other cars on the kennedy, near armitage over the weekend. of seven passengers riding in lulac's car, was killed. she was not wearing a seat belt. none of the other injuries are life threatening. county that killed a young boy. ten year old tony borcia died after an accident near north suburban lake villa saturday. borcia fell off an inner tube that was being pulled by a boat on petite lake . he was then hit by another boat. two other people suffered minor injuries. the body of a missing teenager was found in the kankakee river. authorities recovered 16 year- old shaun lynch in bourbannais township yesterday afternoon.

lynch was from bonfield which is in kankakee county. authorities say lynch was pulled under water by a current while swimming in the river. lynch was reportedly swimming across the river back to his family. there have been several drownings in the chicago area this summer... and the subject of water safety has never been more important. wgn's randi belisomo is live in evanston with some imporatant advice.. every family should know before heading to the beach. randi? instructors one people to know that struggling forces a drowning ... a young girl when swimming with family members over the weekend she was a seventh grader ... she was separated from the person she was holding hands with and went under she was submerged for 30 minutes and remains in the hospital where she has not regained consciousness ... there happen 58 drownings in the great lakes this year half of those have happened in lake michigan half of those were in the

chicagoland area ... there's a 50% increase in drownings this year over last if you are submerged for only a few minutes you have a 90 percent chance of survival if you're under for 10 your chances dropped 14% swimming and instructions tell us to go horizontal go with the tide not against it and you can survive ... >>you have to try to relax as much as possible and it's hard ... you need to keep your anxiety level down keep breathing floating on your back is the best way to survive getting caught in a rip current ... >>kids think they can handle this and adults can sometimes handle it and so as a parent i am always watching them ...

remember this: as long as you are floating your surviving if you are struggling you are drowning ... for the first time in seven weeks, we know the whereabouts of congressman jesse jackson jr. his family confirms, jackson has checked into the mayo clinic, for treatment of depression and gastro-intestinal problems. the clinic has a strong reputation for treating psychiatric problems that manifest themselves in physical illnesses. the clinic says jackson will receive "extensive inpatient evaluation" -- a sign that his stay there may be lengthy. a chicago alderman is in the hospital this morning, after she collapsed in englewood.

syrian rebels claim they've captured a government military largest city. the rebels say they captured the aleppo after a nine-hour battle overnight. at least 17 people were reported including eight in aleppo, syria's commercial and cultural hub. a united nations official says about 200 thousand people in and around aleppo have fled shelling and heavy weapons fire in the past two days. mitt romney is spending part of the day in poland. it's the final stop on his trip to europe and the middle east. romney landed in poland earlier this morning. this follows his weekend trip to jersualem. during his visit, romney met with the country's president and prime minister. he also met with the *palestinian* prime minister. during an outdoor speech romney said *iran* must be prevented from developing a nuclear

weapon. romney and his wife ann also visited jerusalem's most revered site, the western wall. it's less than 100 days until the presidential election. and vice president, joe biden is in town today- for a campaign fundraiser. vice president biden will hold a luncheon at a downtown hotel. ticket prices start at 500 dollars. proceeds will be split between the president's campaign committee, obama for america and the democratic party. last fall, biden's chicago fundraisers earned more than 500 hyundai is recalling 222- thousand vehicles after complaints that airbags did not deploy during an accident. the recall involves about 200,000 santa fe vehicles from also being recalled... 2012 and 2013 sonatas... because side curtain airbags may not inflate during a crash. the move comes after hyundai received complaints from some adults under 130-pounds... whose air bags didn't deploy. dealers will re-program air bag sensors to accurately detect smaller adults.

next eight years ... stocks are trading lower at this hour ... if you are looking for work in chicago -- the cta is hiring. the cta is looking for hundreds of new bus drivers. wgn's frank holland is at the job fair with more on the jobs and the job seekers: its a sign of the times. hundreds of people lined up at chicago state university, looking for a job with the cta. johnathon puckett the first person in line got here at midnight. most people arrived around 5:00 this morning.the doors didnt even open up until 9:00. and this is only an informational event. 400 people will be hired for part time bus operator positions in september. they will drive shuttle buses while the red line is shut down on the southside from may until the end of the next year. donna carasquillo moorehead says this long wait is worth it because all the part time drivers will be offered

permanent positions, some even full time. most of the qualifications needed are posted on signs like these. you have to be 21 or older, have a commercial drivers license and other technical knowledge. but cta officials say there is one quality youll have to show them if you want to get hired. in addition to meeting applicants the cta is also proving information and direction to people who dont meet all the qualifications now but are willing to take the necessary steps. anyone from any neighborhood can apply. but the cta is especiallylooking for people who live in the southside neighborhoods impacted by the redline closures. thats why the event was brought to chicago state, the universitys president says its part of csus mission to serve the community.

whether in medical watch.. the nation's blood supply is at its lowest level in 15 years. summer is typically a time when blood donations are slow because many people are on vacation, and schools that host blood drives are closed. but the american red cross says this summer is worse than normal. extreme heat has kept many potential donors indoors and at home.. and severe storms earlier this month forced the cancellation of dozens of blood drives. the red cross says doctors may have to cancel elective surgeries if blood products are not readily available.

pregnant women who work up to their due date are likely to have babies with a lower birth weight. a new study finds expectant moms who worked through eight months of pregnancy had babies around half a pound lighter on average than those who stopped work between six and eight months. the researchers report, the effect of continuing to work during the late stages of pregnancy was equal to that of smoking while pregnant. past research has shown babies with low birth weights are at higher risk of poor health and slow development. lunchbreak is next. the folks from seasons 52 are here... we're making cedar plank roasted salmon and a tomato and avocado salad!
